Double Currie Cup debut at DHL Newlands
DHL Western Province flyhalf Jean-Luc du Plessis and wing Edwill van der Merwe will both play their first Currie Cup game in the North-South derby against the Vodacom Blue Bulls at DHL Newlands on Saturday.
The backline duo have both represented DHL Western Province in the SuperSport Rugby Challenge, but will get their first taste of Currie Cup action in the big season-opener, which kicks off at 17h15 on Saturday.
Du Plessis will form a halfback partnership with Justin Phillips, with Dan Kriel and Ruhan Nel in midfield alongside him.
Van der Merwe is on the right wing and will be joined in the back three by Seabelo Senatla and fullback SP Marais.
Loosehead prop Corne Fourie will make his DHL Western Province debut in an experienced front row which also features hooker Scarra Ntubeni and tighthead Wilco Louw, with Chad Solomon, Kwenzo Blose and Carlu Sadie among the replacements.
Captain Chris van Zyl is joined in the second row by Salmaan Moerat, with JD Schickerling set to make his return from injury from the replacements bench.
No.8 Juarno Augustus is also back from injury and is joined in the loose trio by flanks Jaco Coetzee and Ernst van Rhyn.
DHL Western Province Head Coach John Dobson said that given the single-round format of the Currie Cup, it is vital that his team make a strong start this weekend.
“We start the Currie Cup with a North-South derby at DHL Newlands, so it is obviously something that everyone is looking forward to.
“We have had a good pre-season and the focus is on making sure we can deliver from the word go this season,” he said.
Anyone who buys four Category One tickets together to watch DHL Western Province play in a Currie Cup league game at DHL Newlands this season will pay just R250 in a Fantastic Four special offer.
Tickets are affordably priced and range from R40 for standing to R100. In addition there are more ticket options beyond the standard season ticket and matchday ticket. The DHL Newlands Faithful will be able to ‘Upgrade to Business Class’. The halfway line Business Class seats have been refurbished on the halfway line in Block H on the Railway Stand and holders of these tickets will also have exclusive access to the Railway Coach bars both before, during and after the match. These prime seats will cost R200 each.
DHL Western Province: 15 SP Marais, 14 Edwill van der Merwe, 13 Ruhan Nel, 12 Dan Kriel, 11 Seabelo Senatla, 10 Jean-Luc du Plessis, 9 Justin Phillips, 8 Juarno Augustus, 7 Ernst van Rhyn, 6 Jaco Coetzee, 5 Chris van Zyl (captain), 4 Salmaan Moerat, 3 Wilco Louw, 2 Scarra Ntubeni, 1 Corne Fourie. Stormers favorable of Etzebeth return for Blues
2019-03-25 14:28
Cape Town – The Stormers are hopeful that powerful Springbok lock Eben Etzebeth will return for Saturday’s clash against the Blues in Auckland.
The 27-year-old was named in the starting line-up for this past weekend’s clash against the Hurricanes, but was withdrawn at the final hour after failing to pass a late concussion test.
Etzebeth picked up a head knock against thee Jaguares on March 15 at Newlands and has been recovering since.
According to Stormers assistant coach Russell Winter, however, Etzebeth is looking good for Saturday’s clash against the Blues, though he still has more routine tests to get through.
“Eben looks like he is recovering and doing quite well,” Winter said from New Zealand on Monday.
“Unfortunately he didn’t pass his concussion test last week so he had to continue with the protocol this week.
“It’s looking quite positive for him and we’re hoping that by Thursday he will be cleared.”
There are a couple of other injury concerns for the Stormers.
Lock JD Schickerling left the field early in the 34-28 loss to the Hurricanes on Saturday with a shoulder injury that has been troubling him for some time.
“JD has a shoulder that he’s trying to look after. We were aware of it, but it’s just one of those things that we need to manage,” Winter said.
The other two injury worries are both concussion-related.
Salmaan Moerat, who replaced Schickerling on Saturday, also didn’t see the end of the game as he left the fray with a head injury as did loose forward replacement Jaco Coetzee.
“Salmaan and Jaco left the field because of concussion. We’ll give them a chance until Thursday to see if they can recover through the week, but that depends on the protocol,” said Winter.
“Other than that I think we have a clean bill of health … we’re just waiting on those.”
Kick-off on Saturday is at 08:35 (SA time).

The Stormers Top 5 players to watch: . . 1) Damian Willemse - One of the most exciting young talents in world rugby. He does it all. With du Preez gone, he will be in a great position to putting on a show for us. . . 2) JD Schickerling - Broken neck about 4 years ago. The 22 year old has made a come back of note, playing out of his boots in the Currie Cup. With du Toit and Etzebeth injured for a while; JD will be going back to his role as the enforcer. . . 3) Salmaan Moerat - Previous SA Schools captain, the youngster impressed coach Fleck in the pre-season with his aggression and quality. As stated above, the 2 starting locks are out for a while; so he will most definitely have his time to shine. . . 4) Dillyn Leyds - Who can forget THAT pass from last season. His skill level is of the highest quality and always manages to give the people what they want. Stays on the highlight reel. . . 5) Seabelo Senatla - Explosive, explosive, explosive. The best in the world at interchanging between 7's and XV's. Setting records in 7's; it's time for him to start fires at XV for another season. . . . . #rennysports #sport #rugby #superrugby #southafrica #stormers #capetown #picoftheday #photooftheday #likeforlike #like4like
