Anthropic Faces Class-Action Lawsuit Over Alleged Copyright Infringement

Source – benzinga.com
Anthropic, the AI startup backed by Amazon, Google, and Salesforce, has been hit with a class-action lawsuit in California federal court, alleging large-scale copyright infringement. The lawsuit, filed on Monday, accuses Anthropic of building its business model and flagship AI model, Claude, by illegally using copyrighted books, including works by the plaintiffs.
Allegations and Lawsuit Details
Authors Andrea Bartz, Charles Graeber, and Kirk Wallace Johnson claim that Anthropic used pirated versions of their copyrighted books to train its large language models (LLMs). The lawsuit alleges that Anthropic downloaded and copied these works from illegal sources and incorporated them into its AI systems, which are central to its business operations.
The lawsuit argues that such actions violate copyright law, which prohibits unauthorized copying of copyrighted material. Anthropic has not yet responded to requests for comment on the case.
Previous Legal Issues
This lawsuit follows another legal challenge against Anthropic from October, where Universal Music and other music publishers sued the company for infringing on copyrighted song lyrics. The suit highlighted instances where Anthropic’s AI, Claude, produced near-exact copies of copyrighted lyrics in response to user queries, such as those for Katy Perry’s “Roar” and Gloria Gaynor’s “I Will Survive.”
The music publishers argue that Anthropic unlawfully used these lyrics to train its AI models, which they claim is akin to unauthorized copying and dissemination of copyrighted works.
Anthropic sued over copyright

Broader Industry Context
The legal battles involving Anthropic are part of a broader trend in the media and publishing industries, where organizations are increasingly taking legal action against AI companies. Many news organizations and publishers are concerned about AI-generated content and its potential impact on their revenue and intellectual property.
In June, the Center for Investigative Reporting sued OpenAI and Microsoft for alleged copyright infringement. This lawsuit, along with similar actions by The New York Times, The Chicago Tribune, and prominent U.S. authors, underscores the growing concern over how AI technologies use and potentially exploit copyrighted materials.
AI Partnerships and Content Deals
Amid these legal disputes, some news organizations are choosing to partner with AI companies rather than pursue litigation. OpenAI recently announced partnerships with Condé Nast and Time magazine. These deals will allow OpenAI to use content from various publications, including Vogue, The New Yorker, and Time, to enhance its AI products and services.
Similarly, OpenAI has established a partnership with News Corp to access articles from The Wall Street Journal and other News Corp publications. Reddit has also agreed to collaborate with OpenAI, enabling the company to train its AI models on Reddit content.
Conclusion
As AI technologies continue to evolve and integrate into various sectors, the legal and ethical implications of their use are becoming increasingly complex. The outcomes of these lawsuits could have significant implications for the future of AI development and its relationship with intellectual property rights.

