-You've worked so hard. Will you give it all up [to free Bheem]? Will you give up fifteen years of work?
-I'll do it for another fifteen years. But I won't sacrifice Bheem for my goal.
-Think first. It's very dangerous. You might die.
-I'll die with pride.

RRR (2022, dir S. S. Rajamouli)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
things i am not now and likely never will get over from RRR
DRIFT COMPATIBLE BATTLE COUPLE DETECTED
queer? platonic? queerplatonic? who gives a shit no matter what it was it was AWESOME
Colonialism Is Bad Actually: The Musical
the symbolism. holy shit. every BIT of it was absolutely amazing.
wow all the mains in this movie are just, really hot? my poor lil pan heart had a rough time with this one ngl
the fact that someone (likely many someones) watched this movie about Colonialism Is Bad Actually and said 'you know what let's dub this whole thing into Hindi and English and then not give an option to watch it with the original Telugu dialogue' sure was,,,,,,,,, A Choice
THE MUSIC
by which i mean the actual song-and-dance numbers as well as the like story soundtrack all of it is going on my playlist asap
listen the spirk-behind-glass scene is awful. spock and kirk can't even touch. they can hear. they can see. but they cannot touch. and i in my sweet ignorant bliss thought that was as bad as it could get.
tonight i learned that holding someone in your arms through the bars of their cell is so much worse
I watched it on Netflix but i looked it up on a few other ahem websites and on EVERY SINGLE ONE Telugu audio wasn't even an option.
there was not one single chance to tie things together or make a connection or do a setup/payoff or callback that was not taken. not a single one.
everything about this movie is 100% Extra
in short: this movie is a masterclass
aaaaaand the rest below a cut because WOW i have a lot to say actually
which brings me to the dancing oh my gods. not sure i've ever seen such enthusiastic dancing in anything in my entire life. seriously by the final number i was exhausted just watching them
in general, this movie is: stunning
"RAM." "BHEEM." "SEETHA." IT'S ABOUT THE SYMBOLISM.
also this was kinda hilarious because i watched it in hindi [the least disorienting option] and they kept SAYING "ram" but in the subs it was always fuckin RAJU so like. again with the Choices. like seriously what was the thought process there. WAS there a thought process.
FIRE. WATER. STORY. I JUST. I. HELP ME.
i ADORED jenny. with my whole entire heart. she is one of the very BEST examples of Ignorance Is A Privilege and also At What Point Does Ignorance Become Malicious that i have ever ever seen. i loooooooooved it. i mean i hated it a whole lot while it was happening but also i am SO GLAD that now rather than trying to explain all of this to people i can just tell them to watch this movie and then sit them down and be like, so what are your thoughts on jenny's culpability in literally everything?
oh and how you can be a kind person and still do atrocities! like jenny is so sweet and so kind and you just like her so much and yet. and yet.
t h e s y m b o l i s m
i cannot remember the last time i saw a movie so visually stunning. the cinematography is breathtaking. pause on just about any random frame and it could be a movie poster or hanging in an art gallery or what have you.
they also dubbed all the lines that were actually in english? i mean i get it for the characters who spent most of the movie speaking Telugu because you'd need their voices to stay the same through the whole movie yeah fine whatever. but like. they dubbed all the ENGLISH characters, too? like literally dubbed them from english into english??? the dialogue matched their mouths except the timing was veeeery sliiiiiiiightly off but it SOUNDED really obviously dubbed??? Y THO???
HOLY SHIT THE FIGHT SCENES OH MY GODS
Malli. Malli honey i love you. i'm just realizing i don't know if that's your actual name gods damn it. but whatever your name is child i love you.
and did i mention that everyone in this movie is beautiful? like. seriously. Ram and Bheem especially holy SHIT.
