NEW YORK – 10 DECEMBER 2019 – GAME CHANGERS, the 2019 New York Watch auction hosted by PHILLIPS in Association with Bacs & Russo, realized $20,169,875/ CHF19,847,157 / €18,177,091, selling 100% by lot and 100% by value. This auction marks the first time that a US auction has ever seen five watches sell above $1 million. The sale set several world auction records across brands and models, notably for a Rolex GMT-Master, a Rolex Day-Date, a Patek Philippe Reference 1518 in pink gold, and a second series Patek Philippe Reference 2499 in yellow gold. Remarkable results were also seen across many independent watchmaking brands, including records for Urwerk and F.P.Journe, as well as a record price for a Lange 1 in stainless steel. The sale also matched the world record for a Philippe Dufour Simplicity, set last month in Geneva.
Phillips’ GAME CHANGERS Watch Auction Realises $20.2 Million
Aurel Bacs, Phillips’ Senior Consultant, said, “Our third annual New York watch auction, GAME CHANGERS, brought together an extraordinary group of timepieces that were owned by those who have reached unprecedented heights in their field, alongside truly groundbreaking watch models by leading brands. The unprecedented success of tonight’s sale is a testament to the ever-growing community of discerning watch enthusiasts, who responded enthusiastically to the meticulously curated sale of 74 lots. It was an absolute pleasure and privilege to preside over this record-breaking auction.”
Paul Boutros, Phillips’ Head of Watches, Americas, added, “It was an honor to work with such an exceptional group of consignors this season, many of whose iconic watches were sold to benefit charitable organizations. I was humbled to have had the opportunity to meet Jack Nicklaus, the greatest golfer of all time, and Petra Brando Fischer, Marlon Brando’s daughter, who so openly shared such wonderful memories of her father. Witnessing their extraordinary generosity was a game-changing experience. Mr. Nicklaus’ prized Rolex Day-Date realized $1.22 million for the Nicklaus Children’s Health Care Foundation, while Marlon Brando’s Rolex GMT-Master achieved $1.952 million, with a portion of the proceeds benefitting the Brando Fischer Foundation. We were delighted to see a great deal of international participation in the sale, with bidders from over 50 countries enthusiastically raising their paddles, especially for the watches whose proceeds are being donated to such worthy causes.”
  Urwerk’s Atomic Mechanical Control
Leading the auction was Urwerk’s Atomic Mechanical Control, a tour-de-force of modern watchmaking, which realized $2.9 million, setting a new world record for the independent Swiss brand. Offered along with a mechanical wristwatch, Urwerk devoted 10 years of research and development to create this masterful work of art, leading to one of the most important timepieces ever created.
  Patek Philippe “pink-on-pink” reference 1518
Patek Philippe’s exceedingly rare “pink-on-pink” reference 1518 sold for $2.3 million, having been consigned from the family of the original owner, while the Patek Philippe reference 2499 in yellow gold achieved $2,024,000. Its discovery changed established scholarship, with round pushers originally delivered by Patek Philippe, making it one of the most important examples of the reference to ever surface.
Ref. 1803, inside case back further stamped 1800 A fine and culturally significant yellow gold wristwatch with day, date and bracelet, sold to benefit the Nicklaus Children’s Health Care Foundation
Jack Nicklaus’ Rolex Day‐Date Reference 1803 achieved a remarkable $1.22 million, soaring past its low estimate of $100,000. It graced the wrist of Mr. Nicklaus nearly every day since 1967 and was present when he won 12 of his record 18 professional major championship titles. The Day‐Date is Rolex’s most prestigious model and one of the world’s most famous watches. 100% of the sale proceeds from this lot will directly benefit the Nicklaus Children’s Health Care Foundation.
Ref. 1675; inside caseback stamped 1675, II.72 An iconic, historically important, and remarkably well-preserved stainless steel dual-time wristwatch with date
After over 20 minutes of bidding from collectors across 3 continents, underscoring the enduring legacy of the most iconic actor of the 20th century, Marlon Brando’s Rolex GMT-Master reference 1675 sold for $1,952,000. With absolutely superb provenance, it was famously seen on Brando’s wrist in Apocalypse Now and long thought to have been missing.
Additionally, Vacheron Constantin’s unique Overseas Dual Time Prototype sold for $106,250, with proceeds going toward the National Geographic Society; Tag Heuer’s Monaco Piece d’Art was sold to benefit United Way of New York City; proceeds from watches by Richard Mille and Audemars Piguet will benefit One Drop; and Random Act Funding will benefit from the sale of the Urwerk UR-105 CT Iron worn by Robert Downey, Jr. in Avengers: Endgame.