What To Know Before Selling Online
By Eric Prugh, PactSafe
Digital marketplaces have made it overwhelmingly simple to open up an online store and sell products online. Between Etsy, Shopify, eBay, and a host of other online marketplaces, it’s never been easier to make your products available for your customer base. These online marketplaces often manage the online legal regulations for starting an online e-Commerce store, but there are times when sellers/shop owners are the ones responsible for knowing and following the rules and regulations for selling.
Before you set up shop and make your first online sales, there are several legal mandates to consider. For example, there are rigorous restrictions for shipping certain products like nail polish, alcohol and dry ice, and if you are operating the business out of your home, you need to know the zoning laws in your state. The following list of things to consider is by no means comprehensive, but here are five legal things you should know before selling online.
1. Have an informative, concise Terms of Service
Your customers deserve transparency about the way your business operates and what rights they have as users. If signing up for your service or purchasing your product online comes with weekly emails, recurring charges or an auto-renewal, this should be outlined in your Terms of Service and presented conspicuously to your customers.
It is important that customers are given notice of and can acknowledge the Terms before signing up; otherwise, your new business runs the risk of having unenforceable Terms and increase the possibility of a class action suit. Having notifications about the contents and updates of your Terms of Service is an easy way to build trust and transparency with your customers.
2. Protect your users’ data
Just like any retailer, online retailers must have reputable payment gateways. If your online marketplace isn’t using third-party companies (PayPal, CashApp, Venmo, etc.) for payment, it is your responsibility to be compliant with local data protection standards. If you serve customers that are based in the EU, for example, you must protect users’ data in accordance with the GDPR. While the U.S does not have a nationwide privacy law, California law requires web sites that process the data of California residents to follow CalOPPA, and starting in January 2020, CCPA.
Non-compliance is an expensive lawsuit waiting to happen. Become PCI compliant, understand the steps you need to take to encrypt credit card data for your checkout flow and do away with other purchasing data.
3. Insure your product
Whether you’re selling software, a service or materials, it’s important to protect your product or service. In some cases, this might mean having delivery insurance and an exchange policy. In others, it can be as simple as providing customers with a cancellation policy upfront, or a process for service review and feedback.
Good communication is important; no one wants to be left in the dark, particularly a customer in the digital age. Nurture customer relationships like you would any other — with trust and accountability. If everyone is aware of how they are being held responsible in this two-sided relationship, there is less room for legal blunders.
4. Protect your intellectual property
Before you set up your online store or even before you begin selling, it’s crucial that you put legal standards in place about your intellectual property. This means trademarking, patenting and copyrighting your logo, your content, your brand in general. This prevents others from passing off your hard work as theirs. Even more important, putting these legal measures in place will help you double-check that no one else has already claimed your business name. Take the necessary steps to research your product or service, and make it legally official.
5. Have excellent recordkeeping in place
None of the previous four tips matter if there is no record of transactions or of which customers agreed to your Terms before completing the transaction. Easily accessible records of online interactions with customers go a long way in helping you establish expectations between yourself and customers. It is as much for your protection as it is for theirs. Exceptional digital recordkeeping is too often an afterthought and lands companies in hot water. Telling customers how you are protecting them is not enough; your company needs to record when and how customers were notified of your online terms in order for any of your legal efforts to be considered legitimate.
Doing your research and protecting your business before you even start it will help you get further faster and protect you from potential litigation. Starting an online business is easy enough; however, without the proper legal protections in place, you might start losing money before you make it.
As Co-Founder and CEO, Eric Prugh oversees product, customer success, solutions engineering and partnerships at PactSafe, a SaaS company that securely powers high-velocity acceptance for contracts. Prior to his current role, Prugh spent seven years at ExactTarget and Salesforce supporting sales exceeding $30 million in sales, worked for two years in Australia developing the APAC business which grew over 10X during his tenure, and led product and engineering for content management products for what became Salesforce Marketing Cloud.

Alibaba Cloud is overhauling its AI partner ecosystem, unveiling the “Partner Rainforest Plan” during its annual Partner Summit 2024.
The Chinese tech giant’s cloud division has outlined several new initiatives, including an AI partner accelerator programme, enhanced incentives, and a refreshed global strategy for service partners, as it seeks to strengthen its position in the market.
Selina Yuan, President of International Business at Alibaba Cloud Intelligence, said: “At Alibaba Cloud, we believe that collaboration is the key to unlocking innovation and driving growth. Our global partners are not just participants, they are the architects of a new digital landscape in the AI era.
The company’s new AI Alliance Accelerator Programme aims to establish partnerships with 50 AI technology providers and 50 channel partners by 2025. Selected technology partners will receive enhanced technical support, expanded distribution channels, and dedicated AI consulting services, while channel partners will benefit from increased financial incentives for AI-related initiatives.
Alibaba Cloud has also introduced its Revitalised Service Partner Programme, designed to upskill existing partners and cultivate new ones through AI training and empowerment. The programme includes the joint development of Managed Large Language Model Services with service partners, leveraging the company’s generative AI capabilities.
The cloud provider has also committed to extending strategic partnerships with 18 service partners – including prominent names such as Deloitte, Accenture, and Cognizant Worldwide – from its existing pool of 50 global standard service partners.
In various regional developments, Alibaba Cloud has established strategic partnerships across Asia:
Indonesia: The company has partnered with Telkom Indonesia to deliver AI-supported cloud solutions and develop digital talent.
Japan: Information security firm Securai will localise Alibaba Cloud’s Zstack service for the Japanese market.
Thailand: A memorandum of understanding with Yell Group aims to address growing demand for generative AI in the creative media industry.
The company, which currently maintains partnerships with approximately 12,000 organisations worldwide – including industry leaders such as Salesforce, Fortinet, IBM, and Neo4j – has introduced a Synergistic Incentive Programme to foster collaboration between its global technology and channel partners.
“Today, with our revamped global partner ecosystem, we are committed to supporting our global partners to jointly reap the benefits of the AI era and meet the diverse business demands of global customers,” Yuan concludes.

