My 30 years protecting the Queen: dry humour, heartfelt gifts and travelling the world by Hugo Daniel (September 17th 2022)
Taking in the beauty of a misty Scottish moor amid the bustle of a Balmoral grouse shoot, the royal protection officer Dick Griffin turned to check on his charge, the Queen, only to get the shock of his life.
It was September 1995 and, at first glance, the then 69-year-old monarch had disappeared. As he searched anxiously through the thick fog, he finally caught sight of her — lying flat on the ground, a dead grouse beside her.
“Because it was so foggy we couldn’t see [that the grouse had] hit her in the chest,” Griffin said. “You can imagine the velocity of something like that falling down to the ground — it just flattened her completely. So I had to get her up and discreetly brush all the feathers and plumes away from her. She was shaken up and badly bruised.”
The equerry who had shot the bird was understandably embarrassed. “But then [they] saw the funny side of it, because the Queen saw the funny side of it. She said, ‘What an odd thing to happen’.”
Griffin, 71, shared his memories of more than 30 years as a protection officer for the royal family over a cup of coffee in a Pret a Manger near Buckingham Palace. His son, Gareth, 42, is a uniformed firearms officer and was on duty at the palace when the Queen’s coffin arrived there on Tuesday evening.
Since her death, a news clip from the Platinum Jubilee has re-emerged in which Griffin revealed how, during a walk on the Balmoral estate, the Queen posed for a photo with two American tourists who did not recognise her.
He said he was glad the story had been a “comfort” to people, with many reposting it and calling it their “favourite Queen story”. He described her as a “remarkable, caring, wonderful person”.
Griffin, who had been due to have lunch with the Queen next month, will attend the smaller, more personal committal service at Windsor Castle’s St George’s Chapel tomorrow after the funeral at Westminster Abbey. He says all seven police officers who worked for the monarch have been invited.
Griffin now gives talks about his career to raise money for the Kent, Surrey and Sussex air ambulance.
His three decades with the royals began in 1982 as part of a team that reorganised palace security after Michael Fagan broke into the Queen’s bedroom. After that, he was assigned to act as Prince Edward’s protection officer at Cambridge University from 1983 to 1986. He worked on assignment for Prince Philip for 13 years until 1999 and then for the Queen until he retired in 2013.
He travelled with the Queen and Prince Philip to 161 countries. “Often you were in the car with them, just chatting away. She would ask about my family and all my marathon running. Once I went to South Africa to do the Comrades marathon, which is 55 miles, and you had a chip on your shoe so people could follow you at home. She got one of her footmen in front of a computer for ten hours to follow me, to see how I was getting on. The footman wasn’t too impressed.”
When Griffin’s running club in Bromley, southeast London, held a party to celebrate his 100th marathon, the Queen marked the occasion with a letter, showing her wry sense of humour. In it, she jokes: “We are delighted that your employers allow you sufficient time to train for, and take part in, such events.”
At his first meeting with the Queen and Prince Philip in 1983 at Windsor Castle, a week before he went to Cambridge with Edward, the couple were keen to learn about the background of the man who would be guarding their youngest child.
“We were sitting on lovely chairs and the staff were giving us coffee and the Queen said to me, ‘Can you tell Philip and me what you used to do before you came to royalty protection?’
“It was probably a question I’d prefer they’d not asked, because my job for the past six years had been [at Scotland Yard’s obscene publications branch policing] prostitution, the brothels, the sex shops and pornographic cinemas.
“The Queen said, ‘Good gracious, Mr Griffin. What on earth does Edward need a police officer with your qualifications for?’ and, before I could answer, Prince Philip said, ‘I don’t know. But they can have some wonderful parties at Cambridge.’
“That was my first experience of Prince Philip and his one-liners.”
The next time Griffin met the Queen, he remembers her sitting on the floor of the Waterloo Chamber at Windsor Castle to watch a private performance of a play that Edward and friends had originally performed at Cambridge, in which Griffin had a cameo role.
The roof was leaking. “Water was landing on top of the Queen’s head. She was all dressed up, having just come from dinner. Several members of the household offered her a seat, but she said ‘that’s not necessary’ and sat on the floor in the aisle and put a programme over her head to keep dry.
“That was one of my first impressions of the Queen, and I just thought, ‘What an amazing lady.’”
Griffin’s three-decade career as protection officer spanned security threats ranging from the IRA to Isis.
“Of course with Islamic terrorism and suicide bombers, we had to really ramp things up,” he said. “But nothing fazed the Queen and Prince Philip. We’d try to encourage them sometimes not to be so open on walkabouts, but nothing would change her.”
