Measurement мethods: Wheatstone Bridge, Murray Bridge, Hilborn/Graff Bridge, Kupfmüller Bridge.
AC measurements are useful for localizing core breaks. This is best accomplished for shielded cables by measuring each core's capacitance relative to the shield. Knowing the core capacitance C-linear, the length of the broken core can be calculated using the formula: Lpaire = Ccore-shield/C per length
Tumblr media
When measuring a broken circuit's core capacitance, the cores of the other circuits in the cable bundle are connected to each other and to a reliably grounded shield. If the capacitance measurement results of both cores are the same, they are broken in the same place. Different values indicate a break in only one core and in the one with the lower capacitance. The distance to the breakage point is calculated by the formula Lpaire = Ccore-shield/C per length, where Ccore-shield and C per length are the measured and the linear capacitance of the core.
Tumblr media
It's crucial to remember. Defects in the cable shield have a significant influence on the measurement result. With the help of the above scheme, it is possible to determine the cable screen breakage place. For this purpose, the screen is disconnected from the grounding. Its capacitance relative to the ground is measured on both sides. The breakage place is calculated based on the ratio of the results of these measurements and the cable length (if it is unknown, it is necessary to use measurements for any pair of cores at constant current). The distance to the break is determined approximately - based on the measured capacitance of the shield and its capacitance (it is estimated as 0.083 of the core capacitance relative to the shield).
Tumblr media
If the cable is not shielded, the distance to the break can be determined by measuring conductor pair capacitance. However, the Wheatstone bridge circuit does not provide sufficient accuracy. However, even in the case of DC measurements, the Wheatstone scheme is rarely used for fault location.
Tumblr media
The Murray Bridge is often preferred because it allows measuring resistance differences between two arms. Thus, for example, the asymmetry at direct current is measured, which is evaluated by the relative value of the resistance difference between the conductors. From the figure, it can be clearly seen that this will be determined using the Murray Bridge. The twisted pair asymmetry at alternating current is measured in the same way.
Tumblr media
The same property of the Murray Bridge is also used to localize several other faults. The most common are low insulation resistance, and one of the cores shorted. During measurements, the unknown values of the defect resistance RF and shield resistance Rshield are included in both arms of the bridge, so they are mutually compensated, and their value does not play a role.
Tumblr media
At alternating current, the location of a break in one of the pair conductors can be localized with the Murray Bridge much more accurately than the Wheatstone Bridge. Moreover, in this case, the information about the cable core capacitance is not needed - the ratio of capacitances C1 and C2 will indicate the ratio of the distance to the defect to the length of the entire pair.
The measurement scheme for localization of the place with low insulation resistance between the conductors of one pair is more complicated. Here too, the compensation effect of unknown values is used.
Tumblr media
In all DC measurement schemes for Murray Bridge, an additional conductor is used in addition to the core with the defect to be localized. It can only be a core of the same pair or one of the free pairs in the same cable because it is essential that the RDTS (resistance of the additional core) is equal to the sum of the resistances RDTF+RSTF for the defective core. Since there is always the possibility of a defect in one core due to poor contact at the splice point of two cable sections, one can only be partially sure of the measurement accuracy.
Tumblr media
The Hilborn/Graf Bridge measurement circuit can overcome this drawback. As can be seen from the figure, although the circuit is based on two additional conductors, the contribution of their resistance can be minimized if the ratio R3+R4 >= RDTS is satisfied. Like the Murray Bridge, the Hilborn/Graf bridge is also suitable for localizing the reduced insulation resistance of one or two conductors.
The Hilborn/Graph bridge has other advantages - it is the only way to locate a fault in a cable where all conductors are shorted. Due to the insensitivity to the resistance value of the additional conductors, not only the conductors of the cable in which the fault is to be located but also two other conductors (either a pair of conductors from another cable or a pair of any other conductors) can be used for localization. It is this property of the Hilborn/Graph bridge that ensures a successful search for the place in the cable where all its cores have a low insulation resistance (such a defect occurs, for example, as a result of cores fusion during a lightning strike or a strong short circuit of a cable with paper insulation of cores).
Tumblr media
An additional pair of conductors is only sometimes available. A second parallel cable may not be available, and over long distances, it is not economical to run external conductors. This problem is solved by the Kupfmuller bridge measuring circuit: it allows you to do without additional conductors by performing two measurements on an open and a closed circuit. Although the Kupfmuller method imposes restrictions on the parameters of the measuring circuit elements, it is sometimes the last hope - some defects of this kind cannot be localized even with the help of an OTDR because of their "inexpressibility".
Accepted notations
In most cable fault locators, the following intuitive and convenient symbols are used to designate the lengths of the various cable sections with localizable faults, which were chosen for the figures in this article:
DTS = Distance To Strap (distance from the device connection point to the installation point of the jumper at the far end);
DTF = Distance To Fault (distance from the device connection point to the pair fault);
STF = Strap To Fault (distance from the damage point to the place of installation of the jumper at the far end of the pair);
DTE = Distance To End (distance from the device connection point to the twisted pair end);
ETF = End To Fault (distance from the fault location to the cable line end farthest from the device).

