Weezer's cover album shenanigans reminded me of this sort of records, where a musician decides to play other people's songs. The best ones are usually those that do something intriguing with the originals. Bryan Ferry's These Foolsih Things does fit the bill, because he devours these tunes and makes them his own. However, an element of is-he-for-real is present in his treatment of the songs there, since you can't be sure about the degree of seriousness of his attempts. True, we can consider this to be his way of reading these pieces, yet you also notice something rarely present in the later works of both Bryan Ferry and Roxy Music. Yes, you observe a sense of humour, which might surprise us, since Ferry always has this suave persona. He might be ironic, true, but funny?

1972. Todos pal pub con las Abejas Hacen Miel, uno de esas bandas un poco más ocultas del pub rock británico. En “Highway Song”, una de las canciones de su único LP “Music Every Night” (1973), llevan ese trote boogie tan típicamente cervecero. Bees Make Honey eran Barry Richardson (voz, bajo), Deke O'Brien (guitarras), Mick Molloy (guitarra), Ruan O'Lochlainn (piano) y Bob "Cee" Siebenberg (batería). Éste último pasó a continuación a los exitosos Supertramp y O'Lochlainn formó Riff Raff junto a un jovencísimo Billy Bragg.

Bryan Ferry's follow-up to These Foolish Things repeated the formula of its predecessor, i.e. it consisted of covers, although he did conclude the album with an original song of his. Nonetheless, the LP carrie on with his modus operandi of making other people's songs his own. His early detached persona that cracks under the emotions displayed itself immensely on it once again, but the choice of the tunes went into other genres. Another Time, Another Place emphasized soul and country, which can be heard on the link that shows Mr. Ferry interpreting one of the most famous hits by Sam Cooke. Ferry does not sound as confident as Mr. Cooke, yet that is the point – Ferry's best work speaks from a position of someone who fakes his personality, so it should not surprise us he also applies this principe to the compositions he only performs.

Bryan Ferry's selection of covers consists of, hm, basically everyone from Robert Palmer to The Beatles. His eclectism regarding his choices should not shock us, it got already established with his solo debut These Foolish Things. He mixes the modern tunes with the old composition, i.e. you can find Elvis, McCartney, Carole King and The Great American Songbook on it. Moreover, while he applies his disengaged persona on all of them, we should really be careful about calling him detached on this record. The truth remains that he does let his emotions show on these songs. Yes, he does not over-emote, he's more or less playing someone who pretends not to care, but that mask only hides his true pain that consumes him.
