It’s World Wetlands Day! Wetlands are the kidneys of the ecosystem and are important in filtering the water to keep wildlife and humans safe 🌊 In Florida, 50% of our wetlands have been eradicated by modern development, and many of the half that remain are threatened by a variety of human behaviors. But there are so many things we can do to have a positive impact! 🌎 Here are just a few ways to help protect our wetlands: 1. Don’t buy bottled spring water. This puts strain on our springs. Opt for a reusable water bottle that you can refill with filtered water. If you simply must buy bottled water, choose filtered water instead of spring water. 🌊 2. Opt for reusable items instead of disposable items when possible. (Even when thrown away in the trash or recycling, those items still have a chance of ending up in waterways.) 🌊 3. People with yards/gardens: plant native plants and reduce/eliminate fertilizer use that makes its way into the watershed 🌊 4. Vote for officials who prioritize the health of these important habitats 🌊 5. Get outside and explore wetlands near you to build a better appreciation of these ecosystems. 🌊 6. ? The Suwannee River Water Management District staff initially recommended denial of Nestle's permit, but now they are recommending approval. What changed? I spent much of my childhood camping, swimming, and snorkeling in the springs of Florida. Ginnie Springs is among my favorites. I remember the magical feeling of being in nature surrounded by pristine woodlands, fresh air, and of course, the cold, crisp, clear water. This natural sanctuary is home to a vast array of wildlife and is now at risk of being destroyed. Nestle wants to pump 1.152 million gallons of water a day out of Ginnie Springs. The real cost comes at the expense of Floridians, wildlife, and the finite future of the natural resources we have on this planet. To top this off, Nestle is named one of the top three polluters in the world. National Invasive Species Awareness Week is drawing to a close. 🐟 One invasive species that I’ve come to know very well since I became a manatee educator is the armored catfish. (But the last pic is another invasive fish in FL—bonus points to anyone who knows that one.) 🐟 1️⃣ Their 💩 fuels algae growth, which chokes out the plants that manatees eat. Manatees are already dying by the hundreds because of starvation. 2️⃣ They agitate and exhaust manatees by attaching to manatees’ bodies. 3️⃣ They burrow into riverbanks. At Blue Spring State Park, erosion was already a problem from the hurricanes, and the catfish aren’t helping. Unfortunately, this affects not only the manatees, but also the humans who were hoping to play in the spring run this summer—it’ll be closed to visitors during restoration work. 🐟 So, what can be done about this invasive catfish? 🐟 There are researchers who are spearfishing these catfish, but that is a challenging endeavor because of their armor, and it hasn’t made a significant dent in the population. Hopefully scientists can work toward bigger solutions. 🐟 For us individuals, it’s important to remember the impact that our actions have on the environment around us. I’m sure each aquarium owner who dumped their unwanted non-native catfish into rivers or lakes wasn’t trying to initiate a catfish catastrophe, but that is indeed what has happened. And now I have live painted on a boat! This was a quickie two-hour piece (18"x24" / acrylic pens on canvas) for the @saveoursprings donor lake cruise. We were slightly too early to see Austin's amazing population of one million local urban bats emerge from under the South Congress Bridge, but I went ahead and painted it anyway. And painting on the water was easier than I expected; I think the vodka and grapefruit was more trouble than the wind. 🥂🦇 This piece is up for auction to support the vital conservation efforts of Save Our Springs Alliance! We are watching the world scream for help. There is so much more that we could be doing. The town I live in was offered a deal to have 800 oyster beds planted around the Max Brewer bridge. If you understand, a SINGLE oyster can clean 50 GALLONS of water a day. Our city said...NO. You read that right. They. Said. NO. To a positive change that they didn't have to pay for. Meanwhile I have witnessed deceased, dying, and injured manatee as well as countless other wildlife surrounding my home and work due to the carelessness of not only the city but from the residents within it. We HAVE to do better. Does anyone know how we can change this negative vote for these oyster beds to help our Indian River Lagoon and in return breathe life back into our waters? It is past time.