Investing in crypto? Look out for these red flags of frauds, recommends US SEC
(MINT) - With investment in cryptocurrency becoming a rage with time, the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) recently issued a fresh investor alert against investment scams related to digital assets and cryptocurrency.
“Digital assets” include crypto-currencies, coins, and tokens such as those offered in so-called initial coin offerings (ICOs).
SEC, in its latest alert, highlights, “Fraudsters continue to exploit the rising popularity of digital assets to lure retail investors into scams, often leading to devastating losses.”
It also stated, “Investors may be less skeptical of investment opportunities that involve something new or ‘cutting-edge,’ or may get caught up in the fear of missing out (FOMO).”
This, in order to help investors stay in the clear, the SEC suggests digital asset investors understand and evaluate the risks in addition to looking out for warning signs for a possible scam.
When considering an investment opportunity, SEC recommends to be cautious if you spot any of these red flags of fraud:
- “Guaranteed” high investment returns: Promises of high investment returns with little or no risk are a classic warning sign of fraud. Fraudsters may post fabricated historical returns on their websites showing high investment returns.
-Unlicensed/unregistered sellers: Unlicensed, unregistered sellers commit much of the securities fraud targeting retail investors in the U.S. Check out the background (including license and registration status) of anyone offering you an investment in securities using the search tool on Investor.gov.
-Skyrocketing account values: Depictions of investment accounts rapidly increasing in value and providing large returns are often fake. This is a tactic fraudsters use to entice investors with the prospect of great wealth.
-Sounds too good to be true: If an investment “opportunity” sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Remember that the potential for high investment returns usually involves high risk.
-Fake Testimonials: Also, never rely solely on testimonials in making an investment decision. Fraudsters sometimes pay people – for example, actors to pose as ordinary people turned millionaires, social media influencers, and celebrities – to tout an investment on social media or in a video.
The SEC’s Office of Investor Education and Advocacy (OIEA) and Division of Enforcement’s Retail Strategy Task Force (RSTF) also suggested investors to verify that the individuals and firms offering an investment in securities are licensed/registered using the search tool on Investor.gov before handing over their money to them.
Before you hand over your money, verify that the individuals and firms offering an investment in securities are licensed/registered using the search tool on Investor.gov.
The SEC also highlighted BitConnect’s $2-billion scam that resulted in huge losses for the retail investors. “The platform allegedly paid investor withdrawals out of incoming investor funds and did not trade investors’ Bitcoin consistent with its representations, leading the platform to collapse and investors to lose massive amounts of money,” the alert stated.
Meanwhile, a selloff in cryptocurrencies widened on Tuesday, with bitcoin weakening nearly 4% while smaller rival ether fell more than 6%.
The world's biggest and best-known cryptocurrency weakened 4% to $50,516, having risen to a mid-May high above $52,000 earlier, in Asian trading.
Ether, the coin linked to the ethereum blockchain network, fell more than 6% to $3,666.

You have all the moves and wits. But, remember that school life isn’t a binary spectrum of “guys, MAPEH na!” or “guys, Electronis na!” There’s also, “Guys, boycott na tayo!”
To Andrew,
Boy, you grind studies and contests too hard. Loosen up, lean back and relax. Nevertheless, thank you for those stuff you’ve shared with me especially those you’ve shared during kopyahan times. To the world’s next Stephen Hawking, Godbless!
To Kenneth,
Thank you for being a fun guy to be with. I’m wondering how are you with ********? Kidding hehe. Anyways, continue being a young director, you can do it!
To Ronnie,
Your white hair’s a laughingstock, to be honest. I’d always remember you as the guy who doesn’t give a damn about time despite having the responsibility of taking the class’ attendance early in the morning. To the many next times, always learn to be on time.
To Laurence,
Studies isn’t just about being on top. It’s also learning to have fun amidst pressure. Also, thank you for being a straightforward person to all of us.

