OAP back home after having new valve fitted

A WOMAN aged 101 has become one of the oldest patients in the UK to get a new heart valve. Ruth Shire was back at home just days after life saving keyhole surgery.

The retired nurse was diagnosed with aortic stenosis, a narrowed heart valve, after becoming increasingly breathless last year. She was delighted to be told just before Christmas she could have a Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI), which inserts a tube through the top of the leg. Last month, she become the oldest person to get a new valve fitted at her local Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, and was HOME three days later. Ruth admitted: “I had great reservations as regards the consequences of stroke and other complications. It shows this procedure can be done in elderly people quite safely, especially people like me with my 101 years.” Daughter Miriam added: “Since becoming a widow 18 years ago, my mother has held on to her independence with fierce determination. She still lives in her own house and runs a very active life. “It means so much to know that she, and we, will have some bonus quality time.” Around 300,000 Brits suffer from aortic stenosis. It is hoped TAVI – recently rolled out to patients of all ages – could help save many of them. Dr Sagar Doshi, who led the surgery, said: “We’re delighted with the outcome for Mrs Shire and very pleased that we helped maintain her well being and independence.”

Snacking on walnuts can boost heart

EATING a handful of walnuts a day could stave off cardiovascular disease. They help boost bacteria in the gut, with knock-on benefits for the heart. Scientists found they are rich in polyunsaturated fats and omega fatty acids that fight bad cholesterol. A US team analysed faecal samples from a trial of 35 participants at high risk of cardiovascular disease on different diets. They found a diet incorporating whole walnuts increases absorption of healthy plant polyphenols and antioxidants. Lead author Mansi Chandra, of Juniata College, US, said of the gut study: “Our findings represent a new mechanism through which walnuts may lower cardiovascular disease risk.                 Article from daily paper

DEEP vein thrombosis is a potentially deadly blood clot that develops within a deep vein in the body. DVT Awareness Month was March and medical experts hope that spreading details about this commonly occurring condition can save lives. But what exactly is DVT? Sindy jodar, a senior cardiac nurse at the British Heart Foundation, said: “DVT is a blood clot in one of the deep veins in the leg, usually the calf, and it affects tens of thousands of people each year in the UK. “It must be treated urgently as there is a risk the clot will travel to the lungs and block a blood vessel – known as a pulmonary embolism. “Symptoms include swelling, throbbing or cramping pain in one leg usually in the calf or thigh. “The skin can be warm, red or darkened around the pain. You may see swollen veins that are hard or sore to touch. “These symptoms can also happen in the arm or abdomen if that is where the clot is. “Certain situations that limit movement also bring a higher risk. For example, being confined to a bed or going on a long journey of more than three hours by car, plane or train.” If you have symptoms call your GP or 111 as soon as possible. If you also have breathlessness or chest pain, you should call 999 or go to A&E for urgent treatment as this indicates you might have a pulmonary embolism. DVT risk is higher for people over 60, if you are overweight, take the contraceptive pill, are treated with hormone replacement therapy, are pregnant, have cancer or heart failure, or have varicose veins.

Tinnitus

A Tinnitus is a sound, or sounds, inside the head created by your own hearing system. It is a symptom and not a condition. So wherever possible, it is important to find out why the tinnitus occurs. Most commonly, it is after attending a concert or exposure to loud noises, or simply as a consequence of age-related decline in normal hearing. There can be medical causes for tinnitus, for example Meniere’s disease

( an inner-ear problem that can cause dizzy spells ), wax blocking the ear canal, damage to the ear drum causing scarring ( otosclerosis ). Rarer causes include anaemia, thyroid disease, use of aspirin or conditions affecting the brain. Treating tinnitus is about symptom control, unless you can identify the underlying cause and fix it. For people with no underlying reversible medical cause, treatment revolves around providing alternative sounds to create a distraction and reduce focus on the tinnitus noise. For those with even mild hearing loss, hearing aids can help with symptoms as they boost normal sounds and mask tinnitus sounds.

BRITISH scientists have developed technology which could identify and treat a range of diseases much earlier. Experts have worked out how to isolate a single protein – 10,000 times thinner than a human hair – and see how it acts and alters over time. Changes to proteins occur before illness so it means researchers can now see how they affect conditions such as Parkinson’s – and how they react to different drugs.

Prof Mohsen Rahmani, of Nottingham Trent University, said: “This could play a key role in improving survival rates.”

