On Writing: Getting Tense

There���s nothing that will get me to dump a book sample faster than finding it written in present tense. I don’t care if it’s trendy. I don’t care if it’s easier to translate to foreign languages. I don’t write books in the present tense, and I certainly don’t want to read books written in present tense.

I’ve got reasons. If you’re writing in English, those are reasons you might want to consider.

First off, English as a language has past, present, and (centuries-long improvised) future tense in it. Each of these has specific purposes. I have done X, I am doing X, I will do X. Generally speaking, you do not put a story in the characters will do mode unless you’re making a sales pitch for a bank loan or running for Congress. So much for future tense.

Present and past tense? Those are a little trickier.

Present tense has its uses, many of them good. Witness that I’m writing this post in the present tense; as you would a letter, a telegram, an email. Present tense is good for a conversation. That we have to have the back-and-forth part of the conversational bit in the comments makes this no less a conversational opening piece.

I also find present tense of use in writing stories when I’m wrestling with part of the draft that refuses to come out in good prose. Sometimes I just script those bits and leave them for later. “This happens, the character says X, the Monster appears here,” type of thing. Present tense seems to work for that because I’m making the story happen right then and there. The potter’s wheel spinning, so to speak, instead of taking the finished pot off to dry.

(Some people also use present tense for horror and thrillers where you don’t know if this character will survive, to raise the tension. But those are not my genres.)

To me, a proper story belongs in the past tense. Once upon a time. Long ago there lived a princess who never laughed. Back when the tigers smoked tobacco pipes.

Humans are creatures made of stories. To tell the very first stories about the world around you, you - or someone - had to have survived it first.

Stories happen in the past.

Even if that “past” is an imagined future, a la Star Trek, Babylon 5, and Firefly. For all our education and civilizational software, we’re still running on the original Homo sapiens sapiens brain hardware. And the instincts of that hardware, at least when it’s running an English-language package, say someone had to survive a story before it could be told.

So. There’s my two cents. I’m including a link to Brandon McNulty’s explanation of present tense use in stories; some I agree with, some eh not so much.

Okay I'm gonna give more details than anyone asked for mostly so I have a place to think them through before I talk to my parents.

Over the corse of the last 30ish years I have dabbled (call it less then 25 hours on each skill) with

Embroidery

Crochet

Wire wrapping

Braiding (non hair)

Memory wire bracelet beading

Braiding (plastic lanyards with box formation.

Dandelion chains and grass woven rings

Cloth dyeing (tie dye, batik and solar fabric dyes)

Plus I've probably played around with (25-50 hours)

Hand sewing/finishing

Braiding (hair)

Weaving (ridged heddle and improvised

Macrame

Pony bead animals

Peyote stich beading

Herringbone stitch beading

Needle felting

Wool spinning

And I've actually really worked on( 50+ hours but I'm pretty sure everything Is really 100+ hours at this point)

2d and 3d Right angle weave beading.

Knitting

Sewing/sewing machine/clothes construction including patterns drafting.

I mean I do other arts too: I did 17 years of chior, 5 years of trombone and 3 of piano. I'm a prolific doodler, and I enjoy polymer clay and making bad ceramics.

But I feel like most of my knowlage is around fiber arts. Because I like them. I like planning them, I like selecting materials for them, I like the prepwork. I like the construction. The ones I spent the most time on are the ones I liked the best. But I like the creation. I like result and I like the ability to go back and fix mistakes (I'm gonna crab a little bit about undoing an hour or two of work but I wouldn't do that if I didn't think it was worth it.

My brain is built to look for patterns. The things I love im programing spreadsheets and engineering, I also love in fiber arts.

It's the same patterns

But I always thought that a job/career was supposed to fund my lifestyle and fibre arts.

Not that I could make money creating fiber arts

I did look at selling my beading on etsy or at craft markets. Someone from one of craft markets took me aside and told me that I needed to sell at galleries not markets and that my pricing was too low and that devalue my own and other people's labors. I looked at Etsy myself and relized that the cost of comparable items even without shipping would have me working at $1.50/hour.

But it never really considered doing what I enjoyed as a career.

But my family friend looked at my beading and sewing, asked me about where the ideas came from and told me that this was a thing i could do.

I shower her what a peice i did years ago that i dont find as interesting but that looks dramatic

And a peice i find much more interesting but is more labor intensive and thoughtful but looked simpler and she was intested in the second peice

She said that I shouldn't call it a hobbie I should call it art.

And she gave me a list of software (illistrator) that it would be valuable to learn and people to talk to.

I would also need to creat a website for my work. One that showed the process as well as the result. A place for other artists to look and see what I'm about.

If I want to do this, I'd start as an studio assistant making between $20-$25 per hour.

I'm gonna help her with a small mapping project next week to see if this is something I'm interested in.

I'd network and work for people for a time then apply to an art program for a MFA

I'd make my living off of grants and teaching rather than direct sales.

It's would never make me the money that I could make working a corporate job, (not that im good at climbing the corporate ladder) I'd also get to work on stuff that I was interested in rather than trying to taylor my interests to my work.

It's terrifying for a professional artist to look you in the eyes and tell you that your fourth grade self wasn't just dreaming. And that you could be a professional artist but only if you are willing to try
