Hello hi I just found out you're the artist of my favorite pic of Jamil from all time 🥹 I absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVEEEEEEEEEEEEE SO MUUUUCH his bday art from 2020!! It's my favorite one from every art and he looks so pretty and hot and cool and like he's in a music clip and about to drop a fire verse!! I LOVE your painting style so much, as a baby artist, would you one day show us how you color? I'm sure you put so much blood, sweat and tears into your hard work and it would great to get a little bit of that wisdom. Please keep drawing, keep doing what you love because it makes the world a better place to live!

Sketched my sleepy and tired oc to do a very quick demonstration but it covers how I color when i render things:

Start with rough greyscale first, it's a good start to roughly decide light direction and value of your overall work. Especially if you have no idea on your shading.

Next, apply base color to greyscale. I'll use gradient map if I want to keep the details of my greyscale. But if not, I'll just start with a flat base color, and try whatever I can to apply color.

Rendering phase. Add layers and just paint on top to refine it. Merge all layers if it's too messy. Then add layers again. My rendering really depends on how much time taken because it's just a loop of paint over and refining. Thats why i do more simple fanart cuz I sometimes get bored of rendering Also at this stage when doing lineless style, I merge lineart with layers and cover up the lines.

Final touch. Merge all layers and use [filter gallery > paint daubs (brush size 1, sharpness 2)]. It will sharpen your work and look detailed. Or add some very fine noise texture, it will look detailed too.

Another very rough demonstration on how i apply color mood. This will be after step 2. And same will be more refining and even paint over to ensure the colors look ok.

Other tips:

Add warm and cool colors especially on skin.

Use pinterest. Always find more than one reference for a subject if you want to draw better than yesterday. Pure ref is a nice tool to gather reference on your pc. When i draw a single hand I had a lot of ref. (pose, color temperature, lighting, photos, artwork, all diff ref)

Color theory is so important I still struggle a lot. I highly recommend beginners start from practicing Marco Bucci's ball practice. After that slowly change to adding character into movie scene and photographs, the purpose is to adapt different color moods and learn the lighting from the image. Learn more from famous movie and cinematic. They did their best to nail the colors.

Anyway,

this is a long answer about how I color. My previous job influenced me so much on coloring so there's a lot of thinking and struggle on my colors.

So, I suggest you be more experimental and try new ways, at the end what remains is what fits you.

Hi Rin! Thank you for this ask?!! I feel a 10k word essay spilling out of my veins rn.. JKJK I’ll try keep it concise (but it is 6am so pls forgive).

So pretty much most of my pieces (that are not studies) start with some kind of story/scene behind them (like rather than a visual idea). Then I think about how I would make it come to life in a movie. But because I can't be drawing a million frames daily trying to animate, I think about how I can capture this story (plot/emotion/vibes(?)) in a single frame. I would say a typical process would be something like: story idea -> look up references -> draw. I do rely quite heavily on references though so it can be a bit hard to capture exactly what I want, so that mostly comes from tweaking facial expressions/hand positions/minor changes in posture (these things do convey A LOT of emotion though). but tbh I don't always do this, sometimes I settle for just good enough lol.. Sometimes references just don't do it and that's when I do stuff from scratch, good example for this is when I drew Yuuta Maki and Megumi from your dance AU. In this case I basically move the characters around until my brain says, yes this is correct and also using my irl experience to help guide me. It takes a long time to figure out though so I don't do it often, it's something I really need to work on.

Sometimes I also just have no ideas at all, in which case its more look up references -> get an idea/draw random refs until an idea sticks in my head. Like the new itafushi sketches I did has a theme to it but it initially started off with me just trying to draw different things bc I had no idea at all. Then I drew something which sparked a thought in my head then it was back to looking for references based on this story I was trying to tell. BUT also sometimes I just really like how a reference looks and I want to put that down on paper. Like example of this is the itafushi one shot I want to write, it was inspired entirely by a single shot composition I really liked in a show and I just need to draw it. Story comes later whatever lmao

