Just over a week ago, U.S. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan boasted that, all things considered, things were going pretty well for U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East: “The Middle East region is quieter today than it has been in two decades,” he told an audience at an event hosted by the Atlantic.
That assertion tracked with the bench of top diplomatic officials focused on the Middle East—or lack thereof. As Washington worked to extricate itself from decades of costly wars in the region to focus on a revanchist Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and ramping up global competition against China, numerous key senior national security posts overseeing the Middle East have sat empty for months or even years. Few in Washington raised alarm bells about it. Those who did were, for the most part, politely ignored.
The massive assault on Israel by terrorist group Hamas—the deadliest attack Israel has faced since the 1973 Arab-Israeli War—has thrust the Middle East back to the forefront of U.S. national security. The Biden administration, caught flat-footed, has leapt into crisis-response mode. But the number of seasoned and Senate-confirmed top officials to lead that response is sorely lacking.
At the time of the deadly Hamas attack on Israel, Washington’s closest ally in the Middle East, the United States had no confirmed ambassadors to Israel, Egypt, Oman, or Kuwait. The State Department’s top counterterrorism envoy position has sat empty for more than two years, the top human rights envoy position—the assistant secretary of state for democracy, human rights, and labor—has been unfilled for the entirety of the Biden administration, and the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) has not had a top Middle East official in nearly three years.
These statistics offer a snapshot into how Washington’s hyper-partisanship is infecting foreign policy and serve as a preview of how numerous empty posts could hobble—though not entirely derail—the Biden administration’s ability to craft an effective response to the developing war between Israel and terrorist groups in the Palestinian territories.
“The State Department isn’t [the Department of Defense]: We don’t have weapon systems; we have diplomats, armed with experience and hard-won expertise,” said Alan Eyre, a retired senior State Department diplomat. “Not having Senate-vetted and -confirmed ambassadors in the field during a crisis is like fighting a battle with needed weaponry sitting in storage.”
The mostly empty bench is due to a nearly broken Senate confirmation process, where nominees have languished in limbo for months or even years due to the “new normal” practice of Republican senators placing sweeping holds on all nominees for different agencies over policy disputes with the administration. On the Pentagon side, hundreds of senior military posts are on indefinite pause due to Sen. Tommy Tuberville’s blanket hold on nominees over the Biden administration’s abortion access policies for the military—including senior officials at U.S. Central Command, which oversees the Middle East. At the State Department, Republican Sen. Rand Paul has held numerous nominees over access to documents on the origins of COVID-19, while fellow Republican Sens. J.D. Vance and Ted Cruz have also previously issued holds.
Republicans, meanwhile, blame the Biden administration for not working to meet them halfway on policy disputes and dawdling on congressional outreach and Senate Democrats for not prioritizing floor votes on national security nominees that could override these blanket holds in an otherwise jampacked Senate schedule.
The end result is an under-equipped team composed of many lower-ranking officials in acting capacities fighting the biggest fire that part of the Middle East has seen in years—a crisis that could derail the Biden administration’s efforts to normalize ties between Israel and Saudi Arabia. In public, administration officials insist their team is well-equipped to respond to the crisis and support Israel. In private, they concede that they’re starting this diplomatic offensive with serious handicaps.
All top Pentagon, USAID, and State Department posts, including ambassadors, require a presidential nomination and Senate confirmation. Unfilled posts are still covered by lower-ranking officials in acting capacities. But those acting officials don’t have the gravitas, legitimacy, or access in foreign capitals that a full-fledged ambassador has, no matter how skilled and experienced they are.
One senior career diplomat with decades of experience compared a well-rooted U.S. ambassador in a foreign capital to a seatbelt in a car: something that’s nice to have in normal times—until there is a major emergency, when it becomes absolutely necessary. On the crisis in Israel, the effects of this empty bench may be hard to discern from the outside but are still likely to gum up the works in Washington’s interagency process and hobble a more effective response in the region.
Sen. Chris Murphy, a leading Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, decried the lack of confirmed officials. “This is an all hands on deck moment in history, and the administration needs a Senate-confirmed American diplomat present in every capital in the region as soon as possible,” he said in a statement on Sunday.
The House side, which has no say over nominees but outsized power on any new funding the United States could prepare for aid to Israel, is facing a crisis of its own after a small faction of far-right Republicans ousted House Speaker Kevin McCarthy.
“I look at the world and all the threats that are out there. And what kind of message are we sending to our adversaries when we can’t govern? While we’re dysfunctional? When we don’t even have a speaker of the House?” lamented Republican Rep. Michael McCaul, chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, in an interview with CNN on Sunday. McCaul said Republicans needed to quickly elect a new speaker to begin ginning up support—both financial and political—for Israel, in response to the ongoing crisis.
The Senate Foreign Relations Committee, now chaired by Sen. Ben Cardin after Sen. Bob Menendez stepped down amid a corruption indictment scandal, is preparing to rush a confirmation hearing on Biden’s Israel ambassador nominee this week, three Senate sources said, though no official announcement has yet been made. Biden’s nominee, former Treasury Secretary Jack Lew, could face grueling questioning from Republicans on the Biden administration’s policies toward Iran, but Democrats want to expedite his confirmation, nonetheless.
A similar scenario played out more than two months ago when another crisis caught Washington off guard, that time in the restive Sahel region of Africa. In Niger, a military coup in July derailed the West’s burgeoning partnership with a West African government seen as central to counterterrorism campaigns in the region. The U.S. ambassador nominee to Niger, seasoned diplomat Kathleen FitzGibbon, had sat waiting in Senate nomination limbo for nearly a year. In a rare spurt of ex post facto efficiency, the Senate rushed to confirm her, but only after the coup leaders had cemented their grip on power.
Murphy and others in the Senate hope that Congress can set aside partisan politics to confirm senior diplomats for the sake of national security.

Your fingers slid across the crucifix that hung from your neck as you slowly approached the old church. You hadn’t been there in years, but at your mother’s insistence you decided your niece’s christening was the exception.
The instant you walked into the church your nerves fired up, little pin pricks that made your skin crawl. You weren’t sure if it was God smiting you from above or the old school nuns looking condescendingly at your slightly too short, and definitely too low cut dress that clung to your figure.
The old pew creaked as you sat down, the cool wood pressed against your thighs and you shivered slightly. The church smelled musty, old, but familiar. Your mother’s eyes caught the hem of your dress and she twisted her mouth in disdain.
“You didn’t have anything else?” She whispered “This isn’t the club, you know. This is God’s house! You aren’t supposed to be parading around on display like that,” she spat. You smoothed the material down your thighs, willing it to somehow grow longer.
