just imagine a new sibling of sin waiting in Copia's office while he's running late and happens to see a to do list on his desk and starts reading it. the first two things on there are "brush Dewdrop (to prevent hairballs)" and "remind everyone to not let Rain eat fish whole (scales and bones dont agree with him)" so they think "huh guess they have cats that live in the abbey" but then they keep reading and its like "figure out how to get Mountain to stop rubbing his antlers on office doorframe" which is a little strange... do they keep deer in the abbey too? all is revealed however when they hear a ruckus in the hallway outside and turn to see a 5'3 hissing gremlin of a ghoul being chased by Copia, who is holding a hairbrush and yelling at Dewdrop that he Will have his fur brushed, followed by a 7'3 giant who is desperately trying to wrestle a whole salmon from a very murderous looking ghoul who is crouching on all fours with the fish in his mouth. the giant ghoul eventually gets distracted by how itchy his antlers are though and starts rubbing them against the doorframe while the other ghoul escapes with the fish.

this probably won’t happen but I have this scene in my head for the upcoming third Downton Abbey movie since Robert James-Collier and Dominic West are confirmed to be returning.

Like the Downton Crew goes to America for whatever reason and because Guy knows them and has a gigantic mansion due to being a famous movie star, he invites them to stay at his house and when they walk in Thomas is just there chillin’ ‘cause he lives there too and everyone who isn’t Mary just has a look like

while Thomas looks like a deer in headlights because his former very rich and proper bosses and many of his former coworkers, most likely including the guy who said he should be horsewhipped, just showed up at his gay little mansion except everyone then feels like they have to pretend they don’t notice the gay part

This would never happen but I can see it in my head and I think if done right it would be funny

More Ghoul Headcanons: Kitchen Edition

Mountain

Hides his snacks on the top shelf to avoid the others stealing them

Has to use a recipe when cooking

Likes hearty meals like stews

Is an excellent shadow, will assist any of the other ghouls or Copia when asked.

Likes to just be in the kitchen

Is the embodiment of a pioneer woman mom

Loves to bake

CanNOT handle spice

Thinks cayenne is spicy

Favorite food is chili and drink is tea

Favorite snacks are fig newtons (yes he knows that they're made with wasps, he thinks it's funny)

Carries epi pens on him for the others

Rain

Is obsessed with making smoothies

Isn't allowed to use the stove after using water on a grease fire

Nearly burned half the abbey down

It's fine, he prefers salads anyway

Do not trust this ghoul with a knife he will find a way to hurt himself by accident

Is just a disaster when in the kitchen

Favorite food is smoked salmon thanks to Dew

Fancy ✨bitch✨ that puts mint and fruits in his water

Is the only ghoul to like Kale

Has a high spice tolerance

Takes forever to do the dishes bc he'll play in the water instead

Dew/Sodo

Favorite snacks are seaweed sheets and Takis

His taste buds went "weird" after his transition

He can't decide what he likes anymore, spicy? Fish? So he decided on both. Sometimes neither

Loves to smoke foods, begs Mountain for dried wood flavors for it

Dew learning to smoke properly was heavy trial and error, some things were edible some were very much not

His favorite changes weekly, but ATM it's smoked veggies and tofu

Is a big garbage ghoul, will throw everything together on a plate and eat it

Drinks coffee but doesn't like energy drinks

Has moderate spice tolerance

Will try anything once

Surprisingly one of the better cooks in the pack

Is lactose intolerant. No this doesn't stop him. Why would it?