He was in the car with the Queen on the day two months after 9/11 when an American Airlines flight crashed in Queens, New York. It would turn out to be an accident, but there were fears at first that it was terrorism-related.
“I was bringing the Queen back from Windsor Castle and my mobile phone rang and it was my son. I spoke to Gareth and he said there might be another terrorist attack.
“I told the Queen, and then, five minutes later, Tony Blair rings up to brief the Queen, and I always remember her saying, ‘Yes, prime minister, I know. My policeman’s son has just phoned to tell me.’”
In 2005 Griffin’s first grandchild, Joshua, was born and the Queen insisted on meeting him.
“She said to me in the car one day, ‘For the last nine months, all you’ve talked about is how excited you are about being a grandfather, and now your grandson has been born, you haven’t even bothered to introduce me.’ So I had to arrange a date and time so the Queen could have a cuddle. She was thrilled.”
He saw her love for her own grandchildren, too. For Christmas in 2010, Griffin and the other protection officers decided to give the Queen a wind-up clockwork duck that played music and laid an egg every 30 seconds, something they had found at a flea market on a recent state visit to the United Arab Emirates.
“My wife wrapped it up all beautifully with ribbons and gave it to the equerry to present it to the Queen on Christmas Day. We got this beautiful letter from the Queen saying how much she enjoyed it and Edward’s son, James, had so much fun playing with it.”
In the letter, the Queen wrote: “To the PPOs, many thanks for the unusual Christmas present from you all. It certainly livened things up and little James’s face was a picture when the duck laid her eggs! Thanks for making us laugh.”
When Griffin retired, in 2013, the Queen gave him the best gift of all. She had paid for him to have a retirement party in the state department at the palace, with 200 guests, and at eight o’clock she joined the party, with Prince Philip and the Earl of Wessex.
“That was the biggest present she could give me,” he said.

Everytime I watch this anime online, I really enjoy the music, it is just pure soul of that anime. The anime is openly dreamlike, and like most dreams it moves uncertainly down a path with many turnings. action & adventurecategory did not create a better anime and you can now watch for free on this website. Strike the Blood is one of the biggest surprises of the year 2013. Forced together by circumstance, the two form an unlikely alliance as Kojou comes to terms with his abilities and they both struggle to protect the city from various emerging chaotic forces. Fearing Kojou’s destructive potential, the Lion King Organization sends in an apprentice sword-shaman, Yukina Himeragi, to monitor, and should he become a threat, kill the boy deemed the world’s most powerful vampire. It isn’t long before he is thrust into the center of attention when it is discovered that he is the fourth primogenitor, an immensely powerful vampire whom most consider to be merely a legend.

THE CAVALCADE OF AMERICA:  “SKYLARK SONG”
June 21, 1948
Tumblr media
The Cavalcade of America ran on NBC Radio from 1935 to 1953. It featured events from American history, usually dramatizing the positive aspects of the nation’s past. Additionally, the show attempted to end criticism of its sponsor, the Du Pont Company due to negative publicity from profiting by producing gunpowder during World War I.
Tumblr media
Throughout the years, actors and actresses from Broadway and Hollywood were featured. The show was broadcast live from the Longacre Theatre in NYC and repeated later in the day.
Tumblr media
In 1952, the series was transferred to NBC television and lasted until 1957, nearly identical to the run of “I Love Lucy” on CBS. For six months the radio and television versions also overlapped. The TV version featured “Lucy” actors Robert Foulk, Dayton Lummis, Byron Foulger, Maurice Marsac, Ross Elliott, Roy Roberts, Hayden Rorke, Pierre Watkin, Will Wright, Nestor Paiva, Joi Lansing, Dorothea Wolbert, Don Rickles, Burt Mustin, Lurene Tuttle, Gladys Hurlbut, Paul Picerni, Richard Reeves, James Flavin, Larry J. Blake, Peter Graves, Rhodes Reason, Irving Bacon, Milton Frome, Eleanor Audley, Joe Mell, Mary Ellen Kay, Mario Siletti, John Banner, Harry Bartell, Robert Carson, William Fawcett, Mabel Paige, June Whitley Taylor, Iron Eyes Cody, Strother Martin, Norma Varden, Madge Blake, Ellen Corby, Dick Elliott, Vivi Janiss, Ida Moore, Elizabeth Patterson, Frank J. Scannell, Herb Vigran, and William Schallert.
Synopsis: "Skylark Song" by Virginia Radcliff is the story of Grace Moore,  charting her climb from a small southern church choir to star of the Metropolitan Opera House in New York City.
