The majority of clothing being manufactured today wasn’t made for anybody but rather an unrealistic ideal and is made to be worn a few times and replaced. Keeping prices low and new styles churning out has created a monster. And it’s hurting our planet, our businesses and our spirits. The ever shortening lifecycle of clothing reflects that culturally we value physical beauty but not the people who create the beautiful items. Now I know YOU care deeply and that YOU ARE DIFFERENT. But the truth is fashion is an unregulated industry and it can be hard to identify, find and afford #qualityFashion items. Make a #FashionStatement and use these guidelines to find quality products. Research clothing brands before you shop with them - the Good Buy App is a great resource where you can search brand ratings and find why they’re rated the way they’re rated. Check return policies when shopping online and search the website for their “about” info, manufacturers country of origin info and look to see if they have any sustainability policies. Shop with reputable brands you know and trust. Shop in person vs online so you can touch and feel the fabric and check the seams. Actually look inside the garment to see if it looks like it is well constructed and the seams are stable. You can gently press the seams apart and if you see threads stressed you’ll most likely tear a seam when you wear it. Check zippers before you buy! Cheap zippers are the bane of my existence as a #SustainableStylist! A garment made with inferior components is useless, and that goes for the fabric. Check the tag for fiber content (Natural fibers like cotton, linen and silk are durable and have smaller carbon footprints than poly blends which deposit microplastics into the water system every time you wash.) Check if you can see through the fabric by holding it up to the light (not all fabrics are supposed to be heavy or thick, but you don’t want something to stretch apart into nothing after the first time you wear it.) Today I had the pleasure of speaking at @theithacahighschool for their #SocialJusticeWeek. I talked about #sustainability, #fastfashion, emotional/environmental and ethical issues and #FashionRevolution. I love seeing the good that has come from the awareness of such a harrowing tragedy but I will never forget that on April 24th 2013 1,138 people were killed and over 2,000 were injured in the world’s deadliest garment factory accident when the Rana Plaza factory collapsed in #DhakaBangladesh. I had some really incredible shopping experiences in Puerto Rico. I met a couple local designers and bought a maxi dress from the woman who designed it and also splits her time between Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic working with sex trafficking victims. I met a couple shopkeepers who offered great product lines and bought crystals from a young woman who had the coolest beachside shop environment. As a designer and a shopkeeper myself it felt so exciting to experience and support these people and places. Doing it with my bestie who I co-own @hectorhandmade with made it all the sweeter. Especially in tourist areas shopkeepers and the products they offer make a huge impact on people; The stories, intentions and quality reflect on the culture (whether they like it or not and whether it’s “good or bad”!) I’m not toned and trim, I don’t have a smooth hairless body, I‘m not in love with my skin color, but I wore a bikini in Puerto Rico last week on the beach and celebrated life. My chaffed thighs and bikini bumps and cellulite saw the sun and I ate meat on a stick and drank fancy cocktails without worrying about calories or what other people thought. If any of this makes you cringe, thinking “Good for you, but no way could I possibly…” here’s the secret —it’s HARD and it takes a lot of WORK. Not hard work to “not care” or to manipulate my body into a configuration “I can deal with”, it takes a lot of hard work looking at myself and accepting myself and retraining my brain. What I have learned can be applied to anyone anywhere who has the courage to face and embrace themselves. Stop sidelining yourself. Stop missing out. Stop limiting yourself. For #WomensHistoryMonth I’ve been showcasing incredible women who exhibit rising feminine leadership and the powerful messages that drive them to shine. We have been sharing incredible women who exhibit rising feminine leadership and the powerful messages that drive them to shine for Women’s History Month this past week and I’m stoked to introduce you to Stephanie Satchouk. As a sister slow fashion movement change maker she’s a gal after my own heart! Stephanie owns Recycle Bridal Boutique, a second hand bridal shop in San Ramon, California which was voted Best Bridal Shop in the East Bay in 2022! She says “Everything in my shop has been bought second hand - even the furniture! I take dresses back from my happily married brides, and consign them, so they have yet another lifecycle of re-use. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if the demand for new goods dropped significantly? We can get there… and then companies would produce less, meaning less toxic water, dyes and chemicals ending up in our waterways, soil and air! I do everything I can to reduce, reuse, and recycle. For example, in my shop, I reuse shipping materials when mailing a dress. I use my dress tags twice/on both sides before they go into the recycling bin. I serve water from a pitcher, in washable glasses instead of individual waters in plastic bottles. I reuse garment bags when the bride takes her dress home. I don’t print receipts; I email them. Today I’m shining the spotlight on an incredible human, my best friend Jennie Scarbrough —whose birthday just happens to be today 🎉 Jennie is an ever changing multidisciplinary artist and entrepreneur. For the past 6 years she and I have co-created the Finger Lakes New York Gift Shop and Gallery, @HectorHandmade where we’re cooking up some merging and emerging dreamscapes steeped in feminine creativity.
