A flock of birds

He swore he saw you sometimes. You had told him when someone dies, they become a small star in the dark sky to give light to the world when it was dark. When you told him this, he rolled his eyes and pushed the comment aside.

Memories of you were constant; anything he’d do brought back a piece of you. The smell of pine brought back memories of a short trip to the woods. You were so happy to get away, smiling ear to ear. The soft neighing of horses reminded him of your devotion your stallion.

Sometimes, the memories faded as he drowned himself in alcohol in fits of sorrow.

He knew you weren’t suffering anymore. The world had been so cruel and unforgiving to you. You were a pure, innocent creature in a corrupt world. 

But, you were the only hope in his life. And you left him behind.

He hoped to be with you soon. He’d thought about cutting his life short to see you again. 

But he didn’t.

He knew how angry and disappointed you’d be in him. So, he stayed in the cruel world for you. He knew his life wouldn’t last long. But, he didn’t care. 

He had nothing to live for anymore.

Soon, he knew, he would see you.

And, he’d be free with you.
