your heart swells, and you smile as you look up at him. sliding your glass back and hand from under his, you respond by tapping four times on ross's finger - i love you too - before bringing the glass up to your lips and letting the amber liquid roll down your throat. it kind of makes you feel the same way ross does, actually; warm, cosy, content. "this is nice."

"it is," ross agrees, and you know he's also referencing both the moment and the drink like you are. his brow furrows slightly, and he brings his free hand up to your face. "you've got a little…"

with his thumb, he wipes a stray drop of whisky from the side of your mouth, then boldly drags it across your lips before bringing it to his own and smirking.

"ross," you glance around quickly to make sure you're not being watched, before scootching closer to your boyfriend. "what was that?!"

"irresistible, love," ross winks. "waste not, want not, and all."

you laugh, which seems to remind george and charli of your existence. they move to stand between the two of you, george's arm resting on his best friend's shoulder and charli's slung around your own. she lightly pokes your cheek. "what are you giggling at?"

"how tipsy ross is. i think he needs his bed."

the two of them cackle again, while ross smiles warmly at you. "you're right, actually. would love to be in bed right now."

"actually," george turns to his girlfriend. "i'm ready to go home, too, i think."

"yeah, this party's a bit dead, anyway," charli shrugs.

you scoff. "course it is. it's a soho house."

everyone laughs, and george reaches around charli to clap you on the back. "see, this is why we all love you - you tell it like it is. take it you're heading out with us, then?"

"if that's alright, yeah," you nod, sipping your drink.

"absolutely," charli squeezes you. "where are you staying tonight?"

you name the area, pointedly not looking at your boyfriend. george is the one to note the familiarity, but he still doesn't cotton on. "oh, like ross. well that works perfectly, then - we'll get out first, and then the two of you can share the taxi for the rest of the journey. cool?"

ross nods. "cool. shall we?"

you down the rest of your whisky, and he snorts. "let me run and say goodbye to the girls - i'll get you at the door."

"i'll come with you, actually," ross chips in. "matty'll kill me if i don't pass on the message that he loves the new album to the four of you."

"as he should," charli says. "we'll get you outside."

you nod, and the two couples part ways. with a "fucking finally", ross takes your hand, and you lead him towards your - visibly tipsy - friends. the feeling of your hand in his spurs you on, and you barely manage to shout a "bye, girlies!" to your bandmates before you're tugging ross towards the door. before you reach it, though, he suddenly grabs your waist and pulls you into a darkened alcove; his lips are on yours immediately, and you moan at the feeling.

despite your public setting, you wish the kiss lasted longer; ross pulls away after only a couple of seconds, before you can open your mouth and instigate a full make-out session. you whine almost involuntarily as he does, which makes him chuckle.

"m'sorry, baby," ross says, kissing your forehead before pulling you back into the party. "i just couldn't hold it in any longer. was gasping for that the whole night, honestly."

"me too," you smile, weaving your way back through the crowds - ross has to hold your hips to stay close to you, which of course you don't complain about. "can't wait for more when we get home."

"same," a final squeeze of your body, then ross lets you go as you step outside. "oh, there they are."

your timing couldn't have been any better - you and ross reach charli and george just as the cab does. ross ends up sitting next to you after you've all clambered in, and he rests his head on your shoulder in what you hope is only fake tiredness as charli directs the driver and the car sets off.

george squints at you and ross. "you know, you two would actually be a really good couple."

"really?" ross cracks an eye open to stare at his bandmate in amusement.

"oh, you so would! i mean, you look great together," charli agrees. "like, that's an onlyfans channel i'd subscribe to right there."

ross turns his face into your shoulder to cringe, while george shakes his head and you laugh in slight disbelief. "thanks?"

as soon as your friends disappear from view, ross presses a little kiss to your neck and rests his hand on your thigh; he traces the little hearts on your tights quite happily, smiling into your skin as you tell the driver you're happy for the next drop-off point to be the final one.

you slide your arm behind ross's neck, reaching up and round to stroke the side of his face. "do you want to shower when we get in? or just a brew then bed?"

"i don't mind. i get to hug you either way," ross murmurs, softly kissing your jaw.

Coney Island is quite possibly one of Steve Rogers’ favorite places on Earth. This is pretty common knowledge, you’re sure, especially among the team. He doesn’t go very often, being a pretty busy guy, but when he does, he spends the whole day there to get in as many rides and attractions as possible. You were well aware of Steve’s love of Coney Island long before you started dating, so it doesn’t come as a surprise when he invites you on a day trip to the boardwalk with him. There’s just one problem, though.

You have a fear of heights.

You probably should have just told Steve from the start, you’ll realize later. The morning is spent in Luna Park and the afternoon in Deno. You manage to bow out of the bigger roller coasters, claiming motion sickness - which isn’t a lie. That last spinning ride kicked your ass. You don’t mind waiting for him to ride them, though. He’s having such a good time as he leads you around the parks, telling you stories from his childhood and pointing out things that have somehow survived the decades. His energy is contagious.

“Are you sure you’re having a good time?” Steve asks for the third or fourth time as he meets you by the exit of his latest ride.

“I’m sure,” you tell him, looping your arm through his. “Really. I like just spending time with you, Steve, and I love seeing you happy. Are you having a good time?”

