hi okay. dungeon meshi crazy b au. i think it was @tunkus who encouraged me to type this so. thank u. for indulging me. some of this is up in the air and some of this is subject to change but lets get into it.

major spoilers for the central conceit to dungeon meshi. the anime hasnt gotten there just yet! Have a kohaku to keep you occupied otherwise.

Kaname is the Lord of the dungeon. HiMERU at this point, is a shared pet name between Kaname and our Merumeru. They explore together, Merumeru worked as a canary for a while, and they publish wildly different papers under the same name. A while ago, Kaname got ensnared by the Winged Lion, so hes been ruling down there for a while and Himeru is slowly trying to lure him out and save him.

The original idea was to have Kaname be essentially a post dungeon Mithrun, with Himeru trying to find a solution, but I like the active role better. More Tojo brothers content.

Hiiro is our Falin, eaten and transformed in the dungeon. he and Kaname hang out. Kaname's new pet bird that wants to feed him. Another idea is to have him just be lost down there but i love. Chimiiro. Himeru resurrects Hiiro knowing that he'll most likely be transformed, but does it anyways to lure out Kaname.

Rinne is still a runaway prince, so that makes me hesitiate with the ending. I don't want Rinne to be forced into leadership, but we can see how it goes/if people have ideas for it lmao. Niki 100% still found a 17yr old Rinne on the street but due to being. a Gnome. They were closer to the same maturity (sad. sad) . Rinne and Niki come up with the Dungeon Food idea together, Rinne comes up with the plan to eat food, but it's Niki's experience and talent that make it work. They lost all their money gambling down there, as well. Himeru joins the group Post-Hiiro Incident, but he knew Kohaku beforehand, and help rescue him from his situation. (A living weapon created by the Suou family) Kohaku's reccomendation makes the deal better, as well as Himeru's willingness to leave the surface immediately.

I want it to be Rinhime focused, with both of them trying to figure out exactly what the other wants out of the dungeon. There's a huge bit I have in my head where Rinne mentions he's read Himeru's books and everyone assumes its the horrific bodice rippers Kaname writes, when no. Rinne reads Himeru's dry ass Plant Anatomy books.

The Canaries are a bigger factor earlier, as they were already on the way. Theyre headed by Madara (who knows Oremeru) and Mayoi is part of the group. Tatsumi may be as well but I haven't super thought of the guy.

okay thinking about them was the only thing that got me through work today so i'm gonna just. talk about rinne and hinata (discussion of setsubun and suicide attempts under the cut)

i was rereading night club recently and completely forgot that they mentioned setsubun festival, which i also recently read for a fic idea that i'm gonna be incorporating these ideas into hopefully, and it got me thinking about hinata.

the twins have always been outcasts and hinata makes a note of the fact that nobody ever played with them growing up so they had to make up their own games to play on their own. they are also frequently mistaken for one other which understandably gives hinata at least extreme identity issues, calling him and yuta "deformities" and "mutations" for being twins. it all culminates in the rooftop scene in setsubun where he mentions that even if he gets hurt, yuta will be fine and yuta can continue living on without him, how hinata tried to "disappear" over and over again which...can be interpreted as either suicide attempts or just simply fading into the background to allow yuta to shine.

and then his whole breakdown was filmed and disseminated to the entire student body of yumenosaki. regardless of if he knew or not, i cannot imagine that he wanted something so personal, so private aired to everyone he knows so they can see it. mika makes a comment in night club that afterwards everyone became really protective of 2wink as a whole which...to some extent, just stifled hinata and made it harder for him to talk about his feelings and when he was hurt. i'm mostly speculating here since i haven't read too many 2wink stories but like. would you want everyone you know to see your most vulnerable moments like that?

so then enters rinne, a new guy on the block who has no knowledge of setsubun, of your videotaped suicide attempt, and who your boss is telling you to work with. his unit is focused on not judging people for who they are despite having crafted a villainous mask during the mdm. they hadn't touched 2wink at all and rinne was more than willing to work with hinata on their joint live, giving hinata a nickname even that he loved because it felt like someone was actually trying to be his friend again.

and most importantly, rinne listens to hinata, lets him vent and talk about things that he hasnt been able to because of how everyone else views him. rinne's taken on that mantle of big brother to give hinata a space to just be himself.

and i think this extends to the other new characters too, especially his roommates niki and hiiro. i do think that was a deliberate choice, to put him in a room with two guys who didnt know about setsubun and would just treat him like their other kouhais/classmates. it also helps that niki and hiiro dont judge very easily so they just treat him like a normal kid which he's longed for his entire life.

Hinata asking Rinne about how to be a better big brother when Rinne feels like a pretty awful big brother sure is... a thing I think about often. Like Rinne feels so guilty about leaving Hiiro alone in their village but at the same time he just couldn't stand to be there anymore. It takes a lot to make a kid want to run away from home so the situation must have been worse than what we've seen even from his "I've always been told I'm wrong" speech at the end of the Main Story.

So when Hinata, this kid who looks up to him and has a lot of the same problems he did at that age (the identity issues, the big brother issues, the parent issues and the dead mom issues... you get it) and asks him how he's such a good big brother... he's genuinely not sure how to react. He covers it up pretty quickly and Hinata just brushes it off as not expecting the question which is partially true, but it really makes Rinne reflect on his own relationship with Hiiro. Maybe that's what pushed him to pretend to be drunk and tell Hiiro how proud he is of him and his work. And maybe he can be a big brother (and a big brother figure) he would be proud of.

Do think its funny that Rinne picked ryuseitai to accuse bc arguably ryuseitai is one of the units that cares least about money, theyve done multiple shows as voluntary work just to make children happy(and to gain fans but yk). And while theyve never had much theyve always accepted that and worked for the money they needed. But Rinne was like "these fuckers wanted 4 times the prize money!!?!!"
