Enabling CSV data uploads via a Salesforce Screen Flow
This is a tutorial for how to build a Salesforce Screen Flow that leverages this CSV to records lightning web component to facilitate importing data from another system via an export-import process.
My colleague Molly Mangan developed the plan for deploying this to handle nonprofit organization CRM import operations, and she delegated a client buildout to me. I’ve built a few iterations since.
I prefer utilizing a custom object as the import target for this Flow. You can choose to upload data to any standard or custom object, but an important caveat with the upload LWC component is that the column headers in the uploaded CSV file have to match the API names of corresponding fields on the object. Using a custom object enables creating field names that exactly match what comes out of the upstream system. My goal is to enable a user process that requires zero edits, just simply download a file from one system and upload it to another.
The logic can be as sophisticated as you need. The following is a relatively simple example built to transfer data from Memberpress to Salesforce. It enables users to upload a list that the Flow then parses to find or create matching contacts.
Flow walkthrough
To build this Flow, you have to first install the UnofficialSF package and build your custom object.
The Welcome screen greets users with a simple interface inviting them to upload a file or view instructions.
Tumblr media
Toggling on the instructions exposes a text block with a screenshot that illustrates where to click in Memberpress to download the member file.
Tumblr media
Note that the LWC component’s Auto Navigate Next option utilizes a Constant called Var_True, which is set to the Boolean value True. It’s a known issue that just typing in “True” doesn’t work here. With this setting enabled, a user is automatically advanced to the next screen upon uploading their file.
Tumblr media
On the screen following the file upload, a Data Table component shows a preview of up to 1,500 records from the uploaded CSV file. After the user confirms that the data looks right, they click Next to continue.
Tumblr media
Before entering the first loop, there’s an Assignment step to set the CountRows variable.
Tumblr media
Here’s how the Flow looks so far..
Tumblr media
With the CSV data now uploaded and confirmed, it’s time to start looping through the rows.
Because I’ve learned that a CSV file can sometimes unintentionally include some problematic blank rows, the first step after starting the loop is to check for a blank value in a required field. If username is null then the row is blank and it skips to the next row.
Tumblr media
The next step is another decision which implements a neat trick that Molly devised. Each of our CSV rows will need to query the database and might need to write to the database, but the SOQL 100 governor limit seriously constrains how many can be processed at one time. Adding a pause to the Flow by displaying another screen to the user causes the transaction in progress to get committed and governor limits are reset. There’s a downside that your user will need to click Next to continue every 20 or 50 or so rows. It’s better than needing to instruct them to limit their upload size to no more than that number.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
With those first two checks done, the Flow queries the Memberpress object looking for a matching User ID. If a match is found, the record has been uploaded before. The only possible change we’re worried about for existing records is the Memberships field, so that field gets updated on the record in the database. The Count_UsersFound variable is also incremented.
Tumblr media
On the other side of the decision, if no Memberpress User record match is found then we go down the path of creating a new record, which starts with determining if there’s an existing Contact. A simple match on email address is queried, and Contact duplicate detection rules have been set to only Report (not Alert). If Alert is enabled and a duplicate matching rule gets triggered, then the Screen Flow will hit an error and stop.
Tumblr media
If an existing Contact is found, then that Contact ID is written to the Related Contact field on the Memberpress User record and the Count_ContactsFound variable is incremented. If no Contact is found, then the Contact_Individual record variable is used to stage a new Contact record and the Count_ContactsNotFound variable is incremented.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Contact_Individual is then added to the Contact_Collection record collection variable, the current Memberpress User record in the loop is added to the User_Collection record collection variable, and the Count_Processed variable is incremented.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
After the last uploaded row in the loop finishes, then the Flow is closed out by writing Contact_Collection and User_Collection to the database. Queueing up individuals into collections in this manner causes Salesforce to bulkify the write operations which helps avoid hitting governor limits. When the Flow is done, a success screen with some statistics is displayed.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The entire Flow looks like this:
Tumblr media
Flow variables
Interval_value determines the number of rows to process before pausing and prompting the user to click next to continue.
Tumblr media
Interval_minus1 is Interval_value minus one.
Tumblr media
MOD_Interval is the MOD function applied to Count_Processed and Interval_value.
Tumblr media
The Count_Processed variable is set to start at -1.
Tumblr media
Supporting Flows
Sometimes one Flow just isn’t enough. In this case there are three additional record triggered Flows configured on the Memberpress User object to supplement Screen Flow data import operations.