Before you could brace yourself from the same barrage of words you were sure were going to come from your father as well, mass had started. A man stood up at the front, your brother and his wife cradled their newborn baby girl in front, her godparents sat to the side. You knew you should be focusing on your niece, it was her day after all, but when you looked up and caught the eye of the celebrant, it all went out the window.
He had dark hair, closely cropped, steely blue eyes, and even though he was cloaked in an oversized vestment, you could see that he treated his body like the temple he preached it was. Thick fingers wrapped around the Bible in his hand, a kind smile lit up his face as he spoke of the blessings of parenthood. The joys of raising a child in the church, to walk in and live in Christ. Verbiage you had heard hundreds if not thousands of times growing up.
You unconsciously shifted in your seat, pressing your thighs together to stave off the warmth that began in your toes and traveled north.
“May almighty God, the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit, bless you.” His voice washed over you, pulling you from your less than holy thoughts.
“Amen,” You muttered with the congregation. You stood up, eager to shake the uncomfortable feeling this church gave you. You silently waited as others passed you, searching hopefully for a break in the crowd, when you were stopped.
“I don’t believe I’ve seen you here before, I’m Father Barnes.” Your breath caught in your throat as you looked up and met the very eyes you had spent the entire mass getting lost in. He held out his hand and you shook it with a kind smile.
“Y/N. My niece was the one you baptized today,” You slipped your hand from his grasp. He pressed up against the edge of the pew as your great aunt, Agnes shuffled by.
“I don’t believe I’ve seen you at church before. Your parents are William and Cindy, correct?” You nodded and stepped out of the pew, following the young priest as he began to walk up the aisle.
“I, uh, church is complicated.” You breathed out, wringing your hands. You half expected him to tell you he was different and to give the church a chance.
“I understand. We all have a relationship with God, some choose to have that relationship in a church, some choose not to.” Father Barnes unlocked a large wooden door and pushed it open, gesturing you into his small office.
You took a seat in an overstuffed, puke green, crushed velvet chair. Gasping as you leaned back a lot farther than you gauged, your knees practically up to your chin. Father Barnes chuckled softly and pulled open a small closet door.
“Why aren’t you judging me for not coming to church and not being on 7 different committees, and basically being the polar opposite of my super fu-super religious parents, Father?” You chewed on your bottom lip at your almost swear, wishing you could sink back even further into the chair.
The young clergyman didn’t answer you as he slipped his white vestment over his head and hung it neatly in the open closet. You stole a glance at the way his black dress shirt clung to his body just so. The way his slacks molded to his ass and thighs. Father Barnes was, in a word, delicious. He moved to stand in front of you, leaning against the old desk, hands planted firmly on top.
“Because I was like you once. Fresh outta high school, I joined the Army with my best friend. Before that though I hadn’t been to church in years, didn’t even know if I believed in God. And then I spent 6 months in Kuwait. After seeing all that death, seeing friends die, I found comfort in God. And when I was discharged a few years later, I joined the seminary.” He looked down and unbuttoned the cuffs on his shirt, pushing the sleeves up to his elbows. Heat spread outward as his tattoos peeled out from underneath the shirt he wore, something about the move and his look feeling much more sexual than it should have in front of a priest.
You gasped softly as your eyes trailed up and down his forearms, admiring the work of art his body was. Literally.
“See something you like?” Father Barnes smirked and grabbed your chin in between his fingers, forcing you to stare into those steely blue eyes of his.
“I, uh, um…” You started and he chuckled softly.
“Cause I sure do.” He winked and released his hold on your chin as your mother rounded the corner.
“There you are!” She huffed, walking into the small office, standing next to you, her eyes bore holes into your skull as you sat there.
“We’re all heading over to the house for lunch, if you’d like to join.” She practically sneered. You gulped, and pushed yourself out of the chair.
“Yes. I’ll meet you at the car. I was just talking to Father Barnes about rejoining the congregation on Sundays. You met Father Barnes’ steel blue eyes, his gaze sent a rush of heat through your body once again.
“Alright,” Your mother conceded, turning on her heel and walking back up the hallway, exiting through the large door at the end.
“So, see you Sunday?” Father Barnes raised a brow in your direction and you couldn’t stop a smile from spreading across your face.
“Front and Center, Father.” You purred, stepping closer. You could hear a groan bubble deep in his chest as you let the scent of Pine and Musk overwhelm your senses.
Before Father Barnes could form thoughts that were appropriate for a priest, you had gathered your purse and coat and were standing at the door.
“See you Sunday,” You blew a kiss and winked at the stunned priest before making your way down the hall. You could feel his gaze follow you, and you wiggled your ass just a little, teasing him.
——
Sunday came all too quickly, and at the same time, not quick enough. You swiped on a layer of lip gloss, and adjusted the top of your romper. You wanted to give Father Barnes a tasteful glance at your cleavage, not have your tits on display for the congregation. It was still a church after all.
Your gold crucifix laid delicately against your cleavage as you slid in the pew next to your parents. Father Barnes had already started service, and you smiled softly as he grabbed your gaze. His eyes grew wide at your choice of outfit and you smirked as he stumbled over the Bible verse he was reciting.
You bowed your head, your eyes closed as you attempted to look focused on the Homily. But as interesting and attractive as Father Barnes was, sermons were just as uninteresting. You chewed on the inside of your cheek, trying to keep yourself from slipping over the precipice of sleep.
As the Homily came to a close, you found yourself shuffling along the worn carpet to the front of the chapel for communion. You followed your parents, almost obediently, keeping your gaze cast down to the floor until you approached the front of the line. You looked up at Father Barnes, feigned innocence clouded your eyes. You opened your mouth and accepted the small wafer, winking as he swallowed thickly. You whispered a meek, “Thank you Father,” as you retreated back to your pew.
As the service came to a close, you found yourself hanging back, almost hopefully, as the chapel emptied. Father Barnes approached you, you couldn’t quite put your finger on the look in his eyes, but it excited you nonetheless.
“Y/N, So good to see you!” He beamed, clutching his old, well-read bible to his chest.
“The service was great today, Father,” You smiled back, following him up the aisle to the doors. “Do you have a moment that I could talk to you, privately?” You whispered.
He nodded, opening the doors into the hallway, gesturing for you to follow him to that same cramped office as before.
“For you? Always.” He unlocked the door, setting his bible and service notes on the massive desk. He moved to the closet, slipping off the white vestment to reveal that same, all-black outfit that made you weak. He carefully hung it on a wood hanger and turned to face you. You shook your head, trying to clear it, and swallowed thickly.
