~ Hide And Seek ~

Breathing frantically, Robert "Robbie" Scott ran through the woods that were as familiar to him as the back of his hand. How many times had he been out here? How many times had he run along these paths? But this time everything was different.

He didn't have much time. At any moment she would come for him. At any moment he would be hunted down and caught if he didn't find a place to hide quickly enough.

His heart skipped a beat when he heard her call. He had to hurry! He had to find a hole in a tree as quickly as possible or climb one of the trees or –

A startled scream escaped the young Scotsman when a hand suddenly reached out of a bush right next to him and he was pulled into the middle of the bushes.

He wanted to scream further and call for help, but he didn't get the chance because the same hand that had pulled him into the bushes quickly pressed down on his mouth and silenced him.

"Shhh! Be quiet, a bhràthair!"

That voice.

Robbie, who was now sitting on his knees on the ground, turned his head to see who was sitting behind him, covering his mouth.

It was his brother. The older Scotsman kept his eyes fixed on the path Robbie had been walking on until a moment ago. His eyes were wide with fear.

Robbie made a few muffled sounds and Scotty's hand tightened on it.

"Shh!" he hissed again and it wasn't until Robbie himself heard the approaching footsteps that he became as quiet as a mouse.

"Come out, come out, wherever ye are," a female voice rang out, in a singsong.

Robbie's blood froze in his veins and he closed his eyes. He couldn't let her find them! Therefore he had to be quiet.

His heart was pounding in his throat as the footsteps came closer and closer.

"I'll find ye. Ye cannae get away from me."

Robbie pressed himself as close to Scotty as he could. He just wanted to know that his big brother was with him. And Scotty only held him tighter.

The two brothers sat trembling in their hiding place and it was only when the footsteps slowly moved away from them that they both dared to relax a little.

Scotty finally dropped his hand and Robbie sighed with relief. They had made it. They were safe for now!

Smiling, the two looked at each other and sent a silent prayer to the heavens, however, suddenly someone jumped through the bushes and grabbed them both by their shoulders.

"Gotcha!"

Scotty and Robbie both cried out in shock, while their friend Margory laughed triumphantly.

"Ha, ha, ha! I'm just the best at this game!"

Scotty just sighed and shrugged his shoulders.

"At least we tried."

"Aye. Thanks for yer help, Monty. Ye tried to save me."

Robbie wrapped his arms around his big brother and he hugged him tightly.

"Always."

25. Sea of Dunes

“This is really where ye live.”

Scotty grinned and looked over at his brother on horseback next to him.

“Aye,” Scotty replied with a happy sigh.

“It’s so… so empty,” Robbie said.

They had ridden beyond the ranch towards the hills to the north.

“Of people I mean,” Robbie said quickly. “So much space compared to Aberdeen.”

“Aye, I had enough of people in London,” Scotty said with a frown. “And when I came to the States, the eastern cities were all the same. I had to go further.” He looked at Robbie and shook his head. “It was too tempting to go back, and I didn’t want ye harmed.”

“I wish ye had,” Robbie said softly. “I didn’t even know where to begin searching for ye after the MacLeods were killed.”

“I missed ye everyday,” Scotty said, blinking back the prick of tears in his eyes.

“Aye, same bhràthair.” Robbie actually wiped across his eyes.

“It’s good here,” Scotty said, swallowing back more emotions. “Jim runs an excellent ranch and he’s a dear friend. Everyone here is. We’re a bit like a family I suppose.” Scotty gave a soft chuckle. He glanced over and saw a frown on his brother’s face.

“Hey- I didn’t mean—”

“I know,” Robbie said. “I know what ye meant.”

“Robbie, if I had known, I’d have been back in an instant,” Scotty said earnestly. “I made that deal to save your life. It was the hardest choice I ever made.”

“I know,” Robbie said with a sigh. “And I appreciate what ye did. But— it’s hard to not think ye moved on, when ye talk about yer friends here as family.”

“Never! I meant what I said; I thought about ye everyday!”

“I know and I missed ye. I’m sorry—”

“No, I'm sorry for saying it that way and making ye think that.” Scotty looked at Robbie, chagrined.

Robbie nodded, then looked across the land in front of them again, grasses gently waving in the breeze.

“It’s beautiful here. Not like Scotland, but a different beauty,” said Robbie.

“Aye,” Scotty agreed, glad to move on from their previous conversation. “We can turn here and go towards the canyon. Ride along it for a bit before we head back.”

“Lead the way,” Robbie smiled.

“We had a shoot out at the canyon last summer. It was after we found Jaylah and went looking for her family…”

“The poor lass,” Robbie said as Scotty finished telling him how Jaylah had ended up on the ranch.

