"A scholarly journal run by the Dutch publishing giant Elsevier has come under scrutiny for rejecting a paper submitted for publication because, among other reasons, it didn’t cite enough of the journal’s previously published papers. "...Academics say abuse and manipulation will continue as long as current incentive systems—which encourage publishing as many papers as possible in so-called prestigious publications—are in place."

Eight Theses on Scholarly Communication
1. Scholarly communication and open access are better understood and analyzed not as a static collection of things, individuals, and companies but as an interconnected system in constant motion, change, and development; driven by contradictions. It’s best understood dialectically and materially.
2. The end has been mistaken for the beginning. The focus on things (research articles and other outputs) remains a mistake and focus should be redirected to people, relations, processes, and production.
3. More OA (as in quantity of articles) does not automatically qualify as progress, especially if it is the result of exploited labor. OA is increasingly used to further justify exploitation in the research and publication processes. More analysis is needed on the forthcoming demands the OSTP memo will make on labor.
4. Diamond remains the best available OA model. Its socialist flavor means it will remain marginal pending a radical reconfiguration in existing relations.
5. OA was recuperated by the publishing oligopoly because it’s not inherently radical. OA has traditionally been conceptualized using an insufficient framework centering individual choice and legal rights. This liberal framework has proven to be capital-friendly.
6. The University (as self-interested organization and employer) is an underexamined relation. Its relation with academic workers is often flattened in general discourse. The University-Oligopoly relation is often viewed one-sidedly. The Research University is not being “bled dry.” Rather, it participates in a mutually beneficial relation with the oligopoly where value flows to and is accumulated by both.
7. Academic researchers are subject to concurrent oppression by a combination of the University, non-diamond publisher, and/or grant agency. An author’s self-awareness of this triple oppression is not necessary for it to be a material reality. An analysis overly focusing on individuals is cheating.
8. We are in a neoliberal trickbag. “Speaking truth to power” and class collaboration will not get us out. Hurling insults at commercial publishers won’t dismantle their power. Treating scholcomm and OA as a single-issue won’t work either. Only class struggle will. The u.s. doesn’t have a politically conscious and organized working class. Unless and until this occurs, the most progressive change will continue to happen in the Global South.

"We find that half of all report downloads are used for non-academic purposes, including to improve the provision of services by medical professionals, local and regional planners, public health workers, and veterans’ advocates, to name just a few of the 64 total categories of report use.  Heavy use is made of Academies reports on STEM education and how people learn by teachers, school administrators and teachers’ coaches.  Other notable reports with their prominent users included Dying in America (chaplains), Nutrient Requirements for Beef Cattle (farmers), and Best Care at Lower Costs (clinicians and hospital administrators)."
"Librarians and open access advocates have long presupposed that open access to high-quality scientific knowledge could and should be viewed as a public good. Our empirical research suggests that the initial utopian aspirations regarding the public use and societal impact of OA may indeed rest on sound footing."

A Few Reflections on the TOME Initiative
A Few Reflections on the TOME Initiative
WASHINGTON, DC – Today a group of colleagues from the Association of American Universities, Association of Research Libraries, and Association of University Presses met to advance the Towards an Open Monograph Ecosystem (TOME) initiative. It was heartening to see the progress the initiative has made since our first gathering in the summer of 2016. At the time, I was enthusiastic about the effort…

“Should there be an emoji for everything?” asked journalist Sophie Haigney in a recent New Yorker article. “What, exactly, do we want from our emojis?”
The future of the emoji may be uncertain, but one thing is abundantly clear. Emojis are booming. From classic smiley faces to dancing “party parrots,” there are now almost 3,000 options to choose from. They fill our text messages, our Slack chats, our emails—even some of our books. In 2015 the “tears of joy” emoji was declared Word of the Year by Oxford Dictionaries.
But despite the digital dominance of emojis, they haven’t infiltrated every aspect of daily life. Recent research by ScholCommLab co-director Stefanie Haustein reveals that, when it comes to scholarly communication, emojis mostly get a 👎.

Big Life Update: I’ve joined Ubiquity Press as Community Manager
I’m a big believer in the Tom Robbins quote, “You should never hesitate to trade your cow for a handful of magic beans.” So, I traded my tenure-track cow for remote work, open access publishing beans.
I’ve loved being a librarian, but I’m so excited for this next chapter of professional and personal growth on the Ubiquity Press team. I do think once a librarian, always a librarian. I was planning to call myself a former Scholarly Communication Librarian, but I’m going to take a note from Jennie Halperin — I’m not a former librarian, I’m a rogue scholcomm librarian. ;)
FAQ: Where are you moving to? A: I don’t know! I’m working remotely, living in Florida for now, but am trying to figure out where comes next for me. Suggestions welcomed.
It was harder than I anticipated to leave FGCU on Friday. It was my undergrad university and I’ve been laying a strong scholarly communication foundation, including passing an Open Access policy in my final weeks. I had some amazing colleagues, an innovative supervisor, and supportive administration. It really is a fantastic place to work and I wouldn’t have been leaving it so soon if it wasn’t for one of my dream jobs. If you’re a Scholarly Communication Librarian who wants to live in Florida and have a supportive work environment for your scholcomm experiments, apply to the job when it gets posted! I’ll be shouting on listservs and Twitter when it does.