Physics Does Not Work Like That And I Do Not Care Because That Was AWESOME: The Musical
oooohhhhh they re-recorded and dubbed the fucking SONGS too. i am so pissed about this y'all i can't even tell you.
oh i want to do a whole entire post that's even longer than this one about the symbolism. hell i could probably do a whole entire post just on the fire/water symbolism even without everything else. It was AMAZING.
okay ram is fire and bheem is water and ram's people go to a valley on the shores of a river and the river is in literally every shot of the village and just ram BEING fire but water being a place of HOME and SAFETY for ram
i'm not crying shut up
MALLI AND HER MOTHER TRY TO REACH EACH OTHER BUT THEY CANNOT TOUCH THROUGH THE GLASS
BHEEM AND MALLI HOLD EACH OTHER THROUGH THE BARS OF HER CONFINEMENT AND HE HAS TO LET GO AND LEAVE HER
BHEEM AND RAM HOLD EACH OTHER THROUGH THE BARS OF HIS CONFINEMENT AND BHEEM RIPS THE DOOR RIGHT OFF
ooooooohhhhhhh and people holding hands right before they part. oh that hurts. all of those hurt so bad.
how every single time people held hands when they parted they always held on till the last possible second EXCEPT FOR RAM'S MOM.
she lifts her hand away from him and then pulls back and it was devastating
Predators Do Not Work Like That But I Do Not Care Because That Was Awesome And Also They Ate A Bunch Of Colonizing Cops: Queercoded Edition (ACAB)
bheem with his arms spread and rope or chains around his wrists or in his hands. i just. the way it flipped back and forth from 'he has the power' to 'he is helpless' to 'he should be helpless and isn't' was just. breathtaking.
AND THEN. AND THEN RAM. CHAINED UP THE SAME WAY. DOING THE SAME GODDAMN THING AND USING THE FACT THAT HE'S CHAINED UP FOR HIS OWN FUCKING PURPOSES BECAUSE HE SAW BHEEM DO IT FIRST DON'T TOUCH ME
okay listen this movie would've been good no matter what but like. they really are just SO beautiful. and. when ram. with like the long hair. and. beard. and like. you know? like. his. his hair. his general. everything. um.
literally at the most emotionally inappropriate moment i literally thought about that whole 'i saw a man so beautiful i started crying' thing and like that almost literally happened literally
Why There Can't Be Any Such Thing As Good Cops: The Romance (ACAB)
and like here's the thing i'm not sure i would've even NOTICED this had it not been for the linguistic chauvinism with the audio and everything but like both of them were hindu and a lot of the symbolism though awesome was also really strongly hindu and i just i don't know nearly enough about hindutva to have any kind of opinion BUT i also feel like maaaaaaaybe there was something a little uncomfy about some of this
oh no wait the suspenders dance. that might've actually been the best part. yeah.
oh all the british actors did SUCH a good job being so eminently punchable
throw cheetahs at each other! and snakes! somehow have upper body strength greater than the force exerted by a 800+ lb tiger lunging! throw those motorcycles! punch through those walls without breaking your fingers! use herbal paste to heal broken bones in a matter of a minutes! break solid stone with nothing but the strength of your shoulders and gay love! i am so here for all of this!!!
Throw Rocks Marble Pillars Live Tigers Cops At Cops: The Movie (ACAB)
i love that jenny felt bad for the poor little girl who got kidnapped enslaved and imprisoned so she. bought her a dress and a toy.
you know, to make her feel better about the whole 'being kidnapped enslaved and imprisoned' thing.
instead of doing, i don't know know, literally anything else. like even just saying to her aunt 'hey this makes me sad' or something. #solidarity.
the violence was violent and the romance was sweet
okay so during the fight at the midpoint like i know that by the end of it ram and bheem are literal fire and water BUT ALSO. Ram enters the scene in a flaming carriage and from that point forward the fountain is in pretty much every shot of bheem. just sayin.
love that lachu (or whatever his name really is) told ram that there was no cure. like yes! you go man! ram may be so beautiful that in forty minutes i'm going to be in tears but that's no reason to tell a cop the truth about anything! you lie to that cop man!
A BRITISH SOLDIER HIT LOKI IN THE HEAD WITH A BRANCH AND THEN STOLE MALLI AWAY
BHEEM HIT RAM IN THE HEAD WITH A BRANCH AND THEN STOLE MALLI AWAY
i know other people got hit in the head with tree branches too but STILL
honestly i really like that ram and bheem were, well, ram and bheem. but i mean im glad they weren't like ram and lakshman or bheem and arjun or something. not even just because that would've been brotherly like i'm glad they weren't arjun and krishna or something either. i liked that their names weren't from the same story. i liked it better this way and i can't even articulate why.
