More Regency!lark
“The Flickerman’s are hosting a ball on the ninth.”
His brother looks up from his desk. “The ninth? I have a prior engagement that evening. You will not mind missing it, will you?”
Katniss hums her response, but frowns down at the invitation and Peeta smiles into his glass, “you assume incorrectly, brother.”
Katniss wasn’t particularly social, but with her cousin-in-law in confinement and Lady Abernathy sequestered away with her, she had little opportunity for society this season. Although if Peeta had to guess, he’d say she was mourning the lavish dishes, rather than the company or dancing.
His brother turns to face them, brow furrowed, “I did not think you would wish to attend.” Graham could be so obtuse. “My business is unmovable, but perhaps Peeta could accompany you?”
Katniss peers up at him through her lashes, quite oblivious to the effect she has. He tilts his glass in her direction, “as you wish.”
She smiles, the first real smile all evening and he feels a twinge of guilt accepting her thanks. It’s not as if it’s a sacrifice. He secretly revels in being appointed her companion and protector if only for an evening.
Soon after, she walks him to the door.
“I could speak to him,” Peeta says when they’re out of earshot, “Offer to handle some of the business so he might have more time for you. It must be lonely without your friends.”
She waves him off. “His work is important and gives him purpose. I’ll survive. Besides, it’s not so bad. Yes, I miss Madge and Hazelle’s company at the balls and assemblies, but I have you,” she grabs his hand and squeezes.
It’s an innocent gesture between two friends, family really, but he still must force the smile to remain in place as he bids her goodnight, opting to walk all the way back to his apartment instead of accepting the carriage.
He’d never coveted anything of his brother’s: Not the title, not the land, nor purpose. Even as a child when his brother was doted over, while he was ignored, he’d always understood it for the heavy burden that it was. He’d never cared for any of it, until he’d met his brother’s fiancé.
In the two years they’d been married, Peeta had been a constant companion. At first he’d visit in hopes of squashing his silly obsession with his sister-in-law. He’d made it his mission to find her flaws, no matter how petty they be, but discovering Katniss’s scowl and preference for sweets had only reinforced his feelings. Furthermore, somewhere along the way, he’d become friends, and quite good ones at that. There was nothing more satisfying than being sought out by Katniss in a room full of others, or of making her laugh. Now, years after that failed experiment, he couldn’t bear to stay away.
But bear it he must, Peeta decides later that evening. He and his brother have always been close, brought closer by the death of their parents and brother. He cannot afford to let jealousy poison the relationship.
He’s mulling over his next course of action when his housekeeper rushes in with an urgent summons to the Mellark house.
He can’t remember a moment of the dash to his brother’s home, nor how he made it from the front door to the doorway of the drawing room.
He scans the space in search of his brother and some explanation. Instead he spies Katniss sitting on the sofa stock still, her complexion sallow and eyes vacant. Lady Abernathy sits on one side, Primrose on the other, clasping her hand, pleading with her to speak, while Lord Abernathy paces the room.
Something is very wrong here.
He steps forward and Katniss’s eyes snap to his, losing some of their glassy appearance. “Peeta,” she croaks, before standing and launching herself into his arms, “he’s gone.”

hi it’s me again, sorry, may I ask in the regency au how Arthur’s siblings reacted to the kids? Because 1-2 bastard children, understandable, things happen; at least he’s being responsible and taking care of them. But four?
Oh they were pissed when he came home with Ralph and Eleanor. Arthur left home either right before or shortly after Matthew had been sent to live with them. Unlike Alfred, who had been there since he was a baby, Matthew didn’t come to England until he was two and it was a BIG adjustment for him. This is a big reason why he’s slightly more attached to Alasdair as a father figure. So Arthur already has these two children at home, one of whom he really hasn’t met properly. And then he comes back with two more from halfway across the world.
Part of it is about the family’s reputation, because for someone who constantly claims to have the family in mind, Arthur isn’t giving them a good look. The only reason Arthur really does have a chance in society is because he has had such a good naval career and is admired for it. Typical Arthur hypocrisy, but he makes up for it and they can live with that.
The big part is that they could recognize Arthur was fucking up other people’s lives trying to outrun his own pain. Mothers of these children aside, their focus is on the kids themselves. Molly almost lost it on Arthur the first time one of his kids called her “mama,” because the circumstances of their births directly deprived them of that. Matthew’s whole situation is what pissed off Alasdair. Eleanor is the straw that breaks the camel’s back.
Boys are one thing. Bastard or not, they can learn a trade and become respectable in that sense. They can be independent. A girl does not have that luxury. Add on top of that Eleanor is not just a girl, but she’s also biracial. In having her, Arthur has damned her to a life with few prospects. Let’s not get it twisted, they love Eleanor to bits, but they are infuriated at Arthur for the lot he’s given her.
Arthur bringing them home culminated in a huge fight. We’re talking even Alwyn is visibly upset. By the point he got home he’d already started thinking about being a more present father, but they demanded it. Alwyn and Alasdair essentially sat him down and made him actually make plans for things like trusts for the boys and a dowry for Eleanor. Molly didn’t speak to him for a week. Seán kept finding excuses to get out of the house to be away from him.
However, the bright spot in all of this was that for the first time in a while, Arthur was actually home. And the only people excited for him to be there were his kids. Alfred adored Arthur already, and he was dragging a still cautious Matthew along with him. He’d already been at sea with the two younger children, and it was up to him to help Ralph adjust, because it wasn’t easy for him. He had the time to develop enough of a bond with his children that made him realize “Oh God, I actually have to be responsible.” As he realized this and started to take charge independently, things cooled down and a routine was settled into.
Now of course, within the next year he’s running off to fight in the Peninsular Wars. He doesn’t magically become a perfect father by any means. However, he agrees to stop taking such long tours at sea and sticks to European waters. He starts considering settling down, hence why he eventually gets engaged to Emma. He writes to his children more consistently when he is at sea and occasionally sends them things. He also starts whoring around less, and is more careful when he does. It just took him having a Come to Jesus moment with the rest of the family to actually get to that point. There’s still conflict there because he still does have these absences, but it hasn’t come to a head like it did when he first brought home Ralph and Eleanor.

