[2024.05.01] GQ Japan x Yuzuru Hanyu - JUNE ISSUE
Tumblr media
Yuzuru Hanyu’s Challenge
After winning two consecutive Olympic gold medals, Yuzuru Hanyu, who turned professional in 2022, is taking on a new form of expression: an ice show that the produced entirely on his own. The extraordinary figure skater danced in front of the cameras, dressed in items designed by Gucci’s new creative director, Sabato de Sarno.
Photographs by Taro Mizutani Styled by Tetsuro Nagase Hair styled by TAKU VOW-VOW FOR CUTTERS Makeup by COCO SEKIKAWA OFFICE Words by Kosuke Kawakami
The unique path that Yuzuru Hanyu walks After entering the studio and exchanging a few words with photographer Taro Mizutani, Yuzuru Hanyu operated his smartphone as if convinced of something. A gentle piano piece played from the speakers. It was ‘aqua’, a piece composed for his daughter by Ryuichi Sakamoto, who passed away last year. Moving his body flexibly, as if surrendering to the music, the studio had transformed into a beautiful, dignified and tense space that no one could step into.
“When I saw the lighting directly above me, I thought it looked like the sun, like light from heaven. Mr. Mizutani also said, ‘I want you to look up. I want you to look up and think about something’. I thought it feels like a prayer, so I chose ‘aqua’ because it fits the image".
As a figure skater, he was won all sorts of accolades, including two consecutive Olympic titles, two World Championships, and four consecutive Grand Prix Final titles. He has also received the People’s Honor Award. In 2022, he became a professional skater in order to ‘pursue the ideal of Yuzuru Hanyu’. Since then, he has held numerous self-produced ice shows and solo performances at Tokyo Dome, Saitama Super Arena, and other venues.
“Even though I turned professional, I don’t think my fundamentals have changed. The world I’ve always wanted to express, the artistic nature of figure skating and the athletic aspect of it has not changed. During competitions, there are always rules and there are times when I had to perform in a certain way. But in the world of shows, I have to satisfy the audience in 360-degree, I have to use my brain to create the videos that will be played at the venue and I have to think about the words that I want to convey. I am expanding and deepening my thoughts to areas that I have not considered before.”
Just as a musician plays music and an artist uses a paintbrush, Hanyu uses his body to express himself.
“What’s fun about it is that when everyone watches it, I get to see a lot of different opinions, people think about it in different ways and each person interprets it in their own way. What I'm doing, I believe that what I am creating is a ‘path’. The values, background, past, future, and so on become the path, and along the way, one may notice something or feel something. I want the audience to see it and share it. I’m really happy when people say that they enjoyed the journey and are glad that they walked the path. That makes me happy and that’s why I feel like I can continue on this path”.
When asked if he thinks it’s more fun now that he can express and create freely than in the competitive days when he was bound by rules and forced to compete, Hanyu thought for a while and then denied it.
“I don’t think it’s good enough just to feel fun. Ever since my competitive days, I’ve always believed that competitions aren’t about having fun, and I’ve never wavered from that philosophy of mine. There are some people who say you can only perform well if you enjoy it, and I understand why people think that’s the right answer. But for me, if I have fun, I feel like I’m not being serious enough. There is a certain kind of performance that comes out because of the tension, and that is what allows me to train hard every day. Even in the creative field, when it comes to creating something, it is not good just to have fun. Of course, it’s possible because there’s also fun in it, and I’m able to create because someone sees it and enjoys it, which brings me joy and happiness. But if I continue to only feel fun, I may end up with just empty words and a false worldview with no depth.
Hanyu says that he feels he lacks ‘vocabulary’ as an artist.
“Vocabulary is also necessary for physical expression. If I want to show a scene just by moving my hands a little, I need to know the techniques to do so. I have to learn how to move my hands in such a way that it looks beautiful, and engrave it in my body. Let my nerves learn it, let my brain study it, and eventually I will be able to do it. It’s not like I can dance like a professional dancer or ballerina, but I’ve been figure skating for more than 20 years. Because of this, I have the potential to create new expressions by learning their techniques. I believe that if I study hard and able to do it on the ice, I will become a unique presence”.
There is no goal, no rivals to compete with. Yet, without hesitation, he continues on his own path.
