A myelogram is a diagnostic tool used to determine cord compression in the potential surgical candidate. Even when the horse shows obvious compression on standing films, the myelogram is needed to show if there is more than one level of compression. Cord compression is determined by measuring the dorsal and ventral dye column in both neutral and flexed positions. Ratio measurements are made by using a special software program on each digital radiograph taken during the myelogram.

Posted @withregram • @roodandriddle It’s that time of the year again!! Foals are arriving, and it’s very exciting, but also we need to be prepared. Saratoga ambulatory doctor Patricia Flores Ahlschwede talks about the importance of examining the placenta after foaling. The placenta is a very important part of foaling; it can give us a lot of information. Typically, mares will drop the placenta within 3 hours after foaling. When we examine it, it’s critical to know the basic anatomy so we can identify any further problems. The placenta should have 2 horns, a body, an umbilical cord, and a cervical star. There is also a hippomane. Something that always helps if you are not sure of the structures is to find only one opening (cervical star). If you find 2 openings, then something is missing. First photo: normal placenta Second photo: In this picture, we can see “two openings, “ one by the body and another one by the non-pregnant horn; there is a missing piece. Photo number 3: Luckily we were able to retrieve the piece from the mare. Picture 4: The hippomane is another normal structure of the placenta. Normally comes out during foaling, but sometimes can be found inside the mare. Often it passes unnoticed. The hippomane can vary in appearance and size, but it always has a rubbery tan (sometimes light to dark) look. Picture 5 The remnant of the yolk sac is another interesting finding. It can be easily mistaken for a twin because of the bony consistency (ossification). Picture 6 Always remember to check the inside of the placenta, the chorionic surface (velvety part). Sometimes placentitis (infection) can be seen. Picture 7 Make the placenta exam a part of your routine with your veterinarian; this can save your mare and foal from serious complications.