i am never ever ever going to get over the progression of part of bheem's introduction being something going wrong and him holding two ropes (he has all the power) with his arms spread and that being used to show us how incredibly strong he is -> something going wrong and bheem with ropes around his wrists (he shouldn't have any power at all) holding his arms spread and that being used to show how incredibly strong he is in a completely different way
like every time there were ropes or chains in bheem's hands or around his wrists it meant something, and it was a beat in the rhythm of a discernable arc, but now i can't remember all of them gdi
oooohhhhh there was SO much more symbolism i wanted to talk about but it's so late that i have a headache and this post is so long my computer's lagging like two sentences behind so i should stop and go to bed. sigh.
just go watch this movie, okay? pleae? I cannot IMAGINE who would've read this whole thing,m but if you did, just watch it, all rigth? (and if you happen to know of any site - ANY site - where i can watch it in FUKIN TELUGU kindly drop a link please and thank)

Y/N stayed with Lady Scott, even after Jenny asked her to join her friends. She politely declined Jenny’s offer, taking her place beside Malli who was, of course forced to stay with the bitch. She watched the party. She knew what to expect after the party Jenny had invited them to. But this even was completely over the top. The lights, the food, the fireworks. Her blood boiled thinking about the way her people had suffered to give them this kind of money and abundance. But she schooled her face into a smile, keeping her hand on Malli’s shoulder.
She watched as Lady Scott greeted her guests and accepted the compliments oh so graciously. She suppressed the urge to stab her right there. If things went according to the plan, she would have a chance to stab her and watch her bleed to death. Slowly. Till then she decided to imagine that scenario and be happy. Malli kept looking at her questioningly. She kept smiling reassuring the girl. All that was left was to wait for Bheem. She knew he should be crashing in any moment now.
“What an magnificent event you have put on-” A man told Catherine, kissing her knuckles and she smiled proudly. Y/N mentally rolled her eyes. She heard the gate open, her ears picked up the starting sound of the truck she had heard so many times before and she held her breath. She squeezed Malli’s shoulder, as the shouts started growing in distance. In a moment, the wooden gate was torn apart like it was made of cloth and the truck came to a stop in the middle of the party. Even though she knew what was going to happen, goosebumps rose on her skin as Bheem jumped out of the truck with roughly thirty wild animals.
Everyone stared at him in fear, as he landed on the ground. She grinned in delight. Of course they hadn’t seen it coming. Malli’s eyes widened as she saw her brother and she looked up at Y/N. She nodded at the little girl. Bheem shooed the animals way with fire. Within a moment, screams echoed from every corner of the palace as they wrecked havoc. Y/N decided it was soothing on a spiritual level to hear these bastards scream.
She held Malli’s hand and pulled her seeing Lady Scott being distracted from a guy getting his neck torn away by a leopard.
“Come on.” She whispered, as they started running towards the door, dodging the animals. She ignored the chaos around her, her only goal being taking Malli outside the palace gate.
“Where is she taking the girl?” A guy shouted, looking at them. She sighed, taking out the dagger tucked at her waist. When she heard someone charge towards them, she turned around, her blade cutting through the flesh of the officer’s chest with a satisfying noise. It had been a while since she drenched her dagger in blood. With another quick move, she pushed Malli behind her, slashing other guard’s throat in a quick motion. She wiped the blood on her face with the back of her palm and started running towards the gate.
She saw a tiger run towards them, a bit too late. There was no point in moving. She hugged Malli, shielding her from the attack and closed her eyes. When the claws did not scratch her skin open, she looked over her shoulder to see another guy in uniform holding a burning log. She held her dagger high, ready to attack when he turned around.
“Ram?” She said, surprised, “what-”
“Move!” He shouted as another animal pounced. She ducked, pushing Malli out of the way on the other side, as Ram hit it with fire and it ran away.
She looked in Malli’s direction, only to see the space empty. She looked around frantically shouting her name. But in the chaos she could not find her. She saw a glimpse of Malli’s braided hair being dragged away from her, but before she could run in that direction, Ram was already holding her wrist dragging her out of the palace.
“Malli! Ram, wait! Malli!” She shouted, but her husband did not budge.
“Ram what are you doing, stop!” She said, trying to free her hand from his grip. Once they were out of the palace, Ram broke open the lock of a shop, pushing her in.
“What is going on?” He asked, finally looking at her.
“What is wrong with you? I need to get in there-” She shouted, trying to get out of the shop. He stood in front of the door, blocking her way. He held her wrists, keeping her in place.