TBH previously (like before I quit and picked up drawing again months back) I never used to do this at all. I would just draw people looking pretty and that's it (which there is nothing wrong with that either btw! I still do it sometimes, especially in my sketchbook). But I have found a lot of inspiration in Gege Akutami and Tatsuki Fujimoto's works. I fell in love with how they were telling their stories and I know they're both movie buffs and incorporate a lot of cinematic elements in their work. (and like going off on a tangent, the csm anime adaption is so top tier because they literally made it look like a live action movie which like how. And I mean jjk s2 as well has some very cool cinematic scenes and I'm just like ughhhhhh, btw Shota Goshozono is so goated) I think I can go on for miles about this. Anyway that's what made me kinda move more towards telling stories > drawing pretty pictures.

In terms of references I definitely do the good ol Pinterest. Sometimes google, but sometimes also movies and tv shows. I try to combine multiple references when I'm drawing (if I'm not being lazy), I think it goes a long way in making your work look more interesting. Also no one talks about how it takes SKILL to find references honestly. And sometimes it's so awkward, like I'd rather die than have someone look at my search history when looking for references. So if you feel like you're looking up something weird, no you aren't.

Hi! Thank you for the concern! They didn't ehe the pose i used to make that drawing was referenced from a picture i found on pinterest, so there might be more drawings with that pose out there! ( i did post the ref pic on my twitter under the drawing too ) Just coming here to say that tracing is a very complicated term for art out there. Its best to call out someone tracing something IF the drawing looks EXACTLY the same to the original, if the original can be found ofc. There's people out there that grab drawings of artists that they like and trace the drawing to put their favorite character in that pose for example, and if you put the two drawings together with low opacity and the lines are exactly in the same place then yes that was 100% traced! Complicated everyone has different feelings over tracing!

oh hey rosie!!! im glad u found it helpful :-) it’s the first time i’ve ever asked for a taper actually, i usually just ask for a grade 2 fade on my back & sides and a generic Trim but i think going for the taper means a less harsh/intense fade & more longer hair left everywhere else too, which i prefer!! hopefully they understand the vision 🙏 otherwise i can post some ref pics of my hair if u want although it is quite grown out now from my last haircut :/ i can probably also find the pinterest pics i used as my own inspiration too lol . thank u so much u are awesome too 🤝

sweet LORD, that dress you designed for Allura!!!! OMG, I get strong Egyptian vibes looking at it and they are SO GOOD. all the details, the gilding, the color palette, it's all excellent

Apologies in advance but I'm gonna springboard off this ask to gush about the inspo for this design because I loooove doing that haha.

This will be long, so I'll add a read more:

OKAY! So, honestly, I didn't really look at any Egyptian style of clothing while designing, but that's a very interesting observation! I've always liked the style, so it may have bled into it subconsciously lol.

Now, the main inspo for the dress is a combination of designs by Lonary, whom I found one of their pieces credited on pinterest! (Seriously, take a look at their designs, I ADORE them!!) This is my favorite but it was not the main inspo for the design.

As for the colors, nearly all are from colorpicking from her official ref pic!

And the jewelry/emblem/symbol is based on some symbols my friends and I have noticed on altean banners and King Alfor's badge! (I had also used it here and here)

Finally, the iridescent colors is just that. I want all the sparkly colorful goodness for Allura, so I studied how holographic material looks. She represents light to me, reflecting all the colors (like she's connected to the lions). I kind of have a similar theme with Shiro, absorbing all light/colors as black. (Gotta love the yin yang aaaah)

I just........had a lot of fun lol. I always try to sprinkle in these elements in my art and I'm very grateful and glad that my efforts are being received well 💜

Keepers of the Chaos (Chapter 4)

Summary: Tam, Linh, Keefe, Biana, and Fitz are part of the tiny fandom for Keeper of the Chaos, and Tam and Linh's podcast convinces some of their other friends to watch it as well. The group finds themselves strangely invested in this show, where students at Tumblr High School who work together to write about an elf named Sophia, cause incomprehensible chaos, and fight their rival Pinterest High School.

Fitz Vacker used to like the color teal. Thon wasn't entirely sure why; well, it was just a nice color, what other reasoning did thon need? Regardless, no matter how much thon liked teal, thon was in no way prepared for... that.