“I am.” He gives your arm a squeeze, flashing a blinding smile in your direction as he leads you to the next ride. “We should probably head back to the Tower soon but I think we have one more ride. This one shouldn’t bother your stomach.”

“What do you have in mind?”

Steve points and your stomach sinks.

“You’re sure?” You do your best to keep the fear out of your voice.

“It’s a classic!” Steve is practically bouncing as you join the line for the Wonder Wheel. “It opened two years after I was born, so it’s almost as old as me.”

You eye the massive structure and, before you can think about what a bad idea the question is, find yourself asking, “How tall is it?”

“150 feet,” Steve answers without hesitation and you sway, a little dizzy at the thought. “The view from the top is incredible.”

It’s growing dark but the lights on the wheel make sure you can see the swinging cars as they shift with the motion of the wheel. Your stomach knots at the thought of being in one of those cars. “We’re going on the stationary side, right?”

Steve loops his arm around your shoulders and squeezes you tight. “Of course. How’s your stomach feeling?”

“Better,” you say even as your stomach twists itself into knots. You can see the cars from here and, thankfully, they’re completely enclosed, so you at least know you can’t just fall out. That’s definitely better than the ferris wheels you’ve seen in movies, with the open seats and single lap bar.

It’s the perfect time of year to be at the park. The lines are shorter than you expected, especially as it gets closer to closing time. The downside of this is that you’re climbing into the car beside Steve far sooner than you would like. As soon as the door is locked behind you, your heart starts racing.

You force yourself to take slow breaths as the ride begins to move. The two of you have the car to yourself, which you’re grateful for as your panic grows with each stop of the ride to let another group of passengers on. Steve has his arm thrown casually across the back of the bench and is pointing things out with his other hand, a welcome distraction but one you know won’t last for long.

You really should have mentioned something to him before now.

Above you, a pair of girls in a swinging car squeal as their car slides along a section of the track that lines the inside of the wheel. Steve chuckles and pulls you closer against his side. His solid warmth is soothing and you definitely feel more secure with his arm around you. The car is moving backwards, so you can’t see much beyond the framework of the wheel unless you turn around.

“Think we can see Avengers Tower from the top?” Steve is asking.

You manage a shrug, staring straight ahead at the swinging car where the girls are screaming again. You’re already halfway up the wheel and already it feels too high. Your chest is tight, your heart pounding so hard you’re sure Steve must be able to feel it where his arm rests against your upper back.

Sure enough, Steve turns a concerned frown to you. “Y/N? Are you okay?”

You open your mouth to say yes but the words won’t come out, your lungs unable to draw the air to form them. You feel dizzy and when you shake your head, the movement sends a wave of nausea through you.

Steve turns to face you and brings his hand around to cup your cheek, pulling your eyes to his. “Hey. Hey. Look at me. You need to breathe.”

Your eyes are watering, tears threatening to spill over, and you manage another shake of your head.

“You can do it. C’mon, with me. Can you copy me? In.” Steve draws a big breath. “Out.” He lets it go in a woosh. You manage a small inhale and exhale along with him. “Good, good. You’re doing so good. Again. In.” In. “Out.” Out.

You don’t know how long Steve keeps this up for, his hand on your cheek preventing you from looking anywhere but right into those steady blue eyes. His voice is low and soothing, and his other hand rubs circles on your upper back as your breathing slowly evens out. You still feel nauseous but the dizziness has faded and your heart doesn’t feel like it’s going to burst out of your chest anymore.

“We’re at the bottom again,” Steve finally says and you yank free of his grip, scrambling for the door. The worker who opens it tries to ask if you’re okay but you’re already out the exit, Steve hot on your heels. He catches you hunched over the nearest trash can, body jerking as you try not to lose your dinner. “Y/N, hey. Easy.” When you do manage to straighten up, you find a concerned worker handing Steve a foam cup of water, which he offers to you.

“Thanks,” you murmur, leaning on Steve as you sip the water. It’s ice cold and absolutely perfect.

“Are you okay?” Steve asks, pulling you towards a bench to sit. “What happened?”

Your cheeks burn even as you let him surround you with his warm embrace. He smells like aftershave, leather, and a bit like sweat. It’s soothing and as you draw in deep breaths, you know you need to tell him the truth.

“I have acrophobia,” you murmur, for his ears only.

“The fear of heights?” One huge hand curls around the back of your head, fingertips scratching gently at your scalp. “Why didn’t you tell me?”

You can’t look him in the eye as you shrug. “You were so excited. I just… I wanted you to have a good day. I thought I’d be okay.”

“Y/N.” Steve presses a kiss to your temple. “Just being with you makes any day a good day. You don’t need to pretend to like something just because I do.”

“You were having such a good time…”

“Because I’m with you.” He puts a hand under your chin, lifting your eyes to his. “Because I like you exactly the way you are, as a unique person with wants and loves and fears. It’s okay to not enjoy something I like, especially if you’re afraid.” He kisses you softly. “Are you feeling better?”

“Yeah,” you answer honestly.

“Good.” He tosses your empty cup in the trash can and pulls you to you free. “C’mon. I’m going to win you one of those giant teddy bears before we go.”
