Samuel Whitbread (18 January 1764 â 6 July 1815) was a British politician.
âŚ
Whitbread was elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Bedford in 1790, a post he held for twenty-three years. Whitbread was a reformer â a champion of religious and civil rights, for the abolition of slavery, a proponent of a national education system and, in 1795, sponsor of an unsuccessful bill for the introduction of minimum wages. He was a close friend and colleague of Charles James Fox. After Fox's death, Whitbread took over the leadership of the Whigs, and in 1805 led the campaign to have Henry Dundas, 1st Viscount Melville, removed from office.
Whitbread admired Napoleon and his reforms in France and Europe. He hoped that many of Napoleon's reforms would be implemented in Britain. Throughout the Peninsular War he played down French defeats convinced that sooner or later Napoleon would triumph, and he did all he could to bring about a withdrawal of Britain from the continent. When Napoleon abdicated in 1814 he was devastated. Whitbread began to suffer from depression, and on the morning of 6 July 1815, he committed suicide by cutting his throat with a razor.

Who Is Leopold? (Part 5)
Who Is Leopold? (Part 5)

While he was in Paris, Leopold renewed his friendship with Hortense and visited her frequently in her blue boudoir on the Rue Cerutti. On 25 April he wrote to his sister Sophia: âThe Tsar is going to England, and I am very tempted to make the journey, because there will be a great many festivities. But it would cost too much.â
By then, however, the Tsar had been receiving letters from his sisterâŚ

One of the reasons that Princess Charlotte's social circle was regulated with increasing care by her father and his agents during the early stages of the Regency was that she had begun to fall under the influence of political operatives like the Whig brewer Samuel Whitbread, and the Radical lawyer Henry Brougham.Â
The latter particularly appreciated the potential value of such an ally and consequently exhibited little compunction about manipulating situations so as to ensure maximum influence with the young princess. Ambitious politicians were all too glad to enlist the princess - whether she was aware of the exploitation or not - in their various campaigns to strengthen their own positions while embarrassing and discrediting the Tory government. [...]Â
Examination of the historical record reveals that almost from the beginning Charlotte was made a pawn in games played, often for very high stakes, by persons who held little regard for her, her reputation or her overall well-being.

Might I ask what your opinion of Napoleon Bonaparte is, your highness?
The upstart Corsican? Faith, I dare say, in the list of the worst people God Almighty ever formâd, the tyrant places somewhere between Caroline and Samuel Whitbread.

The Whigs Are Against The Dutch Marriage But, despite the freedom that it promised, Charlotte's enthusiasm for her engagement was waning, and this was not just due to the attraction of Prince August, or the discovery that her betrothed was a callow, scruffy boy who could not even hold his liquor.

