I am SEETHING! It took me weeks to save up the minimum amount to buy the Baldur's Gate 3 Collectors Edition, but because it's all sold out and they won't be restocking, it looks like the only option is SCALPERS! I don't want to give my money to Scalpers. I want to give it to the damn company who made the damn game!!! It's not even out yet and this is what it's being listed for on Ebay. The original product cost $300 USD

I made the throwaway comment about standard only being for competitive without actually clarifying my personal issue with that. This is something not everyone is going to relate to or agree with. I got into magic in the early 2000s a bit before edh really took off and gained support from wizards, when it was still a lesser known niche format.
60 card formats were what I learned and grew up on, and I honestly think they could and should be more inviting to the average new, casual, or budget player. Wizards is missing out there imo. They could be good for starting players cuz edh can be Very overwhelming for someone new to magic or especially TCGs in general. They could be good for budget players cuz it's a much smaller deck and products like battle and theme decks Used to be great affordable options. They could be good for casual players as 60 card formats are usually quicker and require less players and commitment in general. But they're not. They're only for competitive and tourney grinders. And I think that's a shame.
I also made my comment about old players buying UB because like you said it's inevitable, and not the crux of the issue for me. I personally never said I hate or dislike UB, or that I want wizards to stop it completely. I purposely never offered up Any concrete answers to what wizards should do with UB cuz I honestly don't have one. The only concrete things I can say about UB is that I don't think they should be legal across all sets, and I don't think wizards should focus so much of their releases on them. The main focus of my post is that wizards' increased focus on UB detracts from their original settings and stories and that's a shame imo.
All that said I totally agree with you on everything else. People who play stock market with cardboard are the bane of my existence and a festering rot within pretty much any TCG community. Wizards and hasbro absolutely should do something about scalpers but why the hell would they bother in the face of number go up. The long-term health of the game will suffer so long as wizards and hasbro are only concerned with chasing short term profits
Idk y'all like at this point it just feels like there's nowhere to go for long time mtg fans who are more interested in the game's original settings and stories.
Half of all sets in a release block going forward are UB, and now UB is legal across all formats? Grand, sprawling stories like the Phyrexian invasion are given a set (and a shitty half If they're lucky) to resolve, when they would've been given a whole release block to themselves in the past.
Nothing against those who enjoy UB, I'm not gonna stand here and pretend I didn't buy the fallout edh decks. If you like an IP and it comes to magic it's exciting! If it brings in new players that's great! But at a certain point what's the true priority here?
Old players generally aren't interested in most or every UB set. Players drawn in by their fave IP being in magic are a lot less likely to invest in the next sets. More casual players often can't afford the premium usually placed on UB sets. Wizards has to pay out God knows how much in licensing fees to monster companies with more money than them like marvel. Clearly this isn't sustainable.
But at this point it truly and genuinely feels like magic is not interested in telling it's own stories in its own unique settings. It doesn't care about giving it's writers the time to actually Write. It's more concerned with original settings staying "on theme" then actually feeling like fleshed out worlds with deep and complex lore.
I'll be shocked if magic Doesn't become nothing more then an IP blender game within the next 5 years. And if it does become that then it'll be an even quicker limp into the coffin.
Draft is dead. The future of EDH is uncertain at best. Standard is basically just for competitive players and tourney grinders hoping to make money. UB is going to dilute any remnants of originality and writing magic could be bothered with.
But hey the hasbro stock holders are happy right? Number go up? Number go up good? Damn it all for short term profits. Who cares what happens in the long run.
(I want to clarify that I do not bash the writing and lore of magic to bash the People writing it. Rather the Company that does not properly support them and give them the room to nurture their stories. I don't even necessarily want to heap all the blame on wizards. I have no idea how much hasbro forces their hand. What a slap in the face to see magic have some of its most successful sales ever with lotr and bloomburrow and Still face massive layoffs. This. Isn't. Sustainable.)
These are my opinions I'm venting
#mtg#not responding to start shit just wanted to clarify my thoughts a lil#again these are all very personal opinions and i get if people feel differently

Walkmen added two more shows and I got 3/4 with dumb luck. Fucking scalpers and glitchy incompetent AXS can rot in Hell. Scalpers have like 20+ tickets for the date I couldn't get on sale for 100 to 200 over face value. It shouldn't be this way.
#I'm going to all 4... I'll try again at general sale or buy resale if I have to.#So overall I'm happy#But it was stressful
