Introduction: Week One

Talofa Lava, my name is Faith Lautua. I was born on March 27th 2004. I am 17 years old. Both of my parents are Samoan. My dad is from the village of Faleula, whereas, my mum is from the village of Levi Saleimoa. In 2007, I migrated from Samoa to New Zealand. I aspire to become a fashion stylist in the future. Hopefully, I can collaborate with some of my favourite fashion brands, such as Saint Laurent and Gucci. I am a huge fan of Harry Styles and The Weeknd. However, I believe that “citypop” is the best musical genre in history (in my opinion).

The image shown, is a picture of my little sister, Angel, and I, at a sleepover at my aunty’s house. That was the first time my sisters and I had been invited to a sleepover and spent the night away from home. At that very moment, I was very happy because I was blessed to spend quality time with my family, while also developing independence as a young lady.

My name is Farren

Known as the Auckland Isthmus wedged between the Pacific Ocean and the Tasman sea was a well-known area to many great Polynesia seafarers discovering Aotearoa thousand of years ago. The Ngati Whatua tribe who settle the wider Auckland Isthmus named this area as Tamaki Herenga Waka which it means “the destination of voyagers”.

Fort Lane being the original shoreline of the currently reclaimed commercial bay has a rich commercial and cultural history. It was once a home for Maori people where they would trade, bath, swim and collect seafood. Maori people see water as the blood of Papatuanuku (mother earth) that gives life to wildlife, plants, and people. In regarding their identity Maori people identify who they are in relations to their rivers. Currently it is no longer a peaceful space but a space filled with the hustle and bustle of modern-day life. The increase in modernisation and the development of high-rise buildings all contributes to the water down effect of the cultural sacredness of Fort Lane. 

The concept of this installation was drawn from Pacific navigators that sailed through the Pacific oceans and finally reaching and settling in the shore of Aotearoa. The ocean has been an integral part of Pacific and Maori genealogy and a sense of place. The link between the ocean and the people is embedded in the Pacific concept of Moana and its people. Moana incorporates the genealogical and spiritual oneness of the ocean and its people and its reciprocal exchanges between them. Within the beneficial reciprocal exchanges between the people and the ocean, people look after the ocean and in return, the ocean nourishes its people. 

To bring back the ocean, sacredness of Fort Lane as being the original shoreline this glass installation highlighted the surfaces of Fort Lane which I explored using the technique of Frottage. I then turned this into an exploration of materials through a series of castings and imprinting of the surface. Glass was used as a material as I was interested in its caustic effects and how it can reflect light into a dark space like Fort Lane. Being able to imitate water through the reflection of the glass would allow individuals who experiences these installations a sense of quietness, refreshment, and a peaceful state of mind. Being able to pause and be present in the present moment will help individual forget about their busy life. The blue and transparent colours glasses are reference to the ocean and the wires and crims are reference to the lines that was used by seafarers in collecting food for survival.

Hope you had a Blessed Mother’s Day! For us not only was it Mother’s Day, but it was also the Birthday of my Wife, Pati, and my Dad’s 65th Birthday. So it was time he got a gift that he always wanted. A fuel efficient truck. He’s the only economist I know. Growing up he showed me ways to save gas with fuel treatment and other methods. I guess to him it was all about saving money to give money for family Fa’alavelaves. He’s quick to pull out his wallet to support! He’s also very picky on the amount too! lol. He had no idea. We couldn’t even tell Mom’s cuz we knew she’d find a way to give him hints ruining the whole element of surprise. S/O to Doxon Toyota of Auburn for their service. Everyone who kept it a secret. American Samoa, I’m coming!!! This is too crazy and I’m overwhelmed with joy for an opportunity to give back to the Motherland that saved my life. This has really been a dream of mine since I first started DJ’n. Something that was just a funny idea to me laughing to myself is finally becoming a reality. This show means so much because A. Samoa changed my whole perspective on life the 3 yrs I was there to finish high school because I wasn’t doing too well in Seattle.