Doesn't need a recipe, cooks from memory or guesswork

Has everything labeled and dated

Swiss

NO spice tolerance

Tries to compete with Dew, Cumulus and Rain and it never ends well

Loves comfort food!!! Give this ghoul Macncheese or pierogies and he's happy

Can follow boxed instructions or strict recipes but tries to "improve" them

Survives off of Redbull

Doesn't know the difference between a chef's knife and a paring knife

Thinks bc he's a multi ghoul he can pull pans out of the oven without mitts - has been treated for burns multiple times

Hates doing the dishes

His go to snacks are gummy worms or jerky

Will eat expired food thinking it'll be fine - it never is

Is a 3am fridge raider

Phantom/Aeon

Loves pancakes, absolute favorite food though is fettuccine Alfredo. Has to be fettuccine noodles, spaghetti isn't the same

Has texture issues with food

Absolutely hates ground meats, the texture is bad

Has a sweet tooth

Is a surprisingly decent cook, can manage without recipes

Baking is beyond him

Mistook baking soda for sugar once and Mountain banned him from baking ever again

Doesn't like eggs

Is allergic to peanut butter

Favorite snacks are Oreos or rice crackers

Enjoys cranberry juice

Can't have caffeine - gives him headaches

Aether

One of the better cooks in the pack

Is one of the only ones that can finish the dishes without distractions

Is allergic to citrus fruits

Has an app on his phone to scan packages for ingredients

Will practically drink soy sauce he loves it so much

Favorite snack is cucumbers and Italian dressing

Prefers strawberry jam over grape jelly

Doesn't like seafood

Favorite food is deer chili - shares this with Mountain

Wears gloves when cooking to avoid cross contamination

Cumulus

SPICE QUEEN

Has done every spice challenge possible, downs it like it's nothing

Like Swiss, can read box instructions but don't trust her past that

Has burnt frozen pizza before

Favorite snacks are tortillas and ghost pepper salsa

Eats jalapenos like candy

Needless to say she terrifies others

Favorite food is homemade ramen - she begs the others to make it for her

Package ramen isn't the same

Likes to do the dishes and help out in the kitchen

Does need a step stool however

Favorite drink is hazelnut coffee

Aurora

Junk food junkie

Favorite snacks are Skittles and kettle cooked potato chips

Prefers vitamin water over regular water

Likes to make quick easy meals like grilled cheese etc

Eats at the oddest times, breakfast is 2pm and dinner has been at 4am for her

Leaves her dishes in the sink like a gremlin

Has been banned from eating in the living room

Gets easily distracted while cooking

If she puts her mind to it, can make really elaborate dishes for the pack

However she makes a huge mess of the kitchen when doing so

Cirrus

Can identify spices/ingredients after tasting things once

Is also lactose intolerant, takes lactaid frequently

Loves Korean BBQ

Likes differing temperatures (cold food that's spicy, mints, etc)

Loves blackberries and celery

Is a very good cook, can make most things after trying them once

Her favorite drink is bubble tea

Has medium spice tolerance, like spicy flavor rather than the heat

Would rather dry and put away the dishes than wash them

Has a massive sweet tooth like phantom

The ghouls hunting behaviors

The ghouls never touch siblings and other clergy members, but deers and other humans should never trespass the abbeys grounds. They will end up as a late night ghoul snack.

Dewdrop: He's a terror on 4 legs. Nevertheless he is still extremely quiet. His prey rarely hears him coming. He likes to play with his prey. Catch it, bite/nibble at it, let it run again, and catch it again. He sometimes does hunt with his pack, although he prefers to hunt alone, Aether is the only one that is always allowed to go hunting with him. He eats the heart, always. It's the best part.

Rain: He is the top predator at the abbeys lake. But he does hunt in the woods, but he's not as good as the others, due to his diffrent body(gills, fins, etc.)

Swiss: He's a maniac. He hunts the biggest deers, although he's to slim to catch them. He likes to eat the liver of his prey.

Mountain: He does not hunt often. He has food in the kitchen, so why should he hunt&kill?

The ghoulettes: They either are 100% into a hunt, or do nothing at all. Sometimes they share Mountains POV, sometimes they are like Dew&Swiss. Depends on their mood.