“Y/N, what is going on?” He asked.
“I need to free Malli.” She shouted looking over his shoulder, “You don’t understand how important this is for me and-”
“Akhtar?” He asked.
She stopped struggling, as she heard the venom in his voice. She looked at his face. Yellow light of street illuminated his face. He was furious. His knuckles were bloodied, just like his eyes.
“You know.” She said.
“How long have you known?” He asked.
“It does not matter right now- We need to help him.”
“How long have you known?” He asked, again.
“Ever since the day of the dance party. Ram, what-” She stared at him, “Wait, didn’t Bheem drop you at home? Weren’t you bitten?”

...
You barged into his house only to find him writing something on his desk. He turned around startled at the sound of the door slamming behind you. His face relaxed as he saw it was just you. He dropped his pen on the desk, turning to face you. You were mad, to say the least. You did not even look at him and you muttered curses under your breath, walking around.
“Hey!” He said, twirling his chair lightly amused at your mood.
“Stupid! I told them a thousand times before, but no one listens! How dare they! They thought they could trick me into THIS?” You snapped, pacing in the room, “stupid! All of them!”
“What happened now?” He frowned.
“What happened?” You asked, stopping in your tracks to look at him.
His frown deepened. Oh yeah, you definitely were in a mood.
“I will tell you what happened.” You said, gesturing at yourself. He looked at you from head to toe. You were wearing a gorgeous yellow saree with a green border. Gold bangles adorned your wrist and a heavy neckless rested around your neck. You would have loved it in any other situation, but today, all you wanted to do was throw it away.
“You look beautiful!” Ram said, mesmerised.
That made you even more angry. Because how dumb can he be?
“I know! I know, I look beautiful today, Ram. And stop twirling that chair, I am going to throw a book at your head if you keep doing that.” You glared at him. He gave you a confused look and did not stop.
“You know why I am wearing all this? Because my family is having guests over for chai. You know why?” You asked, crossing your hands across your chest, “because they are fixing my marriage to some random man.”
You had not told your family about Ram. You two were, well close. And you loved him though none of you ever explicitly said it. You both knew and you knew he was the one you were going to marry if you were ever going to marry anyone at all. You have been avoiding the topic of marriage altogether since Ram was busy with his work and you knew he would want to wait for a while. You thought they had given up, but no. You woke up that day with your sister ushering you to get ready. It wasn’t until you were all dolled up, she told you about the actual thing. You stormed out of your house and showed up at his place, not really sure what you wanted from him, but it sure as hell was not this. He looked so nonchalant about the whole thing and that infuriated you.
“Oh.” He said.
“Yes, Ram, oh.”
You waited for his reaction. He stopped twirling his chair as he stared at you. You waited for him to say something. To stand up and do something! But he stayed there. A moment later, he started twirling his chair again irritating you more.
“Han toh, what are you doing here?” He asked.
“What?” You asked surprised.
“Shouldn’t you be at your place when they arrive?”
You clenched you jaw as you realised what he was talking about.
“Right.” You deadpanned, “I should go meet the guy.”
“Yes, exactly,” Ram nodded very seriously, “maybe he is the right one for you! You never know.”
You fisted your pallu to keep yourself from punching the man you loved the most in the world as you put on a too sweet to be true smile on your face.
“You are right.” You said, “maybe he is the right one for me.”
Ram shrugged as if to say see!
“I should go home and greet them, serve them food and chai and get married at the earliest mahurat.” You said very cheerfully.

Ram x Reader
Tumblr media
...
It was a fine day. The leaves crunched under your feet as you walked through the forest just outside the city. You had not seen Ram since the morning. When you ran into Akhtar on your way to the market, he told you that he hadn’t seen Ram either. He wasn’t at his home, not at the head quarters. That left just one place. The place in the forest, where he liked to go to practice shooting. You had been here once before, with Akhtar. But finding him alone was proving to be quite a task. Just when you were about to give up and trace your steps back to the city, you heard an arrow cut through the air. A smile took over your face as you walked in the direction of the sound.
A few steps later, your eyes landed on the man you were looking for. He stood shirtless, in the middle of the trees, holding his bow up. His other hand drew back the string along with the arrow. You saw his back muscles tense at the action and your breath got caught in your throat. His brown skin glistened in the golden sunlight peeking through the branches. From where you were standing, you saw him furrow his brows in concentration. You held your breath as he aimed. The string snapped into its place as he shot the arrow. The air around you whistled as the arrow hit the exact target.