Tumblr media
Grace Moore (December 5, 1898 – January 26, 1947) was an operatic soprano and actress in musical theatre and film. Born in Slabtown, Tennessee, she was nicknamed the "Tennessee Nightingale." Her films helped to popularize opera by bringing it to a larger audience. She was nominated for the Academy Award for  for her performance in One Night of Love. In 1947, Moore died in a plane crash at the age of 48. She published her autobiography in 1944 titled You're Only Human Once.
Tumblr media
In 1953, a film about her life was released titled So This Is Love starring Kathryn Grayson and Lucy’s friend Merv Griffin. The movie featured “Lucy” players Herb Vigran, Victorio Bonanova, Moroni Olsen, Mario Siletti, Ray Kellogg, Olin Howland, Tristram Coffin, Jack Chefe, and Barbara Pepper as Fat Girl with Sailor in Nightclub!
Tumblr media
Lucille Ball (Grace Moore) may be the last person on earth one would consider to play one of the most famous opera singers of all time - but this was radio - and recordings of Grace Moore and studio singers were used to supplement the program. Ball affects a slight southern accent during the broadcast. Operatic trills and other miscellaneous singing by the character was provided by Marjorie Brett and Marjorie Hamilton.
Tumblr media
Lucille Ball signed the contract for “Skylark Song” on June 11, 1948 and was paid $3,500 for her work.
Tumblr media
The story starts when Moore is 17, convincing her father to allow her to attend music school. She goes to New York City where her father tells her to “only take parts in Shakespeare”.  She tells him she will report to theatrical impresario David Belasco to ask him if she can play Juliet.
Tumblr media
GRACE: “Hark! What light through yonder window breaks...”
Belasco stops her. Moore is reciting Romeo’s speech because that is the role she played in school. Lucille Ball purposely does a very stilted rendition, with a large country twang.
Tumblr media
Lucy Ricardo also did Romeo and Juliet in school, later hoping to repeat her triumph with Orson Welles.
Tumblr media
Belasco sends her to see composer and producer George Gershwin, who unfortunately hasn’t got a job for her.
Tumblr media
In 1920, Moore finally lands a job in the chorus of a Broadway show called “Hitchy-Koo.” The show was produced by Raymond Hitchcock (hence the unusual name) with music by Jerome Kern (”Showboat”).
GRACE: “Well, Daddy, what do you think of your skylark, now?”
Tumblr media
Grace lands an audition at the Metropolitan Opera but is told that her Broadway work has damaged her classically-trained voice and sent away.
Tumblr media
GRACE: “I’m either a skylark or a mud hen. There’s nothing in between.”
A fortune teller named Carmen tells her that she should go to Europe and make her name. In a montage sequence, Moore trains in Europe. Now at the peak of her vocal range, Grace finally gets a job at the Metropolitan Opera as Mimi in La Boheme.
Tumblr media
Her proud father and mother attend Grace’s triumphant opening night.
Tumblr media
Announcer Ted Pearson sums up Grace’s remarkable journey, as well as her tragic death in a plane crash in Denmark.
Tumblr media
Pearson reminds us that next week on The Cavalcade of America Basil Rathbone will play Thomas Jefferson in “The Common Glory”...
Tumblr media
...and that Lucille Ball will soon be seen in the Paramount Picture Sorrowful Jones, despite the fact that the film will not premiere until a year later, June 1949. Filming began on April 7, 1948.

Glenn Ligon
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Glenn Ligon (born January 1, 1960) is an American conceptual artist whose work explores race, language, desire, sexuality, and identity. Ligon engages in intertextuality with other works from the visual arts, literature, and history, as well as his own life. He is noted as one of the originators of the term Post-Blackness.
Early life and career
He was born in 1960 in the Bronx. At the age of 7, his divorced, working-class parents got a scholarship for him and his brother to attend Walden School, a high-profile progressive private school on Manhattan's Upper West Side. Ligon graduated from Wesleyan University with a B.A. in 1982. After graduating, he worked as a proofreader for a law firm, while in his spare time he painted in the abstract Expressionist style of Willem de Kooning and Jackson Pollock. In 1985, he participated in the Whitney Museum of American Art's Independent Study Program. He currently lives and works in New York City.
Work
Ligon works in multiple media, including painting, neon, video, photography, and digital media such as Adobe Flash for his work Annotations. Ligon's work is greatly informed by his experiences as an African American and as a gay man living in the United States.
Painting
Although Ligon's work spans sculptures, prints, drawings, mixed media and even neon signs, painting remains a core activity. His paintings incorporate literary fragments, jokes, and evocative quotes from a selection of authors, which he stencils directly onto the canvas by hand. In 1989, he mounted his first solo show, "How It Feels to Be Colored Me," in Brooklyn. This show established Ligon's reputation for creating large, text-based paintings in which a phrase chosen from literature or other sources is repeated over and over, eventually dissipating into murk. Untitled (I Am a Man) (1988), a reinterpretation of the signs carried during the Memphis Sanitation Strike in 1968 — made famous by Ernest Withers’s photographs of the march —, is the first example of his use of text.