Aether: He usually follows Dew. Dew finds the yummiest prey. But due to his work in the infirmary, he's often very tired. He's very talented at hunting, due to his body (big&bulkie, come on!). However, when he is not there, Dew brings him a part of his catch. Usually he gets the kidneys and the lungs. He finds them yum.

Alpha&Omega: Pretty much like Dew&Aether. Sometimes Terzo will find a "present" on his doorstep, from his lovers. Alpha also brings Secondo presents.

Phantom: Baby. He doesn't hunt. Still to small.

Nap #7: Napping With A Monster

For @ghuleh-recs 💙 who wanted a nap with a certain vampire cowboy…

Yeehaw Dracopia x Reader (this nap is technically part of my cowboy/vampire AU The Vampire's Bride but this can be read on its own!)

These are all stand alone chapters so you do not have to read one before the other! This series came from my post about wanting to nap with Copia all around the abbey. The stories will all have gender neutral readers and soft Copia naps.

Warnings: mentions of vampires feeding, slightly suggestive but still sfw, 800 words (thank you to @gothdaddyissues for the dividers!)

It was strange watching him sleep. 

He was completely still except for the slight up and down movement of his chest.  Swiss had explained that they don’t need to breathe, but mostly they continued to do so out of habit.  Just like how they sometimes ate normal food.  It didn’t do anything to sustain them but sometimes they still enjoyed a more…traditional meal.  

Sometimes they also did it to blend in. 

The old couple that owned the farmhouse seemed oblivious to who they had invited to stay.  Only you and Copia were staying in the house though, the Ghouls were staying in the barn.  It was a decision that Dewdrop had complained loudly about but one low growl from Copia had shut him up.  It was really fascinating to watch how they all interacted with each other and how they respected Copia.  It was obvious though that their respect also came with a healthy dose of fear of their leader which did wonders for keeping them all in line.  

You turned to look around the sparse room but quickly stopped, hissing when the skin around the bites pulled painfully.  He had been on you as soon as the door to the room was closed, pressing you back up against it and mouthing at your neck.  Your cheeks heated up at the memory and then at the memory of all the other times he had fed from you so far.  You hadn’t expected a vampire’s bite to be so—

“You should get some rest.”

His gravelly voice startled you, his accent a little thicker than normal due to how tired he was.  The fight with Mary had taken a lot out of him and even after feeding from you he still needed time to recuperate.  You looked down at your hands and shrugged. 

“I’m not tired.”

“That’s a lie.”  He smirked when you glared at him, your eyes first mesmerized by how bright red his were before trailing down to the blood still staining his mouth.  Your blood.  “I saw you yawning all through dinner.”

“Shouldn’t someone keep watch?”  

“Keep watch from who?  The owners don’t seem the type to kill people in their sleep.”

“What if they realize you’re not…people?”  

“Then I suppose the Ghouls will have something besides deer and rabbits to feed from.”  He held out his hand, the fingers wiggling in the air towards you.  “Come here.”

“Are you still hungry?”  You were crawling towards him anyway so his answer didn’t really matter but you still wanted to know.  “Do you need to feed some more?”

His hands were surprisingly delicate but there was no doubting how strong he was when he easily lifted you up and settled you at his side.  

“I always want to feed from you.”

You shivered at his words, ducking your head down to hide your blush from him.  He probably already knew how much you enjoyed it.  Copia could feel your pulse against his lips and he could hear how fast your heart would start to beat.  You hadn’t even protested the last few times, you had willingly given yourself over to him.  Offering your neck like it was his anytime he wanted it.  

“You can if you need to.”  The unspoken ‘if you want to’ was heavy in the air.  Copia leaned down, sniffing at your neck at first before running his tongue along the fresh bites.  “Please.”

“Such a polite thing you are, even to a monster such as myself.”

You leaned your head back sharply to catch his eyes.  There was a smirk on his face that didn’t match his tone but before you could try to question it you yawned, your mouth opening comically wide.  He raised an eyebrow as you finished, your jaw even popping loudly when you closed your mouth.  It seemed like a silly thing to apologize for but you did it anyway.  

