Hybes survival show 'runext' is so....questionable (Spoilers ahead)

First of all some of these trainees shouldn't even be here. The youngest is 12. She's japanese so her korean isn't very good and shes been consistently ranked lowly (i have nothing against Ena btw. i actually think shes could be a great main vocalist with more training) Its not just her. Two of the other trainees (one 16 and another 15) have only been training for under 3 months before this show. Why would they even let these girls compete? When they're going up against a 21 year old strong vocalist and another trainee that almost debuted with lesserafim? (ruka or haruka as shown in the lesserafim documentary)

Why? Because the 16 year old (wonhee) might be rigged to win. People are very upset about her and the discourse has become a little inappropriate. Her skills are lacking as you would expect from a 16 year old that's been training for 3 months and shes made mistakes on stage yet shes being given so much screentime and lines compared to other contestants. People are worried that hybe will debut her simply because of her looks. For this shes been brutally slandered online (she has also been well supported which only spurs the slandering more since they fear she might actually debut). Its clear her self confidence about this wasn't that strong to begin with and now (because hybe decided to put her on this show so damn early) shes being dragged online.

I also understand a 12 year old trainee isn't unheard of. Jihyo of twice began training at 8. however, this girl is being put on a survival show to DEBUT at the end...a sixth grader. And we all know how brutal these shows can get. This coming from hybe, one of the biggest labels of the industry. You didn't like them debuting Hyein of newjeans? Then you'll hate this show. (im also aware a 5 year old has debuted before but that doesn't mean we should be normalizing it!!!)

A more technical point to it being questionable is the given and taken and bad boy performances.

For given and taken: The lower ranked trainees were performing with the higher ranked ones but these teams were competing. A girl named Iroha from the lower rank team slipped and fell on a necklace. The lower rank team still won the performance. That's not necessarily a pity win in itself. (even though I strongly think it was since the other team had Jiwoo, the eldest trainee and the monster vocalist that was mentioned before who gave a near perfect performance.) What makes it obvious is that these teams were still ranked amongst themselves. And where did Iroha place? 2nd. Out of the 4 lower rank trainees on her team she placed 2nd after a fall.

For the bad boy performance: I really don't know what they were thinking here. Similarly, 3 trainees were performing the same song and were being divided into low, mid, and high ranks. Jiwoo was ranked low while another trainee, Jongeun, was ranked high. Now Jongeun gave a very well rounded performance but if you watch it you'll agree that both of her teammates outshined her. They frame it as a big surprise too. Because the whole time you're being shown Jiwoo being a great leader and having no problem lead the team to the best opening performance and then slaying. But then they hit us with her ranking as though she maybe was being a little too self assured and was given low because her abilities weren't all they were cracked up to be. That's how it feels. Except....she did amazing? She was right to be confident? It just felt mean spirited and in my opinion i think it's a stupid move to try and make her work harder or maybe shake her confidence. It just made no sense.

This is more of an opinion but I fear they are evil editing Yunah so she gets less votes because of how talented she is. I think Hybe wants the final lineup to be Jiwoo, Jeemin, Youngseo, Chanelle, Ruka, and Wonhee. The evil editing combined with them highlighting Jeemin and Yunah's little rivalry/friendship makes me feel like they want either one or the other to debut.

The last point is the setup of this show is god awful. Who came up with this ranking system? And why are all the songs absolutely shit for a survival show? Bad boy and given and taken are the only choices i really like. Attention felt like a hybe plug and while I liked the performance and that song, there's not much to display vocally. Its just a bunch of weird choices from weird people.

Jiwoo: 7 of Pentacles, Page of Cups, The Hierophant, Queen of Swords.

I see Jiwoo being savvy and calculated. She's planning about her artistic plans and career. She hasn't given up from what I got from the cards. Jiwoo seems to be someone that knows a lot about the business so she's playing her cards right. With the Hierophant I keep getting "traditional", so maybe she's gonna debut in the traditional way (like going through a company and all that) or meeting up with influential people.

Funa: 4 of Cups, 6 of Swords, Knight of Wands.

Funa seems to be going through bad times at the moment, she's feeling moody. Maybe her business thing she's doing isn't working out. Wouldn't be surprised if she was planning to travel/already is back in Japan (or traveling somewhere else).

Moa: The Devil, 2 of Wands rev, 5 of Swords rev, Page of Swords rev.