“Everything alright?” Father Barnes leaned against his desk. You hadn’t moved from the doorway. Your eyes met his and you nodded.
“Yeah. Yeah. Just distracted by some personal stuff I guess,” You laughed softly and sat in the same overstuffed chair as last time. Father Barnes unbuttoned the cuffs of his shirt and began rolling them up his arms, revealing the beautiful, intricate line work of his forearms.
“Alright. What did you want to talk about?” Father Barnes shuffled through his notes from the service. He absentmindedly ran a hand through his hair, pushing the dark tendrils back. You chewed thoughtfully on your bottom lip as you stood up.
Father Barnes’ gaze met yours as you approached, standing close enough he could smell the sweet coconut of your shampoo. A scent that sent a shot of arousal straight through his body. You swallowed thickly as you played with the edge of his collar.
“Wh-What’s goin on?” Father Barnes chuckled uncomfortably, taking a step back. You followed him and cupped his face in your hands, pressing your lips to his. His lips stilled for a moment as yours moved insistently against his. You slid your hands to his hair, knotting the chestnut locks in your fingers and tugging softly. Father Barnes groaned softly and wrapped an arm around you. You gently licked at his lower lip, prodding him to open, he complied and you moaned as his tongue met yours. It was electrifying, the thought of doing something so taboo with Father Barnes. It made you feel alive.
Your hands slid down the front of his black dress shirt, and tugged it from his slacks. You were desperate to feel every inch of him. But he stilled. You pulled back, panting slightly, a smirk danced across your face.
“What is it, Father?” You whispered, a hand reached up and twirled some hair at the base of his neck.
Father Barnes stepped away and scrubbed a hand down his face.
“We-I can’t.” He sighed. Your face dropped, your eyes cast down at the worn burgundy carpet. The clock ticked as the two of you stood in uncomfortable silence.
“You should go.” He finally broke the silence. “We shouldn’t meet like this anymore, either. We can’t. I’ll see you on Sunday.”
You swallowed back the hot tears of embarrassment that pricked at your eyes. You quickly gathered your purse and started for the door.
“See you Sunday,” Father Barnes called from his desk. You nodded softly and walked towards the large doors at the end of the hall.
————
It was three weeks before you dared go near the church again. Confessional was held on Saturday night, you tentatively approached the church, stepping inside, your stomach churned.
The familiar smell of old wood, and must filled you with comfort as you stepped towards the confessional booth. You let out a breath, before speaking.
“Bless Me, Father, for I have sinned. My last confession was..” You paused thoughtfully, almost laughing when you couldn’t remember. “Many years ago..”
“I see,” The priest mumbled from his side. And you drew in a shaky breath.
“See, I’ve been having these thoughts about a man I considered a friend and a confidant. They have been incredibly impure thoughts, and I acted on them a number of weeks ago. He didn’t return my affections, and I haven’t been able to face him since. He was the first one in a long time who understood why I fell away from the church, and he helped me. A lot. Both personally and spiritually. I saw how good of a person he was and it made me want to be a better person.” Tears rolled down your cheeks and you sniffed softly, wiping your nose with the back of your hand.
“Is there anything else you wish to confess?” His voice filtered through and a fresh wave of tears streamed down your face as you shook your head.
“N-No Father. That’s all.”
Father Barnes swallowed thickly before he broke the silence.
“I see you are remorseful. But you did commit a sin in the eyes of our Father and must do penance to receive his forgiveness.”
“Yes, Father,” You whispered meekly, wringing your hands.
“I require of you 3 Our Fathers and 5 Hail Marys. As well as regular church attendance.”
Before you could open your mouth, he had already exited the booth, the door slamming behind him. You tentatively pushed the door open, hoping to spot him. But your stomach sank as you realized you were alone. You spent the drive home in silence. You didn’t sleep that night and were nearly late to mass the following morning.
You slid into the pew next to your parents as Mass began, breathing out a sigh of relief. Father Barnes looked haggard this morning. Dark circles under his eyes, and when he spoke, he didn’t have as much enthusiasm or that usual sparkle in his eye.
Communion came and you shuffled up to the front. Your eyes didn’t meet, Father Barnes’ and you held out your hand for the small wafer. The feel of his fingers touching your skin as he placed it gingerly in your palm was electric. You heard him stiffen as you placed it on your tongue and walked back to your seat. You spent the rest of the service with your eyes cast down, your hands in your lap.
“May almighty God, the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit, bless you.” Father Barnes’ bible closed with an audible thud and you glanced up.
“Amen.” You muttered with the rest of the congregation. You stood up as soon as the hymn ended, eager to leave the building.
“Can we talk?” A shiver crawled up your spine, and embarrassment reddened your cheeks as you turned to face the man behind you.
“Good Morning, Father.” You plastered a fake smile on your face as you greeted the clergyman.
“Can we talk? In private.” Father Barnes restated his question before you could put a thought together though, you had already agreed. You followed him out of the chapel to that same office. That same offending office you had been in three weeks ago.
You sat timidly on the edge of the puke green chair and watched as Father Barnes shut the door and began moving around. He removed his vestment, hanging it in the closet, and set his well-read bible and notes on the shelf behind his desk.
“Father, I-if this is about confession last night, I apologize. I didn’t mean to make you uncomfortable or anything. I just wanted to say I was sorry for what happened a few weeks ago but I couldn’t bring myself to face you and tell you.” Your head snapped up when he chuckled softly. You scowled at him, how dare he laugh when you’re here pouring your heart out!
Father Barnes didn’t answer, he simply followed his routine of rolling up his sleeves and leaning against the old desk in front of you. He smiled gently and tucked a finger under your chin, forcing you to look him in the eye.
“First, call me Bucky, when we’re here, I’m a friend, not a priest. Second, well..” He leaned forward and took your lips in a gentle, passionate kiss. You whined softly as his tongue traced your lower lip. He licked into your mouth as he pulled you out of the chair to straddle him. Your knees dug into the edge of the desk, the uncomfortable pain was the last thing on your mind as his hands ran down your back and grabbed 2 handfuls of your ass.
“Fuck,” You whispered as Bucky broke the kiss to trail his lips down the column of your neck, licking and sucking at the soft skin. Your hands tangled in his hair, tugging at the chestnut tendrils as a wanton moan escaped your lips. You ground your still clothed core over the bulge that was beginning to form in his slacks. Bucky stilled for a moment holding your hips in place.