One triggers on new Memberpress User records only when the Related Contact field is blank. A limitation of the way the Screen Flow batches new records into collections before writing them to the database is that there’s no way to link a new contact to a new Memberpress User. So instead when a new Memberpress User record is created with no Related Contact set, this Flow kicks in to find the Contact by matching email address. This Flow’s trigger order is set to 10 so that it runs first.
Tumblr media
The next one triggers on any new Memberpress User record, reaching out to update the registration date and membership level fields on the Related Contact record
Tumblr media
The last one triggers on updated Memberpress User records only when the memberships field has changed, reaching out to update the membership level field on the Related Contact record

Wide Open School organizes free educational resources to help parents and teachers homeschool
Nearly 300 million kids are missing school worldwide because of the coronavirus outbreak, including some 54 million in the U.S. alone. That’s left parents scrambling for resources to help continue their children’s education, often while also working from home themselves — an almost insurmountable challenge. Today, the non-profit media organization Common Sense is launching a site to help parents called Wide Open School (WideOpenSchool.org), which combines the best educational resources for publishers, nonprofits, and education companies in one place.
At launch, this free resource includes content from the American Federation of Teachers, Amplify, Boys & Girls Clubs of America, Head Start, Khan Academy, National Geographic, Noggin, PBS, Scholastic, Sesame Workshop, Time for Kids, XQ Institute, and even YouTube.
All the content offered through Wide Open School is freely available.
But it’s not just a list of helpful websites. Instead, Wide Open School actually programs a full school day for the child by grade level, to ensure they’re getting a mix of educational material that aligns with what their day would have been when attending school.
For example, a 4th grader may be pointed to Prodigy’s math games, YouTube art tutorials, and Khan Academy reading resources in the morning, then instructed to read a book, draw, or listen to music during their screen-free lunch break. In the afternoon, they may take social studies via Google Earth, study science through Amplify, and take P.E. by way of GoNoodle.
The site even suggests evening activities that can be done as a family, like bedtime reading or movies to stream, among other things.
In addition, Wide Open School offers a guide to getting started with learning at home, a collection of virtual field trips, a collection with resources for art and music, and one with resources for emotional well-being — the latter especially critical at a time when anxiety levels are high among parents and kids alike.
There’s also a section dedicated to parents of children with special needs
Everything is organized in a colorful grid with picture images so it can be easily used by children on their own.
For struggling parents new to homeschooling, a resource like this will likely be welcome.
However, Common Sense is opening up the tools to educators, as well. Though many U.S. school systems already offer their students a set of digital resources through direct relationships with educational companies, like Nat Geo or Scholastic, those resources were typically meant to supplement the education the child was receiving at school, not replace it. There may still be large holes in the child’s education that aren’t being addressed.
Common Sense says on the new Wide Open School website has been curated for educational quality.
This taps into the organization’s key strength, as its focus has always been on promoting safe technology and media for children. Today, its main website is known for its trusted reviews of TV, movies, books, games, and apps that help parents understand a given piece of content’s age-appropriateness, as well as concerns with the title in question, if any.
To create the new Wide Open School, Common Sense was able to tap into its existing understanding of the educational media available for families, and then organize it by grade level.
Common Sense says it also worked with key distribution and technology partners Apple, Google, Zoom, Comcast, Salesforce, and Zoom, which have also suggested tools and resources, to ensure they’re aware of and can access the content.
“The coronavirus pandemic has elevated the need for quality learning materials all in one place for families and educators, and Common Sense is proud that trusted experts and partners have joined together to launch Wide Open School so quickly,” said James P. Steyer, CEO and founder of Common Sense, in a statement about the launch.
“Many organizations have moved swiftly to respond to this crisis with incredible resources and special offers for educators and families. We wanted to use our nearly 20 years of experience as an expert reviewer and curator to create the go-to source of quality content that will provide educators with the support they need to shift to remote teaching and a one-stop, trusted place for families to engage kids who are now learning from home,” he added.
Though many U.S. schools are moving towards remote learning, some aren’t yet ready or fully rolled out. And even those schools that have shifted online aren’t necessarily programming the equivalent of a full school day for the students. That can be difficult for parents working from home, as kids complete their more limited educational activities, then look to be entertained. Left on their own, that’s meant full days of gaming or binging YouTube — much to the exacerbation of parents who don’t consider coronavirus cancellations just an early start to summer break.
Wide Open School can supplement whatever remote learning is taking place, as well, or can be used by teachers who are creating online lessons for the first time.
