Cinderella (1950)
Tumblr media
It’s no wonder Cinderella saved Walt Disney Studios from bankruptcy. It’s a timeless tale with universal appeal, wonderful visuals, classic songs, and humor as well.
Orphaned and now living with her cruel stepmother (Eleanor Audley) and two wicked stepsisters (Helene Stanley and Rhoda Williams), Cinderella (voiced by Ilene Woods) now works as their servant. Though faced with non-stop adversities, Cinderella never loses hope that someday her dreams will come true. When the King (Luis van Rooten) organizes a royal ball to find a suitable wife for his son, Lady Tremaine becomes determined to prevent Cinderella from attending.
Though you know how the story will go, Cinderella is surprisingly emotional. Our heroine is so kind and sweet with the way she befriends the small animals around her and keeps a cheerful demeanor despite everything. You can’t help but fall in love with the young maiden who loves to sing and dreams of a better life. You would want her to succeed even if she wasn’t at the mercy of a truly despicable villain - and we're given one you'll love to hate. Lady Tremaine is as good an antagonist as you could get. Her poker face as she finds ways to demolish Cinderella's spirit, the hatred and jealousy she feels inside her heart... it makes you feel what’s at stake.
For every scene of injustice tearing you up inside, there another to make you smile. This story is filled with comedic side characters of the animal- and royal court-kind. These provide the necessary peaks and valleys to keep you invested. Check out the Grand Duke and the way he keeps switching his monocle from one eye to the other.
In terms of visuals, there are a few scenes where the background characters stand out due to their stillness. Overall, it's a gorgeous picture film, with its most striking moments in the latter half as Cinderella dons her now-iconic gown while the immemorable Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo plays.
Though she is not headstrong and in a way just sits and waits for someone to come to her rescue, Cinderella is a fully-realized person. She isn’t kind because she dreams of being rewarded (she has no idea that she’s in a fairy tale). She’s gentle and loving because she believes it’s the right thing to do. This film believes in true love, in people being able to find a way out of the soot and into a kingdom of happiness with all its heart. The songs prove it to you. My favorite is A Wish Your Heart Makes, but the previously mentioned Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo and Sweet Nightengale is worth catching just to see one of the most creative duets I've ever seen.
Versions of the Cinderella story date as far back as the reign of Pharaoh Amasis (570-536 B.C.). There's a reason we keep telling this story even when one might raise an eyebrow at a tale whose female protagonist dreams of escaping her back-breaking life by finding true love. I can't stop you from being the grumpy kid who latches onto this aspect of the film and story. I can only say that it's hard not to feel warm-hearted at the sight of Cinderella, who refuses to have her spirit be broken even when there is seemingly no hope left. It's a fairy tale and delivers every essential element you'd want from a story that begins with "Once Upon a Time..."
Cinderella features memorable songs, a moving story, and laugh-out-loud gags. It preserves the essential elements of the story and mixes in some new ingredients (like the slipper being made of glass, for example). Everyone should see Cinderella at least once. (On Blu-ray, June 30, 2015)

When early explorers first set out West across the Atlantic, most people thought the world was flat. Most people thought if you sailed far enough West, you would drop off a plane into nothing. Those vessels sailing out into the unknown, they weren't carrying noblemen or aristocrats, artists or merchants. They were crewed by people living on the edge of life: the madmen, orphans, ex-convicts, outcasts like myself. As a felon, I'm an unlikely candidate for most things. But perhaps not for this. Perhaps I am the most likely.