A NEW Covid strain has been detected in the UK, with the symptoms including conjunctivitis and red and itchy eyes. The Arcturus virus is a subvariant of Omicron, which first hit the UK in late 2021. It is now present in more than 30 countries, including Britain, but case numbers remain low. Dr Kenny Livingstone, chief medical officer at ZoomDoc Health, which provides same day doctors’ letters, explained: “This new strain has been spreading across india at a rapid pace and is now beginning to spread across the US and the UK. “The most common symptoms are quite bad conjunctivitis or red and inflamed eyes. That is in addition to all the other usual Covid-19 symptoms, such as a sore throat, blocked or runny nose, headache, high temperature, feeling exhausted or a new and continuous cough.” There is no heightened cause for concern in the UK, where there were just 30 cases in London last month. But some experts have encouraged us to wear masks on public transport to help limit the potential spread of the virus. Dr Livingstone added: “The question of whether it’s any worse than other variants is still to be understood. “The new spring vaccine is coming out and we would advise people, especially those who are immuno – compromised and the elderly, to get their booster when invited.” The NHS will contact those who are eligible when their seasonal booster is due. Advice for anyone with Covid remains that they should try to stay at home and avoid contact with other people for five days.

KNOW YOUR NUMBERS

EVERYONE over the age of 40 should have their blood pressure checked at least every five years. GP surgeries and some pharmacies and workplaces carry out free testing; you can also buy a monitor for home use. The results comprise two numbers – the top one (systolic pressure) is the force at which your heart pumps blood around your body; the bottom one (diastolic pressure) is the resistance to the blood flow in the blood vessels. Ideal blood pressure is between 90/60 and 120/80 (or below 150/90 for over eighties). However, if you are measuring your blood pressure at home, its slightly different; high blood pressure is considered to be an average of 135/85 for those aged under 80, or 145/85 for those aged 80 and over. If your reading is between 120/80 and 140/90, it means you’re at risk of developing high blood pressure if you don’t take steps to reduce it.

AP, Telangana and Karnataka students shine in JEE Advanced, NEET UG

Students from Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh, have been doing consistently well in JEE Advanced and NEET exams for a decade, now Karnataka students have also improved their performance in the NEET UG 2021 and 2022.

The academia attributes students’ success to the presence of multiple medical colleges and the influence of elite institutions such as IIT Hyderabad, IISc Bangalore, and NIT Warangal in the three states and the presence of several multinational companies that create many career opportunities in these states.

The JEE Advanced and NEET data from these states paint an impressive picture. Four students from Telangana were among the top 50 scorers in NEET 2022 and 61.77% of students qualified the exam from Andhra Pradesh.

In 2022, four students from AP made it to the top 10 in the JEE Advanced 2022. In 2021, 27 students from AP and Telangana made it to the top 100 and three of the top 10 rankers were also from Andhra and Telangana. In 2020, the two states contributed 25 candidates to the top 100 list.

In 2022, three Karnataka students made it to the top 10 in the NEET UG results, nine students from Karnataka were among the top 50 ranks. The number of students from Karnataka securing the top 10,000 ranks in NEET-UG doubled in 2021. A total of 436 students made it to the top 10,000 as compared to 351 in 2020 and 198 in 2019.

Combining syllabi gives an added advantage

“JEE and NEET are two of the most competitive examinations in the country. To top them requires strong basics, targeted practice, dedicated time and effort. Traditionally, most students in Hyderabad begin their preparation from class VII or VIII onwards. Several of them enrol in schools with an integrated curriculum, that combines the board syllabi along with the course of the competitive exams. Over the last few years, we have seen improvement in Bengaluru results,” says Prameela, HoD, Academics, The Narayana Group, placing emphasis on targeted practice with clear goals that give students who have an early start, an advantage over their peers who focus only on the board exams until class XI and then decide to attempt JEE Advanced and NEET.

Schools and coaching centres have customised their curriculum by combining topics from the syllabi of the several boards. “The focus is on conceptual understanding and the programmes are offered based on student's abilities. Students who have technical knowledge get absorbed in different fields, for example, many engineering graduates are also getting into IAS services. Engineering students are also making varied career choices, after completing the BTech degree, some students study subjects such as Technical Law. Similarly, those who may not want to practise Medicine have the option to work in pharma companies and in other allied fields in these states,” says N Shyam Sunder Sagar, assistant professor, ECE, GITAM (Deemed to be University).

Though the majority of students may not know much about the presence of top MNCs in Hyderabad or Bangalore, there is an indirect bias and peer pressure among parents and students. “They get inspired by the neighbourhood success stories. They may also observe the latency faced by the students from backgrounds other than these two. Furthermore, there is an intrinsic mindset that through such courses, migration to other countries becomes easy,” L Koteswara Rao, principal, College of Engineering, KL (Deemed to be) University, Hyderabad Campus.

Nitin Vijay, founder and MD, Motion Education, says that Hyderabad, Telangana, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu have the highest concentration of medical colleges this is one of the major contributing causes to the students’ success. Andhra Pradesh and Telangana have the third highest number of seats in government medical colleges behind Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra. There are the third-highest number of seats in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana for both government and private medical colleges only behind Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. In addition, the majority of South zone students choose P/C/M + B as their elective in the curriculum after class 10, which reflects the region's educational culture. The same is true for JEE as well, given that the South zone is home to some of the top engineering schools, including IIT Madras, NIT Trichy, and others which adds to the determination.