Ex-Chillver! Lezzgo back to the days when we’re so freaking chill in silver, teh. I’d love to go back huhu. Anyways, continue reaching for the stars and enhancing that voice of yours.
To Maria,
These past weeks was hard on us. But, we talked it out and I told you nothing beats a decent talk (multiple 😛 for u) Anyways, continue being a great girl you already are, and always remember that people can actually understand you. You’re not alone in this world, I’m here ready to listen to you.
To Karen,
You’re a quiet person. I know you have a lot of ideas to share and stories to say. Don’t be afraid to interact with other persons also.
To Julia,
The resident skinny na nga, maliit pa girl hehe. I’ve seen you dance and stuff. I could say that continue being a dancer, and have a time for yourself. Go eat buffets out there, and get some weight! HAHA

You have the most annoying/contagious laugh of all. One burst of laughter from you and you would cause some of us to laugh or just smirk. Stay being a joyful and plump one.
To Salve,
Rumors had it that you’re drowning in your own sadness, eventually, falling into “that” abyss everyone’s having a hard escaping from. Teh, don’t be afraid to open up to your parents and friends. Transparency’s the only thing we need when we’re experiencing that. Godbless
To Christelle,
Hoy, words are not enough to describe how great of a writer you are. I’m always awed by how poetic you are. Continue being a great writer!
To Kristel,
Grade 7’s taong gubat to Grade 10’s pinatay sa film. All I can say is, stop pretending you know everything and stop joining fights you’re not part of. That’s all, Godbless!

Report: ICO Funding Stumbles in Q3, Regulation a Primary Factor
A recent report details just how weak initial coin offering (ICO) fundraising is becoming amidst the persisting 2018 crypto bear market, with Q3 being the least successful fundraising quarter for ICOs so far this year.
ICO Fundraising Drops Sharply in Q3
The report, which was conducted by independent research firm, ICORating, notes that a total of just over $1.8 billion was raised by a total of 597 ICO projects in Q3 2018, down significantly from the over $8.3 billion that was raised in Q2 2018.
Earlier this year, investors were clamoring to throw money into just about any ICO project that asked for it, but the persisting bear market and poor performance of tokens has led to increased fundraising difficulty, with 57% of ICO projects not being able to raise more than $100,000 USD.
Although most ICO tokens that are available for trading have had a terrible year, the report also explains that only 4% of ICO tokens have actually been listed on exchanges, making them an incredibly illiquid and risky investment.
Related Reading: German Regulator Advises Investors to “Keep Their Hands Off” ICOs
Factors Behind ICO Fundraising Drop
The report specifically notes that there are multiple primary factors contributing to the drop in ICO fundraising, including the high frequency of scams and fraud, uncertainty regarding regulation, a decline in value of some of the most hyped ICO products from earlier this year, and a general disappointment in the state of the markets.
A lack of transparency within many projects is one source of fear for investors, as it leads to increased uncertainty regarding how trustworthy the team leading the project is. The fear that stems from a lack of transparency in the industry is due to the amount of news regarding ICO-related exit scams.
“The market in Q3 shows signs of overall disappointment in traditional ICOs as a means of venture financing… The key problem with ICOs is that a vast number of them are scams or scam-like projects…”
Furthermore, regulatory uncertainty regarding the ICO industry is a huge contributing factor behind the drop in fundraising, as it is likely that many of the tokens resulting from ICOs are in fact securities products.
The report discusses this factor, saying that “a vast number of them [ICOs] are scams or scam-like projects, and the fact that some tokens sold were actually securities, meaning that they violate U.S securities law, forcing the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to take action.”
Recently, the U.S. SEC released a report that said reducing ICO-related fraud is among their top priorities.
In the SEC’s annual 2018 enforcement report, the regulatory authority explained that the complex technological nature of ICOs makes them the perfect venue for scamming unsuspecting retail investors, and their international nature makes it difficult to enforce existing laws that are being violated by nefarious projects.
“Additionally, in partnership with the Division’s Cyber Unit and Microcap Fraud Task Force, as well as the Division of Corporation Finance’s Digital Asset Working Group, the RSTF has launched a lead-generation and referral initiative involving trading suspensions related to companies that purport to be in the cryptocurrency and distributed ledger technology space,” the SEC explained.
Although ICOs were a popular fundraising method in 2017 and early-2018, as regulations begin unfolding they may increasingly become an inefficient and legally dangerous way for projects to raise money.
