Settling In
The first month of my LLM journey was so busy and eventful that until now I’ve hardly had time to reflect on it. Adjusting to my new life as LSE student has been a little overwhelming, but very exciting: registering for the program, choosing modules, meeting fellow students from all over the world during welcome events and many more.
Prior to my arrival in London, I had doubts as to whether it’s a good place for a student as opposed to small university towns with slower life pace. But despite being situated in the city centre, right next to the Royal Courts of Justice, LSE campus has a very peaceful vibe which makes you forget that you are in one of the busiest world capitals. Plus, I feel very lucky to be living in a student hall within 5 minutes walking distance from LSE, and also very close to Covent Garden and the theatre district.
Tumblr media
Due to the fact that the LLM program is very international, with students from different backgrounds, during the welcome week we had introductory lectures about the English legal system and EU law. Also, I found very helpful postgraduate law option fairs that were designed to help students decide which modules to choose for the year ahead. In essence, each professor did a short presentation of his/her module(s), and after that took questions from the audience.
At LSE you are expected to complete a total of eight courses, one of which is compulsory for everyone - Legal Research and Writing Skills. The latter will be assessed by a master dissertation to be submitted by the end of summer. What I found peculiar is that you can write your dissertation on any legal topic irrespective of your chosen modules. However, if you wish to focus on a particular area of law and have a specialism to your LLM, your dissertation topic has to fall within it.
Tumblr media
Also, each student on the LLM is assigned an academic mentor from the law department who you can turn to for advice. Basically, your mentor keeps track of your academic performance and general wellbeing throughout your time at LSE and regularly contacts you to arrange meetings. Interestingly, your mentor is often specialised in a different area of law than the one you choose to specialise in at LSE, however, it doesn't preclude them from giving you valuable advice on course choice and other aspects of your academic life.
Tumblr media
One of the highlights of my first weeks at LSE was a welcome reception at the Law Society on Chancery Lane - home to professional body of solicitors in England and Wales. Despite the fancy setting, it was a great opportunity to socialise with law department professors in a rather informal way and commemorate the start of this exciting new life as LLM students at LSE.
Coming from an education system where the relationship between students and their professors is supposed to be very formal, I find it helpful to be able to approach your teachers and talk to them outside classroom.
Tumblr media
The weather in London is infamously gloomy (mostly) this time of the year, which makes it easier to stay in the library and study for long periods of time without being distracted. But if you do get tired, there is always the option of lying on the beanbag beach :)

Danny Glover
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Danny Lebern Glover (born July 22, 1946) is an American actor, film director, and political activist.
Glover is well known for his leading role as Roger Murtaugh in the Lethal Weapon film series, The Color Purple (1985), To Sleep with Anger (1990) and Angels in the Outfield (1994). He also has prominent supporting roles in Silverado (1985), Witness (1985), Predator 2 (1990), Saw (2004),Shooter (2007), 2012 (2009), Death at a Funeral (2010), Beyond the Lights (2014) and Dirty Grandpa(2016). He has appeared in many other movies, television shows and theatrical productions, and is an active supporter of various humanitarian and political causes.
Early life
Glover was born in San Francisco, California, the son of Carrie (Hunley) and James Glover. His parents, postal workers, were active in the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), working to advance equal rights. Glover's mother, daughter of a midwife, was born in Louisville, Georgia and graduated from Paine College in Augusta, Georgia.
Glover attended George Washington High School in San Francisco. He attended San Francisco State University (SFSU) in the late 1960s but did not graduate. SFSU later awarded him an honorary degree. Glover trained at the Black Actors' Workshop of the American Conservatory Theater.
As an adolescent and a young adult, Glover suffered from epilepsy but has not suffered a seizure since age 35.
Career
Glover originally worked in city administration working on community development before transitioning to theater. He has said:
I didn't think it was a difficult transition. Acting is a platform that can become a conveyer for ideas. Art is a way of understanding, of confronting issues and confronting your own feelings—all within that realm of the capacity it represents. It may have been a leap of faith for me, given not only my learning disability (dyslexia) but also the fact that I felt awkward. I felt all the things that someone that's 6'3" or 6'4" feels and with my own diminished expectations of who I could be [and] would feel. Whether it's art, acting or theater that I've devoted myself to I put more passion and more energy into it.
His first theater involvement was with Conservatory Theater, a regional training program in San Francisco. Glover also trained with Jean Shelton at the Shelton Actors Lab in San Francisco. In an interview on Inside the Actors Studio, Glover credited Jean Shelton for much of his development as an actor. Deciding that he wanted to be an actor, Glover resigned from his city administration job and soon began his career as a stage actor. Glover then moved to Los Angeles for more opportunities in acting, where he would later go on to co-found the Robey Theatre Company with actor Ben Guillory in honor of the actor and concert singer Paul Robeson in Los Angeles in 1994.
