A Tragic Loss for the Asiatic Lions

On Friday, July 21, 2023, a goods train collided with a pride of four Asiatic lions near Uchaiya village of Rajula taluka in Amreli district of Gujarat, India. The accident resulted in the death of one lion and severe injuries to another. Two lionesses managed to escape unharmed

The incident occurred around 2:05 am when the lions were crossing the railway track that connects Pipavav Port with Rajula town. The railway staff spotted the lions and alerted the loco pilot, who applied emergency brakes, but it was too late to save the lion. The injured lion was taken to a nearby rescue center and later shifted to Sakkarbaug Zoo in Junagadh for treatment

This is not the first time that a train has hit a lion in this area. In September 2022, a lion cub was killed by a passenger train on the same railway track. In 2022, the Gujarat government revealed that 283 lions, lionesses, and lion cubs died within two years until December 2021, out of which 29 deaths were due to unnatural causes

Asiatic lions are an endangered species that are only found in the Gir forest and its surrounding areas in Gujarat. According to the 2022 population estimation, there were 674 Asiatic lions in this region. The loss of even one lion is a huge blow to their conservation efforts