The new website launched publicly today, but is still considered a beta — meaning it’s not the final product.
Common Sense is still working to expand the site and is forging additional educational partnerships with media and education companies, nonprofits, and teachers, in order to add more content, it says.
The site will be available across platforms, including mobile, desktop and TV, in order to allow everyone — even low-income families — to access its resources.
It’s working to add other resources to aid low-income families as well, including information about accessing free or discounted broadband services, as well as resources for more urgent needs to address health, hunger, shelter, and psychological needs.

Documate’s New Guerilla Marketing Campaign Takes A Page from Salesforce – and A Jab At HotDocs
In 2002, three years after its founding, when Salesforce was still an upstart startup seeking to make its mark in the enterprise CRM space, founder Mark Benioff and his team conceived of a brash guerilla advertising campaign to take on the company that was then the incumbent industry leader, Siebel Systems.
With the tag line, “Don’t get bullied,” one ad in the campaign featured a picture of a schoolboy repeatedly writing on a chalkboard, “I will not give my lunch money to Siebel.” Another showed the schoolboy writing, “I will not spend my summer vacation installing Siebel.”
The original Salesforce ad from 2002.
Now, nearly 20 years later, a legal technology startup is taking a page directly out of the Salesforce playbook and today is launching its own guerilla marketing campaign to take on the incumbent in its space.
In this latest iteration, the company taking on the incumbent is Documate, a two-year-old cloud-based document automation platform, and the incumbent it is taking on is HotDocs, a 27-year-old desktop document assembly product owned since 2017 by AbacusNext.
One ad shows a schoolgirl at a chalkboard writing the phrase, “I will not give my lunch money to HotDocs.” Another shows a schoolgirl writing, “I will not spend summer vacation learning to code HotDocs.” Still another shows a schoolboy holding a trophy above his end and next to him written on a chalkboard, “I just used Documate to automate with no code.”
“We’re launching this ad campaign as a play on tech legend Salesforce,” Documate founder and CEO Dorna Moini told me. “Like us, they were once a small but growing tech platform rivaled by Siebel, the incumbent clunky desktop software.”
The ads will run on Facebook, LinkedIn and elsewhere online.
Moini said that the campaign is using kids to demonstrate the ease of use because Documate has literally had grade-school children test the software to refine its workflows.
“Documate’s functionality is very intuitive to anyone who uses modern internet tools,” she said. “Our earliest test users were my 9- and 12-year-old younger cousins.”
Most document automation software falls at one of two extremes, Moini says. At one extreme are products such as HotDocs that are powerful but need an IT team or technical expertise to use. At the other extreme are products that are easy to use but lack functionality.
Documate sees itself as the best of both worlds — easy to use but also incredibly powerful, Moini says.
“That’s why we’re launching this campaign to inform the legal world that there is a better way — we want to empower lawyers to do everything that an engineer or programmer can do without touching a line of code.”
Moini, a former Sidley Austin associate who often provided pro bono legal help to low-income individuals, originally launched Documate in 2017 under the name HelpSelf Legal. Its first product was an automated platform to help users file for restraining orders in domestic violence cases.
While Documate sells its platform to law firms, it provides free access to legal aid organizations, courts and other nonprofits.
Meanwhile, Moini says there may be more she emulates from Salesforce’s early marketing.
Even before that 2002 ad, Salesforce engaged in a guerilla marketing campaign around the theme, “The End of Software.” As part of this campaign, the company staged a mock protest outside Siebel’s user conference, with hired protesters carrying signs and chanting anti-software slogans as attendees entered and left.
Do not be surprised, Moini told me, if I show up at a legal tech conference this year and find Documate protesters picketing outside.

