Looking at a timeline and watching the Land of Waves and Chuunin exams again (how far we've made it so far with the niece and nephew) and just realized how short of a timeframe Part I really is, that in Part I, Kakashi only had Team 7 for 6-7 months before it all went downhill/Sasuke left!!! I don't know why that blows my mind. SIX -SEVEN MONTHS! By the end of Part I to Shippuden and time spent with sensei/mentors, it's like:

Iruka/The Academy : 5 yrs

Kakashi : 6-7 months (months,people, months)

Jiraiya/Tsunade/Orochimaru : 2 - 2.5 years

When looking at it like this, I really think people/fans expected WAY too much out of Kakashi. He started with the traumatized-youth-of-the-year team and had only MONTHS to work with them and from the ground up. Subtract the time he was gone on missions, in the hospital and/or comatose (looking at you Itachi) and that gets knocked down to maybe 4-5 months. He spent less time with them than any other sensei and did a remarkable job for what he was given. I think all of this to say, give the man some grace. That was wild.

When all was said and done, what he did for this little rag-tag team of traumatized feral orphans + Sakura was more than amazing. SIX MONTHS, people, six months. Well, maybe seven, but still...let that sink in. I think people fail to acknowledge this when they call him a "bad sensei-" can't believe people are still doing that years later(!). Let any of the other jonin sensei do what he did in six months and with the team he was given - any of y'all try working with traumatized prepubescents and see how long it takes for them to work together?? I do every.single.day. They're all about survival and living in that trauma mind. Trust? What's that? Teamwork? Nope, gotta look out for me. Then you go and put them on a team with Captain Trauma, himself. Smart move Lord 3rd, smart move. Yeah, yeah, yeah I get it, only other Sharingan, control 9-tails, son of your sensei, blah blah blah. Poor Sakura, btw. Poor little thing didn't know what she had gotten herself into.

I dunno, I just don't think people ever see it from this perspective - that he literally only had them for months. Guy's team - already had a year together. Asuma's team - InoShikaCho were predestined wombmates. Kurenai's team - they were well-adjusted (Shino's the most laid-back person you'd ever find; just give Kiba a puppy; and who can ever get mad at Hinata, well, other than her family).

Traversing other corners of the interwebs and didn't realize just how much Kakashi hate dislike scorn "non-like" there is out there even now. It's wild. All this to say, just showing Kakashi-sensei some love. ❤️ and respect.

A pattern that I've seen in the Naruto fandom over the years, is that everyone wants their "favorite character" to be Sasuke.

What I mean by this is that when you see a rewrite of a minor character like Sakura, Neji, or anyone of the other konoha 11, its usually something along the lines of " oooh what if they left the village and got back at all the people that hurt them and joined the Akatsuki!!!"

You mean Sasuke? Why not just talk about Sasuke? Clearly you don't like your fave that much If their traits are so interchangable to you, and those traits also very clearly belong to Sasuke. So why not just discuss Sasuke instead?

One reason i can find for this, is that people Interpret Sasuke as slightly arrogant since we're percieving the story from Naruto's side, who sees everything Sasuke does as arrogant, because he didn't understand him and his goals for a large part of the story. But its also up to the reader to see things like these? Tbh i just don't get it. People hate Sasuke, but want all of their faves to be sasuke.

aside from the fact that everyone can't figure out the depth of naruto and sasuke's bond, it's genuinely so funny that on the surface, they know just how much those boys influence each other because kakashi openly says that naruto's driving force is sasuke then obito says that naruto was meant to be the pawn to test sasuke. it even came to the point that all you need to do is say their name and the other one would fucking react. orochimaru perfected that tactic and triggered feral naruto. they might not understand that bond but they know how it works on surface level. and they take advantage of it.

I wrote a post about heart symbolism [here] but I'd like to make a brief addendum because I've noticed a few more things.

During the conversation between Kabuto and Orochimaru where they discuss Naruto being responsible for making Sasuke reject his brother's words in the FOD and changing his heart/goals, Orochimaru states that he has to separate Naruto from Sasuke so that he can dye Sasuke in his own colors. This continues the pattern of Naruto's influence in Sasuke's life being continually juxtaposed/foiled with those desires of the people that aim to control Sasuke.