“Fuck, doll, if you keep doing that I might not last long and believe you me, I wanna feel that pretty little pussy wrapped around my cock.” He nipped your earlobe, your hands trailed down his front, unbuttoning the black dress shirt, pushing it down his arms. He let go of you for a moment, only to toss the offending material behind his desk. But then his lips were back on your neck, hungrily kissing and sucking at the already tender skin.
Bucky stood up and carried you over to the couch next to the door. His hair was mussed, his lips, kiss swollen as he laid you down and slotted himself between your legs.
You started unbuttoning your sundress, when he stopped you.
“Let me,” His voice was gruff but his actions were gentle as he pushed each button through the hole, slowly revealing your body to him. When you were clad in a simple white bra and plain cotton panties, Bucky sat back on his haunches to admire you.
“God, you’re like a fuckin work of art, babe.” He grunted, leaning down to kiss you, dropping your dress on the floor. Your hands reached down, desperately seeking his belt buckle. You groaned softly when you felt the leather slip from the metal buckle. Bucky’s hands met yours and he quickly unbuttoned and unzipped his pants letting them fall to the floor with your dress.
“Someone’s a work of art,” You muttered as you trailed your hand down his chest and stomach, marveling at how toned his whole body was. You traced a nail across the linework of a tattoo that sat right on his left pec before dragging your hands back down and toying with the edge of his boxer briefs.
“You just gonna tease me all day, doll? Or are we gonna do this?” Bucky canted his hips forward, nudging your still clothed clit. You whimpered, biting your lip as a fresh wave of arousal shot through your body.
“Buck. Please.” Your nails dug into his shoulders, and you moaned against his neck as he repeated the action.
“Been thinkin’ about this pretty little pussy since I first met you,” Bucky drawled in your ear, he dragged his fingertips down your body, stopping when he reached the band of your panties.
“You gonna do something about it?” You mocked his earlier argument. His fingers curled around the waistband of your panties, bunching the thin cotton between his fingers. Before you could protest, he ripped the material, discarding it on the floor.
“Come here,” Bucky growled, wrapping his arms around your thighs, pulling you to him and kissing the sensitive skin. Breathy moans escaped your lips as he continued his ministrations.
“Oh fu-mmmm” You grabbed Bucky’s hair in between your fingers as he gently kissed your clit.
“Fuck, Princess, you’re so wet.” Bucky slid a finger inside your waiting heat as he wrapped his lips around your swollen clit. You nearly screamed at the sensations overwhelming your body.
He added another finger, scissoring you open, his mouth never leaving your clit. You thought you had died and gone to heaven when the coil in your belly snapped and you came all over his fingers.
“That’s a good girl,” Bucky smirked, licking his fingers with an exaggerated pop as he crawled back up to kiss you. You wrapped your legs around his waist, moaning as he licked into your mouth, usually, you’d find the thought of tasting yourself a complete turn-off, even gross. But something about tasting yourself as Bucky’s tongue explored your mouth turned you on even more.
You hooked your feet into the elastic waistband of Bucky’s underwear and pushed it down, freeing his strained erection. You gasped softly, he was bigger than you had imagined, thick, the tip dripped with precum as you slid your hand up and down his shaft. Bucky’s cock was, in a word, beautiful.
His large hand covered you and he kissed your cheek chastely before moving to whisper in your ear.
“I’d rather cum inside you, than on you.” A shiver ran up your spine, a soft whimper escaped your mouth.
“Do it, then,” You challenged him.
Bucky sat back on his haunches again, spreading your legs as far apart as they would go. He tenderly dragged the head of his cock through your wet folds, both of you moaned at the sensation. And finally, ever so slowly, he sank into you, filling you up, making you feel like you were about to burst.
“Oh fuck!” You moaned as Bucky bottomed out, stilling his hips for a moment, his lips met yours tenderly. He rolled your pebbled nipples between his fingers as he began thrusting. Your toes curled and you gasped against his mouth.
You whimpered a meek, “Faster. Harder.”
Bucky grabbed your calf and lifted a leg over his shoulder. The angle made him feel so much bigger, so much deeper. You were almost positive you wouldn’t walk out of this normally. Bucky’s hands dug into your hips as he thrust into you, almost animalistically. You cried out, fingers tugging on your nipples.
Your head was thrown back, eyes squeezed shut in ecstasy.
“You’re so fuckin tight, Princess. God, squeezing my cock real nice,” Bucky panted above you. A thin sheen of sweat covered both of your bodies when he pulled out suddenly. You protested at the loss of sensation until he flipped you over, one leg propped up on the arm of the couch as he slid back inside.
“B-Bucky!” You cried out, tears of pleasure streamed down your cheeks as you neared your second release.
Bucky’s hand traveled around your hips, the roughened tip of his pointer finger began rubbing your clit in time to his thrusts. And that’s when everything exploded. You swore you saw stars as your walls clenched down around him. Your fingers dug into the back of the couch and you couldn’t contain the shout that escaped your throat in a fit of passion.
“Ah fuck, baby, just like that,” Bucky cooed in your ear, his arms wrapped around your front and held you up as he found his own release. You moaned at the warmth that filled your belly, Bucky kissed your shoulder softly and helped you lie down on the couch. He lay behind you, cock still firmly tucked into your pulsing cunt.
“Holy shit,” You laughed, reaching down to Bucky’s hands on your stomach and lacing your fingers with his.
“Yeah..” Bucky chewed thoughtfully on his lip. You didn’t want to intrude, but the words left your mouth before you could think.
“Is everything okay?” You asked, you rubbed the back of his hand with your thumb. He didn’t move, didn’t say a word.
“I don’t think I can be a priest anymore, and after meeting you, I don’t know if I even want to.” Bucky squeezed your hand in his, taking your lips in a tender kiss.
“Wanna go on a date?” Bucky chuckled softly. You laughed, rolling over on the couch to face your partner.
“Only if you shower first, you smell like sex,” You chided playfully. Bucky’s arms tightened around you and you giggled through his assault of neck kisses.
“And then after, we can run away together, and live on the beach, and be naked 24/7, and fuck like bunnies,” Bucky muttered against your neck. You sighed in contentment, wrapping your arms around his neck.
“I like that. A disgraced priest, and his sinner girlfriend living on the beach, naked and fucking,” You laughed as Bucky placed another kiss on your lips, pulling you closer to him.

Good institute for DMU.
- Mashiur Ra year ago
One of the rare Institutes in Bangladesh which is contributing to it's society as well as to the country through it's sincere, honest and priceless dedication for uplifting the quality of ultrasound based investigation. And surely it is not one of those institutes which blindly go along the tide. Any health care professional, wishing for building strong basic as well as advanced knowledge of ultrasound, either for career as a sonographer, a radiologist or as a clinician, should take the courses available here in Shristy Institute.