Something might bite her in the back, something she said or did. It may have come back to bite her (like if she said something in the heat of a moment and it's being used against her). I see her feeling stuck and unmotivated. Scammed even. She feels restricted and things aren't going her way.

Chanelle: 10 of Swords rev, Ace of Wands, King of Swords.

Chanelle seems to be picking herself up, recovering from trauma and issues, and most importantly turning into a new leaf. She's grown more and is maturing from what she was before. I see her being more stronger than ever.

Jeongeun:

The Empress, 2 of Swords, 7 of Pentacles rev.

Seems like Jeongeun seems to not making the best choices. She's stuck between two paths, wouldn't be surprised if it was related to the arts. She's worried if she has a stable fanbase.

Jihyun: 6 of Pentacles, Queen of Cups.

In a relationship? Well I see her feeling very safe and secured. She's fine, I don't see much happening with her.

Ruka: 4 of Swords rev, Ace of Wands, The Sun

She's longing to get active and busy, shes pretty very motivated and optimistic about what lies for her! Is probably spending her time with family.

Yewon: Queen of Cups, 6 of Pentacles (same cards as Jihyun huh).

I feel like she's still living with her parents, she's being supported and comfortable. In tune with emotions

Jeemin: Knight of Pentacles, The Tower.

Jeemin is working hard but fearing the worst thing could happen. She's overthinking a lot.

Hyewon: 5 of Cups, 4 of Pentacles.

Hyewon is going through sadness and heartbreak. Her energy is pretty closed up.

Youngseo is enjoying her youth but keeping a low profile.

Ena has lots of innovative ideas but they're all over the place, makes sense for her age. She just wants to have a lot of money lol.

i loved the performances from this episode. you can really tell that the girls do better in front of an audience.

Universe (vocal team A):

win deserved for jiwoo and yoona cuz they ate

jiwoo really stood out here. her stable axx vocals and the softness of her vocal tone just suits the song really well.

ik yoona said this song was out of her comfort zone but it was pretty well executed! she's really hard on herself but i'm glad she did well.

wonhee did improve a lot but she still needs work on her facial expressions cuz it do be looking a bit blank a lot of the time

jeongeun is one of my favs but she didn't stand out much for this stage which was a bit disappointing...

Spark (vocal team B):

chanelle and minju atee. i'm sad that these two didn't get what they deserved...

i do think chanelle's power fit this song the best

minju spiced it up! she's an all-rounder and just really good as per usual.

and seoyeon was a new gem from this stage! she did really well and it was like a new-found confidence shown here

yewon def could've used more confidence. i think she's been struggling with her confidence and her skills during runext...

Bang (dance team A):

yeongseo is expected like she just always gives every performance her all and her facial expressions are just something else

hyewon does well but i just feel like she's always missing the 1% from getting that 100% wow for me

ruka just didn't stand out... maybe it's the screen time or something but like she's of small stature + less variety of facial expressions so like yeah...

moa is another personal fav of mine. she's on the lacking side skill wise but her facials always just spices up the performance. she was a little invisible in this performance however...

iroha... idk where to start. i personally think she's a bit overrated. she was one of my top picks earlier in the show but she just makes a lot of mistakes... (some from her, some just pure accidents..) the one small mistake of her stumbling cuz of poor balance is HUGE considering it's a dance performance and it just kinda shows her lack of core strength to keep her grounded when dancing. i'm no expert and no hate on her but just a critical personal evaluation on her.

Tell Me (dance team B):

himena ate with the facials. she literally looked like a doll and executed this performance sooo well. i feel like she didn't shine that much in the earlier performances but she's def. shining a lot now!

jeemin: i lowkey didn't even recognize her at first glance. she's good as usual. tbh nothing more or less here from her...

jihyun is another of my personal picks. ik i have a lot. but she just did really great with the center of the dance break. i wouldn't be surprised if she led the creation of the choreographed part. it was well executed. i will say whoever dressed her umm needs to be called out cuz yeah it's the fashion style but they could've done her a lot better...

funa did so well and improved so much! her facial expressions were so cute and i feel like you could tell she has a lot more fun on stage with an audience.

moka is another personal fav of mine. she didn't stand out as much but her visual reminds me a lot of lachica simeez and her presence adds spice to the performance.

