In a home full of family, all of whom were undocumented immigrants, there was an expectation as a first generation American to be successful. Beatriz's parents wanted their daughter to be the American Dream personified. The only issue was that it was painfully obvious that she wasn't made for school. As an English-Language Learner, she was placed in special classes to help her learn at a slower pace. It was often disregarded that she could understand the English and Spanish spoken to her but that she couldn't read or write in either language. With these barriers, she quickly disengaged with public school and only managed to scrape through her classes.

In high school, after her father was in a construction accident that left him unable to work, Triz took a job as a hostess at a local restaurant to help the family. This was the first time she'd found a place where people treated her like she was capable and 'normal'. This was the place she discovered platonic love, familial love, and even found herself a little dizzy over a coworker. Without the grades or a single clue as to what she "wanted to be" when she "grew up" Triz kept working at the restaurant, shifting to a waitress at eighteen. With her found family and a love of food, Beatriz found her passion in the kitchen, deciding she wanted to be a chef.

With disappointed parents that thought she was throwing her life away to mediocrity, the backlash was immense. Her parents never saw how she watched them make traditional plates with no recipe, never tried her food when she perfectly replicated it on her own. Everything was critiqued- and not just the food but her appearance and personality, too. Her mother frequently told her she dressed like a child, too many patterns, too colorful. Then her father told her she was immature and idiotic for being always looking for a silver lining. Unfortunately, the verbal abuse came with physical abuse, too.

After graduation and their insistence that she leave the restaurant for a 'real' job or community college, Triz spent the money she'd been saving for a car on a small apartment within walking distance to the restaurant. With some pleading about her change in circumstances, they gave her a position in the kitchen and, with hard work and dedication, Beatriz has proven herself up to the task. Years later, she'd worked up to the position of Chef de Partie and dreams of possibly starting up a food truck or bakery some day. The relationship with her family is strained but mending all through her own hard work, and she'd happy spending her time on the beach or pier, singing karaoke, and doing little things to make everyone around her smile.
