What does that mean? ✔️Anglers are required to pass an online educational course, before obtaining a permit. (This permit is separate from the standard saltwater fishing license). ✔️NO chumming from the beach. ✔️IMMEDIATE release of prohibited shark species, by cutting the leader, line or hook to prevent a delayed release. ✔️Prohibited species must remain in the water at all times- no more dragging them onto the beach for selfies! ✔️Requiring the use of non-offset, non-stainless-steel circle hooks to target or harvest sharks when using live or dead natural bait (when fishing from shore and from a vessel). ✔️Requiring the possession/use of a device capable of quickly cutting the leader or hook when targeting sharks (when fishing from shore or a vessel) With the dead sharks that have been washing up, specifically hammerheads, it seems like people have forgot- and a note to tourists, if you’re going to fish our waters, know the laws; you’re required the course and permit too. Despite what the internet makes it seem, Florida is not the wild west and we respect our wildlife. This blue shark struggled so hard for its life on a fisherman's hook it destroyed its own jaw and face to escape. If this doesn’t prove that these animals feel fear, nothing will. It's common sense that a hooked shark's life has been imprinted both physically and behaviorally by the traumatic experience, even while using the latest catch and release methods and gear. A shark's only way to feed and physically engage with its environment is with a healthy functional jaw. Damage like this can be a death sentence to any shark species already suffering drastic decline in population due to overfishing and bycatch. Sharks in our waters are being fished faster than we can understand and protect them. Sportfishing, tournaments and commercial use of sharks are still allowed under current fisheries regulations despite global scientific data assessments urging immediate action to protect our threatened and endangered species. Supporting repetitious exhaustive ,evasive research into their survival thresholds post-release in 2021 is only looking for results to protect a destructive industry and continuous exploitation not the population's welfare, taking precious time and funding away from progressive science to protect species now. Adding more stress, pressure and mortality. Support non-evasive research. We already know post release statistics and effects. These sharks deserve better. We can do better.