“I’m sorry.  I-I must be more tired than I thought.”

“Then sleep, we can take a little nap together before night falls.”

You weren’t sure what his plans were when that occurred but currently you were too tired to care.  His body was warm thanks to your blood pumping through his veins and you clung to him embarrassingly tight, enjoying the feel of his arms around you.  The excitement of the past few days seemed to have finally caught up with you and it was becoming impossible to keep your eyes open.  

“Copia?”  You waited until you heard his soft ‘hmm?’ before continuing,  “Thank you for keeping me safe.”

His chest vibrated under your hand but you were too close to sleep to tell if he was laughing or grunting to acknowledge what you said.   You let sleep claim you then, your body going slack against the most dangerous man in the Wild West. It was impossible to say if he was a danger to you but deep down it didn’t matter.  

He wasn’t a monster to you anymore.

Site 1 (top 4 pictures): Sunrise at the Combahee River and surrounding lands

In the early hours of August 27, 1782, John Laurens fell in the Battle of the Combahee River, one of the final actions in the Revolutionary War. He was initially buried at the nearby Stock Plantation and was later interred at the Laurens family cemetery at Mepkin Plantation. We based some of our routes around these maps previously provided by @ouiouixmonami and @my-deer-friend. We couldn't directly access the point labeled as Tar Bluff as it was surrounded by private roads, but we were able to access a nearby boat launch. We also traveled through the Donnelly Wildlife Management Area as this may have been around the site of the previous Stock Plantation. It is located near a modern-day road called Stocks Creek Road.

Charles Fraser painted the shown portrait of John Laurens in 1805. Although it was not painted during John's life, it is my personal favorite Laurens portrait (out of the...3-4 that exist). It is not always on display, so I was excited to finally see it in person.

Site 3 (bottom 3 pictures): John Laurens's grave and surrounding landscape at Mepkin Abbey in Moncks Corner, SC

As previously mentioned, Laurens's body was moved from the Stock Plantation to his family's property at Mepkin Plantation. The property is now a Trappist monastery. There was only one other visitor when we stopped by, so it was very quiet and peaceful. The cross and American flag were already present at Laurens's grave. The land overlooks the Cooper River.

We have many more pictures that will probably be posted in multiple subsequent posts, but I wanted to post a concise compilation to commemorate Laurens's death.

September 1st, is the Feast day of St Giles, patron saint of Edinburgh and Elgin.

In quite a list, as well as Edinburgh and Elgin, Giles is also associated with beggars; blacksmiths; breast cancer; breast feeding; cancer patients; disabled people; epilepsy; fear of night; noctiphobics; forests; hermits; horses; lepers; mental illness; outcasts; poor peoples; rams; spur makers; sterility. It got me scurrying to check up noctiphobics, and as I suspected it is an irrational fear of night and darkness.

St. Giles is said to have been a seventh century Athenian of noble birth. His piety and learning made him so conspicuous and an object of such admiration in his own country that, dreading praise and longing for a hidden life, he left his home and sailed for France. At first he took up his abode in a wilderness near the mouth of the Rhone river, afterward near the river Gard, and, finally, in the diocese of Nimes.

He lived on wild roots, herbs and the milk of a deer, which he had befriended as it was being hunted down by the King’s hunters. One day, he was accidentally shot in the knee by an arrow that was meant for the deer. So that he might better mortify the flesh, St. Giles refused to have the knee treated and he remained disabled for life. The King greatly esteemed the holy hermit and gave him land on which to build a monastery which became the large and flourishing Abbey of Saint-Gilles-du-Gard.

St. Giles is usually represented as an old man with an arrow in his knee and accompanied by a deer. Because of his lameness, Saint Giles has become the “Patron Saint of the Handicapped.”

