⁣ Canon EOS 250D ⁣ Taken on 16/01/2022.⁣ ⁣ *⁣ Famous for its fishing and even more famous for its seafood restaurants, Porto Santo Stefano is not that old.⁣ ⁣ Located in Southern Tuscany, it began to take shape in the 15th century under the Republic of Siena, but was constantly under siege from pirates until the Spanish fortified it a century later.⁣ ⁣ Today Porto Santo Stefano wears this young – in comparison to the rest of the Maremma – but colourful history on its sleeve.⁣ ⁣ The countryside that surrounds the seaside town is dotted with fortresses and towers built by the Spanish to keep an eye on their many enemies. Beautifully conserved, these relics can be visited all year round.⁣ ⁣ Sure, Porto Santo Stefano doesn’t hold the same appeal as, say, Montemerano with its gorgeous medieval essence. ⁣ Samsung Galaxy Note 10+⁣ Taken on 07/06/2020.⁣ ⁣ Travelling up and down 'lo Stivale' ('the Boot'), I've always been left in awe by the awesome architecture found in medieval cities, towns and villages.⁣ ⁣ This medieval tower in Salassa, which doesn't bear a name, is round at the top but has a rectangular base. This variation of shape is highly unusual to find, making it a fascinating feature for the 25-metre tower. Inside there's a staircase, but rarely accessed.⁣ ⁣ What also makes this tower unique is the single window with a terracotta frame that you see halfway up in stark contrast to what appear to be arrow slits or loopholes.⁣ ⁣ In addition, the tower marks the entrance to the village's 'ricetto' (shelter) — a small, fortified structure, usually square or rectangular-shaped, surrounded by defensive walls that is common in the Canavese area dating back to the 13th Century. The houses here have quite a gaunt appearance but are entirely authentic and well looked after. So as well as admiring the unusually striking tower from the entrance, don't forget to wander into the 'ricetto', too!⁣ ⁣ Salassa is on the Rivarolo Canavese–Pont Canavese bus line run by 'GTT'. ⁣ Canon EOS 250D | 59mm | 1/160s | f/8 | ISO 100⁣⁣ Taken on 20/06/2020.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Deep in 'Valle Vermenagna' ('Vermegnana Valley') in the province of Cuneo is a small village called Vernante.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Having made my way to the historic centre, which was conveniently just opposite the train station, I spotted a series of murals along the street that were positioned (well, painted) in such a way that it was as though they were jumping out at me. And, when I'd reached the end of the village, it suddenly hit me: all the murals were of Pinocchio.⁣⁣ ⁣ I then retraced my steps and took a close and careful look at each mural depicting the puppet child; it felt like I was stepping back in time and remembering my childhood. For children, it must be fun walking around the village and piecing together the story of Pinocchio; it's an impressive way to turn the ordinary into something very extraordinary.⁣⁣ ⁣ It turns out that the illustrator of Pinocchio, Attilio Mussino, spent the last years of his life in Vernante. To pay homage to the famous illustrator, the two painters Bartolomeo Cavallera and Bruno Carletto worked together to revive the scenes of the famous Pinocchio novel on the walls of the village. Clever concept 💡⁣⁣ ⁣ Over the years more and more murals can be seen peeping put from the walls much to the enjoyment and amazement of locals and visitors alike. ⁣ Samsung Galaxy Note 10+⁣⁣ Taken on 06/01/2020.⁣⁣⁣ ⁣ * Repost *⁣⁣ ⁣ The best description I've seen of Bogliasco has to be 'a chocolate-box mishmash of coral, turquoise and sunflower-yellow homes curling around a pocket of the Mediterranean'.⁣⁣ ⁣ I took this photo from a viewpoint that's just a five-minute walk up from the centre. It's a beautiful spot for catching sweeping sea views and basking in the sun while admiring all the pastel-coloured houses.⁣⁣⁣ ⁣ Like Nervi in a previous post, Bogliasco is just a few stops from Genoa's central station, i.e. Piazza Principe. In fact, Bogliasco is the next stop after Nervi, so you can visit one in the morning and the other in the afternoon.⁣⁣ ⁣ I would definitely encourage anyone who's willing to ditch the well-worn tourist route to visit Bogliasco.