Glover has had a variety of film, stage, and television roles, and is best known for playing Los Angeles police Sergeant Roger Murtaugh in the Lethal Weapon series of action films, starring alongside Mel Gibson and Gary Busey . Later he once again starred with Busey in the blockbuster Predator 2. He also starred as the husband to Whoopi Goldberg's character Celie in the celebrated literary adaptation The Color Purple, and as Lieutenant James McFee in the film Witness. In 1994 he made his directorial debut with the Showtime channel short film Override.
Also in 1994, Glover and actor Ben Guillory formed the Robey Theatre Company in Los Angeles, focusing on theatre by and about Black people. During his career, he has made several cameos, appearing, for example, in the Michael Jackson video "Liberian Girl" of 1987. Glover earned top billing for the first time in Predator 2, the sequel to the sci-fi action film Predator. That same year he starred in Charles Burnett's To Sleep with Anger, for which he won the Independent Spirit Award for Best Male Lead.
In common with Humphrey Bogart, Elliott Gould and Robert Mitchum, who have played Raymond Chandler's private eye detective Philip Marlowe, Glover played the role in the episode "Red Wind" of the Showtime network's 1995 series Fallen Angels. In 1997, under his former production company banner Carrie Films, Glover executive produced numerous films of first time directors including Pamm Malveaux's neo-noir short film Final Act starring Joe Morton, which aired on the Independent Film Channel. In addition, Glover has been a voice actor in many children's movies. Glover was featured in the popular 2001 film The Royal Tenenbaums, also starring Gwyneth Paltrow, Anjelica Huston, Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson.
In 2004, he appeared in the low-budget horror film Saw as Detective David Tapp. In 2005, Glover and Joslyn Barnes announced plans to make No FEAR, a movie about Dr. Marsha Coleman-Adebayo's experience. Coleman-Adebayo won a 2000 jury trial against the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The jury found the EPA guilty of violating the civil rights of Coleman-Adebayo on the basis of race, sex, color and a hostile work environment, under the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Coleman-Adebayo was terminated shortly after she revealed the environmental and human disaster taking place in the Brits, South Africa, vanadium mines. Her experience inspired passage of the Notification and Federal Employee Anti-discrimination and Retaliation Act of 2002 (No-FEAR Act). As of 2013 the No Fear title has not appeared but The Marsha Coleman-Adebayo Story was announced as the next major project of No Fear Media Productions.
Glover portrayed David Keaton in the film The Exonerated - a real-life story of Keaton's experience of being arrested, jailed and then freed from death row.
In 2009, Glover performed in The People Speak a documentary feature film that uses dramatic and musical performances of the letters, diaries, and speeches of everyday Americans, based on historian Howard Zinn's "A People's History of the United States".
Glover played President Wilson, the President of the United States in 2012, a disaster film directed by Roland Emmerich and released in theaters November 13, 2009. In 2010, Glover participated in a Spanish film called I Want to Be a Soldier. In 2012, he starred in the film Donovan's Echo.
Planned directorial debut
Glover sought to make a film biography of Toussaint Louverture for his directorial debut. In May 2006, the film had included cast members Wesley Snipes, Angela Bassett, Don Cheadle, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Roger Guenveur Smith, Mos Def, Isaach de Bankolé, and Richard Bohringer. Production, estimated to cost $30 million, was planned to begin in Poland, filming from late 2006 into early 2007. In May 2007, President of Venezuela Hugo Chávez contributed $18 million to fund the production of Toussaintfor Glover, who is a prominent U.S. supporter of Chávez. The contribution annoyed some Venezuelan filmmakers, who said the money could have funded other homegrown films and that Glover's film was not even about Venezuela. In April 2008, the Venezuelan National Assembly authorized an additional $9,840,505 for Glover's film, which is still in planning.
Public appearances
Glover appeared at London Film and Comic Con 2013 at Earls Court 2 over 2.5 days during Friday 5th to Sunday July 7. He participated in a panel discussion in McComb, Mississippi on July 16, 2015. The event, co-sponsored by The Gloster Project and Jubilee Performing Arts Center, included noted authors Terry McMillan and Quincy Troupe.
On January 30, 2015 Glover was the Keynote Speaker and 2015 Honoree for the MLK Celebration Series at the Rhode Island School of Design (Providence, RI). Glover used his career and personal story to speak on the topic "Creativity and Democracy: Social Change through the Arts."
Personal life
Glover purchased a 6,000-square-foot (560 m2) house in Dunthorpe, Oregon, in 1999. As of 2011, he no longer lived in Oregon.
On September 2, 2009, Glover signed an open letter of objection to the inclusion of a series of films intended to showcase Tel Aviv at the Toronto International Film Festival.
On April 16, 2010, Glover was arrested in Maryland during a protest by SEIU workers for Sodexo's unfair and illegal treatment of workers. He was given a citation and later released. The Associated Press reports "Glover and others stepped past yellow police tape and were asked to step back three times at Sodexo headquarters. When they refused, Starks says officers arrested them."
Activism
Civil rights activism
While attending San Francisco State University (SFSU), Glover was a member of the Black Students Union, which, along with the Third World Liberation Front and the American Federation of Teachers, collaborated in a five-month student-led strike to establish a Department of Black Studies. The strike was the longest student walkout in U.S. history. It helped create not only the first Department of Black Studies but also the first School of Ethnic Studies in the United States.