Whitebread
HistoryÂ
In 1742 Samuel Whitbread formed a partnership with Godfrey and Thomas Shewell and they acquired a small brewery at the junction of Old Street and Upper Whitecross Street and another brewhouse for pale and amber beers in Brick Lane, Spitalfields.Godfrey Shewell withdrew from the partnership as Thomas Shewell and Samuel Whitbread bought the large site of the derelict King's Head brewery in Chiswell Street in 1750.Â
The new brewery was for the production of porter, and was renamed the Hind Brewery after the Whitbread family coat of arms. From the outset, Whitbread was the leading financial partner, and solely responsible for management, and in 1761, Whitbread acquired Shewell's share of the business for ÂŁ30,000.
It was the largest brewery in the world by the 1780s. In 1796 the company produced 202,000 barrels of porter. The firm struggled after the death of Samuel Whitbread Sr, and saw ownership transfer to his son, also called Samuel Whitbread.Â
The company adopted the name Whitbread & Co Ltd in 1799.The company was first listed on the London Stock Exchange in 1948. Â Between 1961 and 1971, Whitbread's output increased from 2.1 to 7.4 million hectolitres and it became Britain's third-largest brewer by output. In 1972, Whitbread became the initiating sponsor of the Whitbread Round the World Race (now called the Volvo Ocean Race), a sailing yacht race around the world held every three years. Whitbread sponsored the race until 2001.Whitbread acquired a 20% stake in TVS for ÂŁ6.5M from European ferries in April 1984. Whitbread Group Plc decided in 2001 to sell all its breweries and brewing interests (Whitbread Beer Company) to Interbrew, now known as InBev.
Whitbread-branded alcoholic beverages are still available in the UK, such as canned Whitbread bitter, but these are not produced by InBev, merely produced under licence by other producers. InBev controls the use of the Whitbread brand, and the hind's head logo, for use on beverages. In 2002 Whitbread sold its pub estate, known as the Laurel Pub Company, to Enterprise Inns. The Whitbread & Co brewery building at 52 Chiswell Street in London still survives, although beer ceased to be brewed there in 1976 and it is now a conference and events venue. Still named "The Brewery", it was part of the Earls Court and Olympia Group from 2005 to 2012, where it was subsequently sold to a private investor. In 2005, it moved its core operations from CityPoint in central London, to Oakley House in Luton, and then, in 2006, to larger offices at Whitbread Court in Dunstable (previously used by the now defunct Whitbread Restaurants Company) in a bid to reduce costs.Â
In 2006, it went on to sell 239 of its 271 Beefeater sites to Mitchells & Butlers. In January 2010, Whitbread introduced a new corporate logo, and replaced the tagline "welcome with a smile" with "Eat, Sleep and Drink".In 2013, as part of the 2013 meat adulteration scandal DNA tests revealed that horsemeat was present in some meat products sold in outlets owned by Whitbread.Ready packed meal firm Findus, Compass Group was the world's biggest catering firm at the time, and Whitbread, which was at the time Britain's biggest hotel group was indicted for illegally selling concealed horse meat in food products. In a public letter later that day, 11 firms, including Tesco and Asda, said they shared shoppers' "anger and outrage". Whitbread vowed to remedy the unacceptable situation on 26 February 2013.

Cafe Find: Barrel One Sydney
The flowers are fresh, the coffee is hot and the banter is rolling. At Barrel One Sydney, a coffee-roaster-cum-cafe, thatâs about all it takes.
Daniel Agapiou had been in the coffee game for a while before he decided to open his own cafe, in September 2017. The space â parked in Brookvale, in the industrial northern beaches pocket of Sydney â functions (and has for three years) as the dispatch centre for the roastery; the scales, bags, and barrels of beans strewn throughout are proof of that. Agapiou didnât want to mess too much with that vibe, aiming to create an accessible space where coffee (single origin, drip, espresso blends, filter) is expertly crafted and velvety milk poured with aplomb. âKitchenâ is a generous term for the culinary area â itâs more of an assembly line of Brooklyn Boy bagels, Butter Boy pastries, and toasties, with recipes created by Melbourneâs Maker & Monger (including a pastrami sandwich, made with meat from a Manly diner). Barista Reggie and co-owner Samuel Graham complete the team.
The crowd is a mixture of local entrepreneurs, trades- and craftspeople, and young professionals. They mingle in the cavernous white warehouse, designed by Agapiou and his mate Taylor Heywood of Taylor Made Design. The aesthetic channels Agapiouâs soul-searching trip to New York in 2017, where he visited coffee pals and their roastery-cafes in Brooklyn and Williamsburg. (Think exposed insulation, metal work, and an unironic minimalism.) Milk crates function as tables; bar stools sit aside the roller-door entrance or up at the concrete-slab bar. Itâs both crisp and toasty, with a vertical garden, a neon sign nodding to Stranger Things, and wood touches by Porter + Maple (and Agapiouâs father, Steve) thrown in the mix.
People loiter, waiting to collect their Joe â often in KeepCups. Locals drift in and out, as is the way on the northern beaches, stopping to say hello and promising to be back soon. Thereâs a basketball hoop outside too, for when it gets to that time of afternoon. Meanwhile, the beans grind onward and the day steams ahead.