Elimination:

omg i'm so upset that moa got eliminated... i'll keep rooting for her to debut cuz ik a lot of people find her personality a bit annoying but you can't deny that she got the stage presence and the work ethic.

i lowkey figured that ruka would drop at some point just cuz she did lack the personal oomph that some other contestants had and she wasn't given a lot of screentime after the first ep.

i highkey figured that yewon would drop cuz i feel like the show lowkey put her in a bad spot after how iris was dropped. it wasn't as extreme as iris but when she was a leader and put herself first when she didn't have the immediate skill, i was sure that she would be eliminated pretty soon...

r u next is actually a worst case scenario survival show to me. This isnt even about my gripes with the final lineup but from a logistics standpoint.

The group is permanent. Meaning i’f have to wait a full 7 years to see any of my favorites as solosits. Maybe 5-6 if they started having solos during the middle/end of the groups contract. Me personally. Id LOVE to see yunah as a soloist. I have no idea is shed want to be in a group or not after ill-it. Now we wont know for another 7 years to know as opposed to 2 or 3.

popular trainees who didnt make the lineup would have a better chance of debuting. Since chanelle, jeemin, jiwoo, ruka etc are all under hybe. Theres less of a chance of that happening. Its not grasping at straws to say trainees who get MILLIONS of impressions a week are more likely to debut under their company sooner or have companies foamjng at the mouths to get them under their management. For RUNEXT We dont know when their trainee contracts expire. Or if a company will be willing to buy them out of their hybe contracts to expedite their debuts. Normally, mid to small sized companies would LOVE to debut their most popular trainee if they didnt make the winning lineup. But If hybe/the judges/ the voters couldnt see how valuable the trainees who were eliminated are, i find it very likely they will stay in hybe’s trainee dungeons. (with that being said, hybe debuts like 3 groups a year. Not even exaggerating. Which is VERY different from other companies. So i will HOPE it is more likely they COULd debut in another group under hybe because simply because hybe just blows through debuts and money like its nothing. However if they fumbled these girls now no telling what theyd do)

Yes she is quite upset and frustrated by it. She herself really thought she would make it further with the amount of popularity she had. However this is not the end for her. She will get a major opportunity coming for her. She will need some time to fully process it but she defiantly has offers :))

Thoughts on Round 2: DEATH MATCH

Attention (Surprisingly because I’m not a fan of the actually song.)

Given-Taken (I was really looking forward to this performance and I can’t lie, I was disappointed with their vocal performance.)

And to be honest, only Hyewon like, really caught my attention and stood out to me this round. I don’t know, I think even the trainees that did well, performed how I expected, so I wasn’t really wowed by their abilities this round.

So, starting out my Top 7 were Iroha, Wonhee, Hyewon, Jeemin, Haseul, Funa, and Jiwoo. And now, after seeing the first 2 rounds, my Top 6 would have to be (in no particular order)

Jiwoo, Yunah, Jeemin, Iroha, Hyewon, and Youngseo.

But I still have hopes for some of my other favorites, like Chanelle, Minju, Moka, Ruka, Funa, and Wonhee, to show more potential.

Yuisa would have been on my list of potentials, but unfortunately, she never stood out or rather didn’t have the chance to yet but, that’s competition for ya.

Side note, can we talk about the lack of no commentary versions of the performances! The Howling had Focused Cam and No Commentary versions and I-Land even had Commentated, No Commentary, and Focused Cam versions of the performances. So what’s happening here?

Maybe it’s because they are working with JBTC instead of Mnet, I don’t know, but I need no commentary versions, bruh. Like the camera cutting away from the performance just to show the judges or other trainee’s faces, or some type of flashback. And then the constant rewind they have to do because they cut away is just, ugh. I would like a version for me to be able to see the entire groups’ performance, at once, all together, no interrupts. Especially if you want people to be voting based on these performances. I need to be able to analyze!

Like, I know they have the Focused Cam views but those are from the rehearsals not the actual performances they did in front of the judges so, it’s just not the same.

Dream of You- I have no clue what the judges were talking about. This performance wasn’t everywhere or had too much going on. I actually really enjoyed it!

The Boys- Loved the intro, loved the dance break, it was a good performance visually. I was really looking forward to this song but, I don’t know why, but it just didn’t hit as hard as I was thinking it would.

