Artist-Designed Billboards Responding to the Mass Incarceration Crisis to Debut in Houston this Month
by Jessica Fuentes November 2, 2023
Art at a Time Like This (ATLT), a nonprofit supporting the presentation of art in response to current events, will debut a series of artist-designed billboards responding to the mass incarceration crisis on Saturday, November 4 in Houston.
Earlier this fall, ATLT, in partnership with SaveArtSpace, a Brooklyn-based nonprofit that brings art to nontraditional spaces using billboards, launched an open call for Houston-area artists to design these billboards. The Houston-based project is an expansion of 8X5, an initiative initially launched in Miami last summer, curated by ATLT co-founders Barbara Pollack and Anne Verhallen, and featuring works by Faylita Hicks, the Guerrilla Girls, Shephard Fairey, Sam Durant, Sherrill Roland, and Trenton Doyle Hancock.
We hope the following statistics will inform you:
● The United States has the highest incarceration rate in the world
● While the United States represents about 4.2 percent of the world's population, it houses approximately 20 percent of the world's prisoners.
● Between 1980 and 2022, the number of people incarcerated increased from roughly 500,000 to 2.3 million.
● Black people are incarcerated at more than 5 times the rate of whites.
● Spending on prisons and jails has increased at triple the rate of spending on Pre‐K‐12 public education in the last thirty years.
And in Texas:
133,800 people are behind bars, the largest prison population in the U.S.
Each year, at least 505,000 people are booked into local jails in Texas.
Harris County (Houston) jail holds approximately 8,000 people on any given day, the majority of whom are legally innocent, awaiting trial
Texas’s 242 county jails are already increasingly overcrowded, with more than 70,000 inmates. According to state data, there is a corresponding rise in jail deaths, suicides, use of force incidents and assaults.
Texas has 196 individuals on Death Row
Texas has the highest number of detained immigrants in the U.S.

Glass Ceiling Disco
Digital Mixed Media Glitch. Original .png submitted and not accepted to Pussy Riot x SaveARTSpace billboard campaign for 2022. Glitched and modified to fit your television screen.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Since it's creation, Glass Ceiling Disco has been exhibited internationally at SXSW, @TEDTalks, NFT NYC, Searchlight Atelier, multiple virtual and in person galleries and Fylthy Trash Art Exhibit in Los Angeles. The day it was at TED talks in Vancouver funnily enough, it was in LA also projected in an alley by a dumpster in LA to actualize the idea of "Empress Trash" on a international scale.
Glass Ceiling Disco is a vision of how crypto and nfts will help shatter the glass ceiling that many traditional markets and institutions have in place for women, PoC, LGBTQ and other marginalized populations. This piece I purposefully priced higher as part of the magic of it, because this piece is about my hopes of the crypto art spaces future in shattering glass ceilings of traditional art markets, not just for myself, but for other women and LGBTQ+ and trash/glitch/experimental art creators. It depicts my doc martens dancing on a bed of broken glass, which is what I see as the broken glass ceiling.
These docs I wear to every event I go to because they help me feel grounded and safe surrounded by strangers. As a survivor of childhood and domestic abuse, any tool to feel a little safer navigating the world helps, and these docs are like a safety blanket for me.
Further I chose the energy of joy to be in the piece, instead of critiquing how markets are still currently imbalanced for women artists as a whole, because it is the joy I am trying to manifest. The bright colors are the celebration and the glitch animation is the disruption which is needed of the systems for equity to happen.
While this work is still available for purchase, the message and ethos was heard and resonated instigating change for myself, the crypto art systems and focus, and beyond in ways I still can not comprehend. These two boots carried me from a relatively obscure underground artist to international recognition. I wonder where else these boots will lead me?
Some day we will dance on the glass to celebrate hearing the crunch under our feet.
In Kolaj 38's round up of News & Notes, Alicia Saadi's billboard installation in New Brunswick, New Jersey. Saadi recently took part in Kolaj Institute’s Collage as Street Art Residency. “In part because of what I learned in the residency, my dedication to hanging collage outdoors didn’t end there. When I heard about SaveArtSpace and their goal of transforming ad space into public art by and for local communities, I couldn’t think of a more perfect organization to help my work and message reach a broader audience.” MORE KOLAJ MAGAZINE ARTIST DIRECTORY SEE IT! The midterms are around the corner and we have a chance to make a real difference in Arizona, a critical swing state where reproductive rights have been curtailed and a Senate seat is in a toss up. Love these billboards—a collab between @lenawolffstudio @michelepreg @saveartspace @hopemengdesign . Link in profile if you'd like to donate to get these billboards up immediately in Arizona. One is already going up in Texas and at least 9-10 more are going up in swing states ahead of the midterms #letsgo https://www.instagram.com/p/Cj7GFU-u9jq/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
Art at a Time Like This Inc., in collaboration with SaveArtSpace,
In George Orwell’s 1984, the Ministry of Truth is a Panopticon propaganda machine, engaging in cultural gaslighting and misinformation that undermines the very nature of truth itself. Nowadays, we just call that the internet.
In October, Art at a Time Like This Inc., in collaboration with SaveArtSpace, borrows the moniker “Ministry of Truth: 1984/2020” to present 20 artists on 20 billboards around New York City, providing “a platform for artists to comment on the current state of US politics and increasing polarization just in time for the election,” according to a press release.
The project is sponsored by V. Hansmann, Jane Lombard Gallery, PPOW Gallery, Galerie St. Etienne, Guerrilla Girls, Broad Band, and Publicide Inc, with Hyperallergic as media sponsor.
So thrilled to be a part of the SaveArtSpace x Tumblr collaboration this year in Austin during SXSW.
This set of photos is from a newly developing project she calls TO THE FUTURE.
What does our future look like? This is often somewhat of a scary question in today's world. People in power are scary, violence is widespread, the earth is deteriorating, and citizens are denied of their rights all day, everywhere. This sounds a bit like a horror film, and I'm not denying that it feels and may be a reality of ours in the near future. But recently I have also noticed a lot of strength, resilience & solidarity from various communities. Maybe the future could be painted in a different way for us to ingest and imagine. People who are marginalized, who choose to express themselves in ways not defined in the barriers of socio norms, and those who can't fight against or prove to the masses their true self based on the way they look may feel pessimistic or at a loss for something to protect themselves. These are the people I want to help represent in the future. To show them in a light where they have flourished, risen & beat the hands that have pushed down their worth during the totality of their lives. What does this look like? It looks happy, it looks unique, it looks expressive, it looks cool, it looks free.
I want to work with those to help capture a portrait of them as this future self. Give them a space where they can feel safe, themselves, experimental & comfortable in; their normal, natural self.
This Summer, NYC’s Billboards Will Show Feminist Art Instead Of Ads
Beginning June 26, however, some of the billboards around NYC will swap out their traditional promotional materials for some freshly squeezed feminist art. The summer initiative, entitled “The Future is Female,” was organized by nonprofit organization SaveArtSpace, which frequently transforms advertising spaces into impromptu sites of public art.
As an arts organization, we feel that it is our duty to align and ally with the broader artistic community to create exhibitions that address intersectional concerns which can spread a message of progressive and positive social change and empowerment. (SaveArtSpace website)