“It’s been quite a year actually,” Scotty said. “We had a man come who robbed us and then tried to take the ranch by force. He’s locked up now and half his gang hanged.”

“I thought maybe ye’d escaped all our youthful misadventures.” Robbie looked at his brother with wide eyes.

“I thought so too.”

“Does everyone who comes here have some terrible secret?” Robbie asked lightly.

“Well,” Scotty said slowly. “Most of us ended up here running from something. Don’t expect everyone to go telling their tales though.”

Robbie nodded.

“This land just goes on and on,” he said. “Those grasses waving remind me of the sea as I crossed it. I just can’t believe how open it is.”

“I miss all of Scotland’s greenery, but I do love it here,” Scotty told him. “Len asked me once why I never referred to it as home, but it was because of ye. Now, it really is home. And I hope ye’ll think so too at some point.”

“Knowing ye’re alive…” Robbie let out a happy sigh. “I could maybe make it here. It’s very different though…” Robbie cleared his throat.

“Here.” Scotty reached back to one of his saddle bags and pulled out a bottle. He grinned as he held it across to his brother. “Help keep the dust down.”

Robbie laughed as he took the bottle of amber liquid. “Ye brought whiskey?”

“Celebrating getting to show ye around,” Scotty blushed.

Robbie took a drink and handed the bottle back. Scotty had his own drink and put it back in the bag.

“So,” Scotty began with a sly look in his eyes, “did ye break any hearts coming here?”

“Nae,” Robbie laughed. “Nobody wants to get close to an old conman.”

“Ye aren’t old lad,” Scotty chuckled. “And ye gave up the unlawful life. There wasn’t anyone?”

Robbie sighed and for a moment Scotty regretted asking.

“There was a lass for a while.” Robbie shook his head. “I thought maybe… It didn’t work out. How did ye and Dr. McCoy end up together?”

Scotty huffed out a laugh. “We were each circling the other. I thought he and Christine were together. It took that bloody thief coming here for us to realize.” Scotty lowered his voice. “I didn’t tell ye this— but I think Len was jealous of him.”

“He doesn’t seem the type,” Robbie said in surprise.

“Aye, and there wasn’t anything to be jealous of. We turn here,” Scotty said. “That’ll take us back to the ranch.”

“This has been such a nice ride,” said Robbie. “I’m so glad Dr. McCoy wrote to me.”

“Aye, I am too.”

The brothers smiled at each other and kept riding.

12. “I can’t stand seeing you like this.”

Montgomery "Scotty" Scott didn't know where he was or how he had gotten to this place. It was a dark and empty place and his body was floating in the center of it. Scotty had no control over what was happening to him. And that made him feel just awful.

All the Scotsman knew was that he was freezing and that he just wanted to sleep. It was really strange because actually, Scotty thought to himself, it felt like his body had been asleep for a long time. But his mind just couldn't rest.

He was incredibly exhausted, but something inside him was vehemently resisting finally switching off his mind.

Scotty wasn't sure exactly what it was. Maybe it was the urge to find out what had happened to him? Maybe he wanted to know where he was? Or perhaps it was the voice that kept coming to his ears, somehow making its way through the darkness.

Scotty knew it. It was incredibly familiar, but he just didn't know who it belonged to.

'Hey, Monty. It's me again.'

It was a warm and soft voice. Scotty found it incredibly pleasant, because it managed to make him feel at least a little more secure and better.

The voice asked him many questions. How he was feeling today. If he was in pain. How much longer he intended to sleep. And the Scotsman would have loved to answer, but his body simply wasn't strong enough for that.

'I ... thought ye might like to hear a few articles about the latest car models. Mum said that it's completely crazy after ... everything that's happened, but I know ye better. Ye are and always will be a car freak.'

Was he? Was Montgomery Scott interested in cars?

A strange shiver went through his body as an image appeared before his inner eye.

He was sitting at the wheel of a car and almost pressing the accelerator pedal to the floor. Wild cries of joy escaped his mouth and he laughed, feeling freer than ever before. Sitting next to him was another person who didn't seem quite as enthusiastic as he was, but was still smiling gently.

'I'll ... just read ye a bit, yeah? A lot has happened in the last few months.'

The warm voice began to read, but with each paragraph it broke more and more until finally only sobbing could be heard. It filled Scotty's heart with sorrow to hear it.

'I'm sorry, Monty. I-I cannae do this. Why was I so stupid? Why didn't I stop ye from taking part in that stupid street race?'

More images appeared in front of Scotty.

He saw the needle on the speedometer rise faster and faster. The feeling of freedom grew bigger and bigger and he screamed with happiness, but suddenly he lost control. There was that tree. And then ... there was nothing.