Hari Dillon, current president of the Vanguard Public Foundation, was a fellow striker at SFSU. Glover later co-chaired Vanguard's board. He is also a board member of The Algebra Project, The Black AIDS Institute, Walden House, and Cheryl Byron's Something Positive Dance Group. He was charged with disorderly conduct and unlawful assembly after being arrested outside the Sudanese Embassy in Washington during a protest over Sudan's humanitarian crisis in Darfur.
Glover's long history of union activism includes support for the United Farm Workers, UNITE HERE, and numerous service unions. In March 2010, Glover supported 375 Union workers in Ohio by calling upon all actors at the 2010 Academy Awards to boycott Hugo Boss suits following announcement of Hugo Boss's decision to close a manufacturing plant in Ohio after a proposed pay decrease from $13 to $8.30 an hour was rejected by the Workers United Union.
On November 1, 2011, Glover spoke to the crowd at Occupy Oakland on the day before the Oakland General Strike where thousands of protestors shut down the Port of Oakland.
Political activism
Glover was an early supporter of former North Carolina Senator John Edwards in the 2008 Democratic presidential primaries until Edwards' withdrawal, although some news reports indicated that he had endorsed Ohio Congressman Dennis Kucinich, whom he had endorsed in 2004. After Edwards dropped out, Glover then endorsed Barack Obama. In February 2016, Glover endorsed Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders for the Democratic presidential nomination.
Glover was an outspoken critic of George W. Bush, calling him a known racist. "Yes, he's racist. We all knew that. As Texas's governor, Bush led a penitentiary system that executed more people than all the other U.S. states together. And most of the people who died were Afro-Americans or Hispanics."
Glover's support of California Proposition 7 (2008) led him to use his voice in an automated phone call to generate support for the measure before the election.
On the foreign policy of the Obama administration, Glover said: "I think the Obama administration has followed the same playbook, to a large extent, almost verbatim, as the Bush administration. I don't see anything different... On the domestic side, look here: What's so clear is that this country from the outset is projecting the interests of wealth and property. Look at the bailout of Wall Street. Why not the bailout of Main Street? He may be just a different face, and that face may happen to be black, and if it were Hillary Clinton, it would happen to be a woman.... But what choices do they have within the structure?"
Glover wrote the foreword to Phyllis Bennis' book, Challenging Empire: How People, Governments, and the UN Defy US Power. Glover is also a member of the board of directors of the Center for Economic and Policy Research, a think tank led by economist Dean Baker.
InternationalAfrica
Glover is an active board member of the TransAfrica Forum. On April 6, 2009, Glover was given a chieftaincy title in Imo State, Nigeria. Glover was given the title Enyioma of Nkwerre, which means A Good Friend in the language of the Igbo people of Eastern Nigeria.
Caribbean and Haiti
On January 13, 2010, Glover compared the scale and devastation of the 2010 Haiti earthquake to the predicament other island nations may face as a result of the failed Copenhagen summit the previous year. Glover said: "...the threat of what happens to Haiti is a threat that can happen anywhere in the Caribbean to these island nations... they're all in peril because of global warming... because of climate change... when we did what we did at the climate summit in Copenhagen, this is the response, this is what happens..." In the same statement, he called for a new form of international partnership with Haiti and other Caribbean nations and praised Venezuela, Brazil, and Cuba, for already accepting this partnership.
Iraq War
Danny Glover has been an outspoken critic of the Iraq War before the war began in March 2003. In February 2003, he was one of the featured speakers at Justin Herman Plaza in San Francisco where other notable speakers included names such as author Alice Walker, singer Joan Baez, United Farm Workers co-founder Dolores Huerta and Rep. Barbara Lee, D-Oakland. Glover was a signatory to the April 2003 anti-war letter "To the Conscience of the World" that criticized the unilateral American invasion of Iraq that led to "massive loss of civilian life" and "devastation of one of the cultural patrimonies of humanity". During an anti-war demonstration in Downtown Oakland in March 2003, Glover praised the community leaders for their anti-war efforts saying that "They're on the front lines because they are trying to make a better America.... The world has come together and said 'no' to this war – and we must stand with them."
Venezuela
In January 2006, Harry Belafonte led a delegation of activists, including Glover and activist/professor Cornel West, in a meeting with President of Venezuela Hugo Chávez, with Glover calling Chávez "remarkable". In 2007, the Venezuelan government allotted $18 million to Glover for a film about a slave uprising in Haiti with Hugo Chávez hoping "to mobilise world public opinion against imperialism and western oppression". Glover was also a board member of TeleSUR, a media network primarily funded by the Venezuelan government.
During the beginning of the 2014 Venezuela Protests, Glover shared his support to Chávez's successor, President Nicolas Maduro, calling members of his government "the stewards" of Venezuela's democracy. Glover also told Venezuelan government supporters to go fight for the sovereignty of Maduro's government.