“It’s rude to sneakily just watch someone.” You heard him say, as he turned around.
“I wasn’t being sneaky.” You snapped, taking a step out of the trees, coming into his sight, “how did you know I was here?”
“Your anklets.” He said, and you smiled.
“Well, I was trying not to disturb you.”
“What are you doing here?” He asked, taking another arrow out of the quiver on his back.
“I was looking for you to return this book.” You said, holding up a book you had borrowed from him a while ago. Honestly, that was a lie. You wanted to see him and book was just an excuse. You had finished reading it on the same day you got it from him. But you saved the book as an excuse for the day when you won’t have anything else, like today.
“How did you like it?” He asked, holding the bow up and loading the arrow. He looked so graceful that you had to remind yourself to take your eyes off of his perfect stance and answer his question.
“The language is a little too flowery for my liking, but it okay.” You said, bouncing on your toes. You saw a small smirk on his face, before the arrow left the bow and hit the target again. You were not surprised. You knew Ram was a gifted archer. You had never seen him in action though. And the god knew how difficult it was for you to process his words and answer his questions when he was looking like that.
He turned a little and you caught the sight of the silver Om on his chest. You suppressed the thoughts that rose in your mind as a faint blush covered your face. But he had caught you staring at him.
“What?” He raised his eyebrows teasingly.
You shook your head, looking at the blue sky, or what was visible of it through the leaves.
“You were staring.” He said.
“I have always wanted to learn archery.” You said, in haste. It was half true. But that definitely wasn’t the reason why you were staring.
“You never told me.” Ram said, tilting his head to a side.
“It never came up?” Your words came out more like a question.
“I can teach you.” He said, in all seriousness.
“Really?” You asked, surprised.
He nodded.
“Come here.”
“Now?”
“Do we need a mahurat?”
You rolled your eyes, placing the book on a rock on his neatly folded shirt. You walked upto him, thinking what you had gotten yourself into.

Ram is a cat/tiger
Change my mind, you cant
-the wtf you're so dumb look he gives Bheem when bheem is being all innocent and clueless about Jenny
-the sheer slyness of that tyre puncture, the way he was so proud of himself like the cat who knocked over the cup of water
-the way he preens when bheem compliments (*cough* worships *cough*) him
-the way my guy roars in the interval fight scene (which yes, was dominated by bheem, is bheem's, bheem owns it. If it wasn't about Malli, bheem would have won. But that's the thing about their relationship! They challenge each other perfectly at each others levels with their different strengths and opposite personalities, while understanding each other's depth and temperament in a way no one else can)
- He is sheer chaos for the whole time that he's awake
- looks adorable sleeping
-will sleep anywhere (see: on top of books)
-graceful bastard
-overall cat okay?
-He really is bheem's little meow meow

Okay so I'm kind of young, right?
I grew up listening to "Mai Agar kahoon," and I've watched Om Shaanti Om but I don't remember it at all. It came out when I was 4.
I don't know why I haven't re watched the movie ever.
But I just had a talk with mom and apparently Mai Agar Kahoon is a romance song????
I always thought it was a double meaning manipulation song disguised as a romance song and the story must be that the guy is in some way betraying/lying to/manipulating the girl he is singing this to. But nope, mom says it's just a romance song.
But listen to the way its sung!
"Taareef ye bhi to, sach hai, kuch bhi nahi" (Even all praise for you, it's true, is not enough/is nothing)
But the way its sung, it sounds like
"Taareef ye bhi to, sach hai kuch bhi nahi" (even with all this praise for you, nothing from what I'm saying is true)
And then the general vibe and the beginning melody of the song has always sounded more intense, tense and ominous to me than romantic
Anyone? Am I being weird or do you see it?
I have thought it was a manipulative song since I was a kid, help???

RRR Spoiler Review
Tumblr media
Things I liked
Ok full disclosure tho, this is a lot of things, probably more than the things I'm actually going to list here
One of the first things I need to point out is how they kept romance in the background. I loved this because so many movies, especially in Indian film industries, try so hard to make a romantic plot more important than it is and for once they made a movie completely about the friendship shared between two men
Obviously there was some romance, and after all the hype around Alia Bhatt (Seetha) x Ram Charan (Alluri Rama Raju), NTR Jr. (Komuram Bheem) and Olivia Morris (Jennifer/Jenny) honestly just stole the screen.