'Ye're in a coma because I didn't help ye. I cannae stand seeing ye like this. If only I'd seen how bad ye've really been since Dad died. If I had understood that ye were only tuning cars and racing because ye couldn't cope with the situation, I would have–"

The voice. The person who had been in the car with him. It was Robbie. It was Scotty's little brother. The Scotsman's heart broke at this realization. How had he not realized it sooner? How had he not seen that the person visiting him every single day was his poor, wee brother?

'Why the hell don't ye just wake up? I just want to tell ye that ... I'm sorry!'

Robbie. He blamed himself for something that wasn't his fault. He blamed himself for something Scotty had messed up. It just wasn't right. It wasn't fair!

And as hard as it was for him, as much as he longed for sleep and rest, Scotty realized in that moment that he had to keep on fighting. He had to try to wake up. For his brother. No matter how long it took, he wouldn't give up. Never.

Scotty couldn’t help singing quietly as he worked. Everything in the world felt so light. He had love and friends. And he had his brother back. What more could he ever want?

A smile grew across his face as his brother came around the corner.

“Robbie!” he said happily. “Come to help?” Scotty held up a tool.

Robbie smiled just a little. “No,” he replied.

Scotty’s smile faded a bit at the worried note in Robbie’s voice.

“I came to talk to you,” Robbie said.

“About what?” Scotty asked, a cold chill running down his spine.

Robbie let out a sigh, as he tried to find the right words.

“Yer leaving?” Scotty said in surprise as he read the look on Robbie’s face. “Ye cannae do that!” He dropped the tools from his hands and stepped over to his brother. “I just got ye back! Ye cannae go!”

“Monty, I—”

“Dinnae do this to me bhràthair! I will nae hear it!”

“Monty!”

But Scotty had gone, walking quickly away to hide the tears that threatened to fall. His brother, whom he had been forced to leave so long ago for his own protection, now wanted to leave him? After they had been reunited by Leonard’s efforts after so long. Scotty’s chest tightened and ached, and his eyes burned.

Leonard found him.

“Monty,” the doctor said gently.

Scotty was hunched over the table in their cabin, eyeing the bottle of whiskey he had set in front of himself. Leonard sighed as he sat across from Scotty and lifted up the bottle.

“How much have you had?” he asked quietly.

“None,” Scotty replied with a shake of his head.

“Good,” Leonard muttered. “Don’t you find some irony in running away from Robbie after saying you don’t want him to leave?” he asked.

Scotty whipped his head up to look at Leonard.

“It’s hard for him too, you know darlin’. And—”

“And I didnae listen to him,” Scotty said, dropping his head towards the table again. A loud sigh sounded from Scotty.

“Talk to him,” Leonard said. He reached across the table and squeezed Scotty’s hand.

Scotty sat at the table a while longer after Leonard had left. He’d thought deeply about his brother and his leaving the ranch. At least now they would be able to write to each other, even if it would be long spells between letters.

Slowly he got up and went to find Robbie. He had acted poorly and owed it to Robbie to apologize and listen.

He found his brother walking along the creek.

“Oi, Robbie,” he called.

Robbie stopped and turned. Scotty couldn’t read his expression, the sun was behind him, shadowing his face.

“I- I’m sorry,” Scotty said as he closed the distance between them. “I just- it’s been so good to have ye back. The thought of ye going away…I just… but if it’s what ye need, then ye must do it. And we’ll write to each other now; it’ll be ok.”

“I’m not going back to Scotland Monty.”

“Ye’ve all right to be— what?” Scotty looked up and stared over at his brother.

Robbie gently smiled. “I cannae stand to lose ye again either. And ye’ve got a whole life here.” Robbie lifted a hand and gestured at the ranch. “I will miss home, but there’s nothing there for me like there is here.” Robbie set his hand on Scotty’s shoulder.

“But, this isnae the life for me,” Robbie continued. “I’m not cut out for this work; the cattle and the ranch and everything.”

“Then what are ye saying lad?” Scotty asked in confusion.

“There was a posting for a clerk at the post office. I’m thinking of trying for it. And if they take me, well, I’d probably be better off living in town.”

Scotty didn’t know what to say and simply looked at Robbie.

“So, aye, I’d be leaving the ranch, but I will nae go far bhràthair.”

Something heavy had been pressing down on Scotty and he didn’t realize it until it was suddenly gone. Now he was light. His brother would stay close.

“Oh lad!” He moved forward and hugged Robbie tightly. “I’m sorry I didn’t listen before.”

“I’m sorry I didn’t speak quicker,” Robbie said, holding Scotty just as tight.

“This I can do,” Scotty said when he released Robbie. “All will still be right in the world.”