Anyway have a snippet that I think has not made its way onto Tumblr yet o7

Consider: To salvage the alliance between the Goblin and Seelie courts that was jeopardized when Major K.P. Hob ran off with the Master of Ceremonies, The Lord and Lady offer up their next most eligible bachelor, Riz Gukgak, son of the late Sir Pok. And the Seelie Court (still feeling a bit spurned) offers up their least marriageable Earl, The Right Honourable Fabian A. Seacaster.
The Earl is a single Fey in possession of a great fortune and Riz, Esquire is well... not. But the Gukgaks are the most suitable (in non-Goblin standards) family in the Goblin Court, and if Fabian were to settle down with a stable spouse, then his ailing reputation would stand a chance to recover. Even if that spouse is nothing more than a humble journalist keeping the only Goblin newspaper alive.
Funnily enough, unbeknownst to the political machinations of either side, the two of them are some of the best of friends, and unbeknownst to each other, both young Fey have a deep affection for the other.

#I just have a love of big regency dresses what can I say😔🙏#if you haven’t seen them yet this is a study of the GORGEOUS P&P illustrations from the 1890s by Charles Brock#they are all just so spectacular & I stare at them alllllllllll the time wishing I had an ounce of his talent🙏🙏🙏#so I do these studies to pretend even though I change some things😅😅 bc these studies is the best way to improve imo🙏#but I remembered halfway through why I rage quit trying to draw with my fountain pen a year ago😂😂😂#that thing is amazing for writing and I love it like a child#but drawing?! tbh I should have used my drawing ink pen but whatever#I woke up with a hankering to do some crosshatching (which I hate) in an attempt to get over myself#also!!!!!! when Mr Darcy says something like that it’s no wonder Elizabeth jumps at the bit to believe every awful thing she hears about him#it’s like Mr wickham’s dumb stories that nobody else in their right mind would believe#are speaking right to her soul. like OF COURSE that asshole from the assembly would do all of those things😤😤#he called me ugly so OF COURSE he would deny mr wickham his living😤😤#(I don’t blame her I would do the same🤝🤝)#ALSO why tf did he even say that when he’s clearly smitten from the beginning#I’m sure if he knew that she heard him he would simply perish from mortification#well thst is my p&p - inking horror - inspiration rant of the day🙏🙏#(I read p&p at least once a year & it is the only fanfic I really read😅😅😅)#hogwarts legacy#hogwarts legacy fanart#hphl#sebastian sallow#hogwarts legacy mc#hogwarts legacy oc#eloise#eloise babbit#regency au

Beginning | Part 7
Betrayal. That’s what she feels. She sits fuming in the carriage as they ride back home. Eventually the silence becomes unbearable, “When were you planning on telling me?”
“Likely never,” He says with false levity. “When was the last time you saw a man’s pantsless leg?”
Her face floods with heat. Damn it. She knows this game, but she will not be laughed out of her feelings.
“Now that I think of it, how can you be certain I had both legs when I’d left?”
“Do not mock me,” she says through gritted teeth.
After his horrible fall, She could not understand why he did not whimper or scream, the leg looked to be barely attached. How could such an innocuous spill have caused such damage? She’d dropped to the ground in a desperate attempt to aid him, reaching for the limb, when her fingers grasped, not flesh, but wood.
He had lost a leg. At some point over the last two years it had been amputated and he’d never thought to inform her.
Having heard the commotion, Haymitch had arrived. Assessing the situation more quickly than she, or perhaps having been privy to the knowledge ahead of time, he’d discreetly conveyed Peeta to their carriage. Though uninjured, his false leg was in need of repair and he would require assistance in the interim.
The carriage stops in front of Mellark House and she quickly makes her escape from the coach, turning back only after she’s exited, “I will call for your man… He knows, does he not?”
“Could find no way around it.”
The whole household must have known before breakfast. Everyone, but her; Deemed too dim or weak or inconsequential to handle the truth. Oh, she could throw something! Instead she turns and strides inside before he can see her face.
She alerts the valet and ensures he’s settled safely in the drawing room before moving to leave.
“Katniss,” Peeta’s voice interrupts her departure.
She takes a steadying breath before turning towards him, face an impassive mask.
“You are leaving? Would you not sit with me for a while? I will tell you anything you wish to know.”
It's too late for that now. She had forgiven him his lack of correspondence; Was she not also complicit in the silence? But this seems a worse offense. It was one thing to neglect her as he’d mourned his brother, but quite another to have been gravely injured, alone, far from home and refused to alert his family.
She would have raced across land and sea to be by his side had she known; Nothing less than she’d do for Prim. How close had he been to death's door? She cannot think of it without tratourios tears threatening to fall. She’s dizzy with the warring emotions: hurt, anger, fear, and compassion. She needs to get out of this room, out of this house, before she does something foolish like cry. “I should like to walk,” she says, the first thing that comes to mind: of course it’s the wrong response.
He flinches, quickly recovering his expression into a hardened stare, “Then don’t let me keep you. I trust I can count on your discretion.”
And therein lies the problem, he hadn’t trusted her with it before. She gives a curt nod and leaves, heading in the direction of the Odair house.