Do we even need to talk about Ram playing matchmaker for Bheem and Jenny because AHHHHHHH I loved every moment of it
Back to their friendship, the character arc was so well done between the love to hate and then back to love thing.
Now I'm j going to talk about Bheem for a moment: damn. The last movies I saw of NTR Jr. were like Badshah and Jai Lava Kusa and though I liked both of them, it's been a long time and I wasn't rly sure what to expect. Man came on the screen tho and left with all our hearts that's j how it be. His commitment to Malli, commitment to his friendship, and overall pure innocence won me over so quickly. He truly was the water to this movie
And obviously RRR isn't RRR without the fire. Ram Charan. This might annoy some ppl but tbh I wasn't a fan of him before the movie, maybe that was also because I haven't seen many of his movies. RRR tho, it changed things. Yes, he was absolutely the fire of the movie, but even when he seemed like an ass, he absolutely had his reasons and ends up doing the right thing which I think is something I can really appreciate. How often in Tollywood do we see a protagonist temporarily be the bad guy just to get on the good side later in a bigger way than he originally thought he would. Tbh also his playful side in the movie. Everytime he pushed Bheem to Jenny just made me love his character more. I think overall he was the pragmatism to Bheem's innocence but the special thing about them is when they were around each other, Bheem's innocence rubbed off on Ram so much and it showed.
Ajay Devgan's role: tbh I was kind of skeptical about Bollywood actors/actresses crossing over into the south and it was justified in a few ways which I'll get into later but Ajay honestly made it work and he did it so well. Every line he said brought his character to life and took his mission into the hearts of the viewers and every character around him.
Speaking of Ajay tho, shout out to Shriya Saran bc she once again reminded me why she's one of my favorite Telugu actresses.
And of course, we're not getting anywhere with an RRR review without a shout out to it's amazing music. MM Keeravani garu knew exactly what he was doing and it shows. Of course another special thing was we were left with another song by Seetharama Sastry Garu. My favorite song award is honestly a three way tie probably between Dosti, Komuram Bheemudo, and Ethara Jenda, but Janani, Naatu, and Ramam Raghavam are really really high up there.
Dosti- please Vedala Hemachandra, Sirivennela Seetharama Sastry, and MM Keeravani on one song is dream come true
Also, the visuals were amazing
Now the dislikes
Yeah so I already said I had issues with Bollywood actor/actress entry into the south and in this movie that manifested itself as Alia Bhatt. To be honest it seemed like she was trying too hard and her role was so small so idek why it was so advertised. I'd say she had one major scene when she met Bheem but other than that there was really nothing.
Low-key was kind of hard to believe that two people could be best friends for so long with absolutely no knowledge of their true identities. Bheem I get cuz he had his alter-ego but Ram was just there and it's weird that Bheem didn't find out his true identity sooner. I guess that could just be marked up to movie logic tho and we could call it a day
Overall rating: 9.0/10
Definitely want to watch it again and imo RRR >>>> Baahubali but maybe that's j me liking Indian nationalists fighting back British raj or honestly just any oppressed group fighting back against their oppressors (shout out to The Kashmir Files 10/10 should watch)

“You said it was an emergency.”
Bheem lets out an impatient sigh as he keeps the door of his apartment open. “What does it look like to you?”
“A toddler,” Ram replies, his gaze continuously wandering from Malli’s tiny figure to the giant standing beside her. When she’s not trying to hide her face she’s peeking at him with her dark, wide eyes, squeezing Bheem’s leg so hard she resembles a barnacle glued to an underwater rock.
“Well, there’s not a big difference,” Bheem groans, reconsidering his life decisions for the hundredth time in the last few hours.
Ram doesn’t even flinch. “Where’s Loki?”
“Business trip,” Bheem explains, “but the babysitter didn’t show up. She was desperate for help and asked me to take care of Malli until she comes back, tonight.”
“I still don’t see why I’m here,” Ram replies with a confused frown.
Bheem takes a short pause before answering. “I need you to stay with her while I get a few things.”
