Cette phrase, il est difficile de l'écrire et de la penser tant il aura traversé, par ses films et ses paroles, ces sept dernières décennies avec une constante lucidité, une inégalable vivacité d'esprit et sans perdre une once de son génie. Il nous aidait à penser et à voir le cinéma dans son histoire et l'histoire à travers le cinéma, et il faudra chérir ce legs comme un trésor infiniment précieux, avec lequel nous ne cesserons de dialoguer. Quant à ses films, Jean-Pierre Melville avait raison d'affirmer qu'ils deviendront des classiques, c'est déjà le cas d'À bout de souffle, du Mépris ou de Pierrot le fou. Car leur invention et leur insolence n'auront jamais répondu à un simple désir de secouer, de provoquer, et encore moins de correspondre à l'air du temps ou aux modes ; comme chez tous les grands modernes (Picasso, Matisse, Joyce...), son art était au contraire enraciné dans une grande connaissance des anciens. Les hommages vont pleuvoir, tout le monde ira de sa petite phrase, mais l'important est que jamais personne n'ait l'idée de le mettre dans un Panthéon, d'officialiser sa grandeur, lui qui échappa soigneusement à toute gloire, à toute récupération. Lui qui opposait à la règle de la culture l'exception de l'art. Lui qui voulait que l'on grave sur sa tombe cette épitaphe : « Au contraire ». Jean-Luc Godard est mort et nous sommes nombreux à penser que le cinéma et l'humanité sont ce matin plus désarmés qu’hier. » - Les Cahiers du Cinéma (13 septembre 2022)

I loved when Jean-Luc Godard would include song + dance numbers in non-musical films. From 'Pierrot Le Fou' (1968), Anna Karina & Jean-Paul Belmondo. RIP JLG.

It was super confusing to see “RIP JLG” trending and learn it’s because Godard, who was still alive, is now dead. First, because I didn’t know he was still alive.

I claimed Godard as a favorite director early in film school, and have long claimed Breathless as a top-three favorite movie, alongside Modern Times and a rotating third that sometimes includes one Peckinpah work or another.

Pierrot Le Fou was unexpectedly my first exposure, in our freshman year Language of Film class, I believe? Breathless stuck in not long after. Weekend was good fun. There was the little bit of Tarantino stealing his company name from a Godard flick, as a little push, too.

But I think what I loved about Godard films without really analyzing them too much was the absolutely unrepentant permission he took to fuck around with the medium, story structure, sequencing, all of it. I know he wasn’t the first, I am sure he stood on the shoulders of others, but it’s the unapologetic nature of his approach that moved me as an 18-20 year old watching these.

Like, a Woody Allen (spits on ground, bitter and betrayed) would fuck around, but then turn to the camera and make a whole fourth wall monologue out of it.

Godard might’ve been the first director I saw just plain try shit without an explanation.

Or maybe he explained it all in Cahiers du Cinema and I don’t speak French?
