Thinking about Hetty all alone as a ghost in the mansion for an indeterminant amount of time, no one to comfort her as she mourned her life and grappled with her own death and regret, or even show her the ropes to being a ghost.

And one day the three most bizarre men she has ever laid eyes on walk out of her basement and act like THEY live there in HER home?

I don't think she would have stood for that. Despite her position as a lone woman without even the ability to grab a makeshift weapon to defend herself, I do think she would have stood her ground and told those intruders to get the hell out of her house and leave her alone. Probably with several choice insults and curses thrown in that I don't care to imagine.

But after a moment of confusion on the strangers' faces, Hetty is surprised to see a deep sadness and sympathy in their eyes as realization dawns on them.

She can see them. She is one of them, now. Which means that she has died.

The little girl that they watched grow up, watched have her heart broken, watched be sold off into a loveless and miserable marriage and who they watched learn to treat others with cruelty and disdain - is dead. And she has been condemned, as they have, to wander these halls for an eternity.

She would be taken aback as they recognize her and offer her their condolences. She is cold when they ask her what happened, but she soon learns to appreciate the strange companionship, even if two of them smell like the dickens.

Trevor really wants one of the ghosts to say that he's their best friend because he's sad after Ari proved that he sucks balls as a best friend (seriously, the dude sucks and not in a good way).

So Trevor floats through all of the ghosts to ask if he's their best friend.

Hetty and Isaac are together when he asks and just blink at him like 'how dare you'.

Flower says 'all of the ghosts are my best friends'.

Pete says 'i don't choose favorites - we all are equal friends'.

Thor says 'best friend must love cod - Trevor no love cod'... 'no buddy, Trevor no love cod...'

That leaves Alberta and Sass, who both decide to mess with him because 'hey that's what Bros do, right? Right?'

And so they begin to prank him (obviously, it would have to figure out how) but instead of finding it funny (maybe at first, he does), he gets sad because... he's still reeling for his not-a-best-friend-that-sucks- and-he-deserves-better and maybe he blames himself, a little?

And they don't realize it until Trevor reaches out to Jay ... who is like 'no pants, my best ghost friend is Pete' ... and so they realize they let him down.

So then Alberta and Sass stage a fight over who's Trevor best friend and even though he figures it out, he can admit that only a best friend would be that ridiculous...

and that's how he ends up with two!

-pete and flower have a nice friendship because they both enjoy nature and pete loves teaching flower about different birds and plants and things (he sees her almost as one of his scouts and she looks up to him kinda like an older brother)

-hetty was so excited when alberta ended up staying as a ghost because there was finally another woman around and because she enjoyed albertas singing

-trevor is secretly invested in bodices and barons but pretends he just watches it cause it’s the only thing on and he hates it sooooo much

-hetty calls flower susan sometimes like how she calls pete peter

-thor wants sam and jay to have a kid in hopes they can see him just like hetty did

-alberta and sasappis be gossiping to no end

-pete and trevor are actually pretty good friends and watch 80s movies together cuz they remind trevor of his childhood and pete just didn’t have time to watch them when he was alive

the eldest four ghosts of the house being close is so dear to me. the idea that they’ve been there for each other the longest—that the boys even watched hetty grow up—is such a tender and compelling touch.

what’s also true about this friend group is that they only ever have one brain cell between them at all times, and it bounces between them like a ping pong ball. <3