The sudden realization of what’s really going on turns Ram’s face into the textbook definition of shock and terror - the same state Bheem’s going through the entire morning. “What things?!”
“Oh, I don’t know... age-appropriate food, maybe?” Bheem struggles to control his urge to punch him, out of sheer frustration. “Orange juice? Milk and Parle-G? Right now all I have is leftover chilli chicken.”
“Why can’t you take her?”
“She likes to go ‘exploring’ if you’re not paying full attention to her,” Bheem sighs again, exhausted: shopping for groceries with an infant in tow is something he doesn’t have enough strength for, not today. “Listen, she’s got her Happy Animals coloring book and crayons. Just make sure she stays alive for half an hour… please?!”
With Malli still clinging to Bheem’s leg, Ram is not sure this is an ideal solution but he doesn’t have much of a choice in the matter; besides, Bheem is giving him his best puppy-dog eyes expression, a technique he’s skillfully mastered to perfection. “Fine,” Ram grumbles in a low tone.
Bheem finally relaxes and smiles, gently patting the girl’s head; she stares at him, scared and wary of the brooding man in front of her, but Bheem nods and smiles for a second time. “Ram is our friend, it’s okay.”
A solid minute passes before Malli decides to let go of his trousers to raise a tiny hand towards Ram, who in return seems equally hesitant to take it and moves a cautious step forward only when Bheem is ready to leave. “I’ll be back in forty-five minutes, max.”
Ram is tempted to follow along but forces himself to remain calm: not even his extensive training could prepare him to embark on such a hazardous mission. He then closes the door and puffs, struggling to find the right words to speak to a child.
“Sooooo… you like… animals?”

It takes Bheem exactly twenty-seven minutes to run to the nearest grocery shop, grab some food and run back to his apartment; an easier task than expected, because once his mind clears a bit he remembers he used to love rice kheer, potatoes, roasted vegetables and mango dhal as a child. The fact that they’re also relatively easy to cook makes him fill his cart at superhuman speed and rush to the cashier, his heart pounding in his chest.
When he walks into the living room the first thing he notices is an unnerving silence, then Malli’s high-pitched voice echoes from the kitchen. “Blue.”
She’s sitting on a pile of cushions on a chair, her bare feet dangling up and down, and she’s pointing at the image of a silly faced horse in her coloring book - because she’s not the one doing the actual coloring.
“Brown,” suggests Ram.
“Blue.”
“Horses are not—”
“BLUE,” she cuts him off, resolute.
“Alright, alright. What do I know about horses, after all,” Ram laughs and picks up the blue crayon, now convinced that arguing with a toddler is - indeed - useless.
Bheem puts the shopping bags on the counter, amazed by the unusual event he’s witnessing: even though Ram can be one of the most dangerous men in the world when he’s holding a gun, he’s letting a two-year-old girl boss him around without batting an eye. “Are you two getting along well?”
Malli sees him and a split second later she’s climbing off the chair. “Anna!!” she shrieks, running towards him.
Bheem scoops her up to holds her in his arms while Ram stands awkwardly, the crayon still between his fingers. “I was… uhm, she’s still alive, see?!”
“I’m impressed,” Bheem replies, “and if I had to guess I’d say you were having fun.”
“Pfft, as if,” Ram shakes his head in denial while he lets the blue pencil fall on top of all the others, scattered on the table. “Have you got your age-appropriate food?!”
Bheem nods and Ram rolls his eyes in response. “Thank goodness,” he mutters, grabbing his jacket; Malli whines and squirms to let Bheem know she wants him to put her down, so that she can tug at Ram’s trousers with both hands.
Ram shrugs. “I’m sorry, kid, I have to go. I was only filling in for the one who’s in charge.”
“Actually,” Bheem jumps in, “it’s lunch time but lunch is not ready. How about you two keep on doing... whatever it was you were doing, and I cook us something? Potato soup is okay?”
The small girl doesn’t really answer but judging by the way she’s hugging Ram’s leg she’s not ready to exchange goodbyes yet, and Bheem smiles to himself. “I take that as a yes.”
Malli raises her big eyes to beg of her new friend to stay a little longer. “Did you learn this from him, huh?!” Ram asks when Malli drags him back to the kitchen table and he’s forced to admit he fell for the same puppy-dog trick twice.
He turns to Bheem, whispering: “I swear... a single word about this with anyone and you’re a dead man.”
