There's moment where Rya and Toyang have a conversation after being apart for 50+ years.

Toyang recalls being tipsy at 1 am trying to cook breakfast for the two of them, when Rya corrects her and says "Actually, that was me. You were too drunk to even lift a spoon"

she points out the window, "You were freezing, blue all over, because you slipped and couldn't get up. I had to drag you inside and heat up a can of soup." "I was happy when I got you inside. Felt like I could hold up the world in just my hands. What small hands they were. Do you remember now?"

basically Toyang gets a rude awakening that a 10 year old took care of her while she spiraled into her own grief

I know I say it like Toyang leaving Rya to Aciano was the worst outcome, but if she’d gone back home with her, and with news that Ising was dead, her parents would have thrown her out and where would they both be? After Mercedes died, having an unhappy life was just inevitable to both of them

the last palindrome moths is about lgbt+ people but. they don’t want to come out to each other so they all think they’re the one that has to pass. this never gets resolved.

After 30 years, the best Toyang could do is imagine Rya (who is in her 50s at this point) as a teenager because while Toyang knows Rya has grown up away from her, she can’t even process just how much time she spent without her, wringing her hands from guilt but never taking action. It’s unconscious infantilizing at best, and a way of unburdening her psyche at worse. she was only ten years old when she left, and now she’s older than her biological mother ever lived to be

I did actually do a practice drawing of Toyang (pre-transition), Rya and Mercedes awhile back. Want to tweak some things, fix the pose and fix the anatomy but this is basically them

Finally finished my class project about Rya, which means I can sleep
