i really liked richternette in Castlevania Nocturne, so here’s my interpretation of their descendants in that universe

just like her OoE counterpart, she is a jeweler. She uses her earth bending powers to cut rocks/geodes and bend metals. she sells her items with a promise of bringing people luck and happiness

she loves having cats around, she'll usually let strays into her shop

she has Juste's love of reading, it is her off-work hobby

although she is a non-combatant, she often consults with her ancestors (+Sara Trantoul) to help craft weapon enhancements (think: platinum tip, yellow stone, etc.)

just like her game counterpart, she's very sweet and outgoing

AND like her game counterpart, she makes jewelry so that the girl she has a crush on can smile more

she's the youngest, and doted on by her family

although she might not have taken up vampire hunting like her siblings, years of mastering her craft have made her quite strong. she doesn't look like it, but she will fuck you up a thousand ways

Annette's magic is incorporated in his version of the Grand Cross. Instead of a pillar of fire, like Richter, it is a pillar of fire with its own gravitational pull, tearing up the earth and walls, if they're made stone and/or metal. exactly like his game counterpart

richter: if she is having Symptoms then she will do anything to get warm. doesnt matter how, but the physical sensation of warmth as opposed to cold eases like, psychological distress. although obviously it cant fix stressors its like, a huge theme in the coping mechanisms he uses. she is great at starting fires because of this. inversely, to richter being cold is associated with being unsafe or in danger EXCEPT when bathing or in the rain

annette: she brushes or braids her hair when shes nervous/sad/trying to comfort herself or calm down, thus when shes trying to comfort someone else she will brush or braid their hair

richter And annette: after rondo of blood richter has to deal with the life he knew basically ending after she finally Completed The Belmont Prophecy, resulting in isolation after he was allowed to retire from training (because "what the hell happens now."). annette worries about richter and maria suggests they need to FORCE richter to be happy (annette thinks: thats impossible, but she has a point) and so they drag richter out to join them with life and he realizes that she wasnt talking about the church when she said "the same basic faith drives all people to seek, to come together, to move forward"

The sad thing about Annette and Richter in the show is that even Lenector of all things makes comparatively more sense.

It's vile as fuck, but for what it's worth you can sort of see Hector getting attatched to his abuser due to a combination of his emotional immaturity and Lenore being....superficially nice (?) to him at points, which feeds into his desperate need for affection because something something emotionally stunted man child. The reasoning is still fucking weak and it by no means excuses the actual execution of the ship, but at least there's SOME attempt at internal chemistry

With Annette and Richter it's LITERALLY just "mom dead" and that's it, they already have the hots for each other after what? A single week? They're basically two action figures getting smooched together by the writers

Nah I get what you mean. I actually like in a vacuum the interactions they have in S4 (except for That Line ofc), the problem is that they are too divorced by Lenore's actions in S3 to the point where it feels like I'm being gaslighted. I can tell you that Lenore likes Hector because 1) he's submissive and breedable cute, and 2) he sympathizes with her issues while everyone else around her thinks she's a stupid little girl, and Hector likes Lenore because her superficial fake kindness is still more kindness than he ever got in his life, and even things like Lenore going to him to pester him with her dick jokes can be interpreted by him as her showing some interest in him. Basically, their chemistry in S4 is a very classic mutual "Because You Were Nice To Me". I really do get the intent, I do, it's just the shit inconsistent writing surrounding them and the cowardice of S4 glossing over the vileness of S3 that makes me furious.

Even him being flustered by Lenore playing with his leash in S3E6 has some sort of explanation! She's hot (allegedly), she just gave him a better cell showing that she is intent on keeping her promises, and he's starved for positive human (vampire lol) contact. It's depressing, sure, and Hector's below-hell standards should have been addressed at some point, but it's something. Unhealthy relationships are still relationships.

Annette literally goes from "that Belmont boy was useless as fuck" to blushing around him once he returns. Cecile sure as shit said nothing to make her change her mind. And I still have no idea why Richter would ever crush on her, when Annette has been mildly cordial at best and actively antagonistic at worst - girl really hit out of nastiness his own magic-related trauma button at one point. Hector has the excuse that he was abused and isolated so badly he doesn't even know how to human: what is Richter's excuse for his low standards? This isn't even a toxic relationship! These two aren't even friends at this point!

Annette really should have been her own character. Or at least they should have waited until S2 before building some sort of chemistry. Even Trevor and Sypha, after a rough start in S1, started flirting in S2 and got together in S3! The story of Nocturne's S1 would not have fallen apart without the implied romance! I get that they probably had less episodes than they needed, but learn how to economize!

I already made a post about this, but I wanted to reiterate: Richter/Annette is canon. She's is his girlfriend in the games. The ship name is Richternette.

