Po-Go Pre Hurricane Adventure: Mini-Apocalypse Edition
Friday September 8th, 2017 @ ~6PM
Current weather: calm and sunny
Last year when Matthew grazed us, my Dad got pissed off that he put up those shutters for nothing. I don’t think...nah. Nah. We’re not gonna be so lucky this time. We’re taking this hurricane up the ass no matter which path it takes.
Matthew was the tutorial. This is where shit is ACTUALLY gonna get real.
But at least my PoGo raid crew is taking it seriously too!
Raiku raid month was in full swing when the hurricane hype on Monday began. Gas lines snaked around the pumps and into the street, water became the most sought after item in the state, and grocery stores were in a nonstop frenzy like Christmas shopping season on steroids. The local news stations spent the entire week not talking about Trump for once in order to focus on round the clock coverage of Irma.
Our raid group prioritized finding each other supplies as most people were too busy preparing and panicking to attend any raids. We actually did manage to scrounge up enough people for a Raiku raid on Thursday, but the conversation was all about hurricane prep even as we tapped away at our phones. We all lived far west of the evacuation zone (west of U.S. 1) but a few decided to skip town and drive north and out of the state.
I’d like to do that experiment like last year where I stick my pokemon in gyms before the storm hits and see who’s mad enough to take them down (or spoof, but afaik that hasn’t been a problem as of late) in the middle of the storm, but two things hamper my ambitions:
Mom has to work in the middle of the storm because she’s “mandatory personnel” and she’s less than thrilled about it. Thing is she’s taking my car because it’s the most expendable vehicle in the household.
This game, even on low power mode, saps my battery at a rate of about 1% every three minutes. I won’t really be turning it on the game the power goes out, that’s for sure.
Whoops, make that three things. I don’t currently have anything to check. All my defenders have been booted out.
I could still give it a shot early tomorrow since the feeder bands pack as much punch as a typical rainy Florida summer shower, but I don’t want to do anything ridiculous over a game.
I think our hurricane prep is as ready as it will ever be. The steel shutters are up, the plants have been moved indoors, and my aunt who lives in Magnemite heaven (a.k.a. by the ocean) has come in and brought whatever supplies she could get, including a pack of D batteries. That was the one thing we couldn’t find ANYWHERE. Bless her soul.
Hurricane Essentials
Three lanterns, one of which can has a phone charging port (that one’s from my aunt she’s so great!)
Three smaller flashlights
Four Five packs of 40 water bottles
Six 1 gallon water jugs
Two packs of 24 water bottles
A 2 gallon cooler which we plan to fill with fresh water
A ton of food in the fridge
3 canisters of gas to power the bbq grill that will heat up the food in the fridge
A couple breakfast pastries which I already ate...oops
Four boxes of cereal
Four boxes of cereal bars
12 cans of corned beef
Three large bags of chips
My small stash of emergency unhealthy Asian chocolate snacks (Pocky, Yan Yan, and those Panda cream filled cookies)
Hurricane Essentials that need doing:
Fill up a bunch of bags with fresh water and chuck them in the freezer
Fill up a bunch of buckets with shower water--except we only have one bucket so we’re hoping the water will still be running
Move stack of books and papers away from the windows
Find my folded fan because not having an AC in the middle of September is going to suck
Hurricane Quality of Life Items
My cell phone -- my only source of wi-fi for a while
x50 Poke-balls in my inventory to at least keep the streak alive
Two full Power Banks
One fully charged iPad
One Laptop (it’ll be fully charged)
My gigantic RxPrep book -- I’m taking the NAPLEX on Tuesday if I make it out of this alive!
“RxPrep Abridged”: a large collection of handwritten notes that detail the essentials, which were meticulously accumulated over the course of the past two months
A simple five function calculator to re-practice NAPLEX math problems (I had a bunch on the computer and I’m kicking myself for saving “the best for last”)
One radio that may or may not still work

Went to a Mexican place, put hot sauce thinking it was reg salsa and I fucken died. Also my bank account has been suffering since the beginning of 2017. Who knew finding a job and becoming an adult would cost SO MUCH -Midyear conference (getting a suit, flight, registration, food in Vegas) -Residency applications (match registration and $/institution) -Interviews (flight and hotel) Got a job yay! --> Move $$ -Getting licensed $$$$$ (rxprep book, bunch of licensing applications fees, registering for naplex) -Rent $$$, getting a car $$$$$$$, getting car insurance Like...? Imma go back to my bank statements and add this shit up so you can see how ridiculous it all is. I'm super curious at what the numbers gonna be.