“Being on the ice is like my ‘native language’ (laughs), so if I move away from it, I am no longer Yuzuru Hanyu. The knowledge, experience and soul I’ve cultivated since I was four years old are there, a place where I can express myself from the bottom of my heart. Of course, I’ll probably start to decline as I age, but if I continue to use the language of figure skating for another 30 years, there may be a form of expression that can only be created at that particular time and age. I believe there is such a possibility, and I think I must continue to strive for that possibility”.
Yuzuru Hanyu, as the one and only Yuzuru Hanyu, continues to move forward focusing on expression on the ice.

CORE Pro #109 Trios Kingdom 2022 - Night Two 09/02/22 Kalahari - Pocono Manor, Pennsylvania Attendance: 1,227
- The show opened with footage captured earlier in the day from around Kalahari Resort. The 37KAMIINA of MAO, Shunma Katsumata, and Yuki Ueno were shown on a cloverleaf shaped raft riding down the Wild Wildebeest water slide. When they reached the bottom of the slide, standing knee deep in the shallow pool was the founder of The 37KAMIINA and their opponent this evening, Mr. Takeshita. Mr. Takeshita kept his eyes locked on his protégés while rubbing his hands together and laughing deviously.
Match #1 Second Round
Tumblr media
Queen's Quest (Utami Hayashishita, AZM, and Saya Kamitani) vs. The Colony (Electro Ant, Ultimo Ant, and Fire Ant) - Fire Ant had Saya Kamitani up for the Beach Break but she countered into a Canadian Destroyer and picked up the pinfall. Winners: Queen's Quest
Tumblr media
- The crowd applauded the efforts of The Colony as they exited the ring. Stepping out from behind the curtain and joining the ovation was Silver Ant making an unexpected return.
Match #2 Second Round
Tumblr media
The 37KAMIINA (MAO, Shunma Katsumata, and Yuki Ueno) vs. The Last Wave (Josh Alexander, Titus Alexander, and Mr. Takeshita) - Shunma Katsumata dodged the high knee of Mr. Takeshita, but turned around into a handful of salt thrown by the devious Takeshita followed by an inside cradle and the three count. Winners: The Last Wave
- The Trustbusters were filmed discussing strategy at the Paxton Grotto swim up bar. They began splashing water at the camera man when they noticed the filming.
Match #3 Second Round
Tumblr media
BULK Orchestra (Hayato Tamura, Ryuichi Kawakami, and Quiet Storm) vs. Jericho Appreciation Society (Angelo Parker, Matt Menard, and Daniel Garcia) - Ryuichi Kawakami had Matt Menard up in Doomsday Device position, but Angelo Parker pushed Hayato Tamura off the top rope to the floor as Daniel Garcia clipped the knee of Kawakami. Garcia applied the Dragon Tamer to Ryuichi, but Quiet Storm broke it up. Quiet Storm left himself open for a double DDT from Parker and Menard and the Jericho Appreciation Society advanced in Trios Kingdom 2022. Winners: Jericho Appreciation Society
Match #4 Second Round
Tumblr media
Mysterious Q, FOR, and JJ vs. Burning Embers (Athena, Samuel Shaw, and JONAH) with Raychell Rose - Samuel Shaw had JJ locked in the sleeper hold. JJ was quickly fading but managed to tag in Mysterious Q who, in an impressive feat of strength, managed to lift both Samuel Shaw and his own partner up for a release German suplex before making the cover. Winners: Mysterious Q, FOR, and JJ
Match #5 Non-Tournament Action
Tumblr media
Team Filthy (Tom Lawlor, Royce Isaacs, Danny Limelight, and Black Tiger) vs. The Trustbusters (Ari Daivari, Parker Boudreaux, Slim J, and Sonny Kiss) - A back and forth contest until Danny Limelight went tag in Black Tiger and instead was met with an open hand slap from Tiger. Black Tiger began attacking Tom Lawlor on the apron and to the floor as Royce Isaacs tried to break the two up. Back in the ring, Limelight received a big chokeslam from Parker Boudreaux and lost the fall. Winners: The Trustbusters
Tumblr media
- Everyone joined the chaos in the ringside area as it turned into a five on three attack. A man with a Super Muneco mask purchased from a vendor table limped his way toward the ring and began to fight against The Trustbusters using some of the signature offense of Black Tiger, but was soon overwhelmed. Back in the ring, Ari Daivari got on the mic as the imposter Black Tiger unmasked to reveal the newest member of The Trustbusters, DJ Karl Fredericks. Lawlor tried to climb into the ring but was held back by Royce Isaacs. Daivari said he had it on very good authority that the New Japan office doesn’t want any of their talent wrestling, fighting, or even interacting with DJ Karl; and it would be in Team Filthy’s best interest to steer clear of The Trustbusters.
