i hope yall know that the replies section has been my morning tabloid these past few days and i have been religiously checking them as soon as i woke up while sipping my cup of coffee

“uh huh,” meirin hummed as she sipped on her coffee, directing a dreamy gaze to a certain akademiya scribe, who had just finished infodumping his latest endeavors at learning yet another new language.

the man stared back, an amused smile tugging on his lips, “how many percent?”

“i got around uh, fifty percent of that,” the woman cleared her throat and threw a sheepish smile at him, “but anyway, the point is, it would be great if you can have someone knowledgeable enough to crosscheck this ancient liyuean pet project of yours?”

al haitham nodded, “correct. perhaps your parents or an older relative—”

“even better, i know a certain someone who should be able to easily solve this predicament,” the girl tapped her chin thoughtfully, her legs lightly swaying under the adhigama dining table.

Ears flicker, a leafy tail stirs.

Kazuha turns away from the fire where he had been meticulously caring for the skewers of grilled fish. Seems like finally his mysterious companion was waking to the world.

The doe blinks and shifts her slim legs a little, her eyes are a bright golden almost glowing. She quickly cranes her neck around, a little alarmed, seemingly trying to process all the strange sights and sounds.

The wandering samurai decides not to do any sudden movements and sits back, turning to her. “Hello, do you feel alright? That was quite a nap.”

She stares at him for a moment, and he can see her cowering back a little, skittish.

“Can you… understand me?” Kazuha asks with immutable calm. “Do you speak common tongue?”    

“Um… yes.” Kazuha blinks surprised at the soft voice that practically echoes in his ears, gentle and clear. “Who are you?” She asks, though there is wariness in her tone.

“My name is Kaedehara Kazuha, I am a wandering samurai. I found you passed out a little far from here. Are you injured? What’s your name?”

“I’m… not sure.”

“You don’t remember?”

“It’s… complicated, confusing. I feel like I’m missing parts of me, memories, names, faces.” She huffs in annoyance, in the way only an animal can. “Where are we?”

“This is Inazuma” He responds. “We’re outside Chinju Forest. But you’re from Liyue, aren’t you?”

“Inazuma?!” She repeats. “I am… I think? Y-Yes! I am Liyueren, that’s… at least what I feel. I am an adeptus but… why can’t I remember my names?”

Sensing her distress Kazuha decides to pull closer a small bundled cloth filled with fruits berries and shrooms he gathered. “Maybe you should take it easy for now. Eat something first, I hope these are ok.”

She noses at the small pile and timidly picks a berry. “Thank you…”

They eat in silence for a while, the sound of the flames crackling, night insects chirping and the wind their only company.

“So, you have no recollection of how you ended up here?”

She shakes her head. “I have… vague memories. From Liyue and… Fontaine?” She frowns.

Well, that was a surprise. “Fontaine?”

“They feel all mixed up together, along with my instincts. I feel there’s something important I’m missing and… also a feeling of belonging.”

Kazuha sits pensive a moment. “As a wandering samurai I have no static place to call my home, wherever my journey takes me, wherever my friends are… as long as I stay true to myself that is where I belong. If you’re missing that…” He parts his gaze to the bonfire, the flames dancing and swaying.

He is intrigued, immensely so, but he also feels drawn to her and sympathizes with her situation. She seems to have a pure aura and a feeling of loyalty and resolve, if she’s lost her memories and her home, he wants to help her.

Perhaps they can get to Ritou and contact Beidou there, she’d know something. She has her ways.

“I’ll help you.” He speaks. “I have friends in Liyue. Perhaps someone will recognize you, you are an illuminated beast after all, tales and legends are common, no?” He reasons.

“P-Probably not about me.” She murmurs shyly, ducking her neck.

“You mentioned before... your names, do you have more than one?”

Her demeanor turns solemn. “Typically… adepti would have many names, some of them we choose, some of them are bestowed upon us, and for us, names have power. You can call for our help or pray to us, we can blend in with the humans and take on different forms. Names make up for our identities.”

He nods. “I see. I understand, here in Inazuma too, family names, clan names, they have prestige. Even a newly forged blade receives a name. They are very important.”

“And yet I can’t remember… it’s like… it’s at the tip of my tongue but I can’t get it out.”

“None of them?”

She closes her eyes, concentrating.

‘My name is ███████… pleased to meet you.’

“No…”

‘I am █████████████! And I will make my master proud!’

“I can’t…”

‘You can just call me-’

“-Crys…”

“Crys?” Kazuha repeats and sees the way she perks up at that.

“Yes! That is the name I go by sometimes, I remember that much!” She exclaims happily.

“In that case.” He places a bandaged hand at his heart. “Nice to meet you Crys, I look forward to helping you regain your names and your memories, and finding out who you truly are.”

The two pairs of boots crunched against the stone pavements leading towards Liyue Harbor’s gates. Coviello reached into their pocket, habitually checking to see if they had their Delusion - yet their fingers brushed against two folded sheets of paper. One, they recognized, but the other....

a friend of mine gave me this for protection, but i don’t think i’ll need it, so i'm giving it to you. stay safe and drop by whenever you're in liyue. i wouldn't be opposed to hire such a capable part-timer. the patrons will miss you. — your ex-boss

the smell of tea wafted in the air. familiar and comforting, like the glittering gold filtering through the vitrage.

meirin sat up on a bed far too big for herself and rubbed her eyes. her muscles ached, and her head felt heavy but also clear at the same time — the clearest it had been for the past few days, in fact.

