Confirmed! T.O.P. and Jo Yu Ri Join Squid Game Season 2

Netflix has made an electrifying announcement for Squid Game Season 2, with two notable additions to the cast: T.O.P, the former member of BIGBANG, and Jo Yu Ri, previously known as a member of the popular group IZ*ONE. T.O.P, whose real name is Choi Seung-hyun, brings his immense talent and charisma to the series, while Jo Yu Ri showcases her versatility as an actress, transitioning from her successful music career to the screen.

Joining these exciting newcomers are six other talented actors, including Park Gyu-young and Lee Jin-uk, both recognized for their standout performances in the Netflix series Sweet Home. A Netflix revelou, em um evento online, os nomes dos atores que vão integrar o elenco da segunda temporada, e alguns deles são muito famosos no mundo do entretenimento coreano. Confira quem são eles e o que esperar de seus personagens:

Choi Seung-hyun, também conhecido como T.O.P., é um dos integrantes do grupo de k-pop Bigbang, que fez muito sucesso na década passada. Ele também tem uma carreira como ator, tendo participado de filmes como Tazza: The Hidden Card e Commitment. Ele vai interpretar um dos jogadores que entram na competição por motivos misteriosos.

Jo Yu-ri é uma cantora e atriz que fez parte do grupo Iz*One, formado pelo reality show Produce 48. Ela também atuou em dramas como Hotel Del Luna e My Unfamiliar Family. Ela vai dar vida a uma jovem que se envolve no jogo por causa de uma dívida familiar.

Park Gyu-young é uma atriz que já trabalhou com o diretor de Round 6, Hwang Dong-hyuk, no filme The Fortress. 2nd Concert: Saturday 20 June

Tonight is the second of the Live from Covent Garden concerts at 7.30pm BST which will be broadcast via the Royal Opera House website from Covent Garden. These are the first live performances at the Royal Opera House since the building closed its doors to the public on 17 March.

Tonight’s concert includes a performance of Albert Schönberg’s reduction of Gustav Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde with tenor David Butt Philip, mezzo-soprano Sarah Connolly and soloists of the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House. Principal dancer of The Royal Ballet Vadim Muntagirov will perform Frederick Ashton’s Dance of the Blessed Spirits. The solo was initially created in 1978 for Anthony Dowell and is a showcase of balance and poise.

3rd Concert: Saturday 27 June

The Royal Opera’s Music Director, Antonio Pappano, joined by soloists of the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House, will join singers from the ROH Jette Parker Young Artists programme with a programme including George Frideric Handel, Gaetano Donizetti, Gioachino Rossini, Giuseppe Verdi, George Gershwin and more.

First Soloists of The Royal Ballet Fumi Kaneko and Reece Clarke will perform the lyrical central pas de deux from Kenneth MacMillan’s Concerto. Created in 1966, Concerto is set to Shostakovich’s Piano Concerto no.2 in F. MacMillan was inspired to choreograph the concerto’s slow movement after observing Royal Ballet dancer Lynn Seymour warming up at the barre, resulting in a deeply romantic and atmospheric pas de deux. This will be the first time that Kaneko and Clarke have performed this duet together. Royal Ballet pianist Kate Shipway together with soloists of the Orchestra of the Royal Opera will accompany the dancers.

Principal Matthew Ball and First Soloist Mayara Magri will perform a pas de deux from Royal Ballet Artistic Associate Christopher Wheeldon’s Within the Golden Hour. First created for San Francisco Ballet, Within the Golden Hour has been part of The Royal Ballet’s repertory since 2016 and was last performed by the Company as part of the 2018/19 Season. Music Director of The Royal Ballet Koen Kessels conducts.

Friday Premiere series of free online broadcasts

ROH also presents the next in the Friday Premiere series of free online broadcasts, with Wayne McGregor’s Woolf Works on Friday 26 June at 7pm BST. Guest Artist Alessandra Ferri returned to The Royal Ballet in 2015 to create the role of Woolf, for which she was awarded the Critics’ Circle National Dance Award for Best Female Dancer, as well as an Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement in Dance. The ballet also features Sarah Lamb, Natalia Osipova, Akane Takada, Beatriz Stix-Brunell, Francesca Hayward, Federico Bonelli, Steven McRae, Edward Watson, Gary Avis, Tristan Dyer and Paul Kay. The Orchestra of the Royal Opera House is conducted by Music Director of The Royal Ballet Koen Kessels.

Best foot forward: The history of The Royal Ballet

Based in London’s Covent Garden, The Royal Ballet is one of the world’s most famous ballet companies, with a fascinating history.

They say it’s only rarely that life imitates art, but so it was on 20 February 1946. As Margot Fonteyn’s Sleeping Beauty awoke from slumber on the stage of the Royal Opera House, so too did the building itself, reborn after its wartime stint as a big-band dance hall. Night after night for the next 19 weeks its grand auditorium was packed once more, as crowds thronged to see the best that British ballet could offer. 

It’s hard to believe that just two decades earlier, Britain had no professional ballet company. In fact, it had no tradition of classical ballet at all; for centuries, ballet had been the preserve of foreign guest-stars from Russia and France. One woman changed that: Ninette de Valois built Britain a national ballet company from scratch, and in the process put ballet right at the heart of the nation’s culture.

Born Edris Stannus in Ireland, de Valois’ own dancing career began young, and eventually led her to the legendary Ballets Russes. Taught by Russian and French émigrés, she dreamed of nurturing home-grown talent, and in 1926 she opened her own school. After entering into a partnership with the manager of London’s Old Vic theatre, she soon had her own ballet company, too. Since the six dancers also performed at the Vic’s sister site, the Sadler’s Wells theatre, they became known as the Vic-Wells Ballet, and later, the Sadler’s Wells.

The fledgling company had a distinctive style from the start. De Valois boldly staged full-length versions of the Russian classics for the first time on the British stage: Giselle, The Nutcracker, Swan Lake and The Sleeping Beauty. It’s thanks to her that these favourites became the cornerstone of the ballet repertoire. But her company produced innovative new works, too (many choreographed by the acclaimed Frederick Ashton), and created its own British-born stars, notably Fonteyn who joined de Valois’ school as the rather less glamorous Margaret Hookham in 1933.

It was their wartime experiences, however, that saw the Sadler’s Wells leap from pioneering start-up to national treasure. After the outbreak of war in 1939, the Government agreed that they could keep dancing in a morale-boosting capacity, touring the provinces and undertaking propaganda tours. At times, it was a mission that put de Valois’ young dancers in considerable danger. 

In May 1940, they were staying in The Hague when Hitler invaded the Netherlands. The company could only watch in horror from their hotel as German soldiers parachuted into the streets and Nazi propaganda leaflets rained down from the sky. It was four days before they were smuggled out of the country in the dirty hold of a cargo ship, abandoning costumes, scenery and any personal belongings they couldn’t carry. Astonishingly, British officials admitted that the invasion was expected, but they hadn’t cancelled the tour for fear of compromising their military intelligence.
