PG Work Exchange : St. Andrews Botanic Garden

My class visited St. Andrews Botanic Garden back in May on our study abroad trip. We chose to visit the 18 acre garden in Fife due to our connections with the team. Kirsty Wilson, the glasshouse supervisor, spent 9 months at Longwood Gardens as an international intern, her internship overlapped our class by about five months and the director, James Hearsum, is a graduate of the Longwood Gardens Graduate Program. Having spent the afternoon in the garden I was inspired to come back during my work exchange and spend a week guest gardening with the team.

St. Andrews is a garden that has fallen into disrepair since its move to its current location in the 1960′s. The garden has changed hands over the decades from the University of St. Andrews to the Fife Council and finally in 2014 the St. Andrews Botanic Garden Trust was formed and with it new goals, aspirations and a new team. 

What really excites me about the garden is that there is so much work to be done! The property has good bones, a great collection and an incredibly motivated staff to renovate the garden to bring it back to a thriving landscape. During my time spent at St. Andrews I was fortunate to be able to work on several projects with the team. 

The first project I worked on was with Beccy Middleton, one of the two outdoor display supervisors. We took the week to completely dismantle and rebuild one of the beds in the herb garden. The bed we were working on was triangular and contained plants that are used in ancient medicine.

Our first step was to lift all of the plants out of the bed; most of them went into crates and then into cold frames to be replanted later in the week. We potted up the smaller plants and put them into a greenhouse where they will be nursed over winter to be planted in the spring. 

The main goal of the renovation was to improve the soil, other than weeding the bed hadn’t been touched since it had been planted about 40 years ago. After all of the plants were removed we worked compost into the soil throughout the bed.

The last step was to replant the larger specimens that we had stored in the cold frames. It was incredible to see the process of a garden being demolished and the resurrected all within a week.

Beccy and I also worked to renovate the Cactaceae bed in the Order Bed Garden. The process was similar to the renovation of the herb bed so I’ll just show you photos!

Top dressed with gravel and ready to be planted next year! I’m a happy camper!

I also worked with Sarah Carlton, the other outdoor display supervisor and her teammate Peter to do make some serious changes in the woodland garden. I was tasked with cutting back some huge tree heathers to thin the canopy. We reduced the height by half in some places! We also ripped out mats of ivy from beneath the trees to uncover some struggling rhododendron and some other hidden gems!

The time I spent at St. Andrews Botanic Garden was fun, informative, and productive. Beccy, Kirsty, and Sarah welcomed me into the garden like I was one of their own and made me feel like I was a valuable part of their team. They were helpful, knowledgeable and incredibly motivated. I will definitely be coming back to St. Andrews to visit and see the progress that the team has made in the garden (and if I’m lucky they’ll let me lend a hand again!).