I went there when I was pregnant. One of the renowned institution gave me a ultrasound report which was totally misleading with wrong information. So I went to Shristy. They helped me, gave me a correct report and councelling. I am really grateful to them.

On Monira Al Qadiri’s ‘Holy Quarter’ (Capsule 12) @ Haus der Kunst, Munich (2020-01-31 – 2020-06-21)
Author: Magda Wisniowska – Munich, February, 2020.
Discussing the future The exhibition opening of Haus der Kunst’s ongoing Capsule program of focused one gallery exhibitions of international artists was preceded, as is customary, with a roundtable discussion between the artists and the curators. There were the usual questioning relating to the motives, themes, and ideas behind the work and each of the two artists, Sung Tieu and Monira Al Qadiri had the opportunity to speak. It was when asked by one of the curators to introduce the themes of her work, Al Qadiri said something unexpected regarding her upbringing in Kuwait—and having also grown up in Kuwait, I found it immediately striking. Al Qadiri said that in her work she often uses tropes associated with Kuwait’s pre-industrial past—the desert, pearl diving, camels—because as a Kuwaiti of the post-oil generation, these feel foreign to her. She is, of course, referring to a very familiar postcolonial experience, where the cultural practices different to the coloniser’s normative perspective become exotic, so much so, that for the colonised population, the Western counterpart to their indigenous culture might seem more normal than their own. Yet the term she used was not exotic or foreign, but “alien” in the sense of ‘the extra-terrestrial’ or ‘futuristic.’ What ought to have been part of her cultural heritage, was as distant and unrelatable as future planetary forces.
The Local and the Philosophical I grew up outside Kuwait City in Fintas, in a newly-built modern block of flats close to the beach. Before it was demolished in the mid 80s, on the beach was a mosque and cemetery that we called “old” because it most likely dated from the 50s or 60s. Next to the mosque was a small harbour with fishing boats, around which sat elderly men, most former pearl divers, in small groups. One of these would bring his grandchildren with him and he taught us all how to swim by dragging a tin can in the water. This was 35 years ago. Roughly 35 years before, oil was discovered in Kuwait. In that short space of time, a new state was established, the old town almost completely demolished and a whole way of life destroyed. I recall this memory because the speed of change warrants our attention. Both the elderly man  and I were witness to an acceleration of the West’s project of enlightenment, not dissimilar to the kind described by Iranian philosopher Reza Negarestani in ‘The Labor of the Inhuman.’ His brand of accelerationism urges the speeding up of man’s self-overcoming of reason through a continual interrogation of the category of the human. Interestingly in relation to Al Qadiri’s work, this type of rational and experimental labor Negarestani defines as “inhuman.” I would say Al Qadiri’s practice draws on the inhuman impulses lying at the heart of one specific nation’s economic and cultural development.
Alien Technology Al Qadiri’s capsule exhibition at Haus der Kunst consists of two pieces. The first looms large right as you enter, next to the staircase. It is one of Al Qadiri’s Alien Technology series, a massive fibreglass sculpture covered in shiny black iridescent paint. The work’s bulbous shape, which on the one hand, recalls a mythical artefact from a long lost ancient city, and on the other, science fiction, derives from the rotating teeth of an oilfield drill bit. Considering the oil industry’s importance, not only to Kuwait and its economy, but generally worldwide, its shape is relatively unknown and thus lends itself easily to speculation. In its previous smaller incarnations, the work’s connection to the sea was more prominent, its queer symmetry resembling that of a sea urchin or mollusc, but even at the large end of the scale as seen here at Haus der Kunst, the finish of its surface is pearl-like, like one of those puddles in the street with gasoline rainbows.
Holy Quarter Her second piece is the video work ‘Holy Quarter,’ a large scale projection accompanied by a number of smaller glass spherical forms, their smooth surfaces marred - or ornamented, as the case may be - by spikes, nodes and tubercles. The video is of the desert, the so called ‘Empty Quarter’ encompassing much of the southern Arabian peninsula, spreading across the Emirates, Oman, Saudi Arabia, and Yemen. A landscape of ever-shifting sand dunes and gravel plains, its stark bareness comes as a shock even to those accustomed to the desert environments of Omani wadis, Saudi mountain ranges, or even Kuwait’s more modest ridges. As Al Qadiri shows, negotiating this landscape is profoundly disorientating. Early scenes of the cliffs at sunset are followed by views from above and within the earth, so that distance becomes uncertain and we can no longer tell the far from the near. The images are narrated by a disembodied voice, very slowly relating the tale of early 20th century arabist and explorer, Harry St. John Bridger Philby. In 1932 Philby set out to look for the mythic city of Ubar—for him, Wabar—but instead of finding the missing city, after many days of wandering he discovered what he thought was a volcano. In fact, he stumbled across the site of a meteor impact, the surrounding ground littered with black glass and chunks of iron meteorite. Al Qadiri’s narrative identifies the mythic beings of Wabar with the extra terrestrial nature of the meteorite. As the voice states, “We are Wabar, We are the body of dust… We crashed into the sand.” Philby is the “pale man” who “walked across the desert and disturbed our sleep.” In her narrative Al Qadiri also refers to the other famous shooting star, that is seen by the three wise men, and to the frankincense associated with them. Finally there is mention of the discovery of oil in the region, the “black pearl” that threatens the “cradle of life.”
Faster and faster When in his essay for Aesthetics after Finitude, Simon O’Sullivan questions Negarestani’s strategy of abductive interference, he asks how this might look like—if inhuman labor accelerates ever further beyond familiar categories and concepts, how can it be understood from the point of view of the human, who makes use of these categories and concepts? Negarestani finds Peirce’s form of creative guessing one such model, a kind of multimodal and synthetic form of reasoning that dynamically expands its capacities. O’Sullivan calls this “fictioning,” an experimental modelling of different realities that proceeds through imagining and imaging alongside more speculative reasoning. In her video work and sculptures, Al Qadiri produces narratives that  fictionalise reality, meaning that their speculation—their play of images and imagining—produces a different model of reality, one less familiar, alien, of the future. Or rather, they draw on the process of acceleration already present in the Middle Eastern post-oil realities to speed it up even further. As the voice of the Wabar in ‘Holy Quarter’ beckons, “So, come with us now, let us choose a different fate together.”

Best SAT Test Preparation Classes in Kuwait
Tumblr media
Most colleges and institutions base their admissions decisions on the SAT entrance exam. The College Board developed and delivers the SAT, a multiple-choice test that is taken on paper and pencil.