Digital Skills You Need as a Remote Worker
See on Scoop.it - Education 2.0 & 3.0
Jim Landis, 53, is job hunting after a year spent as his wife’s full-time caregiver. Because she has ongoing medical issues, one of Landis’ must-haves is the ability to work from his Denver home at least part-time. To make himself a stronger candidate for remote work, the requirements-analysis manager and software programmer paid roughly $500 for four online classes in advanced digital skills such as data science and data analytics. Landis says his previous employer wasn’t very cutting edge, so his digital skills lagged. “I wish I had been a bit more focused on my own interests and kept an eye on staying technologically current with the broader industry,” he says. Landis doesn’t expect the courses to lead directly to a job offer, “but if a hiring manager is thinking about moving to a new technology in the future, being able to say I have course work — that will get me some points,” he notes. Brushing up on digital skills is a smart move if you want to work remotely in your 50s or 60s. That’s true whether you hope to get hired as an employee who works remotely, or you want to get freelance jobs that let you work from home. “It comes down to making a living. I also have a component of fear. I’m afraid of being left behind by technology.” To stand out at a time like today when the demand for remote-based jobs outstrips the supply, it helps to be competent with the digital tools necessary for success as a remote worker. These include the latest applications for communicating and collaborating with managers and teammates, regardless of where they’re based. Apps for Remote-Based Work Older workers can possess all the qualities that make them a great fit for remote work and not get an offer if they aren’t up to speed on popular apps for sharing files, participating in video chats or communicating with co-workers. A younger candidate might be less qualified, but if that person can use the tools and speak the lingo, it can give an employer peace of mind, says Laurel Farrer, a remote work strategist and founder of the Remote Work Association, Farrer, Kate Lister (a long-time remote-work analyst and president of Global Workplace Analytics) and other experts group must-have digital skills for remote work into four categories: File-sharing platforms that let coworkers upload and share work-related documents, including apps such as Google Drive, Dropbox and Box. Videoconferencing applications such as Zoom, BlueJeans, me, Skype and WebEx. Enterprise communications platforms that have taken email’s place as the main source of interoffice communication, including Slack or Microsoft Teams. Remote workers can use the platforms to exchange public or private messages with individual coworkers or groups and search old messages (like a Facebook newsfeed but for the workplace). Most communications platforms connect with other workplace apps so remote workers can share files and calendars or participate in video chats. Collaboration apps that make it easier for people on a team or project to work together, including project management applications such as Basecamp, Asana and Trello. Collaboration apps typically include some type of shared project checklist so team members can see who’s responsible for what and check off tasks as they’re finished. At Dell Technologies, for example, six out of 10 employees of all ages work remotely at least one day a week in a typical month. When they work remotely, employees stay in touch through Skype, Zoom, Slack and Chatter, an enterprise communications platform owned by Salesforce. “We strive to make the process of leveraging flexible and remote options easy and simple for all of our employees,” says Mohammed Chahdi, Dell’s HR service director. Independent contractors who are savvy about digital tools find that expertise beneficial in landing assignments. Working From Home With Digital Skills Take Lee Ann Harris, 59, who works from an office she set up in a spare bedroom of her Sunnyvale, Calif. home. Since leaving a job as a senior director of clinical operations for a medical device manufacturer five years ago, Harris has crafted a livelihood out of doing a variety of contract work. Harris consults for a few medical device companies on training and regulatory compliance issues, and got a notary public license to do home loan signings and similar work. She uses conference-calling services and file-sharing platforms such as Dropbox with all her clients. She also uses Google’s office apps suite, including Google Docs for writing and Google Sheets for spreadsheets. “It comes down to making a living,” she says. “I also have a component of fear. I’m afraid of being left behind by technology.” Along with the basics, people interested in remote work need to keep up with digital skills unique to their profession. Prior to leaving her full-time job, Harris dabbled in interior design as a hobby. After quitting, she completed an online interior design certification program to become an interior decorator. She followed that up by teaching herself a few computer-aided design (CAD) programs in order to show interior design clients what their spaces would look like after a remodel. “I’d never done any kind of computer-aided drawing in my life. It was a lot of fun,” Harris said. Getting Your Boss to Let You Be a Remote Worker If you’d like to work remotely with your existing office job, ask your manager during a routine performance review or a check-in about career goals, says Paul McDonald, senior executive director for Robert Half, a global staffing firm that places professionals into temporary and full-time positions, including hybrid or fully remote jobs. And if your company already offers remote work, let a supervisor know that it’s something you want to map yourself toward doing, McDonald adds. He also suggests taking advantage of employer-offered training to pick up needed digital skills. To find remote-work digital training on your own, McDonald says, look into courses available on online-learning sites such as LinkedIn Learning (previously known as Lynda.com) and Udemy. DIY types can teach themselves through free online resources offered by app