Road trips in Juicy Lucy with Brett Beardslee are my favorite and always instill a deep sense of freedom and peace and joy. I’m Jesse Junko Beardslee and I love van livin! I also love sustainable style and female empowerment and truth seeking and mostly post about that here but one of the (tiny air cooled) engines that moves those passions through me is travel. My husband and I do it different. We do it slow, we go to remote places, we dally, we’re horrible planners, we get lost, sometimes we break down, sometimes we get ourselves into trouble but we do it our way. Juicy Lucy is our best mechanical friend and she was born in 1958! She’s a part of the family and she’s in serious need of serious work. We’ll address it, hopefully we’ll find just the right guy and all the money he needs for the vital rust work, BUT we wanted to take her out on one last spin before the cool winds blow her into a garage. Tiny bouquets, tiny stoves, tiny closets, big hearts, big skies, big dreams. It’s the best. Music by a campfire, tracking our mileage, spreading out and packing up, it’s what my soul needs. There are many more pictures I took of our mini road trip but two of the coolest things you won’t see in any of them are the bio luminescence we saw blinking on the ground in the middle of the night - mirroring the stars above… And the adolescent black bear we paced, unaware, contently coexisting, oblivious to our gentle excited observation. 506 miles roundtrip. Mil-9 Wall Tyvek, Sherwin Williams Federal Standard 14062 latex exterior house paint, wheatpaste, thread, grommets, zip ties, soil, mining detritus, and other fill 39 x 30 x 150 inches Mil-9 Wall is a wall made of 5 Tyvek bags filled with dirt, rocks, and other materials excavated from the site of a collapsed limestone kiln. The bags are modeled after Hesco Bastion Mil-9 Concertainer units, a brand of gabion defensive barriers manufactured by Hesco. Hesco barriers are used by militaries to quickly fortify forward operating positions like encampments and airfields. They are fabric-lined wire baskets filled with dirt, and are effective shields against bombs and bullets. Gabion fortifications are a simple tactical military architecture that transforms labor into freestanding structures without importing many materials: troops fill a frame with dense matter like dirt and rocks. Gabion construction is also a popular approach for DIY outdoor home projects. The materials used in Mil-9 Wall are waste from a derelict cement-production operation that in its heyday enabled the construction of much New York architecture. Mil-9 Wall is also a printmaking project; the Tyvek bags are painted with a water-soluble paint/wheatpaste substance that will weather over the next few months, retaining an impression of the materials they contain. Juicy’s a 1958 Volkswagen Panel Van and she’s part of the fam! My husband and I camp in her extensively and love having everything we need in her cute lil metal body! Brett has been doing all her work (short of engine block rebuilds) for 25 years and has put about a million miles on her!
