Eleven smile-inducing, well-crafted products and services of 2014.

I feel particularly compelled to make this list because as I've become pickier about the things I chose to buy, I've realized that if you look hard (and have friends with great taste) you'll find talented craftsman, engineers and designers working tirelessly to create amazing objects, software and services that are carefully designed, enjoyable to use and often delivered in packaging as delightful as the objects themselves. The efforts of these craftsman brought me great joy in 2014. In a way, this list is a thank you to the creators out there who really care about their products and their customers.

In no particular order:

Bellroy Slim Sleeve Wallet in Cocoa - This modern wallet is well constructed with a clever compact design that fits comfortably in my front pocket (my preferred carry pocket). I tend to use one side for business cards and one side for personal cards; I couldn't be happier with the configuration. It was delivered in particularly lovely packaging (a theme in this list).

Saint Rita Parlor 1308 sunglasses with Brown Fade CR39 lenses - Crafted by artisan Neil Bardon in Los Angeles, these shades are my favorite new addition to my growing sunglass collection. They fit my face without any modifications and have a comfortable weight. Nice packaging here as well.

Wistia video hosting service - Wistia's service is something like Vimeo but with far more features. Some of my favorites include user accounts (to provide granular access to your files), embed APIs, advanced HTML5 player, great stats with video playback heat maps and the list goes on. With Wistia I can host one copy of my work and use it around the web on my site, social media sites and private downloads by my sales reps. Wistia customer service is also top notch.

Blue Bottle Coffee at home - I first started using this service when it was called Tonx. Oakland-born Blue Bottle Coffee bought Tonx this year and the quality hasn't changed. They roast then immediately ship whole coffee beans from around the world. Each shipment comes with information about the farmer. Again, great packaging. Blue Bottle is a big part of my morning Chemex pour-over ritual. Subscribe here.

Arq Online Backup software - Ok, this one is a bit nerdy. This Mac app from Haystack Software is designed to make backing up files online easy and affordable. You can use Amazon S3 or Glacier, Google Drive, FTP or a slew of other storage services as the destination. Arq handles the business of creating encrypted backups with a scheme similar to Apple's Time Machine. I have hundreds of gigabytes backed up to Amazon S3 and Glacier for under 15$ a month. Another product with great customer service. You aren't backed up unless you're backed up locally and in the cloud.

Things To-Do list for Mac and iOS - I've been a long time user of this robust to-do list tracker from Cultured Code but it really became a central part of my workflow in 2014. They have a suite of apps for Mac and iOS that stay in sync thanks to their custom cloud-sync engine. Things uses tags, projects and areas of responsibility to help organize your to-dos. I use it religiously. Another strong customer service provider. Look for the iOS extension in iOS 8 to make adding a thing to your to-do list from any app an easy task.

Fjällräven Totepack No. 1 in Black - Made with their signature weather resistant G-1000 fabric, this clever totepack has accompanied me around the world in 2014 (Russia, Slovenia, France, Georgia, Ukraine and Canada). Mine still looks nearly brand new after heavy use and has exceeded my expectations in most every dimension. The cary straps convert to backpack straps and, with the additional leather handles, this bag allows for a variety of carry configurations. It easily accommodates and protects a macbook air (11" in my case), iPad mini, cables, notebooks, and other bits and bobs with room to spare.

Perceval 9.47 Table Knives with White Scales handles - I first experienced these glorious table knives in Vivant Cave, the casual, wine bar side of a split eatery in the 10th district of Paris. In an establishment as impressive and well-considered as Vivant, it's no wonder their knife choice was this good. These razor-sharp table knives are inspired by pocket knives and come in a variety of handle materials. They were crafted by Michelin-starred restaurateur Yves Charles. The back story is also worth a read. I received a set of six as a gift, but would have eventually saved the funds to add them to my silverware drawer. It's no surprise that they are presented in insanely great packaging.

Phillips Hue Bulbs and Switches - While this family of wifi LED bulbs and switches leave a little to be desired in the software, I find myself smiling every time I use them. A firm press on the kinetically powered Hue Tap sends my whole living room slowly fading into dim "theater lighting". The lighting for a dinner party isn't the same lighting you want for reading or watching a movie or cooking, so, for me, having control over color and brightness in a relatively affordable after-market series of lighting products comes in handy many times a day. The bulbs, light strips and switches are easy to set up and control from your iOS device giving you remote control and extensive programmability and integration with internet services such as IFTTT and, thanks to being LED, these lights have the added benefit of lasting a really long time.

The Magic Bullet - You may have heard of this little kitchen blender gadget and it may seem silly on this list, but if you haven't used one, you're missing out! The blades screw onto interchangeable threaded cups and other small vessels so that there is little need to transfer your foodstuffs into other containers. Magic Bullet is very well suited for smoothies, sauces, dressings and other liquid items, but you can blend about anything and I have! I believe this is the only product I've ever acquired that is commonly sold on TV infomercials. But don't let that discourage you, the Magic Bullet system can now be had on amazon.com and is sold in brick-and-mortar establishments under the "As seen on TV" banner. For me, it really is a daily-use kitchen appliance. This one doesn't get a nod for packaging, but one cannot expect everything to come wrapped in kraft paper, right?

General Knot & Co Reversible Bow Tie - Made in the U.S.A., these fine wearables are crafted from an evolving selection of rare and vintage fabrics, so supplies of each are limited. The bow tie fabric I chose is no longer available but check out their current selection of amazing prints and materials. Their line has expanded to all manner of fashion accessories - including belts, keychains, wallets, hankies and of course neckwear. And yes, General Knot ships in very thoughtful packaging.

As I mentioned in the preface, friends with great taste are key to discovering amazing products and services and I owe a thanks to JP Elario, Brent Kiser, Martha Cary and Omar Cabbabe for some of the tips.

I'm sure each of these delightful products will accompany me through next year, but I'm always on the lookout for objects and services birthed at the hands of true craftsman. Happy creating in 2015!