Music
Glover has become an active member of board of directors of The Jazz Foundation of America. Danny became involved with The Jazz Foundation in 2005, and has been a featured host for their annual benefit A Great Night in Harlem for several years, as well appearing as a celebrity MC at other events for the foundation. In 2006, Britain's leading African theatre company Tiata Fahodzi appointed Glover as one of its three Patrons, joining Chiwetel Ejiofor and Jocelyn Jee Esien opening the organization's tenth-anniversary celebrations (Sunday, February 2, 2008) at the Theatre Royal Stratford East, London.
Honors and awards
Utah State University
In 2010, Glover delivered the Commencement Address and was awarded an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from Utah State University.
Starr King School for the Ministry
Also in 2010, Starr King School for the Ministry awarded the Doctorate of Humane Letters (Litterarum Humanarum Doctor), in absentia, to Mr. Glover. His call to humanity to see itself as the recipient of a legacy of caring and commitment that began with prior parental and religious communities and that it should carry on for the sake of those who will follow are in alignment with Starr King's values. Mr. Glover was awarded the doctorate specifically for his long history of passionate activism, including support for the United Farm Workers, UNITE HERE, The Algebra Project, The Black AIDS Institute, as well as his humanitarian efforts on behalf of the Haiti earthquake victims, literacy and civil rights and his fight against unjust labor practices. Mr. Glover is co-founder and CEO of Louverture Films, dedicated to the development and production of films of historical relevance, social purpose, commercial value and artistic integrity; we honored his commitment to using film to lift up and advance social justice issues, such as his then recently released project "Trouble the Water", a documentary about New Orleans in the aftermath of hurricane Katrina.
Glover has had a close association with Starr King School through his role as guest lecturer in its course on Non Violent Social Change and lending his support and presence to events sponsored by Starr King's Masters of Arts in Social Change (MASC) program.
Deauville American Film Festival
He was also the recipient of a tribute paid by the Deauville American Film Festival in France on September 7, 2011.

The moment James Norton decided he might actually want to be an actor was during his appearance as Gwen Stefani in the school miming competition, when he was 11.
Most people chose songs by a boyband, or Coolio, but Norton picked Stefani, because he loved No Doubt. It was a boys’ school and the female costume department wasn’t very well-equipped – one pencil skirt and a blonde wig between them, whether you were Cleopatra or Courtney Love – so everyone assuming a female role looked rather similar, with very badly applied lipstick. ‘Really young weird drag queens is what we looked like,’ remembers Norton.
A video exists of this debut. ‘And in the first verse I was clearly terrified. But then I remember feeling the audience and being fuelled by them.’ By the second verse he starts to strut, out of nowhere, and the connection was made. ‘F— yeah!’ thought Norton. ‘This is it!’
Here we are 20 years later and Norton is having the time of his life. In what has become a varied career curriculum – a pop star (Gwen Stefani), a padre (Sidney Chambers in Grantchester), a prince (Andrei in War & Peace) and a psychopath (Tommy Lee Royce in Happy Valley), not to mention his theatre roles – Norton has managed to escape the sort of typecasting that could have defined him.
He is a good-looking, fairly posh, highly accomplished and intelligent actor, who in a short time has become very famous indeed.
When we meet he is rehearsing a role in Belleville (which has now just opened) at the Donmar Warehouse in London, and his reputation is set to soar with his new television role – as a young hedge-fund manager in McMafia, the BBC’s eight-part exploration of financial corruption and global organised crime.
Inspired by Misha Glenny’s book of the same name, the series was written by Hossein Amini (who wrote the 2011 film Drive) and James Watkins, who also directed it.
It was shot over eight months in London, Croatia, Moscow and Tel Aviv, with an international cast, including David Strathairn and Faye Marsay. Norton plays Alex Godman, the son of Russian exiles with mafia connections, who has been working to distance himself from his family’s reputation.
Glenny’s book is a masterful piece of investigative journalism and has quite a reputation with both law enforcers and gangsters.
‘Actors can be brilliant at what they do but they don’t necessarily engage in the issues or environment beyond their role,’ says Glenny, who acted as an adviser on the series. ‘James gets the character, and the environment and the issues. He has an extraordinary ability, which enables him to make this very subtle 180-degree turn over the eight episodes.’
It’s a Michael Corleone type role. When Norton was cast, the director told him that what they were hoping for in Alex Godman was part Sidney, part Tommy – somewhere between the vicar and the psychopath. Norton believes McMafia has a valid, topical message, what with the Paradise Papers and the climate of tax evasion, Russian interference and widespread corruption.
‘There’s such an appetite for it now; everyone wants to see what state-level corruption looks like. It’s a catalyst for a conversation, and hopefully we can use it to mobilise something – because of the way that financial institutions are structured, it’s impossible to police that grey area where legality ends and criminality begins.’
If I ever turned up in a convertible my family would just laugh We meet for breakfast in the Covent Garden Hotel on a cold November morning, before Norton’s rehearsal at the Donmar.
He is chatty and engaging and it is not long before we get on to the subject of his 92-year-old Great Aunt Grania (most interviews with Norton mention James Bond and his Great Aunt Grania), known for her confidence-boosting prowess. He tells me about the time when she looked at him quizzically over dinner and said, ‘I can’t understand why you look so good on the screen James, when you look so bland in real life.’