St. Giles’ cult spread rapidly far and wide during the Middle Ages, as is witnessed by the countless churches and monasteries dedicated to him throughout Europe. His feast day is September 1st.

Cumulus going into rut early and unexpectedly. She goes a little feral, a little primal and ends up following this one scent that caught her senses. It’s earthy and musky but there’s a sweetness there that reminds her of almonds. It has her mouth watering. She follows it through the woodlands in the abbey grounds, her cock getting harder and harder the deeper into the woods she goes, the scent getting stronger the deeper she gets. She ends up outside Mountain’s greenhouse, the scent is so strong there it makes her head spin and her cock kick. She stalks into the greenhouse growling as she goes, she’s getting impatient now and just wants to find whoever that amazing smell is coming from so she can stick her cock into them. She finds Mountain stood in the middle of the greenhouse, wide eyed and trembling a little. He looks a little like a deer caught in headlights. He can smell her rut and knows how fucked is to be alone with her right now. He runs. So does she, chasing him through the woods. He might have long legs and a knowledge of the woods like no other ghoul, but Cumulus is fast and nimble, able to cut corners and keep up with him with no effort. She catches him easily, tripping him and watching him fall face first into the dirt. He doesn’t even put up a fight, all fight and struggle gone from his body and presents himself right there and then for her to mount him and fuck her fat her knot deep into him and hope that she breeds a litter of kits into him. He’s wet just at the thought of it, and from the way Cumulus is scenting the air, she knows.

You Are A Haunted House

[Don't you just hate it when your boss places a curse upon you post mortem? Or, what happens when Bea gets promoted Sister Imperator. Feat. Mountain and Rain.] Below the cut.

There is a notion that all old buildings are haunted; That the creaks and groans are not that of the ancient wood settling, nails squeaking as it expands and contracts with the seasons, but rather the forlorn groans of those long since passed.

Whether these ghosts are real or the conjuration of of an excitable mind is left up in the air, no one has indisputable proof of life after death, and yet, so many hold to superstition, even if they are not wholly aware of it.

Those who hold onto traditions passed down through the generations, despite their original purpose being lost in the relative comforts of modern living.

Few have to worry about wayward spirits leading them astray in the forest, nor need to fear that the creature they are viewing prancing about the meadow is not really a deer, but we as human beings know almost instinctually when something is not as it seems.

And in those moments, even the faithless turn to God.

Beatrix Milne, however, turns to Mountain.

"It's fuckin' creepy is what it is."

Before the pair stands the ruins of the former "Little Chapel" -it never had a proper name before, always referred to as either the small or little chapel- that sits a ways into the forest surrounding the abbey's grounds.

Despite only amounting to a singular room with no roof or even a door to speak of, Bea finds the structure... ominous and dark, though not the sort of darkness she's grown accustomed to working around the abbey.

The forest is still here, and while Bea may not know much about the natural world beyond what is necessary to do her job, she knows this stillness, this deep, unsettling quiet, is not normal.

Mountain, too, is silent as he takes in the wreckage.

"...You think it's haunted?" Bea laughs nervously, trying to bring a little light to the situation, but the ghoul gives her a look that has her stepping just a smidge closer into the safety of his towering form.

"For such a brash young woman, you certainly frighten easily, Miss. Milne." Mountain chuckles, offering her his hand as he walks towards the burnt out building, dry leaves crunching under his cloven hooves, "Not all places touched by man are left with an impression of them."

"There are no ill memories in this place, save for that of its end."

Bea follows the ghoul through the narrow threshold, her boots finding stone where she thought she might hear the soft squeak of weathered boards or damp soil.

The interior of the building is not in much better shape than the exterior; Though, Bea supposes, this may still count as being outside, given the lack of protection from the elements.

A cold drop of rain water manages to make its way down through the dense canopy and lands directly in the space made by the hood of her jacket and her bare neck, causing her to yelp, and the earth giant to snort.

