The only sound Hilda could hear in the darkness was a quiet, uncomfortable murmuring, punctured by sharp, laboured breaths. Gingerly, she stepped closer to the bedside; long-adjusted to the midnight dark, her eyes glanced over crumpled sheets, worry growing with each passing moment.

Finally, they found her mum. Hilda sucked in a breath; Johanna was tossing and turning, her eyes screwed tightly shut, muttering half-whispers about sea monsters and not wanting something and half-a-dozen other things that Hilda didn't understand. But what she did understand, the thought making her chest clench, was that her mum was having a nightmare.

"Mum?" she tried gingerly, worry rising in her voice. All she got in reply was another ruffle of messy duvet, and more pained dream-whispers. So she took a deep breath, stepped right up to her mother's side, and tried again. "Uhh, Mum?"

Johanna breathed in sharply, her eyes snapping open. For a moment, she didn't seem to notice her daughter; her hands shifted, making deep dents in the mattress as she pushed herself up, chest shuddering. But then her eyes focused down, adjusting to the darkness, and she wiped them with a quiet sniffle before looking over and down.

"Hilda?" she breathed softly, a worry matching her daughter's settling alongside the lingering pain in her eyes. "Is everything alright?"

"Ummm, you..." Hilda trailed off, unsure if she should press about what she'd seen; she didn't want to force her mum to reveal whatever had been going on that dream, to pry into the things she knew Johanna tried not to worry her with. So after a beat, she thought better of it, settling on a quiet white lie. "I... I had a bad dream."

"Oh, sweetheart," her mum sighed softly, the tension immediately melting away. She patted the bedside, care rising in her expression. "Come here?"

Hilda did, pulling herself up onto the old, comfy double bed. She fell softly against her mum's side, feeling more than seeing one arm reach around her and squeeze just a little tigher than usual. She reached out in response, squeezing back, and felt her mum's heart slow through her pajamas.

For a moment, they just stayed like that, Hilda listening to her mum come down off the edge of fear and worry that one cruel dream had thrown at her. And in turn, she felt a rise of quiet warmth in her chest, and knew she wasn't the only one.

"Is it okay if I stay here for the rest of tonight?" she asked softly, getting another squeeze in response.

"Of course it is, sweetheart," her mum leaned down, gently kissing her forehead, "always."

And no more bad dreams would come to either that night.

Johanna Hilda and Kaisa for the character bing, and then how about Vee from the owl house?

Johanna:

I really do love her, especially in Season 1 (although she has a couple of really good episodes in Season 2 as well - the Yule Lads and the Deerfox come to mind) - she's genuinely the best fictional parent in any media. I wish that had stayed true (so I could have ticked "she's never done anything wrong") but overall I still love her to bits. I also went back and forth on whether "she works better as part of a dynamic" should be ticked, but as much as I love her in her own right, the best thing about her is her relationship to Hilda IMO :))

Hilda:

You know I love her so much; we're literally talking about my favourite character of all time. I want to hold this child and take her on adventures because I relate to her far too much and I love her to bits. I've ticked that she gets done dirty really just because I'm very picky about content with her - there are a couple of AUs I actively avoid and some really bad takes I've seen. But ehh, people have different opinions, and that's fine; either way, you know I love Hilda and think she has done nothing wrong, ever <3

Kaisa:

I ticked "she got too much screen time" just because IMO she shouldn't have been in Mountain King. Apart from that, I really love Kaisa, and I really hope we get to see more of her in Season 3. I think she's the character I most relate to, just because of how much her avoidance of Tildy and her feelings of faliure around being a witch resonate with my own experience. The fic that has the most of me in it, Rise Again, I wrote specifically exploring those feelings through Kaisa.

Vee:

I don't have any super strong opinions about her, but I think she's neat :)) I really hope we get to see more of her, and especially I want her to realise that Luz didn't have the life she did at home, but we'll see. For now, I just kinda wanna boop her nose XD

This is my baby. I've been working on this for the past month or so. It's a 6 chapter story (might turn them into 8) and I'm just halfway through the second chapter asdfghjkl but I have the entire outline of the fic written down and I can't wait to share this story! I'm super excited but super scared because multi-chapters are hard D: I'm going to publish it once I have it all written.. which, hopefully, won't take me too long 😅

What I can say is that this fic is going to be my version of S5. It's byler centric but there's going to be tons of willel too 🤧

I can't really give you the summary (because I'm still trying to figure out how to write it without spoiling too much asghllk) BUT HERE'S A VERY LONG SNIPPET FOR YOU 💛

“Do you think he’s coming back?” Will asks. El turns to look at him and her voice carries a heaviness he hasn’t heard in a year. “Do you feel him?” His hand instinctively goes to the back of his neck. There’s no shiver, no goosebumps warning him that something is wrong. There’s no weird feeling telling him he can feel him, because he can’t. Vecna’s been silent for over two years. “No,” he replies. “I can’t. It’s just a sensation, but I can’t feel him.” “It’s probably the anniversary effect,” she replies, hand slipping into his. He holds it tight and finds the strength he needs in his sister’s hold. “You’re probably right,” he replies. “Halloween has never been the nicest holiday for me. Or the week right after it.” “Don’t worry. You have all of us to support you this week,” she says and giggles at her own thoughts that she quickly decides to share. “And you’ll definitely have Mike.” Will rolls his eyes and El pokes his side until she’s full-on tickling him. “El! Stop!” She giggles and he knows she’s had only a couple of drinks, but tipsiness looks good on her. She’s carefree and happy and giddy. Will wants to see his sister like this forever.