I don’t like to contradict a 92-year-old, but I beg to differ with Great Aunt Grania. Norton is much better looking in real life than on television. His face is full of light; so is his voice – and he laughs a lot and is ready to be amused at all times. He seems curious, well balanced and up for anything. I imagine he comes from a very happy family.  ‘I do,’ he says. They are, he says, his great leveller.
‘And you do need that constant reminder of who you were before the madness started. I am lucky to have such a normal, grounded family who are really supportive. They enjoy it all through me and I enjoy their enjoyment of it, but they’re never going to be seduced by it. Which means that hopefully I won’t get seduced by it either. If I ever turned up in a convertible my family would just laugh. The person I was at 25 is exactly the same person I am at 32.’
Norton was born in London but grew up in Malton, North Yorkshire. Both his parents worked full-time – unusual, he says, at that time for where they lived.
His father was a university lecturer and his mother started off as a nurse. ‘She didn’t come on holiday with us for several years because she was doing a PhD in her spare time. She’s a strong woman and an amazing example to us.’ His younger sister is a doctor.
Norton went to the local primary school and had a thick Yorkshire accent (not dissimilar to that of Tommy Lee Royce) then went to the public school Ampleforth College.
‘I didn’t love school. They were not the happiest five years of my life. I didn’t fit in. I hit puberty quite late, which made quite a big difference. I loved theatre and music, which wasn’t as cool as liking rugby and smoking. Also I really enjoyed the academic side and worked really hard; school set me up in a way because I wasn’t popular so had more time to work.’
He doesn’t come from a religious family, but Ampleforth was a strong Catholic school. ‘It was extraordinary. It’s stunning, set in this big valley which was often bathed in morning mist. And you have prayers three times a day, so it was really quite a magical, mystical place.’
Because he was unhappy at school – he was bullied a bit, but not badly – Norton made friends with the chaplain, Father Peter, who became a sort of therapist. A relationship with faith developed ‘but it was more of a fascination and a comfort than a belief’.
After school, ‘I sort of let rip. I went off on an eight-month wander around South Asia on my own and I went a bit crazy. I finally felt comfortable in my own skin – there’s so much contention in that small, pressure-cooker environment of school so when I found people I loved and who loved me it was an amazing relief.’
He spent three months teaching in Nepal then went to India (with a tiny battered little Nokia - no smartphones back then) and had a wild, eye-opening time.
The theatricality of faith in Nepal really appealed to him. ‘Every day seems to be some sort of religious festival; it’s so imbued in their culture and their daily lives.’
When he went to Cambridge he read theology, ‘but I’m not religious; I’m intrigued. And I studied mostly Hinduism or Buddhism, not much Christian theology at all, which was really awkward when people would come up to me on the set of Grantchester and say, “You know – from Corinthians, Chapter Two” and I hadn’t a clue what they were on about.’
He got a first from Cambridge, but still managed to fit in a lot of theatre and alcohol while he was there, and had a relationship with a girl who directed him in several theatre productions; he still wears a bracelet she gave him today. It reminds him, he says, of the second time when he suddenly felt he could be an actor.
‘It was probably the moment it turned from a dream into a reality,’ he says. By the time he left university he already had a place at Rada. ‘It’s such a great feeling when someone asks you what you want to do with your life and you can reply “I’m an actor” – rather than, “I want to act.”’
To support himself, he worked as a children’s party entertainer in the holidays.  Norton graduated from Rada six months early, having secured an agent and made a brief appearance in An Education in 2009. His first major theatrical role was in Laura Wade’s play Posh at the Royal Court in 2010, about the Riot Club, a fictionalised version of The Bullingdon Club at Oxford.
‘There were 10 guys in the cast and every evening, after the play, we’d spend all our wages on booze. It was like a sports team.’  In 2011 he appeared in a revival of Journey's End at the Duke of York theatre, to this day one of his favourite roles.
A solid two years of theatre followed. ‘There were endless conversations with my agent about trying to nail a film role – and then suddenly you break through and your schedule changes – especially if you get a recurring series like Grantchester or Happy Valley – and you have no time left for theatre.’
He then went four years without doing a play at all – until last year’s Bug at the Soho Theatre, and now Belleville at the Donmar. Belleville is a punchy piece of writing by Amy Herzog about a young couple who’ve graduated from Yale and decide to move to Paris. Norton plays a doctor; Imogen Poots is out of work his actor wife. They’re living the American dream, but they have a certain sense of entitlement, and, inevitably, everything falls apart.
Norton didn’t know Poots before they were cast, but they were soon rehearsing sex scenes together. ‘I had only met her two weeks before. You have to just trust, and let yourself be vulnerable.
'Of course it has a brilliant side to it – you get to know someone so quickly and intimately, and you build fantastic relationships; similarly with the director.  I think the definition of an extrovert is someone whose energy is fuelled by other people, which I think I am – so a rehearsal room is a joy.’
