It’s World Wetlands Day! Wetlands are the kidneys of the ecosystem and are important in filtering the water to keep wildlife and humans safe 🌊 In Florida, 50% of our wetlands have been eradicated by modern development, and many of the half that remain are threatened by a variety of human behaviors. But there are so many things we can do to have a positive impact! 🌎 Here are just a few ways to help protect our wetlands: 1. Don’t buy bottled spring water. This puts strain on our springs. Opt for a reusable water bottle that you can refill with filtered water. If you simply must buy bottled water, choose filtered water instead of spring water. 🌊 2. Opt for reusable items instead of disposable items when possible. (Even when thrown away in the trash or recycling, those items still have a chance of ending up in waterways.) 🌊 3. People with yards/gardens: plant native plants and reduce/eliminate fertilizer use that makes its way into the watershed 🌊 4. Vote for officials who prioritize the health of these important habitats 🌊 5. Get outside and explore wetlands near you to build a better appreciation of these ecosystems. 🌊 6. ? I recently spent some time exploring Fort Clinch on Amelia Island, Florida. The fort is a Third System masonary fortification and construction was begun in 1847. Never fully completed, the fort still served as a military post during the Civil War, Spanish-American War and World War II. Currently the fort sits as the centerpiece of Fort Clinch State Park. Okay, hear me out on this one. And try to think like an artist or a photographer. Here goes: The Southern Live Oak Tree is like the Grand Canyon. You’ve raised your eyebrows. Now, let me explain. The beauty and the majestic presence of a Southern Live Oak Tree is as impossible to capture on film or canvas as the Grand Canyon is. You have to experience them both in person to truly see their magnificence. I saw these young girls climbing on a low hanging limb of a Live Oak while Robin MacBlane and James Peronto and I visited Stephen Foster Folk Culture State Park. The girls are probably younger than 10 years old. The tree is easily over 100. National Invasive Species Awareness Week is drawing to a close. 🐟 One invasive species that I’ve come to know very well since I became a manatee educator is the armored catfish. (But the last pic is another invasive fish in FL—bonus points to anyone who knows that one.) 🐟 1️⃣ Their 💩 fuels algae growth, which chokes out the plants that manatees eat. Manatees are already dying by the hundreds because of starvation. 2️⃣ They agitate and exhaust manatees by attaching to manatees’ bodies. 3️⃣ They burrow into riverbanks. At Blue Spring State Park, erosion was already a problem from the hurricanes, and the catfish aren’t helping. Unfortunately, this affects not only the manatees, but also the humans who were hoping to play in the spring run this summer—it’ll be closed to visitors during restoration work. 🐟 So, what can be done about this invasive catfish? 🐟 There are researchers who are spearfishing these catfish, but that is a challenging endeavor because of their armor, and it hasn’t made a significant dent in the population. Hopefully scientists can work toward bigger solutions. 🐟 For us individuals, it’s important to remember the impact that our actions have on the environment around us. I’m sure each aquarium owner who dumped their unwanted non-native catfish into rivers or lakes wasn’t trying to initiate a catfish catastrophe, but that is indeed what has happened. During a recent stay in Clearwater Beach,FL I took a stroll along the shore and discovered this hidden gem...a small inland lagoon. The northern tip of the sliver of land on which Clearwater resides is a state park, preserving the beautiful wilderness. It is only accessible by foot during low tide, otherwise you must use a boat to arrive there. It definitely gives you a wonderful glimpse into what the entire area must’ve been like prior to the massive construction of one hotel after another.