Christian Dior Exposition - Museum of Decorative Arts
Tumblr media
Composed by a selection of more than 300 Haute Couture jewels located in one of the galleries of the Palais du Louvre, this exhibition commemorates the 70th anniversary of the Dior’s house. With a very chronological order, the visit shows us the journey of the designer before becoming an international start and also the evolution of the brand with the designers who have been collaborating with the brand until today.
It seems that Christian Dior was already predestined to work in fashion, as a python said: "Vous vous trouverez sans argent plus femmes vous seront bénéfiques et c'est par elles que vous réussirez". With accountants parents and having studied politics, the economic situation of the creator will coincide with this strange paradox because the internship he will do in 1938 in a fashion workshop will save him from misery. From this moment the creator begins on the world of Haute Couture as an art director for Robert Piguet.
Tumblr media
The close relations with artists such as Picasso, René Guau and Braque, cultivated and enriched his creations. They will also be present at the brand’s inauguration  in 1947. Influences that will be transmitted  by his predecessors, such as John Galliano who elaborates the Shéhérazade reminding us the orientalism of Léon Baskt or Russian ballets being an indicator of modern art. The surrealism  will be also taken into consideration and the links that united Dior with Dali or Jean Cocteau. Among the sources of graphic inspiration there is the harlequin, figure very present in the Cézanne and Picasso’s works.
Their first collection will be enough to revolutionize the world of fashion worldwide by using the style called New Look, redefining the clothing of women in a postwar period. This name will be understood for the first time thanks to the Harper's Bazar editor, whose words were: "Dear Christian your desses have such a NewLook."
Tumblr media
This was the name of the first Dior collection whose main silhouettes were the Corolle and the 8. The first was composed by skirts in corolla while the second used tight skirts. The masterpiece of the New Look collection was the tailleur Bar, emphasizing the woman’ contours and making a reference of the Plaza Athénée bar.
Tumblr media
Influenced also by the national history, the decoration of the sewing workshop Avenue Montaigne transports us to the XVIII’s century with a neoclassical facade in gray Trianon color. A style that leaves the Belle Epoque transporting us to the century of the Lights with a suitable style for their parades. All these elements are carefully respected in the Museum of Decorative Arts, where one of the rooms reminds us of the closet of Marie Antoinette.
Tumblr media
The death of Dior in 1955 gave way to the renaissance of the brand with Yves Saint Laurent who became the brand artistic director at the age of 20. In 1958 the young prince of the haute couture breaks the canons of the famous New Look through his Trapèze cut favoring fluid models and freedom of mouvement. In 1960 she will add leather creations for women, something that will shock the traditional customers. The exhibition ends with the last fashion shows performed by Galliano and Maria Grazia Chiuri, always keeping the innovative spirit of the founder. The originality of each creator is also present during the visit thanks to the decoration, from a white forest that reminds us the floral designs of YSL to a room whose lights covers the walls with a rain of stars

Nothing says “I Love You” at Christmas like a Swiss Watch
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();
Nothing says “I love you” like a luxury Swiss watch. Every man should own at least one very nice watch and in some cases men will actually own three or four. There are various designer names that are considered to distinguishing in the watch industry and while some are more affordable than others the meaning behind a nice watch says a lot. You can’t go wrong with the classics. Below are some of the classic men’s Swiss watches in varying price ranges.
The Classics
Rolex Oyster Perpetual Submariner Unveiled in 1953, the Submariner was the first watch water-resistant to 330 feet. Its combination of unparalleled elegance and spy-friendly versatility appealed to Sean Connery’s James Bond. MSRP $5,175
Omega Speedmaster The first watch to go to the moon (Buzz Aldrin and his Apollo 11 colleagues were wearing them when they touched down on July 20, 1969). Sporty and sturdy, this automatic chronograph is among the most accurate and affordable you can buy. MSRP $3,000
Cartier Santos Designed in 1904 by Louis Cartier himself for Brazilian aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont, this was one of the first wristwatches built specifically for men. The minimalist timepiece, which features only an hour hand, a minute hand, and a dot at twelve o’clock, still sits in the Museum of Modern Art’s design wing. MSRP $995
IWC Portuguese Developed in 1938 in response to Portuguese tradesmen’s request for an oversized watch with precise, pocket-watch movement, this is IWC’s signature model.