Norton appeared in the TV series Death Comes to Pemberley (2013) and Life in Squares (2015), but it was three roles in fairly quick succession that made him a household name: firstly, as the 1950s cleric Reverend Sidney Chambers in Grantchester (2014-17), which had three series.
This, he says now, is the most fun he has ever had on set, mainly because of his friendship with Robson Green, who plays Inspector Geordie Keating. (At one point Green was ordered off set by the director because they were laughing so much.)
He also played Prince Andrei Bolkonsky in Andrew Davies’ revered six-part adaptation of War and Peace (2016), and Tommy Lee Royce in Sally Wainwright’s brilliant BBC police drama Happy Valley (2014-16), which won a Bafta, and saved him, he says, from a life sentence of period drama.
Wainwright, the gifted writer of Last Tango in Halifax and Scott & Bailey, had seen Norton on stage in Journey’s End, but he was still pretty unknown when the call went out to audition for the part of Tommy Lee Royce, the psychopathic killer who becomes Sgt Catherine Cawood’s nemesis in a small town in West Yorkshire.
Norton already had the right accent from growing up in Malton. He was sent the script while he was in South Africa doing a ‘rather ropey’ film about Vikings, and he recorded his audition on video. He was very impressed by the screenplay, but didn’t really think he’d get the part. So, he says, he had nothing to lose, and went for it.
‘The character was so rich… my [audition] scene was the most incredible piece of writing, where a man is so sad and damaged that the most loving act he can think of to do for his eight-year-old son is to kill him.’ Not long after, he got a call from his agent to tell him that the part was his. ‘Being offered Tommy changed my life because it’s opened so many doors. It showed that I could play the baddie.’
And he did it memorably. As Tommy Lee Royce he was horribly convincing – so much so that once when he was in a queue, the girl in front of him turned round and saw him, screamed and ran away.
Last year, he was tipped to be the next James Bond, and became the bookies’ favourite. He gets asked about it constantly, but there's not much to say.
‘It would come with incredible challenges, but beyond that I haven’t thought about it at length because it’s so speculative and silly. I’m flattered that people would even consider me. But I’m also a huge fan of Daniel Craig, so would want him to do a few more films.’
Happy Valley, which won a Bafta, saved him, he says, from a life sentence of period drama Norton is permanently busy. He has just filmed the remake of the ’90s classic Flatliners; today he is rehearsing for Belleville and then recording voiceovers for McMafia, this evening he is attending a ball in aid of JDRF (Junior Diabetic Research Fund).
He has type 1 diabetes, having developed it when he was 22. His mother and his sister are also diabetic. He injects himself several times a day, but has incorporated it into his life and doesn’t let it deter him. ‘So for example, the kedgeree is about to arrive and I’ll have an injection to counter the carbs; it’s just about having a level of awareness about what you’re eating.
‘It’s interesting being on stage or on set because your body is full of adrenalin and that screws up your sugar, especially when I’m on stage for a full hour and a half. I have to anticipate it at the beginning of the show and make sure my sugar levels are going up or are at least stable. In period plays, I’ve had to stitch little pockets in my costume for sugar tablets.’
A few years ago, during a performance of Journey’s End, Norton was shaking a bit, and sweating from the adrenalin because the play was going well, but one of the other actors thought he was hypoing and told the stage manager.
‘Pandemonium broke loose. The next thing I know, they’re improvising and offering me Lucozade in a teacup, saying, “Cup of tea, sir?” and putting biscuits all over the dugout. So there have been moments where diabetes and theatre have collided.’ But since he started talking about it, he’s realised that he can have a positive influence on young diabetics and demonstrate that it’s a manageable condition.
What else? He lives in Peckham, in a house full of vintage clothes left over from when he used to run a clothes stall in Nunhead, and firmly refuses to talk about his love life, despite what I thought was some rather persuasive questioning on my part.
‘Let’s leave that one vague. Just say that at that point I started tucking into my kedgeree…’ He smiles broadly, disarmingly, but he is steely. Somewhere between a vicar and a psychopath.

REBOOTED
Dear friends, audience, actors, creatives, participants and children,
In 2010, when we wanted to stop producing low-budget fringe, our bilingual young audience residency at the Institut français du Royaume-Uni (You can watch the video retrospective of this two years residency in our facebook playlist and Instagram) allowed us to start to actually pay people and acquire our studio space, The Trap - Rehearsal Studio.
In 2015, when we encountered a number of difficulties, our pupils shows commissioned by the Lycée Français Charles de Gaulle de Londres kept us going, scaled up the work and led us to the forefront of the Off West End, to many productions and collaborations until last March, and to a new found recognition.
Now in 2020, after the covid crisis and the theatres closure, it seems THE CHILDREN WILL SAVE US again!
- We have announced that we have been invited to produce a family show at the South Ken Kids Festival 2020! We are adapting one of our children show for our participation in the light of our times. We are so lucky to be commissioned our return back on a theatre-stage and impatient to see you in the audience again on the 18th of November! Watch this space!