4 Walls- Very pretty visually and loved the fan dance.

“Hip Hop” Choreo

Ok, I am extremely picky when it comes to k-pop trying to be hip hop. Not many can pull it off, especially when it comes to the girl groups. I always feel like they are trying too hard or they are trying to be something they are not. I personal think it has to do with the fact that, over there, when learning hip hop, there’s hip hop and then female hip hop. Where I’m from, it’s just hip hop. There is no differfination between boy and girl, it’s just one hip hop and you either got it or you don’t! I feel they simply just don’t teach the girls what and how they teach the boys. Maybe, because they like femine and cutesy concepts more for their females, over there. I don’t know. This is just my take and opinion on this topic. Long story short I was expecting disappointment with these performances and that is what I got so,

Now with that being said there was one trainee who caught my attention,

Youngseo. I feel like this was the first time since the first round she has stood out and was able to be focused on. Even though, her voice was a bit light for “Money.” I loved how she sang her part.

As for eliminations

With Iris I feel she mainly just wanted to be a backup dancer and if that’s the case I don’t understand why she was trying to be an idol, which requires vocal ability. And the way she just basically gave up…

But I was a little sad to see Haseul leave but like Yuisa she never really stood out or at least didn’t get the opportunity.

Jiwoo: Knight of Wands, 5 of swords, 6 of cups.

Yeah the knight of wands was her. She had enthusiasm and worked hard pre-debut. I fear she may feel defeated atm. Maybe seeing the young trainees she feel she might not debut. However 6 of cups can mean a yes!

Funa: 5 of pentacles rev, 10 of cups, The Moon.

She seemed to be posotive in her trainee days. She feels happy and accomplished but with the moon means deception. Maybe she will get rigged?? I don't think she will debut.

Moa: The Sun, 7 of cups, 4 of wands

Just like Funa she was optomistic and kept her head up. At the moment she probably has a lot of perhaps unrealistic thoughts? Maybe she is picturing herself being 1st place even though she's Thai (I'm Zhang Hao exists but South Korea is quite xenophobic to South East Asians, Zhang Hao is at least East Asian). However the chances of her debuting is high. She will celebrate soon.

Chanelle (my sister!!): Two of Pentacles rev, 6 of cups, 7 of swords. Ok my girl may have had trouble balancing between the trainee schedule. Atm she is being creative and feeling happy. Though I'm worried because she might be betrayed of some sort? Rigging?

Jeonguen: 10 of swords, Ace of swords, The Devil rev.

Jesus who hurt this girl? Yeah her trainee life was defiantly not sunshine and rainbows. She feels this is a new beginning for her but devil rev? Going back to bad habits? SHe probably won't debut either.

Jihyun: Emperor, 6 of swords, 5 of pentacles.

She might have been quite hard-working and maybe even strict? I keep thinking about a man in power let's pray she's alright. She feels this is a new chapter in her life and is willing to work hard, but the 5 of pentacles... no she isn't debuting.

Moka: 10 of wands, Emperor, 5 of wands.

Ohh hard-worker I see. She did everything to debut. Emperor means she's being bold (I keep thinking of a man in authority, let's pray for these girls..). 5 of wands can mean chaos. Nope.

Yunah: Star, Queen of swords, 5 of pentacles.

She must have been lucky or the star in her trainee days (she could be a producer favourite). She's being smart and planning moves to debut. However I don't think she'll debut with the 5 of pentacles.

Minju: King of Wands, Six of Cups, The Devil

She's mature and hard-working. She is feeling happy being chosen to be part of the show but the devil... yikes. Nope

Jemin: 6 of swords, 10 of swords, Temperance

It must have been quite a start becoming a trainee. 10 of swords?? What the hell.. and with the Temperance maybe? She needs to be patient.#

Hyewon: Stregnth rev, 9 of Pentacles, 3 of wands rev

She seemed to have issues pre-debut (could she be the trainee with an attitude scandal in my previous reading?). Maybe suffered from health issues? She seems happy now but the 3 of wands can mean delay so no.

Youngseo: 9 of pentacles, King of Wands, The Emperor

She seemed posotive and hardworking. She's mature and disciplined, but with the emperor. Maybe a higher-up could sabotage her debut?

Ruka: 9 of Cups, 9 of Pentacles, 8 of swords

She seemed relaxed pre-debut. SHe was probably assured she would debut. Again she's working hard and optimistic. 8 of swords.... bad new y'all

Yewon: 7 of pentacles,, 6 of pentacles, Fool rev

She was hard-wrkoing and optomistic. 6 of pentacles can mean she's feeling generous? Maybe she is helping other trainees. Fool rev can mean risky decisions so nope