Ligon gained prominence in the early 1990s along with a generation of artists like Lorna Simpson, Gary Simmons, and Janine Antoni. In 1993, Ligon began the first of three series of gold-colored paintings based on Richard Pryor's groundbreaking stand-up comedy routines from the 1970s. The scatological and racially charged jokes Ligon depicts speak in the vernacular language of the street and reveal a complex and nuanced vision of black culture.
In A Feast of Scraps (1994–98), he inserted pornographic and stereotypical photographs of black men, complete with invented captions ("mother knew," "I fell out" "It's a process") into albums of family snapshots including graduation photographs, vacation snapshots, pictures of baby showers, birthday celebrations, and baptisms, some of which include the artist's own family. Like almost all of Ligon's art, this project draws out the secret histories and submerged meanings of inherited texts and images.
For Notes on the Margin of the Black Book (1991–93), Ligon separately framed 91 erotic photographs of black males cut from Robert Mapplethorpe's 1988 "Black Book," installing them in two horizontal rows. Between them are two more rows of small framed typed texts, 78 comments on sexuality, race, AIDS, art and the politically inflamed controversy over Mapplethorpe's work launched by then-Texas Congressman Dick Armey.
Another series of large paintings was based on children's interpretations of 1970s black-history coloring books.
Installation art
In 1994, the art installation To Disembark was shown at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C. The title alludes to the title of a book of poetry by Gwendolyn Brooks. "To Disembark" functions in both works to evoke the recognition that African Americans are still coping with the remnants of slavery and its ongoing manifestation in racism. In one part of the installation, Ligon created a series of packing crates modeled on the one described by ex-slave Henry "Box" Brown in his "Narrative of Henry Box Brown who escaped from Slavery Enclosed in a Box 3 Feet Long and 2 Wide." Each crate played a different sound, such as a heartbeat, a spiritual, or contemporary rap music. Around each box, the artist placed posters in which he characterized himself, in words and period images, as a runaway slave in the style of 19th century broadsheets circulated to advertise for the return of fugitive slaves. In another part of the exhibition, Ligon stenciled four quotes from a Zora Neale Hurston essay, "how it feels to be colored me," directly on the walls: "I feel most colored when I am thrown against a sharp white background," "I remember the very day that I became colored," "I am not tragically colored," and "I do not always feel colored." Ligon found Hurston's writing illuminating because she explores the idea of race as a concept that is structured by context rather than essence.
Neon works
Since 2005, Ligon has made neon works. Warm Broad Glow (2005), Ligon’s first exploration in neon, uses a fragment of text from Three Lives, the 1909 novel by American author Gertrude Stein. Ligon rendered the words “negro sunshine” in warm white neon, the letters of which were then painted black on the front. In 2008, the piece was selected to participate in the Renaissance Society's group exhibit, "Black Is, Black Ain't"., and appeared on the Whitney Museum’s facade in 2011. Other neon works are derived from neon sculptures by Bruce Nauman; One Live and Die (2006) stems from Nauman’s 100 Live and Die (1984), for example.
Film
In 2009, Ligon completed short film based on Thomas Edison's 1903 silent film Uncle Tom's Cabin. Playing the character of Tom, Ligon had himself filmed re-creating the last scene of Edison's movie, which also provided his film's title: "The Death of Tom." But the film was incorrectly loaded in the hand-crank camera that the artist used so no imagery appeared on film. Embracing this apparent failure, Ligon decided to show his film as an abstract progression of lights and darks with a narrative suggested by the score composed and played by jazz musician Jason Moran.
Exhibitions
Ligon's work has been the subject of exhibitions throughout the United States and Europe. Recent solo exhibition include the Studio Museum in Harlem, New York (2001); the Kunstverein München, Germany (2001), the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis (2000); the St. Louis Art Museum (2000); the Institute of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia (1998); and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (1996). A first survey of Ligon's work opened at The Power Plant in Toronto in June 2005 and traveled to the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh; Contemporary Arts Museum in Houston; Wexner Center for the Arts in Columbus; Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery in Vancouver, and the Mudam in Luxembourg. The first comprehensive mid-career retrospective devoted to Ligon's work was held at the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth in 2011. Group shows in which Ligon has participated include the Whitney Biennial (1991 and 1993), Biennale of Sydney (1996), Venice Biennale (1997), Kwangju Biennale (2000), and documenta 11 (2002).
