disorganized rini thoughts:

I totally see them as a Marshall/Lily from HIMYM thing where they're obviously endgame in my mind, they just have a lot of learning to do first obviously. the future i headcanon for them (based on season 2) goes thusly:

2021: nini takes jamie's advice and starts a youtube channel. nini's first song on there goes semi viral. it's about reconnecting with oneself and gaining back inner strength. even though it's not about him per se, ricky takes this advice and starts taking baby steps to healing his relationship with his parents, and goes to therapy.

2022: after confronting some of his demons and seeking help, life generally looks to be up and up for ricky. he remembers the one time when someone commented on nini's instagram that they were helped by her music and decides to be (actually) supportive this time with no expectations of anything. He also dabbles more in songwriting, and their first collab drops on Thanksgiving break. He gifts her a song off-camera for reaching 500k subscribers. For the first time in a year they actually think they might be ready, but they know better than to do something half-baked and so they wait.

nini crosses 100M views by August 2024; ricky "no marketable skills" bowen is her informal PR and social media team that stays out of her spotlight. he also collabs and writes songs with her occasionally but prefers to be in the background. After working on themselves a lot more, they try LDR through different colleges. Though tough, they make it work this time. Instead of suffocating each other they soar. No more pedestals, no more gilded cages. Nini signs on with Jamie's record label.

Sometime in 2026, after two years of discussions, introspection, a brief mutually agreed-upon break from their relationship, and experiment, Ricky comes out to his girlfriend as bi. They attend their first Pride event together that year. Nini surpasses 20M subscribers. Fame when young is hard for many reasons but having read of accounts from others who have walked her path before, she has countermeasures in place, a support system ready for her, and weathers the storm with grace.

Sometime in early 2033, Nini uploads a single picture of her in a wedding suit modeled after Momma D's, captioned: "Just married!" The speculation sure goes wild for a few days, but Nini's still proud that the fixations on her personal life never out-trended her actual work. There are weirdos, sure, rumours from people who have nothing better to do, threats from scum of the earth targeting her and her loved ones, but all-in-all, she's proud of the impact her songs have had on lives everywhere. Her heart soars from all the stories that she makes possible, all the lives she's able to touch.

Salazar-Roberts-Bowen might be a bit silly and Nina Bowen might be a bit basic so they don't change names.

The proposal involved a tree house and necklaces. A discussion was had prior to it all and she beat him to the question by a day.

Ricky takes a teaching gig at East High and hates the papparazi, though he finds he has a certain charm in dealing with them. He discovers that loves touring with his wife when he can, as well.

They buy back Ricky's childhood home to put down roots and adopts a boy and a girl.

(this one is gonna be long lmao) THE SCENE WITH RICKY AND NINI, when ricky is walking in you can tell he sighs like he is nervous to talk to her. this is so small but the look on his face and the way he raises one eyebrow when he’s like “you sure?” perfection. he’s so sad that the shows over :((((( he’s found a family with all of these people!! (after re-watching the scene like 10 times you can tell from his sighing when he walks in and the way he keeps looking at her and the little hop that he does before she says “is that it?” that what he’s about say to her is just building up) BOY LET ME TELL YOU AFTER LAST WEEKS EPISODE PEOPLE WERE MAKING PREDICTIONS ABOUT HOW THE “i love you” WOULD HAPPEN and tbh i thought like she would run off stage to get him during breaking free and somehow it would be this small little “i love you” while they stare into each other’s eyes or something but WHAT WE GOT WAS SO MUCH BETTER!!!! 1. nini and ricky singing start of something new

2. gina giving ricky hearteyes while he’s singing (maybe she’ll even interrupt a rini moment after start of something new??)

3. the party

4. we’re gonna have a sad gina (maybe her family is moving away again)

5. we ALSO will have a sad nini (probably because of ricky and gina) singing i think i kinda you know

6. and a sad ricky???!!! maybe he found out about his mom’s new boyfriend???

Some important things we learned in this episode: 1. Ricky and Nini have known and been friends with each other since kindergarten. (also I love how the line “Remember in kindergarten when you’d meet a kid and know nothing about them and then ten seconds later you’re best friends?” made Ricky automatically think about him and Nini since that’s what actually happened with them) 2. Nini was Ricky’s first crush. 3. Nini’s real name is Nina and Ricky is the one who gave her the nickname Nini in kindergarten because he couldn’t pronounce his a’s. 4. Ricky’s real name is Richard and Nini is the one who gave him the nickname Ricky in first grade. 5. Ricky also microwaved Nini’s barbie that year. 6. He took out her lemonade stand doing a wheelie and 7. In fourth grade he ate her science project about moldy bread. (why would you do this Ricky?? lololol) 

I don’t know about you guys but the fact that they’ve known each other practically their entire lives and that they grew up together and have all this history and memories together makes me love them all the more. They are literally the cutest!!

the importance of the ricky and nini one-on-one scene in episode 8

the one-on-one scene was very very very important for the viewers to see and understand the history that ricky and nini have, the connection they share, and the chemistry they have together. 

the scene begins with ricky possibly beginning an attempt to apologize, but nini, understandably, doesn’t respond too kindly.

she’s aware that she did her best to console ricky, and even though he was in a negative mood and returned to her with a rude demeanor, she knew he was just hurting and she told him what she understood would help ricky out. but of course, she was still hurt by his words.

it’s clear that there was a lot of tension built up between the two, and that they need to talk it out.