developers, including training videos, step-by-step instructions and on-demand classes. Examples include Microsoft’s on-demand end-user training videos for Teams, the Slack Foundry tutorial app, Zoom’s instructor-led weekly online training classes, and  free video lessons for adult learners that Google offers for its office apps suite, including Docs, Sheets and Slides. Learning Digital Skills at Community Colleges Some community colleges offer training on in-demand digital skills, in some cases, partnering with tech companies to train educators. Classes and costs vary by institution. In April, Google teamed up with the Coalition on Adult Basic Education to train community college teachers and other educators countrywide how to impart digital skills to adult learners, part of the tech giant’s ongoing Applied Digital Skills initiative. In 2018, Facebook said it would work with community colleges and other local groups in 30 cities, including Houston, St. Louis, Des Moines and Greenville, S.C., to develop classes on coding, digital marketing and other skills. Remote work’s popularity has also led to startups offering specialized remote-work training programs for companies and individuals. Workplaceless has a self-paced remote-work certification course costing $500. The full course, which can take up to a year to complete, covers seven topics, including productivity and time management, teamwork and critical thinking. Some nonprofits also offer digital skills training for older workers who can’t afford classes. One is Senior Service America, which runs programs to connect low-income and disadvantaged adults with prospective employers. By Michelle V. Rafter Michelle V. How to configure Salesforce Customizable Rollups to roll up contact soft credits to Households
Tumblr media
My org cut over from Raiser's Edge to Salesforce in January 2018, and one of the pain points we encountered early on was that donation soft credits were recorded at the contact level but not at their household account level. A structural solution to this issue became available with the launch of NPSP Customizable Rollups in June 2018, and I'm now in process of building them out for my org. The process was confusing at first, but once I figured it out it was surprisingly straightforward and easy to do. This blog will lay out the process in concise and easy-to-follow steps.
What's a soft credit?
Before diving into the steps, a quick review of terminology.. Soft credits are when a donor is credited with a donation that they didn't actually write the check for. A common example is when the check comes from a family foundation or donor advised fund. The hard credit for that donation belongs to the entity that sent the check, but the soft credit goes to the donor who directed them to cut that check. Other examples can include matching gift campaigns or crowdfunding efforts. Guidelines for what gets counted as a soft credit vary at different nonprofit organizations, and consequently Salesforce provides some flexibility around how to configure them as referenced in the documentation on Soft Credit and Matching Gift Setup.
Contact soft credits vs. Account soft credits
A key concept that tripped me up at first is the distinction between Account Contact Soft Credits and Account Soft Credits. Finding this description in the NPSP Soft Credits Overview documentation was my aha moment where how to do this really clicked: "If you enable Customizable Rollups, you can create Contact Soft Credit rollup fields at the Account level. ... With Account Contact Soft Credits, it is now possible to see the total giving for all Household members."
In short, Account Contact Soft Credits are exactly what I wanted to configure. Account Soft Credits on the other hand are a very different thing, they're an entirely separate feature which enables directly soft crediting an Account for a donation made by another entity.
On to the tutorial
Based on the aforementioned aha moment, and on information gleaned from each of the articles linked to above, it dawned on me that the process of configuring Salesforce Customizable Rollups to roll up contact soft credits to Households is really quite straightforward:
Create new custom fields on the Account object
Add those fields to the desired page layouts
Configure customizable rollups to populate data to those fields
1. Create new custom fields on the Account object
First step in creating any customizable rollup is to create a field to populate the field to. In this case I'm creating fields on the Account object which mirror existing fields on the Contact object, so I just place two windows side-by-side - both in Setup - Object Manager, one to reference the existing Contact fields and the other to create new corresponding Account fields of the same field type. Then just copy-paste the title over, mirror the other details, save, and repeat for the remaining fields.
Tumblr media
2. Add those fields to the desired page layouts
In Setup - Object Manager - Account, open the page layouts that you want to display Soft Credit info on and add them to the page layout. In the example here, I've created a new section on the page titled Soft Credit Totals and dragged the fields into them. If you want this to mirror how it's setup on the Contact page layout, you could also pull that up in another window and mirror the setup.
Tumblr media
3. Configure customizable rollups to populate data to those fields
Now to configure the Customizable Rollup, would you believe that I'm about to tell you that's as easy as pulling up the existing Contact rollups in one window and mirroring the configuration in another window for new Account rollups? Because it's actually that easy. In NPSP Settings - Donations - Customizable Rollups, click Configure Customizable Rollups, then New Rollup. Target Object = Account, Target Field = a field you created in Step 1, Rollup Type = Opportunity -> Account (Contact Soft Credit). All other settings should simply mirror the Contact rollup in your other window.
Tumblr media
Conclusion
That really doesn't look so hard, does it? I'm here to tell you it wasn't. Now go take two hours to implement it at your org and don't keep your co-workers waiting like I did (sorry Bekka).