The SAT is used to assess a high school student's preparation for college and to give universities a single piece of comparative information with which to evaluate all candidates. Standardized test results will be compared to your high school GPA, courses you took, letters of recommendation from teachers or mentors, extracurricular activities, admissions interviews, and personal essays by college admissions officers. The weight that SAT scores are given during the college application process varies depending on the institution. Overall, the more college options you have the better your SAT and/or ACT scores. Hence, SAT test preparation requires proper material and help.
SAT exam in Kuwait has a similar format and requires the same kind of coaching as other places. Some good SAT classes in Kuwait include ILM Prep | Top GMAT & SAT Test Preparation Center, Score Plus, among others.
SAT preparation in Kuwait also has the same kind of requirement, where anyone can register and take the SAT; there are no particular criteria. However, the goal of the exam is to gauge college preparation. The SAT evaluates a test-aptitude taker's on two fronts: 1. What one has studied over the course of twelve years of school; and 2. Whether one would be able to finish a college degree program. The SAT does not emphasize memorization or rote learning. The SAT Test has a scaled score range of 200 to 800. The candidate's test score is unaffected by the SAT test date. A candidate P who receives a 400 on one test date will be given the same credit as a candidate Q who receives a 400 on a different exam date. However, a percentage score is provided to distinguish between individuals earning similar grades. A 60 percentile indicates that you performed better than the other 60% of test-takers.
To look for appropriate coaching centres that provide the required preparation, you can search for ‘SAT test preparation near me’, which can get you the required results. SAT coaching in Kuwait is aimed at the basic format of the exam that is usually followed. It prepares students for the exam, based on the high school curriculum that they have learned.
The information regarding SAT preparation center in Kuwait or in general can be received from the official board website. The College Board is a U.S.-based corporation, and as such, it is bound by U.S. laws, regulations, and economic sanctions. Therefore, unless specifically licenced or otherwise permitted by the U.S. government, College Board is banned from offering testing services to or accepting registrations from Sanctioned Persons. The United States government has identified individuals as Specially Designated Nationals and Blocked Persons, as well as people who live in specific locations, as Sanctioned Persons. The College Board or a U.S. financial institution may refuse to allow a Sanctioned Person to register or process payments on their behalf if they seek to do so. College Board must cancel the registration and might not be able to refund the amount if payment isn't banned.

How to Deal with Non-Muslims
New Post has been published on http://www.truth-seeker.info/jewels-of-islam/how-to-deal-with-non-muslims/
How to Deal with Non-Muslims
By Dr. Ali Al-Halawani
Any one can say or claim anything, be it true or false. What distinguishes the truth from falsehood is one’s practice and deeds. If one’s talk conforms to his/her deeds, one is considered truthful and vice versa. To be truthful, you have to walk the talk!
In the case of Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings upon him), it was not him who talked about or described himself. Rather, it was Allah the Almighty Who described him saying:
And We have not sent you, [O Muhammad], except as a mercy to the worlds (Al-Anbiya’ 107)
The Prophet’s mercy was not, in any way, restricted to Muslims. It encompassed all, Muslims and non-Muslims, humans and the Jinn, and even animals and non-living things.
He (peace and blessings upon him) showed mercy even to those who wronged him or attempted to kill him.
Below are some prime examples of the mercy shown to non-Muslim neighbours, relatives, fellow countrymen.
If you are a new Muslim facing difficulties dealing with your relatives, a young student and have non-Muslim colleagues, a professional wondering how to interact with coworkers of different faiths, these hadiths are for you:
Be kind to your non-Muslim relatives
Asma’ bint Abu Bakr As-Siddiq (May Allah be pleased with her) said: “My mother came to me while she was still a polytheist, so I asked Messenger of Allah, ‘My mother, has come to visit me and she is hoping for (my favour). Shall I maintain good relations with her?’
He (peace and blessings be upon him) replied, ‘Yes, maintain good relations with your mother’” (Al- Bukhari and Muslim).
Your non-Muslim family are hostile? Pray for them
Narrated Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him): At-Tufail ibn `Amr came to the Prophet and said, ‘The Daws (tribe) have perished as they disobeyed and refused to accept Islam. So invoke Allah against them.’
But the Prophet said, ‘O Allah! Give guidance to the [the tribe of] Daws and bring them [as Muslims]!’” (Al-Bukhari)
Exchange gifts
Narrated Ibn `Umar: `Umar saw a silken cloak over a man for sale and requested the Prophet (peace and blessings upon him) to buy it in order to wear it on Fridays and while meeting delegates. The Prophet (peace and blessings upon him) said, ‘This is worn by the one who will have no share in the Hereafter.’
Later on, Allah’s Messenger (peace and blessings upon him) got some silken cloaks similar to that one, and he sent one to `Umar.
`Umar said to the Prophet (peace and blessings upon him), ‘How can I wear it, while you said about it what you said?’
The Prophet (peace and blessings upon him) said, ‘I have not given it to you to wear, but to sell or to give to someone else.’
So, `Umar sent it to his brother at Makkah before he embraced Islam” (Al-Bukhari).
The Prophet (peace and blessings upon him) did not blame him for his deed.
The Prophet (peace and blessings upon him) accepted gifts from non-Muslims too. Al-Bukhari narrated that a Jewish woman brought him mutton which was proved later to be poisoned after he ate some of it. The Prophet pardoned her.
However, later on, when Bishr ibn Al-Bara’, who had eaten from it, died, she was killed for him.
Protect non-Muslims rights
A number of the Prophet’s Companions narrated that the Messenger of Allah said:
‘Beware, if anyone wrongs a mu`ahid [a non-Muslim enjoying the protection of Muslims], or diminishes his right, or forces him to work beyond his capacity, or takes from him anything without his consent, I shall be his adversary on the Day of Judgment” (Abu Dawud).
Narrated `Abdullah ibn `Amr: The Prophet said, “Whoever killed a mu`ahid shall not smell the fragrance of Paradise though its fragrance can be smelt at a distance of forty years (of travelling).” (Al-Bukhari).
Visit the sick
Narrated Anas: “A young Jewish boy used to serve the Prophet and he became sick. So the Prophet went to visit him. He sat near his head and asked him to embrace Islam.
The boy looked at his father, who was sitting there.
The latter told him to obey the Prophet and the boy embraced Islam. The Prophet came out saying:
“Praise be to Allah Who saved the boy from the Hell-fire” (Al-Bukhari)
Do business… why not?