What's interesting about this particular moment is that the word Orochimaru uses to convey the figurative meaning of "having an influence on" is someru (染める) which means to dye.

And Kishi uses the pair of that verb, somaru (そまる) [the two words have the same root and meaning, the only difference lies in the grammatical voice, ie. "dye" vs. "to be dyed"], in Sasuke's monologue to have Sasuke describe how he had been tainted because Naruto became his weakness.

So this firstly provides further validation to Orochimaru's analysis of the dynamic between Naruto and Sasuke. Kishimoto likes making Orochimaru analyze Sasuke's feelings for Naruto and then confirming them through Sasuke himself — another example can be found [here].

It also adds strengthens the coherence between Naruto's being Sasuke's weakness and Naruto having an effect on Sasuke's heart. Because immediately after Sasuke talks about being "tainted" by Naruto, he states that Naruto made him feel relieved, with the nuance of the verb used [anshinshita ( 安心した) ; containing the kanji for safe/calm (安) and the kanji for heart/mind (心)] conveying that Naruto provided Sasuke peace of mind/kept his heart at ease.

And because Naruto and Sasuke are inextricably connected, it's no surprise that Naruto used the same exact word to describe the intense feelings of safety and calm that came upon him just by being aware of Sasuke's presence. The only possible outcome of all of this was always going to be Naruto and Sasuke coming back and finding their refuge in eachother.

KONOHA IS NOT A SMALL VILLAGE

Someone else touched up on this but I don’t tag my reblogs so I’ll never find it but like it befuddles me that we cycle through the same ten characters and ten side characters when Konoha is a huge village like just looking at the number of shapeless Shinobi in the war arc like that population has to come from somewhere right?

Like you’re absolutely joking me if absolute max of 50 of this horde of Shinobi are from Konoha (because at the end of the day, there aren’t that many named Konoha Shinobi alive at any given time, not when compared to this picture I mean for real each block here is probably fucking 100 people wide by idk 500 people long)

(The issue here is not the “lack” of named characters cause there are certainly MANY but rather the lack of unnamed characters or the lack of space in canon for unnamed characters you know what I mean? No way Kakashi and co are the only jounins in village. No way Kakashi only had like two teammates in ANBU when really there should be an abundance of people to run missions with and ANBU isn’t genin teams, so long as the job gets done it doesn’t matter if the team members have met before or even know of each other)

And yeah part of what makes KakaObi (and SasuNaru) so devastating is their shared history but imagine KakaObi rivalry as ADULTS, whatever the opposite of meet-cute is, as Shinobi of the same village who haven’t met each other before because do you really know every single person your age in your hometown? A village THAT big, a NINJA village, does not have only one (1) ninja school (imagine living in the bottom left corner of this image, the walk to school must be so long! Idc if you ninja run, what child has the mental capacity to hop over rooftops at 7am??? Certainly not Ino-Shika-Cho!) ((clearly Kishimoto never played simulation games like Cities Skylines or Oxygen Not Included because come on! The population does not meet canon requirements and for it to do so it has to outgrow having only one school for its children!! Also it just needs more children!!!))

Gay propaganda aside, just imagine the world-building implications. Isolated Uchiha clan further isolated by a school being built near their clan compound, act of malice or not, their kids aren’t welcome around the others anymore. Poor Shinobi children/orphans who live in the same district going to the same school versus rich clan kids going to a different school together. Remember in your hometown when you “graduated” to middle school, kids who didn’t go to your elementary school were icky or annoying or weird or lame? (The correct term here is new or maybe different but children aren’t usually so kind at that age) But ninja elementary school! No canon middle school or higher education of any kind unfortunately but what if they pair kids from different schools into genin teams? Maybe that’s how Kakashi’s team 7 comes to be (Uchiha massacre or not, doesn’t make a difference if the Uchiha have been super isolated what with the police force and their own academy), maybe Neji is somehow worse cause he’s never actually interacted with a non-Hyuga/non-clan kid before. This can apply to Minato’s team 7 as well, prodigy clan heir from fancy clan academy Kakashi paired with the runt of the Uchiha from insular Uchiha academy and idk Rin from whichever school is closest to her civilian house. Like Konoha doesn’t have cars or buses or trains (at this time and I’ve never seen/read boruto no thank you) and there’s not much room for beasts of burden so these children are WALKING EVERYWHERE thank you very much.