In 2013, Ligon started writing letters to artists whose work had made an impression on him in his life, asking if he could borrow that particular work for an exhibition. While some of the letters were sent to living artists, others are letters that Ligon would have sent those of the past, including Willem de Kooning, Franz Kline, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Andy Warhol and Felix Gonzalez-Torres. The resulting show at Nottingham Contemporary in 2015 featured work by 45 different artists from Warhol to Steve McQueen, as well as Black Panther Party posters, press shots and footage from the Birmingham riot of 1963.
Collections
Ligon's work is represented in many public collections including the Baltimore Museum of Art, Baltimore; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Philadelphia; the Guggenheim Museum, New York; the Tate Modern, London; the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; the Blanton Museum of Art, Austin; the Wadsworth Atheneum, Hartford; the Warwick Arts Centre, Coventry; and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York. In 2012, the National Gallery of Art in Washington bought the painting Untitled (I Am a Man) (1988).
In 2012, Ligon was commissioned to create the first site-specific artwork for the New School's University Center building, designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, on the corner of 14th Street and Fifth Avenue in Greenwich Village. The work will feature about 400 feet of text from Walt Whitman’s Leaves of Grass rendered in pink neon lights, running around the top of a wall in the center’s first-floor café.
Recognition
In 2005, Ligon won an Alphonse Fletcher Foundation Fellowship for his art work. In 2006 he was awarded the Skowhegan Medal for Painting. In 2010, he won a United States Artists Fellow award.
In 2009, President Barack Obama added Ligon's 1992 Black Like Me No. 2, on loan from the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, to the White House collection, where it was installed in the President's private living quarters. The text in the selected painting is from John Howard Griffin's 1961 memoir Black Like Me, the account of a white man's experiences traveling through the South after he had his skin artificially darkened. The words "All traces of the Griffin I had been were wiped from existence" are repeated in capital letters that progressively overlap until they coalesce as a field of black paint. Art critic Jerry Saltz called this work a "black-and-white beauty."
Art market
On the occasion of Ben Stiller and David Zwirner’s "Artists For Haiti" charity auction at Christie's in 2011, Jennifer Aniston set a record prize for Glenn Ligon's work by purchasing his Stranger #44 (2011). At $450,000, Aniston beat Ligon’s previous record of $434,500 for Invisible Man (Two Views) (1991), realized at Sotheby's in September 2010. Untitled #1 (Second Version) (1990), a painting in which the words "I Feel Most Colored When I Am Thrown Against a Sharp White Background" repeat again and again, sold for $2.6 million at Christie' New York in 2014.
Ligon is represented by Regen Projects in Los Angeles; Luhring Augustine in New York; and Thomas Dane Gallery in London.
Personal life
According to the Federal Election Commission (FEC), Ligon donated $30,000 to the presidential campaign of Hillary Clinton in September 2016.

Glenn Ligon
Tumblr media
Happy birthday to Glenn Ligon.
https://www.wikiwand.com/en/Glenn_Ligon

Free Jazz Composer Michael Moss Debuts Two Major Compositions On His New Release HELIX. Multi-instrumentalist/composer Michael Moss, a veteran of New York’s free jazz scene, has assembled a brand-new band, the Accidental Orchestra, featuring 22 of the most exciting improvisers on the jazz scene today. His new CD HELIX is the premiere recording of a pair of his latest extended compositions. HELIX kicks off with “The Old One,” which gets its title from Einstein’s name for God. Moss describes this five-piece suite as “an initiation into sacred ground.” He views it as part of a musical tradition stretching from the earliest ritual over the dead to Bach’s Mass in B Minor, through Native American rites of passage into the spirit world, the Jewish mourner’s Kaddish, and Buddhist funeral rituals. Moss wrote "See Sharp or Be Flat/C# or Bb" while recovering from a fracture suffered in tripping over a curb. The composer brings a quirky sense of humor to the situation, right down to deciding to name his ensemble the Accidental Orchestra in memory of the incident. Moss aimed to let the band swing on this contrapuntal theme and variations mixing jazz, rhythm and blues, and the joy of dance. “Throughout I refer to Norwegian Wood (The Beatles), I Feel Good (James Brown), and Bags Groove (the Modern Jazz Quartet), but do not resort to familiar big band tropes,” Moss explains. “This is a type of string orchestra, but with lots of jazz musicians pushing the boundaries.” The Chicago-born, Madison, Wisconsin-educated Michael Moss has been an active member of the New York jazz scene for 50 years, earning recognition for his skill and imagination as a multi-reed player, and for the freshness and intensity of his writing. The self-described “farthest-out cat” was a mainstay of Manhattan’s famed loft jazz scene, playing with Sam Rivers, Dave Liebman, Paul Bley, Annette Peacock, McCoy Tyner, Elvin Jones, Richie Beirach and scores of others. He’s equally at home from a duo setting to an orchestra of 50-plus players. As a composer, Moss assigns time signatures to segments of his pieces, but the final form of any given composition depends entirely on the interaction of the musicians.  