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to do business and enter into dealings with non-Muslims. It was narrated that `A’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said:
“The Messenger of Allah bought some food on credit from a Jew, and he gave him a shield of his as collateral (rahn)” (Al-Bukhari and Muslim).
Respect for the deceased persons
Jabir said: “The Prophet and his Companions stood up for the funeral of a Jew until it disappeared” (Sunan An-Nasa’i).
A final word
The Prophet (peace and blessings upon him) treated all people well, including non-Muslims. Allah enjoined fairness, kindness, good treatment and rendering back trusts for Muslims and non-Muslims alike. The Qur’an says:
Allah does not forbid you from dealing kindly and fairly with those who have neither fought nor driven you out of your homes. Surely Allah loves those who are fair. (Al-Mumtahanah 60: 8)
We understand from this ayah that Muslims should be kind and nice to all peaceful people, Muslims and non-Muslims alike.
As charity begins at home, a Muslim, be it a born Muslim or a new Muslim should deal fairly and nicely with his fellows especially when they are family or neighbours.

Good morning! (Sorry I suck at blogging)
Hey guys! I’ve been kind of crap at posting for the past three weeks because I’ve been incredibly busy. I’ll try to summarize everything that happened in as much detail as I can, so get ready for a fairly long post.
Two Wednesday’s ago, I told you guys I was going on two different field day trips. The first one was a walking sex tour of the city of Copenhagen with my Psychology of Sexuality class. Copenhagen is a pretty sex-friendly place. One of the places I went to was where the first gay marriage took place, which honestly was very moving for me. We’ve come such a long way since 1989 and I couldn’t help but feel so much history in one place. We also went to a couple of the oldest porn shops, however many of them have closed down because of the Internet. We learned a lot about prostitution in Denmark as well and the history behind it.
It’s such a drastic contrast between the United States and Denmark regarding sexuality. Here, it’s prostitution is legal and seemingly accepted within the community. Gay marriage is also widely accepted and seen as normal among the citizens. And, according to my teacher, it’s normal to go home on the first date to have sex, which is not usually how dating works in America. To be honest, it makes me feel more comfortable with my sexuality here than I ever have in America. I don’t feel as judged here. Even though I’m surrounded by Americans who can be judgmental, whenever I’m out at bars or clubs, I don’t feel that worried about people caring how sexually active I’m not.
After the walking tour, I went with my Education Psychology class to an elementary school in Copenhagen, which was another eye-opening experience. The teachers were very lenient with the kids and never raised their voices. Some of my peers and I went to a music class where they were playing electric guitars, pianos and all sorts of other instruments. Everyone seemed to be having so much fun together. I learned later that the kids all begin to learn English by 1st grade, and start another language of choice in 5th grade. BY the time they graduate, they can speak 3 different languages (!!!). That completely blew my mind.
Two weeks ago was DIS’s core course week, in which we spend the week devoted to exploring parts of Denmark with the core course, in my case, Positive Psychology. The first part of the week we stayed in Copenhagen. Last Monday, my class went to a meditation center where we learned about mindfulness and meditation. On Tuesday, we did a walking tour of how environment can invoke positivity through beautiful, open spaces in the morning, and then went to the GAME center which tries to get sports to areas which don’t have as much money for stadiums and other necessities in order to play sports.
While I enjoyed the activities we did on Monday and Tuesday, I found Wednesday’s activity to be much more powerful, emotionally. We went to a drug rehabilitation center which contains a drug consumption room, which allows drug addicts to be observed by doctors in a safe space to do drugs. It was a very controversial topic in my class. However, I think this could be something that would really useful in the US, especially regarding the opioid epidemic. The drug consumption room has helped decrease the amount of used needles and bodies (yes, BODIES), found in the streets of Copenhagen. It has decreased illegal drug activity in the area as well. Apparently, pop-up drug consumption rooms have been in the US, however, they are technically illegal. It’s an interesting concept, which I would love to discuss further with people if they have questions!
On Thursday, I had to get up at 4 AM to catch a bus (which I missed, by the way) in order to get to the train station (I walked, if you were wondering) to get on another bus so we could drive to the Jütenland. We stayed in Aalborg, another city in Denmark. After arriving and grabbing lunch, we went to an an activity center in order to do some team building within the class. We played games such as human foosball, toilet-racing, and others. Have you ever seen those gigantic, inflatable balls that you can go inside and run around in? We raced in those. It was awesome. After that, we went to a community living center, in which a neighborhood of residents live together and act as a gigantic family.
Friday was definitely one of the most moving days I’ve had while I’ve been in Denmark. In the morning, we went to an open prison. When I say open, I mean there is no fence or cells. In fact, it really looked like a college campus with dorms that had kitchens. The inmates were wandering around, either heading to school or work. There weren’t any guards with guns or weapons. It was completely different than anything I had seen before and everyone in my class was completely shocked. They had even had a building where prisoners could be alone with visitors (including prostitutes!)
Afterwards, we were to a refugee center, where they made us all lunch, which was amazing. They had foods from Kuwait to Southern Africa. After a tour of the center, we sat in groups and did a narrative exchange in which they told us about their experience as refugees. They told us stories about not being able to see their families for years, the discrimination they’ve faced in Denmark, and the dreams they have to leave Denmark. It completely changed my perspective of Denmark and Danish people. I didn’t realize how deeply rooted racism was in this country until I talked to these people. I also never realized how ignorant I was of the refugee crisis. This summer, I hope to do some volunteering in the states in order to help refugees find jobs and places to live.
Finally on Saturday, we went to the Northern tip of Denmark there the Baltic Sea and North Sea meet. At the beach, we went on a mediation walk. No one in the class was allowed to speak to each other for an hour and a half as we walked around and decompressed. It was a beautiful experience that helped me practice mindfulness. I could even see where the seas crashed together in the middle.
Like I said before, I’ve been incredibly busy with school as we’re having midterms this week. I haven’t done too much exciting stuff. I went to the Rosenburg castle which was Christian IV summer home on the day Prince Henrik died, the Queen’s husband. While it was a really cool experience, everyone here has been mourning, so Copenhagen has been a little crazy now.
Hopefully this is a good summary of what I’ve been doing. Again, I’m going to try and get better at posting as midterms wind down and I’ll be going into a break soon. :)

Committee finds failure at the highest level on Uranium One
By Printus LeBlanc
A little known federal governmental body has been making the news a lot lately. The Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) will be the talk of D.C. after the Uranium One informant soon finishes his testimony. Doing a little research on the committee, it quickly becomes apparent CFIUS is a more significant problem than people realize.