it’s so so so obvious that there’s so much left unsaid between the two and they needed to clear things up, and let things out. ricky admits that he’s glad to have it out of his system, as he believes stuff has been building up that needed to be said.

but just as the relationship went after the breakup ‘pause’ event, they both clearly seemed to not want to continue with what else they wanted to say and attempted to “move on” in the scene :

the tone that is set in the scene currently is very tense, and viewers are shown a bit of a banter between ricky and nini. they both clearly have different sides to their story, but without fully acknowledging the differences in perspective, and talking all of that out, they end up holding back themselves and instead release a negative connotation against each other.

the scene analysis is continued below the cut:

as we continue to the next part of the scene, we have ricky and nini trying to rehearse, with a lot of heart eyes distributed as they play out the kindergarten moment shared between troy and gabriella.

in this scene we see the true connection that ricky and nini have as they act out troy and gabriella talking about the feelings they had singing together.

as a viewer, we know they still have feelings for each other. and in this moment, it starts resurfacing very evidently the moment ricky interrupts rehearsal, as he starts reminiscing the past moments they actually shared together.

being reminded of actual kindergarten feelings that were felt back then, ricky and nini talk about how ricky gave nini her nickname.

LIKE OMG.

nini’s real name is NINA because he couldn’t pronounce his A’s. AND IT JUST STUCK.

it’s revealed that RICKY AND NINI ARE CHILDHOOD FRIENDS. troy and gabriella talked about how it felt being in kindergarten and becoming best friends with someone, but disney decided to use that aND HAVE RICKY AND NINI BE THE ONES IN THE KINDERGARTEN SITUATION.

LIKE THEY REALLY DID THAT.

they also revealed that ricky is short for RICHARD.

and iT WAS NINI THAT GAVE HIM THAT NICKNAME.

like seriously. the reason behind why each of them got their nicknames was because of each other. and it stuck.

they have history. not just ‘oh we used to date’ history, but actual growing up and despite it being after a spontaneous amount of encounters and mishaps: they became friends.

they both clearly cherish these events as ricky begins reminiscing with nini each of the messy yet memorable times they shared.

but then, ricky messes up.

note how ricky casually said “i love you” even though throughout the series he couldn’t say actually say those three words to her. the other moments ricky brought were all definitely times that ricky and nini found very memorable and they seemed to quite enjoy those times. ricky, as he talks about memorable events, he brings up their breakup moment. this means this is something that he thinks about as something important to him. 

of course, it’s important to both, which is why nini obviously was not happy with what he said.

but the most significant part of this scene was the way he explained the breakup. 

he said that he couldn’t say ‘i love you,’ meaning that he WANTED to say it, but COULDN’T. 

not WOULDN’T. 

those three words were hard for him, but as he starts falling into a more comfortable and familiar atmosphere with nini, the one he can talk to about anything, he finds comfort in admitting the truth, and says the actual three words: i love you. which then reveals that it was what he wanted to say. not just ‘i don’t not love you.’ but those exact three words.

but he just couldn’t do it back then.

we continue to nini playing chords on the piano as she does vocal warm-ups with ricky, and despite the awkwardness of the situation prior, ricky eases the mood by playing around and acting slightly flirty with nini by changing the warm-up word to focus on nini.

ricky was clearly enjoying himself with nini as she tries to focus, but it is shown that she does enjoy his playfulness by her small smiles shes gives.

then ricky gets a text from gina, but nini does not show signs of jealousy during this. she talks about how she feels for gina, and understands how ricky is and how much of a caring person he can be. so when ricky talks about gina’s problems, she listens.

the conversation shifts towards the topic of moving, and nini brings up the performing arts school interest she has.

this is the first time she’s updating ricky about her life, besides anything about ej or the musical.

ricky is a bit surprised, but happy for her. he understands that performing is a big deal for nini, and a performing arts school would mean a lot for her. therefore, the support he gives reflects that.

however, he is a bit sad when nini reveals it’s actually in denver, but he recovers quickly after seeing nini not believing in her talent.

he believes in nini, and he knows her talent well. he tries to boost her confidence by talking about how talented she is. when she denies it, he even tries to prove it as he talks about meeting a talented minnie mouse.

he wants to help nini feel better about the situation and encourages her about her talent being good enough.

it is then revealed to the viewers (and possibly nini) that minnie mouse was ricky’s second crush, indirectly showing that nini was ricky’s first crush.

here, the scene takes another turn.

ricky and nini, from a complicated talk to a reminiscing moment to an awkward stance then to a second trip memory lane, they are reminded of the start of their feelings for each other. 

in this moment, ricky and nini start have their feelings fully resurface once again. and despite an almost-kiss in the past, and nini pulling away, this time nini is the first to lean in. this indicates that she’s ready to re-accept ricky again, as she starts to remember the essence of their relationship.

but sadly, their kiss is interrupted.

as is their entire moment overall.

all ricky and nini need is a chance to be alone and just talk to each other. as ricky’s said before, she’s the one person he can talk to about anything.

they have built trust with one another, and when it was broken the moment they had a pause/break-up, slowly but surely after ricky made the effort to prove himself to nini and eventually joining the drama family, their trust soon was built again.

their connection is clearly strong, and they know and understand each other immensely. but as so much has happened and they haven’t been able to reconnect on a personal level anymore with each other, it’s important for them to be reminded of their prior friendship in the beginning and how it eventually built a path for them to end up together.

once they let things out, whatever was built-up, whatever needed to be said, will all be released, and they can start over.

this scene of them being able to hang out alone, and reminisce helped remind them of the relationship they once had, and can regain if they tried.