A sense of space marks much of his work.  Though, like most avant artists he shifts tempos frequently and sometimes drops the meter altogether, he and the group under his direction tend to listen more and play in the openings.  Though his music clearly arises from the jazz tradition, Moss draws heavily from disparate folk idioms.  American blues and Latin rhythmic influences are obvious in his work, but Israeli folk melodies (out of his own Jewish origins) or Tibetan chants (appropriated on a trip to India) are equally likely to emerge in his performances.  Listeners can’t help but be captivated by what they hear, as they accompany Moss and the Accidental Orchestra on this life-long journey. "Playing free, but still playing together--it's a question of moving forward by moving backwards and sideways at the same time," Moss says obliquely, and yet the music seems to do just this, and makes sense. Robert LaBrasca, Press Connection and Rolling Stone writer (1986). "Moss' music is conceptually complex and musically brilliant, reaching across ages, cultures and continents for rhythms, phrases, melodies, and harmonics to produce a sound which is fascinating yet unsettling because it is foreign but so familiar." Fred Waitzkin liner notes Michael Moss/Four Rivers Cross Current (1978). What The Press Is Saying About HELIX  "This is a stunning achievement – one that demands our attention." Grady Harp, Amazon, April 2, 2018   "This fantastic album gets a MOST HIGHLY RECOMMENDED from me, with an “EQ” (energy quotient) rating of 4.99." "The 20:37 “C# or Bb” is not only my choice from this album, it’s also my personal favorite improvised set (yet) in 2018!  All the players in the orchestra challenge the boundaries on this one, & I’ve no doubt that those of you who thrive on music that stimulates creativity (in many different directions at once) will be playing this one over & over & OVER again!" "The orchestra Michael assembled for this stunning trip is amazing in and of itself…over fifteen minutes of far-out fun for all." "If it’s etherspace you’re craving for in your listening adventures, you’ll find “Mind Of God” the perfect blend of cool and cacophonous." Rotcod Zzaj,Dick Metcalf, editor, Contemporary Fusion ReviewsFebruary 27, 2018   Michael Moss Uses Experimental Jazz To Bring Helix To Life "While there are swing elements and other traditional jazz elements, but the form here is completely experimental. This is jazz of big ideas. And probably not for beginning jazz fans. Still, there is an energy and perceptiveness that keeps audiences listening, and that might be the most important thing of all." "From folk melodies to Renaissance orchestras, to Latin, blues and more, Moss has a nearly encyclopedic array of musical influences. According to Moss, he wants to stretch America’s musical heritage into the future while acknowledging its past innovators such as Louis Armstrong and Scott Joplin. With “Helix” it sounds as though he is doing exactly that." "The album succeeds as an experimental album based on a theme – – listeners with traditional expectations of jazz will be surprised or disappointed. But putting traditional restraints on free-flowing experimental jazz is to miss the point of the form." Dodie Miller-Gould, lemonwire, February 15, 2018   "If Avant Garde, free-form jazz is your preference, you will enjoy listening to the outer limits of Dr. Michael Moss’s artistic creativity. Michael Moss is a 50-year veteran of the New York “free” jazz scene. He’s a multi-instrumentalist and a composer, Chicago-born. At times, this music reminds me of the Chicago Art Ensemble, except that this production features a twenty-two piece orchestra. The Moss production is all over the place, spewing energy and combining instruments and notes in a unique and often dissonant manner."  "I was particularly drawn to the final “SEE SHARP OR BE FLAT” composition that features a provocative violin solo with complimentary string ensemble support. This composition gives more opportunity for individual players to step forward and solo. I found the guitar solo to be outstanding with Warren Smith’s percussion bright and tasty beneath it."  "If you have a taste for a project that’s out-of-the-ordinary, the Accidental Orchestra will soothe your palate." Dee Dee McNeil,February 28, 2018 "It is a work to be heard without prejudices, reminiscent of certain episodes of the music of Anthony Braxton."  "There is everything from the more traditional jazz, with a swing of the rhythm section, to more material and abstract moments like in the long Inception, with instruments like the djembe or the tabla that give a sense of world, or the oboe of Richard Keene, with his nasal sound that stands out on the whole set." "Between moments more free and others more tied to the mainstream Moss demonstrates its music culture and the ability to consistently put together moments inspired by different historical periods." "A great record of this big band." Vittorio Lo Conte, Music Zoom, April, 2018   "The music and albums of this native of Chicago are always distinguished by their originality, and often the use of elements of various ethnic musical cultures."  "In general - an excellent album for advanced fans of jazz music and, probably, quite a complex work for neophytes." Leonid Auskern, Nestor Media, March, 2018   "Sun Ra-ish Swing" "The Accidental Orchestra is comprised of a “Who’s Who” of the New York Improvised Music Scene." "A dissonant, yet strangely colorful and delightful series of chords emerge with a startling intensity." “See Sharp or Be Flat”begins with a shout of joy. It’s a jazz expression of an acceptance of all the good and bad things life throws at us."  “Bridge”swings, walks, and flows like a rich liquid, as if it is urging you to follow its path."  "Moss cultivates an intricate musical garden, then allows it to run wild, knowing quite well the trajectories each living thing will take."  "A master of multiple reed instruments, and compositions . . . Moss knows how to handle himself. His musical inspirations are not limited by genre, culture, or historical period.  To transcend the constant danger of self indulgence and perform music that serves to communicate real ideas and real experiences in service of higher ideals is the sign of a master. Michael Moss and the Accidental Orchestra have accomplished this." Dawoud Kringle,DooBeeDooBeeDoo NY, March, 2018
"MICHAEL MOSS/Helix:  The loft jazz mainstay puts together an Accidental Orchestra, in which the gang is all here, and sets out for places only hinted at in “Metal Machine Music’.  Using Einstein’s name for God as the jumping off point, I’ll bet this how things sound in heaven when Metatron dawdles over a second cup of coffee."

Kathryn Hann y Kevin Bacon en I Love Dick.

Tumblr media
“The All-Star Party for Clint Eastwood”
November 30, 1986 on CBS
Directed by Dick McDonogh
Written & Produced by Paul Keyes
Music by Nelson Riddle
THE PARTY-GOERS
Tumblr media
Clinton Eastwood Jr. (Honoree) is an actor, filmmaker, musician, and political figure. After achieving success in the Western TV series “Rawhide,” he rose to international fame with his role as the Man with No Name in Sergio Leone's Dollars trilogy of spaghetti Westerns during the 1960s, and as antihero cop Harry Callahan in five Dirty Harry films throughout the 1970s and '80s. He has two Oscars for Directing and Producing Unforgiven (1992) and another two for Million Dollar Baby (1994). He received a special Oscar in 1994. At the age of 74, he was the oldest recipient of the Academy Award for Best Director to date. Eastwood won election as the nonpartisan mayor of Carmel-by-the-Sea, California in April 1986. A Mitt Romney supporter, he delivered a prime time address at the 2012 Republican National Convention to an empty chair representing Barack Obama. Eastwood has had personal relationships with a number of women, with partner Sandra Locke famously filing a palimony suit in 1989. He was married twice and also had a relationship with co-star Frances Fisher.

Lucille Ball (Hostess) was born on August 6, 1911 in Jamestown, New York. She began her screen career in 1933 and was known in Hollywood as ‘Queen of the B’s’ due to her many appearances in ‘B’ movies. With Richard Denning, she starred in a radio program titled “My Favorite Husband” which eventually led to the creation of “I Love Lucy,” a television situation comedy in which she co-starred with her real-life husband, Latin bandleader Desi Arnaz. The program was phenomenally successful, allowing the couple to purchase what was once RKO Studios, re-naming it Desilu. When the show ended in 1960 (in an hour-long format known as “The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour”) so did Lucy and Desi’s marriage. In 1962, hoping to keep Desilu financially solvent, Lucy returned to the sitcom format with “The Lucy Show,” which lasted six seasons. She followed that with a similar sitcom “Here’s Lucy” co-starring with her real-life children, Lucie and Desi Jr., as well as Gale Gordon, who had joined the cast of “The Lucy Show” during season two. Before her death in 1989, Lucy made one more attempt at a sitcom with “Life With Lucy,” also with Gordon, which was not a success and was canceled after just 13 episodes.

THE ALL-STAR PARTY
Tumblr media
Monty Hall says that this is the 11th annual Variety Club All-Star Party. The previous year President Ronald Reagan was honored. Two years earlier, Hall hosted the 1984 event honoring Lucille Ball. In 1982 Ball participated in the All-Star Party for Carol Burnett.
Tumblr media
“All-Star Party for Lucille Ball” (1984) also featured Monty Hall, Sammy Davis Jr., James Stewart, Joan Collins, Bea Arthur, Joan Van Ark, and Zsa Zsa Gabor.