Match #6 Non-Tournament Action
Tumblr media
Z-Brats (SB KENTo and Shun Skywalker) vs. The Embassy (Erick Stevens and Brian Cage) with Prince Nana - Brian Cage went for the Steiner Screwdriver on Shun Skywalker, but Skywalker landed on his feet behind Cage and hit him with the SSW powerbomb. SB KENTo locked on the SB Shooter. Erick Stevens tried to make the save, but was held at bay by Skywalker and Cage cried uncle. Winners: Z-Brats
- As Brian Cage and Erick Stevens argued after the match, Prince Nana tried to play peacemaker but was grabbed from behind and dragged to the back by Josh Alexander. Cage nor Stevens seemed too terribly concerned.
Match #7 Semi-Final Round
Tumblr media
Queen's Quest (AZM, Utami Hayashishita, and Saya Kamitani) vs. Jericho Appreciation Society (Angelo Parker, Matt Menard, and Daniel Garcia) - Utami Hayashishita had Daniel Garcia up in the Argentine Backbreaker. Following a series of elbow strikes, Garcia countered with the Saka-Otoshi inverted headlock takeover into a bully choke. Utami fought for the ropes but the referee called for the bell once she became unresponsive. Winners: Jericho Appreciation Society
- The Last Wave were accompanied to the ring by Prince Nana. As Nana had done dozens of times years ago to Josh Alexander’s wife Jade Chung, Alexander demanded Prince Nana get on all fours and serve as a step stool. Nana complied, but instead of using him to reach the ring apron, Alexander booted him in the ribs and tossed Prince Nana into the Kalahari lazy river.
Match #8 Semi-Final Round
Tumblr media
The Last Wave (Josh Alexander, Titus Alexander, and Mr. Takeshita) vs. Mysterious Q, FOR, and JJ - FOR went for a running European uppercut on Titus Alexander, but Titus caught it and countered with a backslide. FOR rolled his shoulder up, but Titus kept FOR's arms locked while Josh Alexander got into position to apply the ankle lock. A chop to the throat from Mr. Takeshita incapacitated Mysterious Q and FOR was forced to tap out. Winners: The Last Wave
Tumblr media
- As the crowd began to file out of the building, on the far end of the parking lot a helicopter could be seen landing at the Kalahari helipad. The doors opened and Samuel Shaw was shown boarding. As he had done on Night One, JJ could be seen attempting to board the helicopter but was again made to leave. He wasn’t alone however, as Mark Andrews and Flash Morgan Webster both exited the helicopter before it began its ascent.

G-REX Championship First Champion Decision Tournament 1st Round: Takanori Ito d. Ryuichi Kawakami (18:06)
Takanori Ito, a product of the Wrestle-1 dojo, is the presumptive Ace of GLEAT, so to see him win this would not be a surprise whatsoever. I’m not exactly sure why CIMA wrestled twice on this show.

Marvelous ran in Tokyo Shinkiba 1st-RING today. At the same venue yesterday, VAMOSTAR ran a show that was shown live on NicoNico, featuring several All Japan wrestlers, as well as Osamu Nishimura. TOTAL ECLIPSE’s Kuma Arashi wrestled a 30-minute time limit draw semi-main against Daimonji So.
Hey, I was wrong, Roppongi Vice v. Young Bucks did NOT happen on AEW Dynamite last night. It didn’t happen on Friday’s Rampage either (sorry for spoilers). It was supposed to happen last week on Rampage but Rocky removed himself due to COVID symptoms. Both teams featured in the Lights Out main event between Orange Cassidy v. Adam Cole, so maybe soon. Sorry for the screwup.
STARDOM has their big show in Nagoya Saturday. AJPW, NOAH and Dragon Gate all return this weekend too. NJPW does not, although there will be an NJPW Strong episode on Saturday.
See you Sunday.
