Breetai

The Zentraedi war commander known as Breetai was a clone created by the Tirolians following their discovery of Robotechnology and Protoculture.  Answering to his grand lord Zor, Breetai was made a general and assigned to search out a retrieve the lost flagship known as The SDF-1.  This spaceship had crash landed on earth many years ago and the technology of the ship had been reengineered by the humans to act as their primary planetary defense force.  

Commanding his own force, Breetai ultimately came across earth and this led to the First Robotech War.

Throughout the war, Breetai came to cultivate a begrudging respect for the humans, especially for the ace pilot, Rick Hunter.   Seeing the despotic tyranny of his Zentraedi masters, Breetai eventually switched sides and joined the humans as part of the Robotech Expeditionary Force.  The consummate solider would ultimately sacrifice his life in a valiant effort to take out an Invid Supercarrier.

Actor Eiji Kanie provided the voice of the villain turned hoer in the original Macross anime (with actor Tony Clay voicing the character in the English language dub, Robotech).  Breetai first appeared in the first episode of The Super Dimension Fortress Macross, airing on October 3rd, 1982.

*When a strange energy signature pops up on an island in the South Pacific,Bumblebee and Arcee are sent to investigate,only to find a whole city and a GIANT battle fortress in the center of it that is under attack by a terrorist group with a small military group protecting the island with transforming mecha. After assisting them,Bumblebee and Arcee decide to stay and aid the Robotech Defense Force to protect Macross City and the SDF-1 from an anti-unification group,MECH and even the Decepticons in a war for Robotechnology while trying to figure out the secrets of the SDF-1's origins and where it came from*

Robotech Masters #8 (1986) / Robotech II: The Sentinels #11 (1989)

A huge spacecraft known later as the SDF-1 crash landed on Earth bringing with it the harbinger of a new age: the science of Robotechnology! Fantastic new organic machines powered by the alien substance known as protoculture were fashioned under the newly formed United Earth Government. Then the Zentraedi, giant warrior servants of the race known as the Robotech Masters, attacked Earth bent on recovering the SDF-1. The first Robotech War ended with a human victory, but at a horrible cost in men and machinery.

There have been dozens of comics devoted to the wonderful Robotech anime of which I was a huge fan back in the VHS days. Both of these comics above are in the middle of stories but are easy to understand and follow. I look forward to more of these old books in the future.

@korranews: Avatar was formative for me and a whole generation of scifi & fantasy lovers. You’re a storytelling icon for a lot of people. When you were a kid, what stories did you most love and look up to?

Aaron Ehasz: One question, three answers!

1) Robotech was a big influence because it had such a scale, and the characters evolved over long story arcs. I was also influenced by the world building – for example, the explanation for robotechnology (the ability for these vehicles etc. to transform into giant robots) was that it had been developed to combat an alien race of giants. This resonated and felt so awesome.

2) I also read a lot of mythology growing up, Greek, Norse, and other world mythologies always fascinated me.

3) Finally, I have always loved Caldecott medal and Caldecott honor children’s books – I think the fact that something aimed at a younger audience can have heart and meaning and be delightful at the same time really affected me!

Funimation’s Robotech Blu-Ray Remaster On Pre-Order Now, Starts Streaming This Fall

The popular anime series about towering mechas will soon be landing on Funimation in the United States. Japanese title Robotech is set to stream on the platform this fall, with plenty of massive robotic builds laying in wait.

While no exact date has been assigned to the anime’s arrival yet, what’s known is that Funimation will also be rolling out another offering to keep the fans happy. As we await the arrival of the anime classic, the Robotech Home Entertainment Collector’s Edition (US$249.98) has been made available for pre-order on the streamer.