JACOBIN MAGAZINE
Apple, Google, and Microsoft are the champions of teaching tech in schools. For many, they are saving education. Apple cuts prices on their hardware for dot-edu email owners to make their products available to students. Google competes by selling cheap Chromebooks and provides a suite of education services to improve teamwork and collaboration. Microsoft has countless programs to empower classrooms with new technologies, such as teaching with Hololens.
These companies have catchy slogans for their programs like “expanding learning for everyone” and “empower every student on the planet to achieve more.” But we shouldn’t be fooled. These companies position themselves as good corporate citizens by empowering students with tech skills and accelerating STEM education; their motives, however, aren’t pure.
While it may seem like these companies are competing in the education market simply to broaden their consumer base and give back a little, their collective strategy is much more concerning. Tech oligarchs are pushing skills like coding in education to train their own future labor force — and pay them low wages.
It makes sense that these companies are playing the long game on skills and wages. Labor is among their most expensive costs, with tech worker salaries running to the low six figures at Facebook and Google. But with few workers possessing the skills to do these jobs, a competitive salary is the only way that tech companies can compete for talent today.
There is no reason tech workers should expect disproportionately high salaries to be permanent, however. Execs are already doing what they can to suppress wages. The shorter-term strategies are clear. Tech companies collude via anti-poaching schemes to keep wages down. They use non-compete disclosures to push wages down by forbidding workers to get jobs from competitors. They also take advantage of the H-1B visa, hiring immigrant workers for cheaper than their American counterparts.
But we should also note their long-term strategy. Under the charitable guise of providing tech education for all, tech giants are doing whatever they can to increase the labor supply of technically skilled workers so that they can cut tech workers’ wages.
STEM Education and the Rise of the For-Profit Sector
In 1967, then–California governor Ronald Reagan criticized a liberal arts education, declaring that there were “certain intellectual luxuries that perhaps we could do without.” In other words, the reason to go to college was simply to get a job. As part of his broader argument to cut funding for public education, he added that the state should not be subsidizing intellectual curiosity.
Obama offered a new iteration of this idea in his last years as president. Having wooed Silicon Valley execs for financial support during his campaign, he announced his plan for STEM education as a cure to America’s economic woes. His goal was to “provide opportunities to learn computer science for all students.” At the 2015 White House Science Fair, Obama announced a $90 million “Let Everyone Dream” campaign to expand STEM opportunities to marginalized students.
But despite Obama’s push for STEM and some recent across-the-board increases, state spending on higher education remains historically low — nearly $9 billion below pre-financial crisis levels a decade earlier. This is good news for the for-profit sector. The combined demand for STEM education and lack of state funding for education leaves a gap in the market that big tech companies are eager to fill.
Google has developed their own computer science programs for educators. Microsoft is spending $75 millionto increase access to computer science education over three years starting in 2016. Investments in education technology rose to a historical level of $9.5 billion in 2018.
The push for STEM has continued under Trump. Working with Ivanka Trump, tech execs from Amazon, Facebook, Microsoft, and Salesforce agreed to collectively spend $300 million toward computer science education to prepare more students for tech jobs of the future. Apple CEO Tim Cook spoke with Donald Trump shortly after he assumed office, advocating coding classes as a requirement in public schools.
To further the cause, Code.org, backed by CEOs from Google, Microsoft, Amazon, and Infosys, campaigns on an apparent “skill gap” in the US. The idea is that there aren’t enough coders to fill all the programming jobs out there. They suggest that there are over five hundred thousand unfilled programming positions in the country.