Exchange Theatre is back ON STAGE with a new family show,
No need to introduce Charles Perrault’s Puss in Boots? Seen as a cunning joker and a thief, the cat is one of the most beloved heroes for the children as the adults! Is he just a master trickster ?
Going back to family shows in 2020, in a covid world, also changed by #metoo, #BlackLivesMatter and many other mindful important causes, is a responsibility as much entertainment: it bears questions asked to us as individuals and as creatives about the stories we want to tell you.
As part of the 23rd South Ken Kids Festival, with themes of Kindness, Fraternity and Diversity, our anti-racism version reclaims Le Chat Botté for what he really is: all he does is out of generosity and justice and the story of the marquis de Carabas is one of the best models of social mobility.
LE CAT IN (re)BOOTS !
Our Cat breaks down all barriers of class and origins. He makes his master's fortune by playing tricks on everyone, even the King, but are they tricks or justice?
- #ArtIsWork #ReBooted #WeAreViable
Yesterday, the Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport and Arts Council awarded the CULTURE RECOVERY FUND: £257 million to save 1385 theatres, arts venues, museums and cultural organisations across England. A lot of our friends and colleagues count amongst these companies, institutions and structures. We congratulate them and we are relieved and grateful for our sector.
On Saturday we launched our REBOOTED newsletter. Little did we know that it was also the word chosen for the #Rethink #Reskill #Reboot campaign led by the government and reignited yesterday as well, causing an understandable outrage from artists. It followed another scandal last week, the Chancellor's suggestion to seize 'new opportunties' in an interview where he also said the words 'not viable' about some of our works, which was - again legitimately- perceived as neglecting people's trainings, vocations and importance in society, telling artists and many others to just retrain and change jobs.
In the current uproar, we want to add our humble voice: It needs to be known that artists, companies, venues, entertainers, all across the board have been already working at Rethinking, and "Re-skilling" themselves for 7 months ! We have all gone online, questionned our ways, invented new process, having hundreds of game-changing conversations and we are already re-inventing the cultural offers of tomorrow on a daily basis. Nobody was sitting and waiting for this fund or this campaign to start changing. We are REBOOTED already !
- Rebuilding a better world after the virus is also in our pledge to increasing the representation of migrant theatre artists in UK theatre. We would like to invite artists identifying as migrant/foreign born/international to register and take part in the first London Town Hall on the 16th of October, (https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/migrants-in-theatre-london-town-hall-tickets-121926504457) with the participation of Battersea Arts Centre, Gate Theatre, LIFT, New Diorama Theatre, Royal Court and the Young Vic.
We have been urged to change through lock-down. Now we feel challenged and rebooted!

«Rachel, who came to Rafah to stop the tanks. We remember her with love and honour as an inspiration.»
«This has to stop. I think it is a good idea for us all to drop everything and devote our lives to making this stop. I don't think it's an extremist thing to do anymore. I still really want to dance around to Pat Benatar and have boyfriends and make comics for my coworkers. But I also want this to stop.» – Rachel Corrie, excerpt from an email to her parents [in My Name is Rachel Corrie, taken from the writings of Rachel Corrie, edited by Alan Rickman and Katharine Viner, with the permission of the Corrie family, in collaboration with the Royal Court Theatre International Department, Theatre Communications Group, New York, NY, 2006, pp. 49-50]

The cruise lasts 1 hour and 15 minutes and during which you’ll get to admire the city’s architecture and plenty of other spectacular sites from the water – such as the Golden Bend, the Overhoeks, the Skinny Bridge and more. Get your camera ready as you’ll get plenty of chances to snap away.
3. Hop-On Hop-Off Bus Tour with Boat Option
A Hop-On Hop-Off tour is a great way to move around the city and see many of Amsterdam’s tourist hotspots.
With ticket durations ranging from 24 to 48 hours, you can customise and coordinate your self-guided tour to see many beloved attractions throughout the city. Including highlights such as Museum Square, the Heineken Experience, the Anne Frank House, National Maritime Museum, and so much more.
Between stops, listen to the onboard audio guide for exclusive facts and stories of Amsterdam.

4. Volendam, Edam, and Windmills Guided Tour
If you’re eager to escape the buzz of the city for a day, consider the “Volendam, Edam, and Windmills Guided Tour”.
The tour starts with a short, 20-minute drive to the windmill village of Zaanse Schans. Aside from these enormous structures, the small town also houses traditional architecture, tasty dishes, and entertaining workshops – such as a clog-making demonstration.
Next up is a stop by Edam, where your guide will lead you through the old streets and canals. This will be followed by a visit to a nearby cheese farm, where the famous Edam Cheese is made. Not only will you see how it’s created, but you can also expect a taste of both traditional and eccentric flavours.
The last destination of this tour is the coastal fishing town of Volendam – popular for its bustling main street, plenty of shopping opportunities, and dutch houses.
5. Cocktails at Amsterdam’s Ice Bar
As the name suggests, the Ice Bar is made almost entirely of ice, 35 tons in fact. This includes the furniture and walls – making it a unique and memorable spot to relax and enjoy freshly made cocktails.