“how are you feeling, tiánxīn?”

a name sat at the tip of her tongue, and the syllable rolled off her tongue as smooth as warm osmanthus tea sliding down her throat.

“zhongli…? when did you get back?”

she rubbed her eyes sleepily and felt the gloveless hand on her cheek; the wedding ring engraved with the countless manmade lines embodying the countless lifetimes spent together pressing against her skin.

“just yesterday. how are you feeling?”

she tilted her head at the insistence in her husband’s steady voice, and decided to try and humor him a little, lighten the creases in his eyebrows, “like i just woke up from a nightmare. it’s been a rough few days, but i feel a lot better now…”

“good.”

a forehead kiss and an affectionate stroke of thumb on her cheek later, she watched her husband stand up to pour her a glass of water from the bedside table. it was then she noticed the state of the bedroom - every surfaces cleaned and every objects put back neatly, unlike what she remembered last time she—

“wait, what happened to m—?”

“hush, dear. for now, let’s just say it was all a long nightmare,” he sighed wistfully as he handed her the glass of water and a medicine pill, “please, rest your mind and take this for now. i will tell you everything in due time.”

“….. okay,” meirin sipped on her water, and obediently gulped down the capsule, knowing how stubborn he could be sometimes, “…. thank you, still. whatever it was, i know you saved me somehow.”

“it was a collective effort,” zhongli’s eyes soften, molten ambers mirroring the gentle rays of the morning sun, “and there is no need to thank me. though i may be retired, i don’t plan on infringing any contracts i made…. and certainly not our sacred contract.”

the woman averted her eyes shyly, opting to stare at the glassful of water within her hands, receiving an amused chuckle from the ex-archon.

“i’ll fetch you your breakfast. with your favorite osmanthus tea to go with it, perhaps?”

“oh, and tiánxīn?”

“hmmm?”

“i think we should include ‘narwhals’ in the ‘not allowed’ sign.”

“…… ah?”

There was a tense silence between the two. Coviello gulped, not daring to break eye contact.

“You do know if you keep doing this, there will be consequences? That you might get hunted down? You may be able to take on the regular patrons, but you know some of them are out of your league. And the most fearsome of all-”

Coviello blinked when their direct superior stopped speaking, his eyes widening as if he had received some kind of enlightenment.

”....?? Lord Harbinger….?”

"........... Haha, oh, Coviello, you're a genius!"

”I- What? I mean... T-Thank…. you…...?”

Coviello inhaled deeply when the Hydro blade distanced itself from their neck. Heart racing, the cold sweat on their neck sent shivers up their spine. They dared not speak, their eyes staying rooted to the floor, waiting for their fate.

“Continue doing what you're doing.”

”I- Y- What?”

“I’ll also need you to explain just why you’re doing this.”

”Well, I-”

“Shush. Don’t talk. Write it down and burn it later.”

”Pardon? But why-”

✼ー storyline explanation / clarifications:

✼ crys and risu’s theories nailed most of the plot, so give those a read before continuing ;)

✼ ciphers translation: “beware of subjectivity” and “everyone has their own agenda”

✼ childe doesn’t like meirin romantically: reference to chilly (childe/holly)… man almost called her ‘honey’ smh he’s down bad, ‘my dearest witch’, ‘wifey’ (on that note, everyone stan chilly pls and ty)

✼ when childe said ‘i’m not your friend, that’s for sure’ + remember the matching jewelries post? the earring there is red-colored but the one he gives meirin is gold colored —> it’s because i’d like to think despite having agreed to everything, when he saw how distraught she was getting, he felt bad. so it was more of like “we’re not friends. i don’t deserve that title.”. and the gold earring he gave her was actually his attempt at nudging her memories.

✼ as for childe’s agenda, crys’ original theory post nailed it. yup. man just wanted to pick a fight with zhongli because why not, right? a fight with a god sounds fun! :D (also i’d like to think that he’s still keeping a liiiiitle grudge from liyue archon quest, yk? lol)

✼ yes, coviello used god’s remains. ‘mother’ was referring to the mother lode. remember baizhu’s story quest? god’s remains causes memory loss and makes whoever consumes the child lode to obsessively seek out the mother lode eventually, which explains the things you were seeing from her pov - the creepy whispers/voices, paranoia, her not remembering her friends, her odd actions/movements.

✼ coviello’s posts (coviello rambles, tartarin, ??? ships, coviello’s journal) are written from their perspective, so they’re all highly biased and subjective. it’s the unreliable narrator case :D

✼ the flowers childe ‘gave’ meirin were in fact from coviello (in one of the asks, kopi offered to get them mondstadt specialties and they asked for cecilias)

✼ー fun little tidbits about coviello:

✼ they’re somewhat based on ‘coviello’ - a character from commedia dell’arte, which the fatui harbingers are also taking references from.

✼ related to the above, on their introductory post there’s a hidden link on the “ 𝐜” (no it doesn’t link you to the picrew) ; )

✼ they dislike their cryo vision, hence why you barely see them use their cryo vision throughout the story and their preference to use their pyro delusion instead (despite fully knowing it’ll cost them their life) and how they’re particularly wary of cryo wielders (e.g. queen) a shame no one brought in wrio huh

✼ the ‘names’ in their journal:

first line (red color, not bolded): danger. confident to kill when needed

second line (red color, bolded): danger. tread carefully; not confident to kill

third line (orange): suspicious. to watch carefully

fourth line (green): harmless

✼ whenever they answers an ask, they always use the person’s full url handle. yup. no exceptions. deeeefinitely none.