The best comparison I could think of for NFCV in terms of quality is RWBY. The writing in both just ping-pongs between being decent at its best and atrocious at its worst. In both cases, fans just disregard the baffling creative decisions on display when their favorite ships/characters are being somewhat acknowledged on screen.

And yes, the only thing that was flawlessly executed were the fight scenes (except that in RWBY, the choreography dipped in quality post-volume 4). The other thing that RWBY does better is its music and how each track perfectly fits a fight scene or a certain character, something that NFCV lacked tremendously.

As someone who watched RWBY and liked it until Volume 8... I want to disagree, but I can't.

I mean, sure, RWBY lacks the torture porn and the general mean-spiritedness of NFCV. I would absolutely rather 100% rewatch RWBY from beginning to end because it never made me feel sick like NFCV did. But, uh, we got them all, don't we?

Heroes sitting around in one place waiting for the action to start. Terrible pacing in general, with plenty of wasted time

Complete lack of focus on the protagonists, instead given to all sorts of secondary characters (is Ruby even a character a this point). Seriously, the girls do nearly nothing in most of the finales, just like the Belmonts when Alucard or Isaac are on the case.

World building gone off the shits (to the point that RWBY has to rely on a secondary series to get the gist of it, and even then good luck understanding how Aura works). NFCV can't even keep its vampires straight.

Political themes treated with superficiality that borders on the accidental racism

#girlpower used as a selling point, but the feminism is highly questionable (NFCV is much worse with this, just look at Carmilla and to a lesser extent Lenore, but RWBY has its moments, like killing off women to motivate the male Jaune)

Certain characters going through the ringer for no good reason (poor Oscar and Penny, or Ruby in V9 - again nothing like what Hector goes through, but it gets to a point where it just feels mean)

Characters overcoming trauma with little effort (Yang essentially being told to get over her PTSD after Adam cut off her arm, Alucard and Hector and Richter's traumas oscillating from a season to the next)

Forced ships that conveniently ignore the strife between the characters, molding them into being one the other half of the other (personally I would rather compare Bumblebee to Whispangle from IDW Sonic, but sure, now I can say it's kind of like Richternette too)

JESUS CHRIST WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU (Ruby's suicide treated as a good thing she needed to do because she gets to ✨accept herself✨ ye <3 not quite as bad as "being raped and enslaved is okay if your abuser is a cute woman", but what the hell was that crwby)

That being said, I do have a soft spot for RWBY. Maybe it's because the characters are actually likeable, and the cast isn't made by a bunch of assholes who look down on each other. Or because it has a much more optimistic energy, both in themes and in general aesthetic. Or because it's one of the very few series I've seen where the cynical drunkard's alcoholism is taken very seriously and he has an arc where he heals - hi Qrow, you are what N!Trevor wants to be :)

Anyway. RWBY was ruined by mismanagement and incompetence, as the writers took a direction they weren't good enough to pursue. NFCV is a byproduct of arrogance and spite on top of the mismanagement and incompetence. You can feel the difference, and it's unpleasant.

I love how, back when S1 first dropped, you were like "Yeah it's bad but it's nowhere close to the OG" but now after S2 you're starting to see what I've been saying since then :P

Well we still aren't in the realm of gratuituous torture porn and abuse apologism! It has to count for something! :'D

It's hard for me to rank this season. In many verses it has many issues of the OG: the lack of focus of S3, the rushing to close plot points of S4, the waste of characters of S2. I want to give it some points for at least having some decent ideas, like Tera's arc, but it has another issue unique to it that ruins everything which is that it's both overwhelming and underwhelming at the same time. If S3&4 of the OG had 5 plotlines (Trepha, Alucard, Isaac, Styria, St. Germain) and it already struggled to give equal importance to all of them, this one has 9 (Alucard trying to stop the villains, Richternette's relationship, Maria's corruption arc ft. Juste, Tera's struggle with vampirism, Olrox and Mizrak, Emmanuel, Drolta & Sun Thundercat, Sekhmet/Annette's whole journey in the spirit world, the French Revolution, Edouard and the Night Creatures). Nine! And they all battle for equal dominance, and therefore nothing really matters! As pointless as OG S3 was, I can at least summarize the microplots in some way! Shit happened in those poinless microplots! How do you summarize the main "stopping the bad guys" plot of S2 here? I don't think you can!

But that doesn't really make it worse than OG S3 to me. S3&4 are the unbeatable bottom of the barrel to me, and if Nocturne wants to dig deeper, it better have to have something like Alucard raping 16 yo Maria to match. Now I simply don't know if I want to consider this season better or worse than Nocturne S1, since it technically tried to fix some of that season's mistakes but man did they go with it in the worst way. It may also be worse than OG S2, which may be propped up by the Idiot Plot of Carmilla turning everyone into idiots, but that is still, technically, a plot I can summarize.