Tumblr media
The show was taped on September 28, 1986 on an NBC stage at the network's Burbank headquarters and broadcast by CBS on November 30. Proceeds from the evening were used to expand the existing drug and alcohol center operated by Community Hospital of Monterey Peninsula, near Carmel.
Tumblr media
The broadcast aired opposite “The Wonderful World of Disney” on ABC and sitcoms on NBC. It earned a 21 rating, winning its time period and the night. The highest rated of the “All-Star Parties” was for Frank Sinatra in 1983.
Tumblr media
Hardly anyone in the large audience knew Clint Eastwood personally, as Sondra Locke recalled in her autobiography:
"James Stewart, whom we'd never met, gave a speech; Joan Collins, whom we'd never met, sat very near us. Yet everyone acted like good friends."
Marsha Mason is the first to speak about Clint, talking about their recently finished yet-to-be-released film Heartbreak Ridge.
She introduces Roberta Flack, who performs “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” by Ewan MacColl from the film Play Misty for Me (1971). Flack thanks Eastwood for liking the song and introduces Bob Hope.
Bob Hope: “I won't say he's a tough mayor, but he's got a SWAT team to deal with overtime parking. His motto is 'Walk softly and carry a big percent of the gross.' Now that he's mayor they give the death penalty for jay-walking in Carmel.”
Hope compliments Cary Grant for looking good for his age. Eerily, the day before the party aired, Grant died. CBS paid tribute to Grant with the following statement after the closing credits:
Tumblr media
Hope mentions Eastwood's only musical, Paint Your Wagon (1969). Hope sings his signature tune “Thanks for the Memory” with special lyrics for the occasion.
Tumblr media
Cary Grant reads a letter from President Ronald Reagan. Reagan was honored with an All-Star Party the previous year, 1985. Grant also read a congratulatory telegram from President Reagan in 1984, when Lucille Ball was honored.
Merv Griffin introduces newcomer Jill Hollier who sings “How Much I Care” from Pale Rider (1985) with melody by Clint Eastwood and newly written lyrics for the occasion by Sammy Cahn.
Film Director Don Siegel talks about being assigned to direct his first Eastwood picture.
Tumblr media
Don Rickles takes the stage to 'roast' Eastwood and the other party attendees.
Sammy Davis Jr. says that his relationship with Eastwood goes back to “Rawhide.”  He sings “Misty” by Erroll Garner and Johnny Burke from the film Play Misty for Me (1971).  Davis has written an introduction to the song to be spoken by Clint Eastwood as Dave Garland, his disc jockey character from the film.
Jimmy Stewart calls Clint “a credit to the motion picture industry” as both actor and director.
Jimmy Stewart: “He is an actor who took the art of acting back to basics. He is the common denominator of the common man. You portray a man of the world... you stick up for yourself and all the rest of us.”
Tumblr media
Monty Hall talks about the charitable endeavors of the Variety Clubs International. Lucille Ball takes the stage.
Tumblr media
Ball: “Clint, you're such a big star because you're such a big hunk.”
Ball notes that Clint has filled the room with many of his past production and behind-the-scenes co-workers.
LUCY & CLINT
Tumblr media
In 1972's “Lucy and the Group Encounter” (HL S5;E14) Lucy Carter says that if she were stranded on a desert island she would want Clint Eastwood to be there.
Tumblr media
A year later, when Jackie Coogan played “Lucy's Tenant” (HL S6;E7), Lucy wonders why guys like Clint Eastwood don't rent rooms!
Tumblr media
In 1974, in “Milton Berle is the Life of the Party” (HL S6;E19), Harry says he wouldn't come to one of Lucy's parties even if Clint Eastwood were a guest! Nor would he be swayed by Elizabeth Taylor, Frank Sinatra, or Princess Anne – but he changes his tune when it turns out to be Uncle Miltie.
Tumblr media
In 1960, Clint Eastwood was one of Lucille Ball's first choices to play her romantic lead in the Broadway musical Wildcat. When he (and a few other A-list marquee names) were not available, she settled on Keith Andes (above).
Tumblr media
After Lucille Ball's passing in 1989, Clint Eastwood sent a note of condolences to Gary Morton. The note is recreated in the 2004 book Lucy & Desi: The Real Life Scrapbook of America's Favorite Couple.
Tumblr media
Genealogists say that Lucille Ball and Clint Eastwood are actually related! They are ninth cousins, once removed.
Tumblr media
Six months after playing Lucille Ball in the TV film “Lucy & Desi: Before the Laughter” Frances Fisher started filming the Clint Eastwood film Unforgiven (1992). The two had a personal relationship that produced a daughter in 1993. They are no longer together.
This Date in Lucy History – November 30

"Too Many Crooks" (ILL S3;E9) – November 30, 1952