Is software will change the solar market?
How do you build a healthy solar business in a constantly changing market? Solar businesses have had to confront the effects of tariffs, changing incentives and many other new drivers of demand, which creates both opportunities and challenges for solar software. At the 2018 Solar Software Summit, MJ Shiao, formerly of Wood Mackenzie Power & Renewables; and Paul Grana, of Folsom Labs; both took a deep look into how the industry has been affected by these changes, and how businesses can continue to thrive by using solar software.
As MJ pointed out, the solar industry had a dim outlook entering 2018. Slowdowns were expected with the expected expiration of the ITC, and tariffs on solar modules also contributed to a slight decline in the market. Distributed solar was losing steam after years of record growth, and many solar installers stagnated or shrunk as well. Small commercial solar was expected to fade as its incentives disappear, and utility solar demand had begun to contract as well.
Despite all of these threats to solar, the industry has actually been proving itself resilient. California remains a “bedrock” market, while other states like Texas and Florida are emerging as new sources of growth. Recent news of new renewables targets in the Midwest shows us that demand is only further growing. In addition, MJ noted that utility solar was starting to beat out other utility scale power installations, even beating out new natural gas plants. More related topics : https://www.solarafter.com/
Finally, solar developers are learning to unlock the full asset value, including avoided distribution costs, and locational benefit of solar. As a result, “in the next five years, we are going to see the U.S. solar capacity double, to 100 MW.”
What does all of this mean for solar software applications? It can be difficult to determine what the future of solar software should be with a shifting market, but Paul pointed out that we can take lessons from software products’ evolution in other industries.
Early software products were delivered as monolithic applications. One source and one business for everything you needed, from start to finish. Companies like Microsoft and Oracle owned the entire spectrum of internal tools that a business needed. If you wanted one part of the program, you still had to purchase most or all of what their solutions offered.
Later, with the integration of the cloud, services could focus on tight vertical niches, such as sales, marketing or HR. Businesses only had to purchase the software products they wanted to use that were dedicated to the problems they needed to solve. In this phase, companies specialized in functional areas, such as Salesforce for CRM or Workday for HR software solutions.
Finally, the most recent step is the further unbundling of software products. Rather than providing a comprehensive software product for an entire organization, products are focusing on a specific use case or application. Paul showed the fragmentation of marketing tools as an example: instead of a single marketing program, you may use Twilio for SMS messages, Algolia for in-app searches and MailChimp for email marketing.
Unbundling programs means that end-users have even more control over what areas of their product they want to build, and what they can buy as an existing solution. This also means that the vendors developing these solutions can be more focused on delivering a quality product that is easy to integrate into an existing business.
To come back to how this relates to solar, Paul noted, “…the trend is not toward one solution to rule them all. The trend is not toward M&A and consolidation so that you have one vendor. The trend is toward many vendors, and that allows the buyers to more effectively get what they want.” Differentiation is what allows the solar industry to actually stay healthy and adapt to the constantly changing regulatory environment. If all solar developers sold the same systems, we would charge down the path to zero margins on projects. By differentiating, solar doesn’t have to sacrifice margins for the sake of closing a deal. The 2018 Folsom Labs and Wood Mackenzie Power & Renewables solar survey reflected this theme in the analysis. Solar companies continued to focus on growth and ramping up the speed of business as the top ways to improve.
On another encouraging note, the ways that large and small companies wanted to improve their business was entirely different, with large companies focusing on more technical elements like shade analysis and financial incentives, and small companies focusing on project management and permitting. This difference supports the need for different types of solar software that address the entire workflow for companies both large and small.

Top 7 Best Practices For Salesforce Development
In 2017, Salesforce came up with its DX version with features like Salesforce CLI, a new sandbox, and best practices for source-driven development. That made helping hands from Salesforce consulting services California more than optional.
The need for best practices arises for bringing synergy into the whole ecosystem and helping create a faster solution that satisfies the particular requirements of each business with its extensive features and customization options.
What Is Salesforce Development?
The Salesforce ecosystem has multiple products covering Marketing, Sales, Services, Analytics, Commerce, and Slack. Under Salesforce development, you build solutions with the help of no-code tools and code. To design, create, and install Salesforce products, several stakeholders work in a seamless way.
Best Practices For Salesforce Development
Plan Everything In Advance
For better and faster Salesforce development, planning is as important as implementation. Certified Salesforce consulting partners emphasize that the best way to plan everything is through brainstorming and SWOT analysis. This not just brings better clarity in the development process but also minimizes the uncertainties that may come later on.
Focus On Process Documentation
Irrespective of our intelligence, we tend to forget things. That's why documenting the process in the form of an SOP, guidebook, etc., is a good choice. These written documents work like a reference point for everyone involved in the development process.
Every step of the monitoring, auditing, and compliance process should have written documents before moving on to development.
Understanding Salesforce Architecture
In order to design and deliver solutions in the Salesforce ecosystem, architectures are used. The architecture assists developers in choosing the best options as per their needs. Thus, prior to beginning any development activities with the aid of Salesforce consulting services, it is essential to comprehend the Architecture.
Use Of Development Tools
Time and resources required in the Salesforce development are directly proportional to the choice of tools. Take a good amount of time to evaluate all the alternatives and seek help from Salesforce consulting company in California whenever necessary.
Use Of Sandbox
Each developer must utilize sandboxes appropriately based on their own requirements. There are numerous Sandboxes in the Salesforce development process with or without data. These Sandboxes provide choices for conveniently tracking changes and advancement in Salesforce development.
Abidance To Coding Conventions Is Must
A Salesforce developer needs to create the code in a readable manner, along with adhering to accepted coding standards and naming conventions. Salesforce consulting services California always suggests developers against complicating the process through the use of difficult frameworks, libraries, and more.
Give Priority To Testing Before Deployment
Skilling the testing stage is an invitation to negative results in the short term or long term. Who wants to sabotage the growth process or do the correction later on? To save time and effort, it is standard practice to test the code using automated test scripts or tools before deployment.