According to the Treasury Department, “CFIUS is an inter-agency committee authorized to review transactions that could result in control of a U.S. business by a foreign person (“covered transactions”), in order to determine the effect of such transactions on the national security of the United States.  CFIUS operates pursuant to section 721 of the Defense Production Act of 1950, as amended by the Foreign Investment and National Security Act of 2007 (FINSA) (section 721) and as implemented by Executive Order 11858, as amended, and regulations at 31 C.F.R. Part 800.”
In laymen’s terms, it means the federal government can review the proposed purchase of any company in the U.S. if the new owner is foreign and it is believed the company plays a role in U.S. national security.
The committee is comprised of several principals from various government agencies. The members of the committee include:
Department of the Treasury (chair)
Department of Justice
Department of Homeland Security
Department of Commerce
Department of Defense
Department of State
Department of Energy
Office of the U.S. Trade Representative
Office of Science & Technology Policy
Other offices can be included, such as the Director of National Intelligence, when the situation warrants.
The committee has had some severe lapses in judgment that scream for Congressional action.
Magnequench
In 1995 a subsidiary of General Motors was put up for sale. The company, Magnequench made magnets out of rare earth elements. The car manufacturer used the magnets in airbags and sensors. The company would be bought by a consortium consisting of two Chinese state-owned metals firms, San Huan New Material and China National Nonferrous Metals Import and Export Company (CNNMIEC).
This drew the attention of Committee because Magnequench also had another client, Uncle Sam. Rare earth magnets are essential to almost every weapon, communication, and flight system the U.S. currently fields. The Congressional Research Service states the magnets are used in:
fin actuators in missile guidance and control systems, controlling the direction of the missile;
disk drive motors installed in aircraft, tanks, missile systems, and command and control centers;
lasers for enemy mine detection, interrogators, underwater mines, and countermeasures;
satellite communications, radar, and sonar on submarines and surface ships; and
optical equipment and speakers.
Simply put, the U.S. military runs on two commodities; gas and rare earth elements. When the Committee, under the Bill Clinton administration, looked at the sale of the company holding the patents of the magnets to a communist regime and military competitor, it still allowed the deal to go forward.
The sale happened despite the former Chairman of the Central Military Commission in China, Deng Xiaoping, expressing his country’s desire to corner the market in rare earth elements three years before the sale in 1992. Deng stated, “The Middle East has its oil, China has rare earth…it is of extremely important strategic significance; we must be sure to handle the rare earth issue properly and make the fullest use of our country’s advantage in rare earth resources.”
Following the sale, China duplicated the production line in China and proceeded to flood the market, driving any and all competitors out of business. Now, the U.S. military is wholly dependent on battle with systems stamped “made in China,” thanks to the Committee. Is there any wonder how China was able to steal U.S. designs for weapons systems?
Uranium One
Uranium One is the current scandal involving the Committee. Uranium One is a uranium mining company with operations around the world, headquartered in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The company runs two mines in Wyoming accounting for “20 percent of the currently licensed uranium in-situ recovery production capacity in the U.S.,” according to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
In mid-2010, Uranium One announced it reached a deal that would result in JSC Atomredmetzoloto, or ARMZ acquiring a majority share in Uranium One. ARMZ is a subsidiary of Rosatom, the Russian state-owned regulatory body of the Russian nuclear industry. Due to the sensitive nature of uranium, its potential application in fostering nuclear weapons, the agreement would need the approval of the Committee, which Secretary of State Hillary Clinton sat on.
Shortly after the deal was announced, former President Clinton gave a speech to Renaissance Capital, a Kremlin-tied bank, for $500,000, one of the most substantial fees he ever earned. The bank was also pushing the stock of Uranium One calling it, “the best play in the uranium markets.”
Before the deal was even announced, there was an FBI investigation into an American subsidiary of Rosatom, Tenam USA. The FBI had an informant inside, detailing multiple felonies, including extortion, fraud, and money-laundering. The crimes would make critical players in the U.S. nuclear industry susceptible to blackmail by Moscow.
With felonies being investigated and an apparent conflict of interest with one of the Committee members, the sale was approved. By 2013, Rosatom had full ownership of Uranium One and 20 percent of U.S. uranium supplies, which the U.S. already has to import.
Recently it was discovered, despite the Obama administration’s promise the uranium would not be exported, the deadly mineral was exported to Canada and then on to Europe and Asia.
Port Canaveral
In the previous two examples, CFIUS investigated and approved deals despite glaring national security risks. In the Port Canaveral example, Treasury Secretary Jack Lew couldn’t even be bothered to investigate.
In 2014, the U.S. awarded Gulftainer a 35-year lease to operate the cargo terminal at Port Canaveral, Florida. The problem is Gulftainer is a UAE-based company with ties to very shady people, and the port is literally “inside the wire.” The port sits between two Air Force bases, next to a Navy nuclear submarine base, and NASA’s Kennedy Space Center, all points of extreme importance to national security.
Gulftainer is a subsidiary of the Crescent group, a multinational headquartered out of the United Arab Emirates. The Chairman of Crescent group is a man by the name of Hamid Jafar. His brother is the person of interest. His brother and business partner is Dr. Jafar Dhia Jafar, an Iraqi nuclear physicist, the former Vice Chairman of the Iraq Atomic Energy Commission, and widely known as the father of Iraq’s nuclear program.
The Crescent Group also signed a joint venture with Russian Technologies (Rostec). Rostec is the parent company of Rosoboronexport, the exporter of the Club-K container cruise missile launch system. The Club-K is designed to look like an ordinary shipping container, except it has four cruise missiles inside. Russia has already sold the system to Iran, and Iran has practiced launching missiles from cargo ships. Robert Hewson of Jane’s Defense Weekly stated, “At a stroke, the Club-K gives a long-range precision strike capability to ordinary vehicles that can be moved to almost any place on earth without attracting attention,” when discussing the system.
Gulftainer also has ties to Iran. The company is a majority stakeholder and business partner in Gulf Stevedoing and Contracting Company (GSCCO), the cofounders of that company, Kuwait and Gulf Link Transport Company (KGL), have been investigated for money laundering to Iran.
Maybe nothing is wrong with this transaction, but the company seems to be at the center of an awful lot of nefarious actions, and the idea that Jack Lew didn’t even conduct a National Security Threat Analysis of Gulftainer screams “look over here.”
CFIUS handed over the nation’s manufacturing capability to China, gave part of the country’s uranium supply to Russia, and opened the door for hostile actors to come in the front door. Clearly the system is broken. Congress needs to launch an investigation into CFIUS and understand its weaknesses while putting additional safeguards in place to stop future damaging transitions.