"Fuckin' cold!" she hisses, shaking her shoulders as she feels the water trickle down her back, "Remind me why we're out here again??"

"A bit of water isn't the end of the world." Mountain smirks, earning a harrumph from the small woman, "In order to properly care of the grounds in my absence-"

Bea narrows her eyes at him.

"-Which I know you're already doing just fine-" he adds quickly to avoid starting an argument, "You need to be more acquainted with the parts of the property that you weren't allowed to visit before."

"Now that Sister Imperator has..." he inhales deeply, "...gone to see the father... It has fallen to Papa... Frater Imperator to decide how the staff will manage things in her absence."

"...I don't know whether I'm being promoted or being set up right now, Mountain." Bea says after a moment of quiet contemplation, "Sister Imperator forbade me from coming out this way for the sake of my personal safety, I don't think Copia changing his title means I am any safer here now than I was before..."

"It's true that parts of the grounds are more dangerous than others, and that this place is no exception, but if you want to stay-"

"-I do." she interrupts, then frets, "I-Is that old man thinking of kicking me out??"

Mountain stiffens, "I, well... He..."

"Does he think I'm not capable of doing my job??"

"No, but-"

"Mountain, I can't lose this fucking job." Bea pleads, grabbing hold of the front of Mountain's shirt, "I can't fucking go back to-"

"Bea." Mountain grabs her shoulders, "I am doing this so you don't have to worry about that."

"...What... What are you going to do?" she asks, feeling the air around her grow cold, "Mountain, what is this? Mountain, I'm scared-"

"Just close your eyes and it will all be over soon..." he whispers, moving his hand up to cup her face, "...Just..."

"-Wake up already!"

Bea bolts upright in bed, her eyes searching the dark expanse of her bedroom, coughing a little as she groans and falls back down onto the mattress, cringing when she's met by the pool of sweat that had gathered beneath her in her sleep.

"Fuck..." she wheezes out, "That was a fucking stupid nightmare..."

She coughs again, pulling herself upright and kicking her feet over the side of the bed, "Water..."

Wandering over to the sink, Bea turns on the tap and runs it for a short while until the water turns cold, rinsing out the mug she used for her tea earlier before filling it up.

She stares out the window as she drinks, eyes trained on the lake beyond her garden gate.

Slightly obscured by the waves rolling over the water from, Bea can see the shine of Rain's scales growing beneath the surface, and stares quietly as the ghoul slithers about in his beastly form.

It's an oddly soothing sight for what it is; A monster, impossibly large and frightening making its presence known to her, because he somehow always knows when she's awake... but Bea will take comfort where she can find it.

Lately -at least since Sister Imperator's passing- Bea's been feeling... out of sorts.

She has to wonder if the spell the older woman had cast upon her were beginning to fade now that she was gone.

Bea thinks of her nightmare, and the many more that came before it.

Oddly specific, always featuring Mountain, always ending in... not quite death but something akin to it.

She's not sure how to describe the sensation.

With a spluttering cough, she is brought back to the present, having inhaled a bit of her water trying not to spit out the contents in her mouth, but unable to swallow.

She stands over the sink hacking and wheezing for a solid minute before she manages to get her lungs to cooperate with her, again.

She swallows and goes to pour the rest of her drink down the drain, when she notices a splattering of dark liquid standing out against the metal; Acrid and watery, so dark it almost seems black until she pushes herself away from the counter and her shadow moves, revealing the rosy red hue of it.

Blood.

She brings a hand to her lips, feeling it stick to her thumb as she tries to wipe her mouth clean.

It's not... She's not...

What is this?

Why is this...

Why is this happening?

And then suddenly...

"Mountain?" she calls out weakly, looking towards the door, and she can almost see him in her head, hand poised to knock, now frozen in confusion.

"...How did you...?"

And then she can see him.

As if she's standing on the porch beside him, like she's outside, she can even feel the night air on her overwarm skin, and-

"...Mount, I think I'm gonna throw up..."