This experience allows you to visit the Ice Bar at a designated time (in exchange for your voucher) and will include 2 complimentary drinks in a glass made of ice.
6. Red Light District 2-Hour Walking Tour
If you’re looking to explore Amsterdam’s famous Red Light District but aren’t quite sure where to start, this walking tour can be a great way to get your bearings and uncover what’s on offer.
Accompanied by a knowledgeable guide, the 2-hour walking tour will weave you through the streets to show what’s around – ranging from jazz clubs and coffee shops to adult theatres.
Some notable sites you can expect to see include the Old Church, the Condomerie, Warmoesstraat, and so much more.
The tour finishes off with a free shot at the Belushi Bar.
7. Day Trip to Giethoorn
Another great option if you’d like to escape the city for the day is the “Day Trip To Giethoorn” experience – which runs over 9 hours.
After travelling to and arriving at the town of Giethoorn (otherwise known as the Venice of the Netherlands), you’ll explore the fairytale-like village with a 1-hour boat tour. From here, you’ll be able to admire the architecture from a fresh perspective. To help you learn more about this beautiful part of the Netherlands you’ll also have a live guide.
8. Rotterdam, Delft, and The Hague Group Tour
There’s no shortage of exciting day tours from Amsterdam – including this “Rotterdam, Delft, & The Hague Small Group Tour”.
After departing the city you’ll venture to Rotterdam, where you can look forward to admiring the cityscape with a 75-minute boat cruise. Afterwards, you’ll venture to Delft to hear all about the dutch artist Vermeer, as well as the various members of the Dutch Royal Family.
The last stop will be to the Hague to see a variety of crucial sites – such as the International Court of Justice, International Criminal Court, Peace Palace, and more.
9. Life of Anne Frank and World War 2 Walking Tour
If you’re eager to dive deep into Amsterdam’s expansive history, this Life Of Anne Frank And World War 2 Walking Tour is a must-do.
Set in the city’s Jewish quarter, you can expect to hear about Anne Frank’s life during the war, the conditions she endured, and her family’s dynamic. On top of this, you’ll also see the Anne Frank House, Jewish Historical Museum, and Auschwitz Monument.
10. 1.5 Hour Evening Canal Cruise
What better way to finish off a day in Amsterdam than with a relaxing evening cruise along the city’s canals.
As Amsterdam’s street lights begin to illuminate the city, you’ll calmly float by a variety of picturesque scenes along the Canal Belt. During the tour, the guide will also share stories and historical facts while pointing out various local hotspots.
This evening tour is the perfect way to gain a whole new perspective of the city and a wonderful night activity to undertake in Amsterdam.

111 DJs - 4 stage hosts - 2 voyages From 30/08 - 03/09 and from 03/09 - 07/09 As the 2018 edition gets ever closer, THE ARK is now revealing the whole of its impressive line-up, featuring 111 DJs over four stages hosted by 15 leading dance brands. The names on the line-up are completely different for both departures (from August 30th to September 3rd and September 3rd to 7th) thereby allowing you to chose the one that best suits you this summer, and each one is a mix of established names and young talents featuring a mix of names such as Booka Shade, Loco Dice, Faithless (DJ set), Nastia, Patrick Topping, Luciano, Nic Fancuilli, Andrea Oliva, Miguel Campbell, Camelphat, Claptone, Yousef  and many many more. More than ever in 2018, THE ARK is focusing on a 'mature sound', so a wide selection of electronic music genres are addressed, with extra attention to house and deep-house. These styles perfectly match the intimate club spirit of the four different stages spread across the stunning Vision of the Seas cruise ship, including an impressive open air stage on the upper deck around the pool. Those who opt for the first sailing will be presented with names such as Booka Shade, Camelphat, Claptone, Nic Fanciulli and Patrick Topping. All of these big name house tastemakers not only dominate the turntables but also the charts, such as Cameplhat with 'Cola' and Claptone with 'No Eyes'.  Best to these, there is also room for a heavy dose of retro with none other than Sister Bliss, the ravishing DJ behind the Faithless hit machine. She makes her appearance for a 'Faithless DJ Set'. There will also be a lot of  Belgian DJ stars on board including Buscemi, Sven van Hees and Yves Deruyter and 'young gods' like Curtis Alto and Sem Thomasson. Passengers who opt for the second sailing will be served by DJs like Adriatique, Art Department, Dada Life, Loco Dice, Luciano and THE ARK’s very own Henri PFR. These are assisted by 'hit machines' such as Fatman Scoop and Infinity Ink, and here too, the Belgian sound is well represented with John Noseda, Kenn Colt, Mystique, Neon, TLP, and more. The ARK consists of more than just parties for this sensational 2018 edition: good food and drink, sport and relaxation, beauty and wellness and discovering the ports and islands where the ship will moor are also an integral part of the experience. Our special guest chefs, mixologists and yoga instructors will be announced next week to add even more temptation to the trips. Ticket prices start from €149 per person for the shortest package of 2 days / 1 night and from €649 per person for the basic package of 5 days / 4 nights. There is also a 4 days, 3 nights package available from €549.
