Just outside Forfar sits the ruined Restenneth Priory. Frankly there’s not a lot to see there unless you’re really into mediaeval monasteries, but it’s quite peaceful; I used to have my lunch there sometimes if I’d been working at the nearby landfill. There may be a Pictish connection here as well - it’s speculated that, while the remaining buildings are nowhere near old enough, they sit on or near the site of a church built for King Nechtan in the early 8th century - but the evidence is not conclusive.

Restenneth Priory Angus, Scotland by Mason Taylor/Simon Taylor
Founded in 1153 CE under the patronage of King Malcolm IV (r.1141-1165), Restenneth was once an Augustinian monastery. Over the centuries the number of priests residing here dropped, and by 1606 it was made a secular lordship. Very little of the property remains today – the tower being the most noticeable feature.