Against thons better judgement, thon had listened when thons sistaer Biana insisted they watch this new show, Keepers of the Chaos, with aer, Della, and Della's then-fiancee-now-spouce Livvy. Thon enjoyed the show, sure, but the chaos... the chaos in that show. It had been expected, of course, but not that much. Considering that, Lynn was the character that resonated most with thon, because her attempts to get the keepers under control felt a lot like when Fitz had to deal with Biana, Keefe, and Sophie... and the headache those three gave thon. Especially when Dex came into the mix as well.

Yeah, Lynn resonated with Fitz a lot, and thon sometimes wondered how she dealt with such chaotic spice. Being aroace, that was one problem thon wouldn't have to deal with. But unfortunately, thon still had chaotic friends, and turned to analyses of Lynn's motivations to cope, writing elaborate dumbles essays about the way she tried her best to record the events of the keepers and round them up. Thons other favorites, like Jan and Appie, were also fun to write analyses about, but with considerably less projection.

(There were a few characters thon didn't even have to project Judaism onto, like Sam and Ref, which was a welcome change from usual process.)

But no matter how much chaos Fitz had to deal with on Biana, Sophie, and Keefe's part, at least they hadn't started the Finnapocolypse.

...yet.

Oh, season one, episode nine. The season finale. Fitz had really expected some sort of battle with Pinterest High School, made a compilation of all the foreshadowing, and thon would have much preferred that.

The intro, as always, had been great. Things went downhill quickly. Unaware of the consequences, someone joked that Finn, the elf who found Sophie, was like Dobby saying "You're an elf, Sophia." Then, some horrible monster suggested that they photoshop Finn's trademark teal eyes onto Dobby's face.

It was like an explosion had taken place among the Keepers. Around half the fandom went mad and jumped on the chaos train, editing Finn's teal eyes onto any image they could get their hands on; John Cena, Shannon Messenger, the Mona Lisa, a cracker, and so much more. Many of them even wore sleep masks with teal eyes over their faces, temporarily blinding them, but they considered it worth it. The other half simply watched, with opinions varying from amusement to absolute horror.

Biana found it hilarious. Fitz... slightly less so. It was a love hate relationship with that episode, and really with that whole show.

As though he'd summoned aer, Biana's voice called "Oh Fitzy!" Ae appeared in thons doorway soon after.

"Yeah?" thon said.

"Guess what today is!"

Fitz racked thons brain. "Shit, is it your birthday?"

"No."

"Mom's birthday?"

"Still no."

"Uh... Livvy's birthday?"

"No, though cer birthday is coming up next month, so do keep that in mind."

"It can't be their anniversary, they got married last June and it's January, so..."

"It's January eighteenth!"

"What does that signify?"

"THE FINNAPOCALYPSE!!!" Biana yelled. "It happened January eighteenth in the show, remember?"

"You're a dedicated fan."

"So are you, you just don't like the Finnapocalypse."

"Fair. But you are making a pretty big deal out of this."

"Well..." Fitz sighed as ae continued. "Keefe and I had this idea."

"No."

"You didn't even let me finish!"

"Hell no."

"Check dumbles! And you need to change your profile pic!"

A gnawing feeling of dread grew in thons gut, but thon wanted confirmation, so thon sighed and picked up thons phone, logging onto thons dumbles, @lordofthesnuggles, and went do the dashboard. Everyone's profile picture had Finn's teal eyes edited on. Fitz sighed and logged off.

"Oh, you can't escape just by escaping dumbles! Come downstairs!"

"Why would I do that?"

"Mom made ripplefluffs to lure you out."

"Dammit!" said Fitz. It... it worked. As thon walked into the kitchen, thon questioned thons choices; were ripplefluffs worth this? Livvy had a teal eye sleeping mask on cer face, and handed Biana one. Ae put it over aer eyes. With a sigh, Della handed Fitz a ripplefluff. Thon took a bite and buried thons head in thons hands. "Why are y'all like this," thon groaned.

Biana ignored thon, singing out "We're gonna have teal eyes in the end!"
